I have a friend; let’s call him “Bob”. Bob made me stop being Black. Bob explained to me how absurd it was for anyone to consider himself or herself “Black”. I started raging at first. Bob is married to a white woman so I was immediately tempted to go with, “Bob, you self-hating…”

Then I got it.

So now, when I stand in front of the mirror, I no longer see a Black man. I just see me.

Bob’s brilliant.

Of course, I tested this theory in a room full of “N-Words” and they all wanted to lynch me.

“What do you mean you not Black?” demanded the one.

“You don’t like being a Black man?” asked the other.

“What? You hate yourself or something? Where’d you grow up?” asked the last.

Chris Wilder got it immediately.

“Of course!” he said. He sounded almost mad through the phone. “When I stand in front of the mirror, I don’t see some Black man. I just see me.”

“Right!” I cheered.

“Bob still hates himself, tho,” Wilder assured me.

One of the great mind-screw things done to Blacks in this country which, I gotta tell you, even as a victim I gotta respect for the sheer depth of its depraved genius, was to make us see ourselves as “other”. Like even in our own skin and in our own homes we are somehow alien.

The white male is America’s logo.

My people fought over which name fit us best and I still like “Black”. “African-American” is for another conversation. So in the American context, I AM A BLACK MAN-immediately, before I’m anything else, human being or Child of God.  But if the first thing that I see when I’m alone and I look into the mirror is a Black man, that means that I’ve accepted America’s view of me as my own.

That would be insane.

Divide and conquer. Take individuals away from the group and we wonder why our communities are struggling, When people only see themselves in the mirror?

When I look in the mirror I see my mother, I see my father, I see my ancestors. I see a daughter, sister, a cousin, a best friend all of her people.

To be in denial that someone views you as not one of them because you see yourself as individual is insane, lol. If everyone was seen as a human being and a Child of God what was done to black people after Hurricane Katrina, The Guinea pics kids, exploiting of “illegal” immigrants wouldn’t have had happened/be happening in America. Dont even get me started what is happening in nations of color by european peoples.

To be in denial of how you are viewed by the world is not a good strategy in getting the best out of life. It’s like being a spy in another country. You have to adapt an alias and use how others view what that alias does to your advantage. If you dont you might find yourself killed if you step out of character. Announcing that you are and individual is only saying to the world that you dont want anything to do with your people so you are one less person in getting in the way of destruction of the people that look like you.

I wonder do White Jews have these attitudes of individualism after the holocaust? I doubt it. Which is evident in their communities, schools, restaurants, temples, community center their lil nation within in a nation in america.

But I might be speaking to deaf ears.

I COMPLETELY agree with “loreanashli.” To separate yourself from your roots is a set up for failure. Ask yourself this, when you walk into a room full of a variety of races and cultures, who do you gravitate towards? Because I’m sure you will see a room divided. I’m not saying that this is the perfect way for us to be; in an ideal situation, we as humans would not see color–but again, we are not in an ideal situation. Therefore it is pertinent that we always remember and acknowledge our heritage. We have gone through and are still going through the worst of the worst in this country and it hurts my heart when I hear that one of us chooses to deny that. I’m almost certain that another unfamiliar with our struggles won’t hesitate to classify you as BLACK right off the bat. All I’m saying is that while I’m sure your intentions are admirable, at this point in time I just can’t deem them reasonable.

No matter what you think and how you act, if you can,t change your skin color you will always be black. Wear a wig, perm your hair those naps will always say I’m black.

you can’t stop being black. But you can stop acting or ignorant to society. Shoot blacks put a stigma on all races and then when they get told the truth by our own (Dr. William Cosby), oh it is wrong for him to do it.

You and I were Black way before there was an America, so how is that this writer has concluded, that we weren’t Black until we were brought here?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Culture/ Culture

Whats the definition of being Black. Is it a physical thing or mind thing? (thought manifestation) This is a new concept for Blacks who came from a different country.Say for instance people who lives in the Island. They dont have to deal with these nonsense (for lack of a better word). What I am is Intelligent, a good person, who loves life to the fullness. I dont want to qualified myself of being black according to what most people thinks about it, because it is a limitation within this structual society.Because if you speak properly or being smart, you are not black enough. What the fck is that. Come on black people wake up. Black people from other parts of the world does better than native blacks, because we dont share the same mentality.

I’m Black and proud, when I look in the mirror I see black, when I step outside society sees black. We have a proud heritage. To think of the things our ancestors went through with slavery, they were not able to break us. loreanashli makes a lot of good points. This is a good topic, we need to explore this more deeply. I think Bill Cosby was wrong and I think Obama is wrong in that he is quick to preach to us but says nothing Europeans, Isreal, or others. Also he and Cosby wont address the socioeconomic conditions in communities, racist/white supremacist institutional policies that affect communities of color. The reasons they wont is another area for discussion. Dyson and Dr. Cornell West speak at length on that subject

All the writer is trying to say is that he knows that he is a Black man but when he looks in the mirror he sees a man first and I agree! I myself see a man before anything else. It is the way I look at myself. I am a very proud black man but before anything, I am still a man first!

the first thing i have to argue is that who ever wrote this article is not clear on what they are trying to say.second ive been around a lot of women and they always talk about not being interested in light skinned brothas and how white guys treat them good but they wouldnt marry them.I saw a solid deisel big black Koonta-Kiente motherf**ker at GNC last week. When he walked out of the store you wouldnt believe how many girls followed quickly behind him.I mean it was something you dont see often.what does that tell you about where america is at?

FIRST OF ALL BLACK IS A COLOR. BEING BLACK AND AFRICAN AMERICAN ARE TWO DIFFERENT CONTEXTS. BLACK REPRESENTS ALOT MORE THAN JUST AFRICAN AMERICANS PEOPLE. THERE ARE LATINO BLACKS, CUBAN BLACKS, AFRICANS, JAMICANS, AUSTRALIANS, ETC.WE AS BLACK AMERICANS NEED TO UNDERSTAND WE ARE NOT THE ONLY BLACKS IN THE WORLD, WE HAVE SO MANY SHADES OF BLACK IN THE U.S, I WOULDN’T EVEN CONSIDER CALLING MYSELF BLACK WHEN MY SKIN IS BRIGHT AS LIGHT.I MYSELF AM AN AFRICAN AMERICAN AND VERY PROUD OF IT. BLACK IS ALL OF US. YOU ARE AFRICAN AMERICAN.

I just wish whoever is writing this type of bullsh*t,would stop. Its just another way to bring black people down & make them feel less of themself. When you look in the mirror-you should see your true color(BLACK),followed by your roots-your history of what you was then & what you are now-STRONGER,WISER,SMARTER,BETTER,BEAUTIFUL,HONEST,INTELLIGENCE,RESPESTFUL,HAVE FAITH & BELIEVE IN THEMSELF & GOD,CONFIDENCE,& LOVED. SMILE-BE PROUD OF WHO YOU ARE & SAY YES-IM PROUD TO BE BLACK.

<<<not at all surprised by a lot of the comments in here, because most of you are still not thinking for yourselves. what he’s saying makes complete sense. he’s not separating himself from other ‘black people’ if anything, he’s getting closer to truth. the truth is, separating yourself as a black person is just as dangerous as separating yourself as anything else (differences vs. definitions). how can you preach unity of one group without alienating yourself from the whole. when talking about whites enslaving our minds, keep in mind many whites also lost their lives as abolotionists fighting on behalf of blacks. all these different categories do nothing but move races, cultures, human beings farther apart. chinese history, black history, jewish history, white history…all of this is history. they didn’t happen in different dimensions separate from one another. it’s all history…just like we’re all human beings. staying caught up on unnecessary bs such as race keeps us on autopilot…not thinking…not progressing. so if you honestly look in the mirror and see your skin color…maybe that’s about as deep as your understanding of the world goes. re-examine YOUR mindset and get it on track.

makes a lot of sense to me. i am first and foremost ME, a man, father, son and brother. i shouldnt be defined by my skin color, foot size, height or anything else that was encoded in my DNA. Dr. King said “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. its a shame that pigeon holing ourselves is the only way to be “real”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chevah_don/ chevah_don

I wouldnt want to stop being Black or seperate myself from “Blackness” , however you want to define it.

However , please let me know how I can seperate myself from the likes of Tiger Woods, the author of this post and other mentally-dead , brain-washed fools with similar assimilationist thinking and leanings.

Sorry for all the Carlton Banks-types who have had their Blackness questioned or never felt up to the grade and want to distance themselves or wax philosophically to ponder the necessisity of it. But , I’m Black and proud…..unequivocally , undoubtably and unrepentenly so!
