It can and should be argued that when laws are unjust, the morally righteous man is an outlaw. Therefore, it would be downright loony to consider Harriet Tubman a criminal because she stole people’s property and set it free, or to call Rosa Parks a criminal because equal fare paid should always mean equal privileges, or to call Muhammad Ali a criminal because he refused induction into the US Army to fight in a war that he religiously opposed.

It would be loony, but it’s also true. All three were criminals. All three broke the law.

But let’s say that the moral terrain isn’t so rocky and we’re dealing with more conventional criminals. And not the Oskar Shindler types that might have occasionally stretched a truth here or there to help people, but, you know, hustlers and the like. Are they heroes too?

Well…

The popular Balzac paraphrase holds that “Behind every great fortune there is a great crime” and if we consider that illegal bootlegging afforded the money necessary for Joseph Kennedy to make one of his sons a US President, one a US Attorney General, and another a longtime Senator, we’d have to admit that Balzac wasn’t lying.

Still, I must admit that I do find it a little disheartening that until the ascension of Drake, the only possible way to have been considered a credible MC was to have had as a past an equally credible run as a crack dealer.

Seriously, even if we Blacks do tend to idolize our criminals, are we any different than any other people? Sure, a lot of white folks seem pissed about Bernie Madoff, but right after a criticism, you’ll see them shaking their heads and hear them whistling to themselves almost worshipfully about the splendor of a con that brought in 65 billion dollars.

The most interesting irony, I think, about the whole criminal thing is that when notorious mob rat Sammy “The Bull” Gravano “turned” on his boss, John Gotti and gave him up in order to get a lighter sentence and enter the witness protection program, all the New York papers roasted Gravano. After The Godfather, I guess that the media was expecting a little integrity from its gangsters. Meanwhile, that same media seems to expect Blacks to snitch, as if we have no such integrity to be concerned about.

Larry Davis (pictured above) was a criminal. Click on his name and read his Wikipedia profile and tell me whether or not he was a hero.

Here we go! Batter up! Lol! My answer is SOME do. I mean nowadays people tend to do a LOT of “justifying” and “psychobabble”. For example: I grew up in the 80′s and 90′s. I can remember how it was back in the Reaganomic 80′s. I remember when you could halfway…MAYBE…KINDA…IT’S PLAUSIBLE…you know…be involved in some shady business. When so-called “gangsta rappers” would say that they are just reporting what they see in their hood. Okay, 1985 I could by it. 1985 I’ll give you the jobs is short I gotta do what I gotta do thing. But those days are gone. The ONLY reason a dude is out there on a corner with his crew is GREED. There is no more “I gotta feed my family”…blah, blah, blah. Do you feed them Beemers and Benzes? And then you hear the things on these CDs. I mean shootin’,killin’,robbin’,etc. In what society and culture that NOT criminal behavior? Ours I guess. Because if you call “BS” then you ain’t “keepin it real” man. It’s struggle. We “street soldiers”. We an “endangered species” and all the other catchphrases for these negroes that need to be TOLD “don’t rob each other”,”don’t kill each other” “respect each other”. Whatever. Then you get Rev. Al on TV saying that gun companies should be sued. WTF??? Yet we still cheer when the same drug dude who strung ya auntie out gets a brand new ride and passes turkeys out on Bird Day. Wow.

i mean but at the same time the previous generations have gotten lazy in rising and setting a good example for lets say, my generation. It sickens me that all we have is each other and not our elders and our adults….I’m tired of all this “back int he day” and “those days are gone” bulls**t because the previous generation hasnt done their job in making sure those values stick around. so I cant speak on the previous generation because I have no clue as to why they have just fell off and have gotten lazy (probably because of the introduction to drugs in the black communities back in the day) but I can speak for my generation. The previous generation aren’t much to look up 2 AT ALL these days. The young doesnt run anything, as far as im concerned folks are letting s**t happen. Everybody wants stuff to get better but doesn’t want to put in the work, instead they just want to sit around and complain. EVERYBODY is responsible for shapes our people and our communities are in \today. My generation looks up to those that they can identify with and not a leader (because there are none these days). With all these young rappers and “criminals” (as this article likes to say) enables my generation to be able to relate to them because we are all the same generation facing the same problems. I dont condone this behavior but I can understand without judgment. So panamaniak its waaaaay deeper than greed. Because greed is taught and can be countered with the proper instruction..And if u think jobs were shorter in the 80s than in this new millennium and people aren’t more desperate then..*COUGH* lol

I find it very interesting as well as troubling that that is the case. Black people DO idolize criminals (in real life and in the movies) in general, ESPECIALLY in Hip Hop! If you see all the names associated with Rappers and Rap Crews: Murder Inc., Death Row, Capone N Noreaga, Scarface, Junior Mafia, Uncle Murda, Biggie Smalls, just to give you an example…. It’s like what Chris Rock said in one of his comedy specials, Blacks praise people when they come home from prison yet vilify them when they come back home from college.

panamaniak said it well. Oh and AL is an idiot. criminals dont buy guns from gun shops or gun companys. They buy them off of the streets or steal them from people or peoples homes or gun shops. Thats kind of like illinois no gun law. who are they protecting? the citizens or the criminals cause i betcha they still gonna have a gun and they arresting normal every day sane people that only have one to protect them self for that day of “what if”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sylkiifeather/ sylkiifeather

i dont feel that blacks necessarily idolize criminals. i just feel that blacks can maybe empathize with criminals to some extent. i mean, not as far as a criminal doing harm to someone. but as far as a criminal…like tallerthanyou said below…being able to beat the system. also, when we think about the drug dealers or whatever, yea they are selling drugs and of course thats not good. but at the same time, black people in general know what struggling feels like, and maybe thats why a black person could at least understand what a criminal is going through to be able to feed their families. no, im not saying all black people feel that way, and neither do i…im just saying how someone else maybe could. and yes, what criminals do is wrong obviously…..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/syryous333/ syryous333

You know Tall once you understand what the system is, and Why it’s present in this today’s world, it adds professionalism! paycheck, stability, income, as well as power, order, and some would even say obedience! modern day slavery! yeah when a man isn’t understanding his, or her worth! Can we get mad about it? Yes and No!No because, when have the people of faith not had to overcome, black or white, brown, or yellow! So we should alway’s remember they’ll be that type of present’s! Yes, because that kind of present’s is here to pose that kind of threat, as well as inferiority! To allow egotism, glutiny, and greed to feed thee opposer’s selfesteem! SELFHATRED! An Daintyjen, that’s only one third of the problem, bring today’s brainwashed youth together, that’s your two thirds! making it a circle, can be achieve, cause talking about it, is truelly the first step! MAKING IT A REALITY, PRICELESS! HELL, DOWNRIGHT~right!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Da_J_Rok/ Da_J_Rok

I would say no we dont idolize them, we idolize the “MATERIAL” that they aquire. Most guys who hustle and build empires are actually smart, maybe not so much in the form of book sense, but the methods that they use tie into it. They make a bunch of money, and then they don’t know how to structure themselves to actually “reap” the real benefits of real wealth, such as like most of our corporate counterparts, in the fact of establishing businesses, education outlets, and non-profit organizations. I have respect for the “HUSTLE” I just wish that the form of it, would transform into growth and productivity.

I really don’t want to bring “The White Man” into this but thats the only example that we have. They have a system to protect each other, we have to learn how to duplicate it but the only way that it can be successful that if we unite. They will put aside their differences for a common purpose, and the only common purpose that Black people in the past 30 years have seem to agree on is not being “broke” but no one is willing to sacrifice, I may not have been a Baptist like Dr. Martin Luther King and I may not have been a Muslim like Malcom, but I know that they made the ultimate sacrifice. In this day, we all need to sacrifice our minds, our understanding and in some cases maybe even our lives. But the element above all those things is keeping God first. In any form of prosperity, begins with a thought.

In Genesis chapter 11 verse 6… The reason why we all we were made differently, is because if we all “speak and think as ONE” we can do anything we imagine. If we put God above all those things we can have anything we want. Thats how I know Black people are truly cursed

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzay8888/ jazzay8888

I think that the young black kids look up to these thug. I live in Mississippi and I see it everyday. Young black boys constantly trying to be like the little “dope boys, the “thugs” and the “Criminals” who have done jail time. Its almost like this is the lifestyle that they want to persue. It’s a shame that these individuals in our community get more respect from young black kids than the police do. You look at the way that they carry themselves, constantly usuing foul language, riding around all day smoking drugs, hanging on street corners wasting thier lives away, being disrespectful to the elders in the community, almost all of them carry guns or sum type of weapon and the sad part about it is the parents of these young kids are nowhere to be found. Now these kids have no one to show them there is a better solution to being a positive person in life. They have no one took look up to so what do they do next? They start looking to the TV, the radio and and the hoodlums on the streets who constantly cater criminal activity to young black kids. It has gotten to the point that is really sad in my community. A lot of black parents in my area had laid down, brought these kids in the world and just left them hanging to raise themselves. I’m quite sure like everyone else, no matter what color you are, everyone grew up around a group of individuals who became criminals but that doesn’t mean that our children have to follow in their footsteps. To stop this cycle, all black parent have to do is from the day that that child is born, you have to get active in his/her life. You have to train a child in the way he/she should go! Stop dropping them off at Granny’s, Auntee, Sister’s, Cousins and neighbors so you can go shake yo azz at the club every weekend. If you stay gone out of a childs life in the early years then don’t expect to have one when they hit pubity. It’s too late then! Kids a teenager now! Now you wanna come in and lay ur law down! Not gonna work black people! With all he/she has seen, heard, done and experienced in the days you weren’t there, your rule don’t mean S**T! Their role models have already been established in the streets and on da block. So what do you do now? Well, you got two chioces: 1. START SAVING BOND MONEY OR 2. INVEST IN SOME BURIAL INSURANCE because if they are caught up in this lyfestyle long enough your’e gonna need one of the two!

I don’t see why this is even an issue. White people have idolized Criminals from the dawn of their meger exsistance. They have made movies for ever known white criminal in America. John Dillinger, John Goitti, Jesse James,Al Capone, etc……and every known Serial Killer has had movies and books written about them. So, you asked if Blacks Idolize Black Criminals, I say “No” the real issue for them, is the Material Things they obtain from the criminal activities in this society that stack so much against them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/THESHAOLIN1/ THESHAOLIN1

The way i see it is this….

Black people run low level amounts of drugs, The white man (cia and other intelligent agencies and drug gangs) runs all the drug industry and keep it flowing over the western world.

Denial is your own choice, but these rappers on tv are just influencing people to become a part of that white mans drug scene….or to pull triggers without logical thought and human compassion.

They tryna turn us into animals out here who have the fight or flight mechanism if people were logical they could see all the problems we have lay with who we depend on to run the world The united nations and all else.

The reason black people have bad role models is because bad role models have been created for them by white business men. The reason black people are in poverty is because the roman bloodlines and papal bloodlines who rule America and all of the United Nations have decided it to be this way.

You should aim higher in all areas of life than to be the product of the system you were brought into, or to be what they want you to be nothing but a chaotic mind whose destiny is either prison or death.

Unfortunately, blacks tend to sympathize with black criminal action all too often especially when being criticized by the media. Between hip hop’s glorification of illicit activities to the “Stop Snitching” policies, too many of us see it as a way to stick it to the man. As soon as a black celeb gets accused and arrested for something, we’re outside the jail picketing for their release. We defend Whitney and Bobby though they’ve admitted to drug use. We defiantly played R. Kelly and MJ’s songs on the radio when they were on trial, despite all the overwhelming evidence in their cases.

It doesn’t help that white media rarely crucifies guilty white celebs and perpetrators they way they do blacks. Did Robert Blake, Phil Spector and Ben Roethlisberger get the same kind of scrutiny and media coverage that OJ and Kobe got for the exact same crimes ? That makes blacks feel like our crimes are singled out as more deserving of punishment and we’re being upheld as an evil cancer of society. Plus we already know that blacks are more likely to get harsher penalties for the same crimes whites do. So we rally around black criminals in support rather than condemn them. A great idea would be for us to not perform crimes at all and make the media scrape our barrels for something to report. They already spend so much time looking for black crime, they miss what’s in their own back yard like that Philip Girrado freak who kidnapped that girl. Stop giving them ammunition. Make them look in the mirror for their crime stories.

As for Larry Davis, he’s no hero. I remember that story back in the day. The talk was he killed the drug dealers for their money and drugs not to save the neighborhood. If he was a real hero, he would have captured them and turned them into the police along with the drugs. He could have kept the loot for himself.

When someone is a criminal because they are standing up for something good and moral, that is one thing. But, the fact that too many of us worship common criminals who are bringing not only black people but all of America down, that is something else. We, the adults, need too teach our children to look at positive people doing positive things for their heroes.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TheFlystyleDon/ TheFlystyleDon

    This is an interesting topic, In my opinion; I’d like to start first by saying. There is a scripture that clearly states. “Thou shall not judge!” Thus, “In Real Life” why would anybody measure a man’s worth by his mistakes and not his accomplishments! We as Black People these days have been taught to look at the downside of anybody that we encounter first, without giving their upside a look afterwards. I believe that, No one is beyond trial and error and if I were taught what is right from the Home and not having had to be tossed around and taught by the streets obstacles, I’d have a clean criminal record. But what about my parents. They may feel the same way and their Parents may not have known any better, Their parents were probably scorned by Slavery s**t. In one of the new tracks from the Mack Sauce album I make reference to this in a Quotable stating on a track called (Boss Game) “It’s much deeper than hustlin up a comfortable life, In this spiritual warefare it’s Dark vs the Light!” So don’t entertain the Shenanigan’s about this person or that person who probably didn’t know to have a fair chance in this race. You’d probably trip real hard off the response you’ll get when you link wit a Real Nigga that lived on the same block as you and Made It out of the Game because they had enough sense to take street smarts and turn it into the same wealth as the guy who was sheltered and had only knew Book Smarts if that might be you, when you start to tell them how advertisment of any product can sell that product in the business world just like the Crack they may have sold in the community! Yea, there’s a lot of torn families and things of that nature responsible for that person’s wealth but instead of condemning them, give them a positive approach to review and consider. All the bosses I know have went legit with there mistakes through Real Estate and many other trades, you wouldn’t believe how many Bosses I’ve mentored and brought them out of the Hood Based mentality! Trully, Never Idolize anyone but God. You’ve read or heard it, “Thou shalt not worship a Graven Image” but rightly divide the TRUTH with your neighbor! This cylce has to STOP one way or another and I assure you that with a little sweat off your smart ass backs WE can Change the Game! {GetMogulProne@TheFlystyleDon.com}

So as far as I’m concerned this is a dead end conversation, because a nigga from the hood can’t get Drugs Guns and s**t in the community without somebody giving them a Pass! Dead this BULLS**T!….. Or Shut the F**k Up and do something! And don’t try ta Blame it on the President cause he’s a Black Man! Put there to Clean it up! After a White Man (GEORGE W. BUSH) has caused the communities in New York and all around the world worse Grief than the worse Damn King Pin Drug Dealers in New York or around the F**kin world! “Jump on that & can’t fight!”

ALL ebonic genius answers aside for a moment…it is important to note that the very thing that defines criminal or non-criminal behavior is LAW.
Having said that…who authors and dictates LAW? If black people are to be free again;we need more non-sellout legal professionals!
When we black people truly STOP letting Caucasians play those jedi-mind tricks of doubt and pseudo-ethics on us and simply embrace ourselves and each other without jealousy(ie.without the desire to be the favorite slave.) Then and only then will we begin to treat each other like family. The way we did when the only ones we could depend on was “us” “ourselves” Black people unified under the worst of conditions like chatteled slavery.

Do Black people Idolize Black Criminals? Careful not to generalize. Definitely not ALL encompassing. We do have a segment of our population that embraces “The Dark Side” of human element, but that same statement can be made for any race, nationality, etc. Let the truth be told, most blacks are law-abiding citizens – making positive contributions to society. Like one of the posters mentioned before me “the people are a reflection of the society in which we live in”. Very true! Our nation is founded on creed, corruption, war-mongering, corporate theivery (white collar crime), drug smuggling, debauchery, you name it. Currently, we have over 1 million blacks in this country in incarceration. Based on percentages, higher than any other racial, ethnic group that shares the same space. Most of us either know someone who has been locked up or has been locked up ourselves at some point. When you consider our history, our plight, our journey – its not a stretch to see why contigent of blacks embrace, glamorize this culture (criminality). After all, “It’s the American Way.”

As far as Harriet and Rosa Parks if doing the right thing to help people in need, then yes there are criminals. But they didn’t go out there and shot nobody or kill nobody. The used their minds and their courage to assist history, so show that we can make a difference. As far as Larry Davis his first mistake was to kill, I can’t go with that. What Bernie Madoff did was wrong also but I still like the fact that now the white people feel the way we have for once.

First of all, to whom ever wrote this piece, you should be corrected for calling Harriet Tubman,Rosa Parks and Muhammad Ali criminals. They were righteous and dignified people who acted agaist unrighteous laws.

    Anyway,

The record sales numbers of gansta rap music proves with out a doubt that black people idolize criminals and criminal behavior. The word “street cred”
is our invention. Black women are the number one lovers of criminal men and behavior. This is one of our problems as a people if not the biggest problem.

Most black, not all blacks praises criminology and most that do idolize it see the fast buck that most Americans are killing themselves for in small companies and part time jobs, plus TV idolize gangsters even though they get killed in the end it still sets a message that the bad guys gets all the fame, woman and the money growing up that’s what I wanted. It’s the environment that one comes from. Growing up most blacks couldn’t even afford to eat so most kids had no choice but to idolize the gangsters with the dough. Those criminals should not be listed in the same story as Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King Jr or any other leader who stood up to make a change for people.
I was just having a conversation with my mother today about black people defending criminals. We know a 20yrs old black man that was just capture by the police and his crime was kidnap and theft and my mother said that she feels sorry for the man and I asked her for what and she said because we know him. I said what about the victims, he deserve to go to jail. He did the crime and now he needs to do the time.
If black people would stand behind other positive black people we will be a better race. Stop feeling sorry for criminals because if they get a chance to take from you and do harm to you they will. Stop saying that your child was a good child and he/she would not do that, because it’s a lie!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/leebrandenblackharne/ leebrandenblackharne

o parallel maMrtin Luther King and Rosa Parks with the common street thug that destroys his or her community by selling drugs and or shooting his own people, is like comparing a child who steals a piece of candy from the cuppard; to a murderer. There is no comparison. And i think it’s dangerous that you in so many words say that it’s ok to indulge in such criminal behavior. To those in our race who are easily influenced; you just gave them justification and a green light to continue with their nefarious activities.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sufiking96/ sufiking96

i don’t think most black idolize criminals.most people think that’s the case
because that’s all you see and hear on TV but it does not mean its always true. ask a hustler if he rather make money the right way. nine out of ten time he/she would tell you that he prefer making money the right way instead of dealing with the stress of watching there back for cops and others who are trying to get what the have. i think black people have a different view of what a crime is. if I’m hungry and i did all i can do to get a job and ask people i knew and still i can’t get any relief I’m going to take it especially if i have kids. its not a black thing, its a poor thing. and compared to other races in America we are the poorest. poor people hustle, steal and do what they have to do period. with money comes a higher level of education, better community more opportunities to succeed. this is universal.

SURE RACISM STILL EXIST, BUT IF THE BLACK COMMUNITIES WOULD UNITE AS WE DID IN THE DAYS OF CIVIL RIGHTS PIONEERS, INSTEAD OF KILLING OURSELVES GANG-BANGING & SUBSTANCE-ABUSING, MAYBE WE CAN BE WELL KNOWN FOR MORE THAN JUST GREAT ENTERTAINERS THAT SELL OUT THE COMMUNITY.

This country should bring back penal colonies. Find an Island so far out in the pacific, that escape would be impossible. And transport all the prisoners, from maximum security prisons there. That should free up some space, for less violent criminals. And save taxpayers, some money. Do i idolize black prisoners? Take a guess.

i believe this is true, blacks are not unified as they once were. Money is what motivates most criminals are making easy money , therefore we seemed to be drawn to them.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/armandx99/ armandx99

Let’s be real. Do Blacks idolize Black criminals? Yes,of course, just like every race does. Otherwise, why would Bonny and Clyde persist in being Halloween favorites? Why would shows like the Sorpranos be so popular? Why would whites continue to idoloize the Godfather movies and dredge up accounts about the exploits of Al Capone? These stories and lives fascinate us with the flash and excitement of fast lives, reckless rebellion, and disregard for an imperfect, sometimes absurd system of laws. The question should not be why do blacks idolize criminals, but why do people in general do it? So….chill out folks. It’s like white america often tells us, “Not everything is a racial thing.”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/panamaniak/ panamaniak

This may be true armandx99,BUT (and there is ALWAYS a BUT)Whether people will admit this or not, Blacks are ALWAYS under a racial and cultural “microscope”. Let me explain while playing “devil’s advocate”. White people (and forgive me if I do not use the term “race”, since there is only ONE race)can say that yes they make films about gangsters. From real life gangsters ie;Al Capone,John Dillinger, etc. To fictional,ie;Tony Soprano. BUT, when was the last time you turned on the TV or read a newspaper and seen or heard a story about mob Capo Johnny Three Fingers getting “whacked” at a deli in Brooklyn. Or Irish Bob McGirt wanted in Boston for a drive by gone wrong and a child was killed? When was the last time you were on a message board and someone was laying 99.9% of the crime is the US at the feet of Italian Americans? Or somebody saying that Italian Americans are prone to violence in criminal behavior? Or Italian Americans worship a culture devoid of morals? And even CELEBRATE it within a musical genre, ie;”hip hop”? Well??? See where I’m headed? The days of Gotti,Capone, etc are LONG GONE. There was a time when yeah people did say those things about Italians, but they don’t anymore. Am I saying Italians (and the reason I use Italians is because people still identify the mafia with them)don’t committ crime anymore? Of course NOT! But you won’t hear about it on the 10:00 news. But you will hear about how some Black guy did such and such. And you WILL SEE said Black guy in cuffs with and officer on either side and his pants hanging half way down his ass. Believe it or not we are held to a standard that NOBODY else in the world is. Yeah Arabs may be the “new” Jason for the US. And Mexicans may be the “new” Michael Myers for the US. But Blacks (and trust me I am not negative just a REALIST)is,was and always will be the granddady of them all the DEVIL. Obama or no Obama. Peace.

I don’t believe anyone in their right mind worship criminals regardless of color. As an African American who is 56 years of age my experiance in life has taught me that everyone makes mistakes, and we all pay for our mistakes. It doesn’t mean that we abandon our love ones, friends or comrades because they have obtained a criminal record or spendt time in prison. enough said.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/toodelicious4u/ toodelicious4u

Yes we do idolize criminals to a certain extinct! But what race doesn’t? Why single out only black people!!!?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Toni_Anthony/ Toni_Anthony

Not ALL Black People do! I believe based on feeling, loyalty, folk’s who know of wrong doers minimize what they see/know based on kinship? My Nephews have been locked up starting since they were in their late teens, but I accept their phone calls, send them money, etc., BUT I don’t uphold them, in their wrong’s & feel, “if,” they do the crime, do the time! I ask them all the time, “Is a Life Style/Association,” worth their youth, now cutting into their Adult Hoods? I have love for them BUT A Hero? Nah, I can ONLY hope they change their lives & dred 1 of 2 phone calls, “saying they are Dead or Locked Up,” but knock on wood it’s been ONLY 1 phone call & always the same! All Criminal’s are NOT in jail/prison! I believe it’s more who work’s in Blue & White Collier World. I believe they’d fill up more jail/prison’ than the one’s who is doing petty crimes, not to say, the fool’s who are doing all the violence & sick s**t are not WHERE THEY NEED TO BE! A HERO to me is a young person who DOES not want to be a Rapper and/or a Video Vixon!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/PRINCE_DEJOUR/ PRINCE_DEJOUR

I think black people do idolize criminals and the thug life. We are the community that has a don’t snitch creed, love thug rappers and feel that going to jail is no big thing. We have lost total respect for our ancestors who suffered and died for the freedoms and rights we have today. It seems like no matter what the story is black people must include white people. White people don’t kill each other at the rate that black people are and have been for many years. We are number one in murders, aids, teenage pregnancies, incarceration, dropout rate, and excuses. What happened to Black Pride, Self Respect, Real Men and Women who worked hard to make a better life for them and their family.

For all the people that believe it is okay if black people commit crimes because of racism, please include the town or city where you live so all the criminals can move next to you. This is absolutely insane.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/hakikah/ hakikah

I don’t think black people idealize criminals, really; but we are a culture of “wanna bes”: we wanna be rich, we wanna be famous, we wanna be cool and we wanna be loved. To do this we have learned by example and by socialization that to be rich you might have to break a few laws, and our evidence is that no matter how good and non-violent you are if you want something and you are black you just might have to go to jail…evidence Martin Luther King Jr, and Rosa Parks. We wanna be right and we can’t get into the game legitimately so we make like Tupac and live hard and fast. It must be worth with, everybody is trying it. Some make it some don’t but at least I tried. With all these police it is not cool to help them do their job when they are going to beat you down anyway. Socialization? No matter how good you are, right you are, good you are there is only room for one or two blacks at the top…evidence television. Killing can’t be all bad we do it all day for pleasure (video games) so why not try it and see how it feels really. And look at the love we get from all of the people we know, who we will meet in prison. And after all, hate has an adrenaline rush very much like love, and if your don’t know what love is truly, you take any rush you can get because we need to feel something.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Sheltwon3/ Sheltwon3

I think you have a nation of young people who need to idolize successful people and believe they can attain that. Unfortunately, the people with money most of the times are shady people. This is with most of the races. Some races know how to disguise it better but most of the people with money if they are not shady, their money and wealth came from shady stuff. This America was gained by shady stuff. I do hope black people get better as a people but there will always be people doing wrong. I think the biggest thing as far as the stigma on black people is they need to evolve their methods. Other races do criminal stuff but hide it in a legit manner. It would see that African Americans are too open with their criminal behavior. Young people may emulate because they see the strength it takes to make it in this shady world but their are other ways to deal with all this but we don’t have good leadership. How can a young person respect someone who tells them all this stuff and behind closed door they are worst and more colder than any person hustling on the street. I feel for these youths because there are a lot of churches that are corrupt and are very open with it now. It is hard to get people to trust God if they are more worried about getting screwed over by some church folk with positions that they are not handling properly. I think in a way most people are more comfortable with the evil they know and not the ones they don’t know.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/100th_Monkey/ 100th_Monkey

These topics become more asinine by the day. They are not designed to spark intelligent problem solving; they are designed to perpetuate stereotypes and even more ‘Self Indulging Racism.’ “Do black people idolize criminals?,’ is an inflammatory question that if asked by a white person would be deemed insensitive and racist. But to answer the question:

Salvatore Aparo, “Sammy Meatballs”, Al Capone, John Gotti, Anthony “Fat Tony” Salerno, Gambinos, were widely idolized by Italian Americans. The Gotti Family even has a reality show!

Bugsy Siegel, George Weinberg, Hitman Monya Elson was idolized by Jews here in America for years. Hymie Weiss for the Polish people, Dutch Schultz for the German Americans, McLaughlin Brothers for the Irish Americans.

There has even been movies glorifying these infamous and legendary mobsters. The Godfather, Casino, Scarface, The French Connection, Bugsy Malone, The Untouchables, Carlito’s Way, The Professional, Donnie Brasco, Heat, The Departed, Smoking Aces, Good Fellas are all Hollywood productions, and these movies were not about blacks, filmed by blacks, directed by blacks or even financed by blacks. In fact, you were lucky to even have a couple of blacks IN the film. So the question should be, “Do Americans Idolize Criminals?”

As AMERICANS (not just blacks) we do! We love crime movies, we love criminals, stories with a criminal element, crimes in the media and the news, and it is as part of our culture as religion and politics. I find it unfair to single out black people as if, (AS IF) whites do not idolize criminals. Why is Charles Manson still alive at Corcoran State Prison and even allowed air time on 60 Minutes? Richard Angelo who was a nurse and killed 25 patients is still walking around. He’s white. White people are obsessed with their criminals (Jeffrey Dahmer, Hannibal Lecter, Bonnie & Clyde, Jesse James, Ed Gein, BTK, Bundy, Son of Sam, John Wayne Gacy, George W. Bush, George W. Bush, George W. Bush) and when they run out of real criminals, they will create some (Jason, Freddy Kruger, Pinhead, Michael Myers, Saw puppet,) and when those ideas get old they will dream up little white toy dolls killing people (Chucky). Then you have the Sopranos in which everyone, “loved” Tony Soprano. I can go on and on.

So, I find this site reckless to ask such an absurd and ignorant question. You might as well ask, “Do only black people eat watermelon?” To you guys in here, don’t entertain these ridiculous topics. They do nothing to help us as a people. News One For Black America? Don’t speak for me News One. We need to start holding these websites accountable for their misinformation, their “teasing” techniques, They’re instigating, careless insinuating, and they’re attempt to “arouse” heated topics. Ask some relevant questions for once. How about, “Do You Think Black Kids Should Be Encourage To Attend a Big 10 University or Stick with a Community College?” Isn’t that a more positive topic? Just because the site is black doesn’t mean it’s not wack!

I feel you 100th, maybe they should hire YOU to write these articles, I would read it lol

Questions that pertain only to black people should be asked but one, like you said they should be fairminded and thought provoking, two it should be a more of a balance black people are still people first, how about some topics that are more relevant and worldly and include black people, and do not jus fan and promote common stereotypes.

They have to read these comments, maybe they will see your critique and take notice.
