Jay-Z’s got a great lyric on the song “So Ambitious” from his new Blueprint 3 release where he spits, “I can’t base what I’m gonna be off of what everybody isn’t.”

Naturally, I started thinking about the movie The Wizard of Oz. In that flick, four travelers, all lacking in at least one capacity, decide to journey to see an all-powerful wizard that holds in his hands, basically, the power of life and death.

When our travelers greet this magnificently projected wizard, they are frightened and amazed by an astonishing technical display of artificial omnipotence. Then Toto the dog draws a curtain back to reveal that the force behind this “wizard” is actually a wrinkled white geezer that couldn’t bust a grape in a fruit fight.

Now, I’m not trying to argue that racial hatred and racial violence don’t exist. That would be insane. What I’m wondering, however, is if racism really exists or if it is indeed like the idea of “white supremacy”; a concept so laughably absurd that it is dashed to ribbons every time Venus Williams serves a tennis ball?

And no, the election of Barack Obama hasn’t made me into one of them Spooks that now want to join hands with everybody and sing, “I Gotta Feeling“. Anybody that knows anything about history knows that there have already been 5 Black presidents.

But what I’m wondering now is if the concept of “racism” hasn’t been used as a scarecrow to keep non-whites from even attempting to do certain things (like elect our Blackest president yet).

And now that this  latest curtain has been drawn back to reveal our “wizard” for what he truly is, do we continue to believe that we need to petition this bozo to get what we want, or do we, like Dorothy, The Tin Woodsman, The Cowardly Lion and The Scarecrow realize that the power to effect the change we need has been ours all along?

I some-what agree, with the statement above & you got to remember in that movie it was a twister, that started it all up & the bad witch, tried in every way to stop them from get’ing to the wizard…and with that being said,in my opinion yes racism still & do really exist…the curtain draw back was them taking there sheets off & being known for what they really are-even thou,it didn’t stop the racism just gave blacks the power of knowing-who they are dealing, with.

Well the question at hand was if racism really existed or not and based on the article, I’d still have to say YES.

Sure, we have “power” to create what we want, but if this “Wizards power” is constantly reinforced, that makes things a bit different.

Racism is a multifaceted issue…For the most part, Racism is discriminotory practices that have been institutionalized…We see it in healthcare, education, banking, advertising etc…Due to this, people develop racist mindsets that has them believing and accepting certain negative perspectives or just a fundamental lack of respect for any member of a particular race, no matter what position they may hold…Case in point, Do you think Mr. Joe Wilson would have even felt comfortable yelling out “you lie” to Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Ed Kennedy etc. if they were addressing the nation? its been custom for Congressmen to assemble every now and then and listen to a speech from the commander-in-chief, and the things you hear and agree with, you applaud, and the things you don’t agree with, you respectfully sit there through the applause…What would/could have motivated Mr. Wilson to yell out that way? that was a total lack of respect for the highest office in the land, and I contend, that he couldn’t even refrain himself in that setting, because for him, it was nothing more than just another “n****r” behind the microphone, and his “natural” instinct caused him to react that way…He has since apologized for his outburst…I wonder if this apology is as “sincere” as Michael Richards, Dog the Bounty Hunter or Don Imus! Wake up people, Obama has riled all these closet racists up, and they are livid right now, and they will start taking out there frustration on innocent Blacks…Protect your Neck Black family!

Racism does exist and it’s concept is one of White Supremacy…The two go hand in hand. That being so; your comments are inane to say the least. Furthermore your statement: “racism” hasn’t been used as a scarecrow to keep non-whites from even attempting to do certain things…” is absurd as many non-whites (as you so cleverly side step the issue of Blackness) have done many things—CHECK your history, and many are continually trying, whether young or old. I make note of your clever usage of: “our Blackest president yet,” as it appears you are actually avoiding the real issues and would rather deal with the superficial.

See…not all Black people are blind and stupid, as you would like us to think. Yes, we do read in between the lines and know when a halfhearted attempt is being used simply to incite rather than discuss real issues.

Where does one start to dissect this essay is you can call it that. This thing is flawed on so many levels 5 Black presidents get real. The justice department buys and destroys books, Jefferson supposedly burns and hides all proof that he is Black, but Willy and them said Billy Bob told my friends uncles mom, so it must be true. RK Byers you can do better than this.

One would be in illusion to say that racism does not exist. It is a disease that can be cured only when we cease to deny it IS.

You only need to listen to the reactions of people since 9/11, Michael Jackson’s death, and Obama’s election to realise racism still exists.

After 9/11 black people were targetted as Islamics even if they weren’t. Shops ran by black people were burnt down, black people were beaten up in the streets, schools, some even killed, and many black people got hate mail from neighbours.

England began pushing out immigrants of the country and separating families as a result because they thought we were getting too many black people in the country.

After Michael’s death people said some horrific things about him related to his race and to his 2004 trial and have also thrown abusive racist remarks against his associates and his family. If you think about how black people used to be called decades ago during the time black people were treated like slaves you’d realise that the names people called Michael is no different and hints at racial motivation from people who are using the accusations as a means to spit out their racial hatred despite the truth about his innocence being crystal clear.

When President Obama was elected people were so afraid he’d be assassinated of his first public appearance because he’s black that they had squads all over the place watching. Even I was worried some white supremist might try to make a move on him.

Just a week ago I was out in the Trafford Centre with a friend of mine and she queued up at the wrong line to get a burger and ended up at the neighbouring kebab stand. After she realised her mistake she moved away and then said outloud to me “Those P*kis, I hate them! They’re only here for their passports.” I spoke firmly and calmly to her that she should not ever speak like that in my presence again and I was so ashamed I left her alone in the queue.

It makes me ashamed to be white sometimes that I wish I was black myself so that I’m not associated with the smug white populace who think they’re supreme and feel the brotherly love that white people have forgotten.

I’ve been black all my life, it is all i know, so how can a person who has never been me, can understand what i go through everyday of my life! I was on (YouTube) today, and read some of the most racist comments from whites since my childhood. They were talking about a black person whom they thought was racist, but all i could read was n****r this, and n****r that! How can you fight hate with hate, how can you justify racism with racism? The more the comments came, the more stabs they made at blacks as Drug Users, and Welfare Check Recipients, then out of no where someone write WHITE POWER! I knew all along where this was heading, and even non americans added fuel to the fire by putting Obama into the mix, some whites started calling Obama,Osama saying that Obama is a racist and that he is the cause for America’s downfall, but if iam remembering correct he has only been in office least than a year ,and it was 40 some presidents before him who put the economy in the position it is now!

As long as people believe that there are different races then racism will exist. There is only one race the human race, we must follow the teachings of MLK and work toward a color blind society.

Yes, racism exists…now, what’s the point of your essay because it could have been so much deeper. You started to bring up some valid points but it looks like you gave up on finishing them! C’mon, now…

Racism does in fact exist. Moreover, it is overblown and used as a scapegoat, because too many black people are too lazy to take a stand and do something with their lives. They are too afraid of offending people.

Black people do more damage to their selves than white people ever have or ever can do. The power really is within YOU. Check out my blog:

My guess is that after nearly 500 years of 77 of those we were slaves, and the anti black sat comfortably and firmly on their azzes my Sablady. So I guess we are just a little bit more physically than mentally tired. I mean with being brought over on those cruise ships, we are a little worn out after we found out that we were the motor. Scape goat,….aaah ..I don’t think so. I mean with the most respected leader of the free world (Obama) being called a liar on national tv and while addressing the nations leaders …nope don’t think so, at least not as far as talk TV/Radio are concerned.Far all of my ..as you put it.. lazy people who stand for nothing… We are still only as strong as our weakest chain. They should get prayers and not admonishment, In short help them find their way out of the darkness that you feel that you have found, Like Forty(E)said we all have them in our FAMILY

@ R.K. Byers, The subject you should have addressed is “Will Black People Ever Learn To Listen First Then Ask Question” Here we are 50 years later from the Civil Rights Movement and we have a “BI-RACIAL” President and everybody is on his bandwagon but still dont know any of his agenda or policies. First of all if u clearly do your research u will see that Abraham Lincoln was the quote on quote “First Black President” but logic and the history books dont stretch back that far for most, but if u have any idea of how our currency is valued or do some reserch on that, you’ll understand. Unity over Dispute then we can address racism, until then I advise u to read as many policies and law docs as possible and a few books might help as well and google what u dont comprehend.

If you can get rid All the white people doing dirt toward other races (especially Blacks), end joblessness, illnesses, and each other attacking one another over non important issues, and promote MORE oppotunities of Scholarships and Jobs (like the Goverment do with other people NOT born in United Staes), and provide better education especially in the poor areas, and most importantly LOVE for onr anothee then racism will no longer exists,
for the hater, put them on a island and let their asses practice their evil, brecause that’s the last thing the U.S need in this century….

john hanson 1781-1782 first black president, a moore. google it. racism is hate and fear. It’s been here and it isn’t going anywhere. Now what? This country was bought and sold several decades ago. Federal Reserve? who and what is that? it might shock you. GOOGLE IT. Please people don’t let this small petty stuff fool you. There is a bigger picture to see an its right in front of you. Obama is who he is and can only do what they allow him too. Educate your selves and free your mind of what you think you know, only then will you be free. One question, who is the prince of this world? Now is there any question it is what it is! THINK!

if you have to question it, then yes it does STILL exist! i wish people would just face the fact that WE as black people are here, we’ve been here, and we arent going anywhere!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MsMerising/ MsMerising

Yes, racism exists. However, it is not confined to one culture – it is practiced across the board. Truth be told, I can count the ‘white’ people I hear that talk smack about other cultures on one hand a year where I usually cannot go a day without hearing an African-American friend complain about some other cultural group. What I also find interesting is how folks are saying ‘white’ people are turning on Obama. Obama garnered 48% of the ‘white’ vote. It is the other 52% who are working to reverse that reality come next election term. Strategy folks, ugly, but it’s called strategy. Thankfully we appear to have more critical thinkers amongst our populace who can actually SEE said hysteria as nothing but spin-doctoring to implement the conservative agenda once again in a position of power to the TRUE detriment of the American population.

However, I will also there are some people who when they do not get their away about everything cry ‘racism’ which is not always the case. If you drive around the block 10 times high and the police pull you over, don’t cry racism: you were HIGH and doing suspicious activity. If someone did not give you a job because you did not have the proper credentials don’t cry ‘racism’. And if you DID and you didn’t get the job, remember, there were a whooooooooole bunch of people with the ‘right’ skin tone who didn’t get the job, either.

America is a really interesting country to live in. I would go so far to say that most people in post-Modern America are actually not racist, they are just apathetic to the plight of most people unless they have a vested interest in a particular “group” (e.g. ‘Black’ political causs, gay marriage etc). Than we see HEATED passion and conviction emerge, lol.
