Being Black myself, loving me some me and feeling almost sorry for anyone that isn’t either me or Black, I’ve always been confused rather than offended anytime that someone from a smaller segment of society compared his or her ‘struggle’ to mine.

I remember being a little kid watching Reverend Robert Schuller on television one Sunday and he had two ‘little people’ on. They were twins and they were complaining about or explaining themselves as handicapped. Then one of them said, “There are lots of handicaps. Being Black is a handicap.” I remember thinking how absurd that is, knowing as I even knew then that being Black didn’t guarantee that you’d get one of those special license plates or that you’d get to park in one of those spaces right up close to the drug store.

Of course, the worst offenders of the “Black struggle is like our struggle” mantra are the homosexuals. I never once read in history class about the continent from which all the homosexuals were kidnapped. And although their 400 years of slavery was probably just as rough as ours, I’ll guarantee you that the homosexuals absolutely refused to abide by the fashions restrictions.

Don’t me wrong; I’m all in favor of gay rights, marriage, ect.—in America. If I had my own country, I’d make all the gays move here.

But what gays should realize when they compare their rights movement to ours is that they are conceivable offending some people that would otherwise be in their collective corner. Negatively comparing the progress of your rights movement to ours is like suggesting that when we have rights that you don’t, the greatest conceivable injustice has been done. Like we Blacks should always get our rights only after everybody else has already been taken care of.

Finally, Sarah Palin was in the news (again) yesterday. Surprised? This time, she was blasting White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel because he said that a proposal to air attack ads against fellow democrats that oppose President Obama’s health care initiative was ‘f—king retarded’.

Palin, the mother of a ‘special needs’ child with Downs syndrome, likened Emanuel’s use of the term ‘retarded’ to using the ‘N-word’. This means that according to Palin’s math, Black=mentally challenged.

And being accused of being ‘mentally challenged’ by Sarah Palin is like the pot calling the kettle…

When the government talks about “MINORITY”, in actuality they are not talking about us. They know we are the majority, begin to see the world as whole and not just in a domestic eyes as we were thought in school. Theres a reason why they never backed people like Grandmaster Teacher Marcus Garvey and Malcolm because they view the world in a international manner.

The true minority when they create laws and bills are geared towards the 1% wealthy. Its politics and its wordplay.

OK Someone just had to reveal their stupidity in a blog sooner or later. The thought that you think that everyone wants to be “Black” is a crazy thought. There is nothing impressive about one community that can’t be found in another. Some may excel at certain things where others don’t.

Blacks number very little in the United States and don’t seem to be getting any more BLACKER. While Black gays seem to efficiently keep the AIDS within their own community (decimating it some more), and while Black gays lie to their women about who they sleep with, the pool shrinks more and more. Just where will all the role models for all non-Blacks BE if they keep up this very risky behavior?

It figures someone had to come up with a retarded reason explaining the world ACCORDING TO THEMSELVES. How unselfish of you. Maybe you need to wake up, U.S. Blacks aren’t exactly a role model for anyone these days, unless you like Rap (or other associated musical genres) or sports. The president is half AFRICAN and half white. Why anyone would want to follow some of you into ego-stroking? Most of what you do is embarrassing anyway. And then you talk about white people to no end.

I am Panamanian of Jamaican descent and I don’t have the same attitude that most of you seem to spew here. You seem to think that African Americans in the United States are so way up in the game that everyone is just utterly DYING to be you. Crazy that you even imagine such nonsense. Leave it up to you guys to hate on whites and then turn around and hate on others. Truth is aside from African, most of what you are is WHITE. So intetresting how you call them out, yet you yourself and your countrymen are DOMINANTLY mixed with it.

Look at the entertainment field where you have BLACKS tearing down other BLACKS. Can’t even decide how to make it in the world. I’d be nice to the world if I were the MINORITY, because someone forgot to tell you that Blacks are NO LONGER THE DOMINANT MAJORITY and may never catch up again.

Ok Mrbrmann25, this is a piggy back from yesterday’s discussion you and I had. Here is where we may “miss” each other. Although, it can’t be refuted that all human beings emanated from one, those offshoots have taken on a personality of their own so to speak. Like the grapefruit had its origins with the orange, it now has now developed its own, “unique” characteristics. Due to these differences, I don’t believe it’s now proper to say that they are the same fruit. Same goes for human beings. There has been significant changes from the original, and in my opinion, this has altered many of the characteristics, including the most important one, the thinking process to such a degree, it’s almost as if a new and separate people have been produced.

@SandraJ86. Your comment is severely misguided. I’m eagerly awaiting Califemme23′s response to you, but her actual words were Black and not exclusively African American. I’m not 100%, but judging by what she WROTE, that’s the conclusion I drew. Just curious what were you judging, since I don’t see the term African American used. The fact that you felt the need to tell us where your from and your heritage, suggests to me, that you have been victimized by this West Indian vs African American NONSENSE that is so prevalent among both groups. I was fortunate to be born in the Bahamas and grew up with people from all over, but raised in New York and experiencing this WI vs AA first hand. Above all that, I was really fortunate to have had my mind opened to see that this is played up by outside forces who don’t necessarily wish to see the two groups uniting. Same with our African, Central and South American brothers, and all those throughout the diaspora!
    Peace!

@SandraJ86…its impressive that you wanna call someones statement stupidity when your statement is just as IGNORANT…please explain to me where it just black gays who LIE to their women about who they SLEEP with and not ALL in the closet gays…and what is with this u.s. blacks not being role models…the ones of whom you speak do NOT DEFINE our race as a WHOLE and who in the hell are you to say that they do…you seem very ClOSE-MINDED and YOU are stereotyping a whole race and not the individuals whom believe what they believe before you start trying to speak about a RACE of individuals speak on what was said for I do not believe that every race is trying to be like us and we are a race of mixed descent as I am native american, black, creole, cuban among a few other things…but so what I am who I am and you are who you are but but before you say anymore ignorant a@@ sh$t get your facts straight because it seems that you are HATING on US!!

This article was a pretty good read and I’d have to agree with the writer.
In my opinion, these predominately white groups lean towards the African American experience of oppression when it serves them in making some point about how their lives are unfair. It’s as if they try to utilize “white guilt” in order to get their needs met. These are the same folks that will bail to their place of white priviledge if confronted about their own biases towards African Americans. For example, try to talk to them about slavery and the topic gets brushed off as ancient history. The Jewish Halocaust got just a nibble of the oppression but they rarely/if ever compare themselves to blacks.

**maybe they want their (black history month) too! muah ha ha
Why is it when there are bad statistics …blacks or black people are always brought up or compared to?! GRRRR! not trying to be racist here but…

@Califemme23 i agree with most of what you are saying, but some people wont UNDERSTAND it… and @_A_ you bring up very good points that gets over looked ALOT the thinking process alone has changed! (kind of had to)
YES! its dam beautiful to be black and in truth ALMOST EVERYONE wants to come to our parties in some shape or form, YES! we do have a sad sad point in our history BUT looking at ancestory its not our own fault… i feel we turn the other cheek to easily… thats just me.
WE (all BLACKS in general)are more like weeble wobbles ROTF… We have fallen alot (mainly because others history has hidden the fact that almost EVERYONE has stolen from Mother Africa, or had to take something from her to help THEM gain something) due to land wars (North vs. South Africa), trade wars(Blood Diamonds/Gold and Fur trades) to slavery (speaks for itself)…but we get back up, other cultures are still trying to come up from being knocked down.
Here is a fun fact rumor… not that it makes too much of a difference but it is said that ‘other’(without the description) on a census form is added to ‘whites’. Wasnt this normally used because you were not supposed to select ‘two or more races’(Multicultural). BUT most Indians complain about the words ‘American Indian’ just as we complain about Negro… come to think of it the friends i know who are Indian only say Indian or call out their actual colony. Maybe this is why their percentage is so low? …hmmm

    Stuff like this is fascinating.

… because a story of persevering against all odds is simply more commendable than one of static complacency, greed, manipulation, and decline.

It may also relate to the opportunity and incentive – or lack of the two – that an individual of a non-black minority has to form a cultural identity with their respective ethnic group.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Charmed2Def/ Charmed2Def

… nevermind, I thought the question pertained to racial/ethnic minorities, not interest groups, and GOP failures. My apologies for the confusing answer, I should have read the article first.

Sarah Palin is a true idiot. Retarded isnt a bad word. Retarded is the psychological medical term used by psychiatrist and doctors to diagnose someone with that affliction. You would think she would know this considering the fact that she has a kid who is RETARDED.

To compare that to the word n****r shows how out of touch that woman truly is.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/joshuakenoly/ joshuakenoly

Sarah Palins’ comments should be disregarde in the same way You disregard things that Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, Kanye West, my dog Fyido says. Their depth of understanding, expierince, and logic doesnt even exist, it is self aggrandizement to the 10th degree squared.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lvwickedman/ lvwickedman

The question put forth in the article is why other special interest groups compare their situation to ours. With out our normal racial chest thumping, can the answer just be a simple one? Our struggles in this country are amongst the most well doc**ented struggles in modern history. Our struggle for equality also happened to coincide with the growth of mass media.

In laymen’s terms, the world was able to watch the civil rights movement unfold on television, in newspaper articles and magazines. By watching the movement grow, change and be debated all members of society where able to gain a knowledge of it.

It is inevitable that these groups reference our experience when trying to explain their plight. My question to those of you out there who care to enter into debate is; why do we feel the need to be offended every time a group references our continued struggle? Think about your answer and I look forward to your responses.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/sotiag/ sotiag

I wouldn’t say every minority group identifies with black people reason being although they may have problems occurring in their life at that time it has not been a long life one. I say this because whether you are gay no one really knows by looking at you unless you present yourself in that manner or until you tell them and then you’re harassed. Also a person with aids no one knows until you confess it and then you’re harassed. Now being black a thing that comes natural and not easily hid tends to be a little more way different than others because people always have this perception of what they think you are. Not to mention although someone might be gay or another minority i can guaranteed they will be consider before a black person and thats real.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/earthling/ earthling

They do that in order to get black people to help them fight their battles and speak up for them, but black people should let these groups know that we have our own wars to fight, especially if these groups have absolutely nothing in common with our experiences.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/VIRGOMATIC86/ VIRGOMATIC86

I UNDERSTAND WHAT THE WRITER IS SAYING. I CAN UNDERSTAND WHY OTHER MINORITY GROUPS IDENTIFY WITH BLACKS, BUT IT PISSES ME OFF WHEN I HEAR GAY PPL COMPARE THEIR STRUGGLE TO OURS, NOT BCUZ THEY’RE GAY…I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH THAT, BUT A GAY PERSON SHOULD NOT COMPARE THEIR STRUGGLES TO BEING BLACK BECAUSE YOU CAN FAKE BEING “STRAIGHT” AND DENY BEING GAY, BUT YOU CANNOT FAKE ANOTHER SKIN COLOR OR DENY YOUR SKIN WHICH IS OUTWARDLY APPARENT AND FOR THAT REASON THEIR STRUGGLE DOESN’T COMPARE TO THE STRUGGLE WE’VE HAD THROUGHOUT THE YEARS BECAUSE THERE IS NO WHERE TO HIDE YOUR BLACKNESS.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/tia_de_la_bahia/ tia_de_la_bahia

No, most minority groups try to distance themselves from black people. Unless they have just enough intelligence to realize that blacks have fought for Civil Rights that have benefited all in this country, then they try to attach themselves to us. Ethnic minorities typically take for granted opportunities that they have here and hate on blacks.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/moniQTee/ moniQTee

It is OFFENSIVE and I check people with no problem all the time about this.

Being Black is NOT a “handicap” NOR is it a “birth defect” since many of them claim they are born that way.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Babyface843/ Babyface843

no I don’t see why any minority group can say they identify with us. I don’t even see why white who hang around black for a long time feel they can identify with us. The real question is why do we accept other groups into our circle? If it’s meant for and by black people then it should stay dat way. Stop givin in to others sayin they identify with us on any level. Quit the liberal bs cuz it really doesn’t apply to black people

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ldytrkdrvr/ ldytrkdrvr

Great article RK Byers. They just want to be us, but can’t. LOL! I think they think u can get free stuff or something. Despite all we been through and faught for we have succeeded in many was and areas to folks who have been here generations ahead of us and are still stugglling.
But kidding aside, I dont think they truly understand what it is they are saying or calling themselves realting to. The part that bothers me is those who have it going well for them because of the what we have gained as a race, but then look down at us like we are nothing. Don’t get me wrong I shake it off, but where does that come from? That look, just because, even from people who haven’t been in the country long. Am I getting off topic? ok, done.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzwatch/ jazzwatch

Black people are the path of least resistance…meaning as a collective whole other groups walk on our backs to get to the next dollar, position, level, or whatever. We are easily exploited as a whole and unfortunately, we do not speak out at the beginning of any exploitation and reject it. Asians dominate our hair products, arabs dominate the liquor stores in our neighborhoods (not that we need liquor stores in our neighborhoods but that is another story),white kids rap and break dance to the tune of big bucks, but when our children originate new styles (dance, music, clothes) it doesn’t generate revenue that stays in our community. As a people, we allow this abuse, and until we “just say no” it will continue.

The homosexual movement is funded and politically driven by rich white men who laid out a plan to ride on the backs of MLK and civil rights by associating a lifestyle with the immutable characteristic of skin color.

There are many black people that agree with them and have even embraced this lunacy, thereby advancing their agenda. They don’t give a damn about black folks, but we are a convenient path of least resistance.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/missionmom/ missionmom

First off, people with developmental disabilities and intellectual disabilities are far from a minority. They aren’t copying you. They’re just reaching out and asking for respect. The question should be why can’t we hear what other groups are asking for and why do we think we have the license for pain. These people can’t even defend themselves. They’re vulnerable. Why can’t we stop using the word retarded if it hurts them.
A slur is a slur is a slur. It cuts across all of us.
