Senate Passes Apology For Slavery And Segregation

By June 18, 2009 3:02 pm

The Senate has unanimously passed a resolution apologizing for slavery and racial segregation and sent the measure to the House.

Iowa Democrat Tom Harkin first introduced the measure years ago but wanted it passed Thursday on the eve of Juneteenth – a day of celebration commemorating the end of the Civil War and the release of African Americans from slavery. He said the House is to take it up soon and that a formal celebration will be held next month in the Capitol Rotunda.

The Senate has passed such nonbinding but highly symbolic resolutions before, apologizing for such things as the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II.

The resolution passed Thursday includes a disclaimer saying that nothing in it supports or authorizes reparations by the United States.

I am: A proud African,Well,,But coming to these an issues.concerning an Apologie and slavrie,Im ashamed and guilty, again,,not proud of africa at-all,Infact,,I dont know where to start,,,

this step supposed to be first taking by african leaders, and his people, become mouth for mouthless-ones,they should,I mean,,,
we africans knew too-well about this issue, its an inportant issue still to be solve betwin the European(west)and All african nations and all african diasporal,in my own opinion,,,,

    whatever they want to tackles,
    Africa MUST-MUST be included,
see,, this issue must be met,so that,,all the souls of our love ones that died and surfferd with multiple things words cant express, will finaly regard as humans,

In all these,, I think,, if time can be turns back and we have chances to ask our love ones what they realy wants?, from we that is now representing them, they may answers,,,,,
we need regardness c**memoration from First All western europe and African-Nation

    Indeed,,,this Issue has been going-on my mind for a long time,now,,am a bite relieved,honestly,

No amount of financial compensation will erase the past but it needs to be given nonetheless. It should be in the form of direct compensation as well as funding for beneficial social programs and community development. In this way individuals that want to waste their money on material things can do so and the next generation can still get some benefit. Sadly none of this will change the level of disrspect from outside the Black community nor will it boost the self-esteem and change the lack of intellct and self-respect of those within the community.

WHY CANT WE GET MONEY? EVERY ONE ELSE DID. ALL WE GOT WAS DISCRIMINATION AND MISTREATMENT. WE NEED SOMETHING MORE THAN AN APOLOGY. IM SORRY.

That so called apology is VERY late in coming.Where is the mule and 40 acres? Of course I do not expect that but we the
descendants of people that was kidnapped and brought to a country that white people was too sorry and lazy to build for themselves, deserve what our force labored ancestors (slaves)did not receive. We should have a choice provided by the United States and all countries and people who profited from the slave trade. We should have a choice between having:

FREE NO COST COLLEGE EDUCATION (or) A HOUSE AND LAND IT SIT ON (or) FREE AND CLEAR STOCKS IN THE COMPANIES AND WHITE FAMILIES THAT BENEFITED FROM THE SLAVE TRADED.

That apology is empty and worthless.

Apologies? For what? Don’ pay me no mind. My forebears were killing jews, not enslaving ni**ers

I really don’t want a check, I want the truth and Freedom. Can I have that please.

well as far as i am concerned an apology will not mend the torn families, give back the stolen innocense of the rape virgins. Nor will it bring back lost culture or lives.but with 1.5 million i could start to heal, find my real family roots, visit my true homeland, and make sure my seeds don’t feel too much more of the left over poverty many families endured from lack of education. The money won’t solve all the problems, but it will give some justice to a nightmare that should have never occured, and is still tainting the lives of it’s survivors . Obama let’s make this the next bail out, this has been an overkill, when it comes to the disrespect we have suffered. i will stop there because i am about to unleash a beast in me that can’t be tamed.4 real 4real

I’d accept if they’d give me 1.5 million, a full auto .45 tommy gun, a full auto browning automatic rifle, a full auto MP5, a full auto 7.62 Avtomat Kalashnikov, an M1 garand, a full auto M16, a full auto M249, a chrome .50 AE desert eagle, and a full auto .45 Kriss super V…all in the back of a fully gassed jet black maybach…I’M NOT JOKING. Aside from that, there can never be apology enough because the effects are still felt today.
