UPDATE: Burress Suspended By Giants
UPDATE: The New York Giants suspended star receiver Plaxico Burress this morning.
New York Mayor, Mike Bloomberg spoke out against Plaxico Burress yesterday, saying “I think it would be an outrage it we didn’t prosecute to the fullest extent of the law, particularly people who live in the public domain, who make their living because of their visibility. They are the role models for our kids.”
Watch Bloomberg Discuss Plaxico Burress
Burress’ lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, wrote in an e-mail to The Associated Press on Sunday that he was advised the player planned to plead not guilty to criminal possession of a weapon. “I do not expect that Mr. Burress will make a statement,” Brafman wrote. He met with Burress for about an hour Sunday at the player’s home in New Jersey.
“I would ask that his fans, the Giants and the media withhold judgment in this matter until all of the facts have been disclosed,” Brafman wrote to the AP.
Brafman is a well-known criminal lawyer who has defended mobsters and other high-profile figures, including hip-hop impresario Sean “Diddy” Combs on a bribery and gun possession charge in 2001.
Burress shot himself at a Manhattan nightclub Friday night and was released from a hospital early Saturday, the Giants said.
UPDATE: Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce was interviewed by NFL security about teammate Plaxico Burress‘ accidental shooting, general manager Jerry Reese said before New York’s game against the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
Pierce reportedly was present Friday night at New York City’s Latin Quarter nightclub in East Harlem when Burress shot himself in the right thigh, the latest dramatic turn in a tumultuous season of fines and suspension for the Super Bowl champions‘ star receiver.
Reportedly, Burress was trying to retrieve the weapon after it had slipped down his pant leg when the gun went off.
Neither Reese nor Giants president and CEO John Mara would say what Burress’ status with the team might be going forward.
“I want to wait until we find out all the facts and circumstances before we make any determination,” Mara said. “I don’t know what happened there, and until we find out exactly what happened, I’m not going to make any comment or make any decision about what his future is.”
Pierce, meanwhile, was active Sunday. He was questioned by league personnel at the Giants’ team hotel Saturday, Reese said, although the GM wasn’t sure whether Pierce talked to police.
Reese and Mara said they hadn’t spoken to Burress, who hurt his hamstring two weeks ago and was going to miss the game against the Redskins because of that injury.
“I reached out to him,” Reese said. “I did not get a return phone call.”
Mara repeatedly said the Giants would cooperate with the police and the NFL in their investigations.
Asked if he knows what the scope of those inquiries are, Mara said: “I do not know, no. I guess the circumstances of how he got shot, whose gun it was. There are a lot of questions like that that are still unanswered.”
The team has released a statement saying, “Our primary concern is for Plaxico’s health and well-being, and given the circumstances, we are relieved to say he was released from a New York City hospital.”
Two weeks ago, Burress injured a hamstring in a game against the Baltimore Ravens. The Giants had said yesterday that he would not be playing tomorrow against the Redskins in Washington.

1 2 Next »bloomburg should get prosecuted for signing that Bill even tho it was voted against, to allow a third term… he did that shyt illegally, f**k him
Gee, I wonder if this would be the same case if Eli Manning shot himself in the leg at a night club?? C’mon lets call this for what it is!!!RACISM!!!Bloomberg…yeah whatever…im not even gonna give credence to what he has to say… A brotha get a little money…I guess this is just one the ways of teaching ppl who voted a certain way a lesson…LoL!! ofcousre the man is somewhat of an idiot… I mean who shoots themselves in the leg and the GETS PROSECUTED?!?!?! Damn good thing he didnt commit suicide…Get him for illegal possession of a firearm, but for shooting himself thats crazy..
IIt goes to say anytime a person of color has a protection piece it become an outrage by the other race so we as black people get the book thrown at us and procxuted to the fullist extentt of the law whereas the other race usually gets a slap on the hand. This is why so many of out young people are in this new frorm of SLAVERY ( Jail)What the mayor is doing is another form of slavery. As of today in other states gun sales aree at a all time high even some state are letting as young as 18yrs purchase guns and ammo. In my state your background check is done. Can not verify for the whites but blacks are checked and a waiting period is administered.
The mayor of NY is b usiness as usual as most of the U S A when it come to a person of color.
I know someone who shot themselves in the Leg… same story… He didn’t go to jail oor get prosecuted by the law… Plexico is just a normal person too..
Everyone has a valid point, but keep in mind that Plaxico has to be held accountable for his actions. Just because he has money does not mean that he is immune from the laws… By the hand of man, we are wrong if we charge a man with money, we are wrong if we DON’T charge a man with money. We can NOT pick and choose who is held accountable and this is DEFINITELY not a race issue….You do stupid things, bad things will happen to you.
Plaxico is grown and knows what the rules are…EVERYONE knows what the rules are. The shooting incident is one of many incidents just this year!!! You make millions of dollars and you miss a meeting because you have to take your son to school? Tell me that he doesn’t have a driver and at the very least tell me that he can’t make a phone call to let someone know….Sometimes we are not mature enough to handle success and this clearly falls in that category.
LOL THIS DUDE SHOULD GET DUMMY OF THE YEAR AWARD
I feel that it is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS to even CONSIDER any type of prosecution of this man SIMPLY due to the MONEY HE MAKES!!! If a regular JOE BLOW had actually SHOT HIMSELF!? we would be LAUGHING about how STUPID he is but due to the FACT this is a BMWM(black man with MONEY)they(U KNOW WHO U R) Want to STRING HIM UP and hang him out to dry!!!COME ON ACT RIGHT did this statement of VENDICATION really come from a MAYOR that lives in Nigga Your Covered???N Y C= COVERED by the POLICE with bullets that is!!! REALLY get of of it. The flip side of the coin is this ALTHOUGH he SHOT HIMSELF he WAS in a PUBLIC PLACE and the WEAPON WAS NOT SECURED there SHOULD be SOME SORT OF PENALTY for that it is just a BLESSING it was HIM and NOT someone else. SO fine the man or what have you and LET IT GO!!! I am MORE AFRAID of the POLICE there than i am ANY RESIDENT (I may need my wallet for i.d. and try to reach for it while leaving my home for work one morning 2000)!!! PLEASE PLEASE check your RECORD BLOOMBERG and be CAREFUL LORD KNOWS what skeletons are in YOUR CLOSET!
guys keep this in mind when u c**k your own gun it will shoot back at you .and i guess it hurts so keep the safe on it
Its sad they will put anybody in jail now instead of them goin out and arrestin drug dealers and murders they arrestin a man who SHOT HIMSELF why is he in trouble for shootin himself?
the man is an idol out here in the world trying to live a normal life and trying to keep himself from being a target for violence. some guys don’t want an ontourage of people around them all the time. that attracts attention he was having a good time by him self, we he felt he ad to have his gun with him just in case. it slipped down his pants and went off and shot Him in the leg not no one else. So why is he being prosecuted so severely. the NFL need to stand up and not speak for the players, especially when not knowing all the facts. get it together and come up with a better system for our young athletes so they can feel safe when out in the real world.
This is a mess. This man shot himself, not someone else. he injured himself. Is there any reason why he should be prosecuted?? this is ridiculous…hmmm
You know of course a white man in a power posistion will call a press confrence on prime time t.v. just to announce he would feel outraged if he is not PERSECUTED to the full extent of the law. Who care what you think Bloomberg im sure you were raised that way, and a far as Plax goes he just has to keep his head up and take whatever comes to pass because it will pass and he will move on to a better day. to those players involved they too either will keep it real or do whatever they can to save face i’m sure they all knew he had a weapon and i’m sure that wasn’t the first time. but they need to understand when u have enough money to pay for security then pay for the security! Last but not Least Is Matt Jones (white wide receiver Jacksonville Jags) still playing every sunday after possession of cocane charges and isnt that part of the substance abuse policy in the NFL wow! where was the press conference about that???
That man is human ..not a hero or role model, especially not for my kids. He did something stupid. How ridiculous he must feel screwing up his career by shooting HIMSELF in the leg by accident. People are trying to blow this out of propotion he does deserve to be fined. Maybe even community service but jail time is ridiculous. I can see if he pulled it out to threaten someone….imagine how stupid he must feel.
I have to agree with mskathy02 and hellovanilla and them other ones is hipocrits they sound real stupids to be adults f**k dat i think everybody should a gun cause if you live where i live everybody is a target anybody is used for a quick come up even junkies are target and the try any thing to bring you down when you doin good even if theres no real reason for you to be locked up i been in predicaments like that
I do believe that the only reason a celebrity would be a “role model” for someone’s children is because that PARENT isn’t doing a good enough job to present themselves as a credible role model. Trust me if former NY Governor Eliot Spitzer had committed the his sex for hire crimes in NY I’m quite sure Bloomberg would find just cause to “look the other way” and withhold comment. Remember this is the same Bloomberg that supported the rouge NYPD officers that shot unarmed groom to be RON BELL over 40 times only minutes after his bachelor party. Not Surprising Bloomy…focus on real crime. I’m sure Mr. Burress could do a whole lot more good for the city of NY as a free man than as a tenant of Rikers. If Plexico’s last name was “MANNING” I don’t think we’d see the MAYOR taking such a high profile stance on the crime and punishment side.
Who said he was anybody’s hero or role model? there’s nothing more hypocritical than people ranting about how athletes and rich people are no better than normal folks, then turning around and asking them to be role models and heroes just because they’re famous. He’s just a dummy with a lot of money and Steve Smith is the one we should be concerned for. Note: if you don’t know how to use a gun, it’s NOT more safe for you to have one, it’s LESS safe.
The law sucks anyway b/c they don’t prosecute killers,x con,and rapest to the fullest but want to prosecute someone for shooting their self is stupid. Hell it could have been worse but it wasn’t. He is human too, it have alot of people carry guns everyday, he paid for it and got papers on it, get over it sensitive azz people. And just b/c he play ball doesn’t mean he is a roll model, it’s a job. When you go to work you not trying to be a role model you going to make that money to provide for your family. So in my opinion he should get a warning or a ticket no jail time.
I agree with Mayor Bloomberg.
Burress needs to be held accountable. He is a role model for our kids. His actions were deplorable and the New York Giants and the Hospital should have called and informed the police. Why did the police have to hear about it via the media. Thank
God for them. Our professional
atheletes need to be more responsible with their actions. I hope and pray that justice prevails and Burress doesn’t go free because of a
high powered attorney.
I agree with most people on this but i also think celebrity’s should have guns permits them are looked at as main target a quick come up in most eyes but bodyguards can have weapons and not everybody feels safe with bodyguards they only can see so much and do but thats just me.
In reply to brownsugar1089:
Maybe you didn’t read the whole story, but, when Burress decided to take a loaded gun in PUBLIC, it became everybody’s business. That’s why we have gun laws.
He accidentally shot himself this time, but that could just as easily have been an employee of the restaurant or any innocent bystander out to enjoy themselves.
i really wish that sooner or later our heros and role models learn to be just that and stop being so foolish…this was an incident that was never supposed to have happened…so do we tell the future football players thats its okay to be a gangsta on the football field…Where did we loose sight of it all???
i think if he shot himself in the foot . that is his business, what does it have to do with the anyone else .
WITH ALL THAT MONEY HE MAKES. WHY IN THE HELL WOULD HE BE SO GODDAMN STUPID!!! IT GOES TO SHOW JUST BECAUSE YOU GOT MONEY DON’T MEAN S**T. YOU ARE STILL HUMAN AND YOU DO MAKE MISTAKES. STUPID ONES AT THAT
WHAT A DUMBASS, I DONT FEEL SORRY FOR HIM. NOT ONLY DOSE HE HAVE MONEY TO HIRE BODY GUARDS. BUT WHY IN THE HELL DONT THESE STUPID ”FAMIOUS” PEOPLE GET THERE GUN PERMITS WHAT THE F**K…..IF I CAN GET ONE I KNOW THEY HAVE THE MEANS TO GET ON.
I agree with the Mayor in this case. What’s Burress doing with a loaded, concealed, unregistered weapon? Surely he can afford to hire bodyguards to protect him LEGALLY if he feels the need.
Not to mention, with all his money, he doesn’t even to need to go out clubbin. He could bring the party to his nice, big house and never have to worry about situations like this.
