The General vs. The Bigot: Cheney’s Choice of Leader

By Casey Gane-McCalla May 12, 2009 4:57 pm

While Dick Cheney’s endorsement of Rush Limbaugh might carry the weight of any other supervillain’s endorsement, it is still significant. When Dick Cheney, still one of the most recognizable faces of the Republican Party, chose Rush Limbaugh over Colin Powell, he chose racism over service to your country, divisiveness over diplomacy, and anger over prudence.

Since the Republicans value military service, family values and patriotism so much, it is strange that Cheney would pick Limbaugh. Here’s a comparison of the two.

Education

Powell
Grew up poor in the South Bronx yet managed to graduate from City College.  Received M.B.A. from George Washington University, after his second tour in Vietnam in 1971.

Limbaugh
Grew up rich and flunked out of college after two semesters

Military Service

Powell
41 years of service from private to general

Limbaugh
Draft dodger

Family Values

Powell
Married for 46 years, with one child

Limbaugh
Thrice divorced, no children

Racism

Powell
None to speak of.

Limbaugh
Top 10 Racist Quotes

Sexism

Powell
None to Speak of

Limbaugh
He said:  “Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society,” and also, “We’re not sexists, we’re chauvinists — we’re male chauvinist pigs, and we’re happy to be because we think that’s what men were destined to be. We think that’s what women want.”

Patriotism

Powell
50 years of serving his country under both political parties

Limbaugh
Blind loyalty to his country when his party is in power. Wants his country to fail when it isn’t.

Legal Problems

Powell
None to speak of

Limbaugh
Was accused of laundering money to illegally buy prescription pills. Prosecutors agreed to drop the charge if Limbaugh paid $30,000 to defray the cost of the investigation and completed an 18-month therapy regimen with his physician.

Approval Rating

Powell
80%

Limbaugh
26%

Cheney says that Powell was a Democrat because of his endorsement of Barack Obama. He clearly didn’t listen to a word Powell said when he endorsed Obama. Powell wasn’t abandoning Republican values or principles but was decrying the racism and divisiveness the party was promoting. By choosing a racist, sexist, hate spewing entertainer over a respected, fair ex-general, Cheney is illustrating the new ugly face of the Republican party. A party with no ideas, a party that caters to racists and bigots and a party that wants America to fail.

i want cheney to keep on talking because he will eventually talk himself into jail or prison for privateering and war crimes let alone racism and fraud.
does anybody remember the swearing in day, who was the only one sitting when there was nothing wrong with him! he thinks of a president as another sucker he gets to tell what to do. he was not about to stand up for a black man becoming president, thats why hismajesty was wheeled in his chair. he was showing his TOTAL dissing of PRES. OBAMA by sitting on his hands and his FAT ASS!!!

Why are we even discussing an issue Cheney spoke on? Clearly he did not know what was going on in the office, so y are we even letting him tinkle our minds. He was clearly the only person that would sit back and let George do what he did. He was just a face for VP. He never made a decision w/o George second guessing him even if it made sense. Because he never was VP cuz of smarts. He is a business man, not a policy man. Dumb ol’ phuck.

HarlemRose, I think you’re dead on! Powell couldn’t stomach the right wing agenda anymore, particularly the foreign policies and covert ops. And with the way the Bush administration hung him out during that first term, I believe his wife in fact may have told him that enough was enough. I’ll never forget his speech to the U.N. with him performing his final act for the Cheney/Bush administration. As long as Rush and Dick spearhead the voice of the GOP, the Dems should stay in power. Honestly, as a registered Dem, I sometimes wonder if that’s the best thing for this country as well. We must remain vigilant and hopeful.

    Keep On….

Colin Powell is a Republican who believes in the ideals that the party was founded on, but has abandoned in favor of non-progressive views on race, women, science, and economics. You know, the bs that they allow themselves to be portrayed as. The Republican Party is failing and they know it. They’re trying hard to keep up with the times by promoting diversity in their party with Bobby Jindal and Michael Steele, but they fail to realize that it’s not just because Obama’ bi-racial that people like him. It’s because he is in sync with the needs of many people. He’s charismatic, intelligent, and pragmatic. The same qualities he shares with Colin Powell, which is why Powell bowed out of the Bush administration when he did. He just couldn’t out up with the bs anymore.
