T.I. and Al Sharpton March Against Gun Violence

By News One May 12, 2009 8:45 am

From New York Daily News

He’s going to prison for collecting heavy artillery, but rapper T.I. marched in Harlem Monday with his sights aimed at stopping gun violence.

The Grammy-winning artist joined the Rev. Al Sharpton at a rally honoring the memory of 13-year-old Christopher Owen and 17-year-old Cory Squires, both recently gunned down.

T.I., who is set to begin a year-long federal prison stint next week for possession of illegal firearms, urged city teens not follow in his footsteps.

“I carried guns and swung dope as a 13-year-old,” the 28-year-old Atlanta-born entertainer said. “I had my best friend taken away from me through guns. I was so hurt from the loss of his life, I didn’t take notice to the knowledge that I still had mine.”

Since pleading guilty in March to federal charges of illegally possessing machine guns and silencers, T.I.’s new motto has been “Bury Da Beef.”

father of six, T.I. implored kids to think before pulling a gun to settle differences, saying, “you’re not just killing a man, you’re killing a family.”

The government is the problem..When is America gonna wake up and realize that the laws here are unconstitutional..Black people better wake up especially because history has a tendency of repeating itself in America so slavery is right around the corner..how is it that a congress person make 174,000 a year but we in a recession?? We pay congress wake da f**k up America

This is for the guy Who doesnt know his facts and is just doing what White America wants you to do. Knock a black man for doing something positive. Second of all T.I. did not use a gun to commit violence he only did what is wriiten in tthe Bill of rights the right to bear arms to protect your house family or well being. But that is only for a select few. And yes his life may have started out cloudy and his music was thug motivated but like Lyfe Jennings says there are 2 things in life Change And Change. Give the guy a break. And not only that they entrapped him with a snitch that they caught buying guns illegally someone he knew. These celebrities live high profile lives and there are a lot of crazy people out there I cant say anyone is wrong for having a gun for protection I have one do you? And remember a Rose can grow out of concrete one of our greatest black mind-Icon-politcal voice was a pimp named Detroit Red B.4 he was Malcolm X. Just be glad he is now touching some kids life and doing a good job of it. He inspires me to want to do the same for some of the young kids that are around me and that is whats important.

i thought t.i. was in prison?

I applaud T.I….. it takes a big man to admit his mistakes, regardless what circ**stances it was under. Ppl fail to remember that he had left his previous lifestyle behind, and he slipped up. Just because he’s famous, we shouldn’t be treating him like he’s a super hero- be realistic, kids living in a violent lifestyle seldom will listen and take advice from someone who’s never been in their situation. He’s a positive role model because people can relate to him, and they know he understands their struggles.

You know what kills me is that T.I did not acknowledge that he was wrong by using a gun to comitte violence, until after he was caught. It takes federal charges for someone to turn they life around? IS that the message he is preaching? Because I feel that as a someone who has had the power to educate african american males about violence he dropped the ball in the begining because he should of apart of the solution from the begining, not after he did something as stupid as being caught with a gun? WE have to teach our fellow african americans from the begining that guns and violence are not ok, not after something tragic happends. Black males have a 50/50 chance of making it to be 25 and alive, T.I. should be letting his mentees know from the begining that violence is not ok, especially when its black on black crime. I respect the black men right now who don’t have previous criminal charges, and that are teaching our young men to be MEN from a early age, not to be gangstas, rappers and thugs. Its about the postive influences from a young age. These young boys learn fast and at young ages, how to use guns. T.I. its great that you want to help your community now, but I am not giving you credit for being late. You should of been apart of the solution a long time ago.

I have a lot of respect for T.I. He is willing to admit that he was a part of the problem at one point in his life. Now he has decided to make a change to correct the err of his ways, by mentoring people who are living like he used to. The average person won’t listen to someone who is trying to steer them in the right direction, unless they can break it down to them… T.I. can definitely do that… He is as real as real can be… I wish him the best…

  • 5-12-2009 3:06 pm

Do ya know why this man was buying guns?? Everyone got something to say, when ya all doing some sort of wrong, or could be doing better. His best friend took a bullet for him, and died. The bullet was for him. And the same people that killed his best friend are still after him… so put your self in his shoes, and don’t judge, b/c if it was me, i would of been buying the same damn guns. With life there is always enemy’s and struggles, life isn’t easy, especially when your in the spot light. Prepare yourself for anything, nothings ever wrong with that. Wars aren’t easy, from the smallest problem to the biggest. One decision can cost you your life… and that goes both ways. Stop judging and live ya life and be thankful you don’t have folks after you and you woke up this morning..

  • 5-12-2009 3:02 pm

This is good work that the brother T.I. is doing. I respect him for having such a big impact in that he’s able to influence other’s decision making. In the end half of the killings that go in the world or needless just iike the cause for which he was marching for. There are kids out here dying KIDS. Now thats just unnecessary and I’ll leave it at that.

  • 5-12-2009 2:59 pm

seriously… when are Black people going to stop hatin’ on each other? regardless of his intentions,he is putting a good message out there, and trying to save YOUR people!

comments with foolishness and grammatical errors like this:

“THUG LIFE TO ILL DIE GUN IS THE WAY OF LIFE AM NOT STOP 4 NO ONE GOOON”

proves that we need all the help we can get.

yeah, maybe he is reaping some sort of personal benefit, and maybe al sharpton is an opportunist; but there is a message that needs to be put out, and they’re helping to do that.

THUG LIFE TO ILL DIE GUN IS THE WAY OF LIFE AM NOT STOP 4 NO ONE GOOON

  • 5-12-2009 1:52 pm

T I is tripping ….. he’s acting like what he’s doing isn’t obvious lol, we all know that he’s doing it to get less time which kinda makes him look a lil soft for someone that wants to be so hard lol. But he’s still 1 of realist rappers out there.

  • 5-12-2009 1:43 pm

I don’t respect it. T.I. only did this “charitable” work to shave off some of his own time. He ain’t gonna be doing none of that when he gets out. He was a felon before…buying guns on parole and got caught. Hard to be a hypocrite in Hip-Hop.

  • 5-12-2009 1:09 pm

I RESPECT T.I. AND WHAT HE IS TRYING TO DO.AND WHAT HE HAS TO ACCOMPLISH.EVERYONE LEARNS FROM THERE OWN MISTAKES.NOT EVERYONE IS PERFECT,ONLY GOD CAN JUDGE HIM. GOOD LUCK T.I.AND TO THOSE PARENTS, MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU. MY MOTHER WAS KILLED BY GUN VIOLENCE.
