Van Jones, the Obama administration’s point person for the “green” movement, says more African-Americans are now embracing the notion that being environmentally friendly can also translate into jobs.
“People in urban environments are excited about it,” Jones told BlackAmericaWeb.com. “Young men and women can get in on the ground floor.”
Jones, an author and environmental activist, has been asked by the Obama administration to help shape its energy and climate initiatives, with special emphasis on creating economic opportunities for communities of color.
“Let’s green the ghetto first,” Jones said at a White House meeting earlier this year.
And black folks, Jones said, are starting to get it.
At a recent environmental seminar in Indianapolis – which usually turns out a few hundred folks – Jones said about 3,200 people showed up, and many in attendance were African-American men.
