Do not mistake the Tea Party protesters as racists. That there are some in the group, is inevitable and I guarantee you they do not speak for the majority. Tea Parties are not against Mr Obama personally and the heated protests have NOTHING to do with the fact that he’s black. I think it’s wonderful that we elected a black president and that speaks of the progress of this country regarding race relations. Please understand, Tea Parties protest the following:
1. Out of control govt spending & borrowing
2. The restoration of the Constitution
3. Excessive govt control
4. Taxes taxes taxes
5. The demise and loss of value of the US dollar
6. The fact that 40% of every tax dollar goes to pay interest on federal loans
7. The right of anyone no matter race religion etc to pursue happiness without govt restraints
8. “Spreading the wealth”
9. Weak national security
10. The expansion of govt entitlement programs while we bankrupt the one’s we already have

I see a lot of Bush bashing and nobody complained when they received those income credit checks and child tax credits from the government. That was his idea. There are some bad people people in the republican party but they do make some key points. people should get tax breaks and keep their own money regardless of what they make. This country’s motto is if you work hard, you can achieve and that is true in most instance. @losthiker31. You may be right when you say not all of the tea party participants are there for racial reasons. I have a question to all of you who are protesting the 10 items you listed though. Where were you 9 years ago, or in subsequent years when GWB was guilty of all 10 things you listed and you can add, drafting the Patriot act and TWO stimulus programs to that list? In fact, those items you have listed could have legitimately been made against every single President in the last 70 years. Well said _A_, the one thing nobody brings up when talking about government spending or taxes is; how the tax code is so rigged that the rich end up paying less taxes than the middle class or lets say we cut taxes, who’s going to pay for the Army, the FAA, police, firefighters, etc., etc. We as a country want everything and don’t want to pay for nothing. Just today the San Francisco to Oakland bay bridge had a 3 ft. piece of steel fall 100 ft. into the middle of rush hour traffic, thank God no one was hurt, now everyone will say “Oh that needs to be fixed” but no one is welling to accepted a $.05 tax on gas to do it. 9 years ago I was a 25 year old liberal happily getting my facts from standard media. I voted for Gore in 2000 and Kerry in 2004. And then in 2008 I heard the phrase “we need to spread the wealth around” and was f****** enlightened. I do feel that some conservatives, not all, a fearful of a shift in this country toward African-American progress and away from Whites. Teabaggers also can’t have it both ways – you want a big gun toting military to bully the rest of the planet it has to get paid for. Would you like to cut taxes? Great, lets start with cutting the military drastically and getting away from foreign entanglements (i.e. Monroe Doctrine)and start using that money to repay the Social Security Trust Fund and pay off the National Debt. While we’re at it, why don’t we shift to a sustainable economy with locally sourced renewable energy rather then depending on fossil fuels or nukes? Then we could begin to see real economic growth.

The thing that really bothers me is Teabaggers going on about taxes as if they were part of the top 5% of money earners in the country. For the most part they are not, they are more like “Joe the Plumber” with a dollar and a dream and no license work as a plumber himself. Taxes provide for the broader society in so many wonderful ways and could do even more (i.e. better schools, universal healthcare, medical research, etc). I say this from the vantagepoint of living and working in Brooklyn with some of the richest and poorest side by side trying to get by. I’m tired of retirees on medicaid complaining about Obama’s plan for publicly funded healthcare – what the hell do they think they are already getting.

Enough – add to a positive movement for the greater good or shut the hell up.

As a conservative white tea-partier, I can’t say I have heard any of my friends voice any of the concerns mentioned above. We tend to focus on the legitimate issues like, where Obama is taking this country, fiscal responsibility, etc. It has nothing to do with his skin color or who gives a rip about the first lady. And we fear redistribution of wealth from those who earned it to those to are too lazy to, not white to black.

To losthiker31: first my point was that if you make 2.5 mil. in a given year and I make 150,000 by time your accountants finish finding tax shelters, and loopholes in the tax code you might pay 60,000 in taxes and I’d might pay 45,000. Now the person that made 2.5 is paying more than the one making 150,000 but the income to “actual” tax ratio is in favor of the person that made the 2.5. Now these numbers are just pulled out of thin air as an example, but you get the meaning. And as for the link you posted, it only makes since that if you make millions of dollars a year you SHOULD pay a little more in taxes. One question I’ve seen asked but you have not answered is where have you and your tea baggers been for the past 20 years when unimaginable waste was going on in the Federal government? So I would say that it does have a little to do with race. It amazes me how these tea baggers are always standing up for the top 1% of tax payers when they are most likely in the bottom 50%.

If you had read the report with an open mind you would’ve seen that the rich already pay a LOT more taxes than any of us. The poorest people pay very in taxes as it is and actually TAKE 4% of tax revenues in the form of refunds, credits, etc. But anyway, if you’re not gonna read with objectivity, I won’t waste my time with you.

And yes, where were we for the last few decades? I personally, had my head up my ass and voted for Kerry in 04 and Gore in 00. As of 2000, our national debt was about $6 Trillion, not scary. As of 2008, our national debt was $9 Trillion, getting scarier. In 1 year alone, it’s close to $12 Trillion. In 2019, it’s projected to be $19 Trillion. So that’s why, now, there is revolt, there are tea parties, there is devout opposition to govt spending.

But if it’s easier for you to make it about race and not about principle, nothing I or anyone can say to get you to open your eyes.

Bush’s tax cuts didn’t help at all. He added $3 Trillion to our national debt in 8 years. Don’t forget we had 9/11 spending, Iraq & Afghanistan. Iraq was complete f**k up, but still only accounts for about 1/3 of the total national debt in those 8 years.
