Arianna Huffington on Michelle ObamaI am not a fan of President Barack Obama, nor am I titillated by every second in the life of a little dog named Bo and two adorable girls named Sasha and Malia, even though they’re all extremely precious and make us all proud. To be honest, what I care more about is the wishy-washy, closet-conservative, imperialistic foreign politics of the father-in-chief. Still, every so often, I find myself feeling the need to come to the defense of First Lady Michelle Obama — and now is one of those times. So write it down and take a picture, because this will not happen again until the next blue moon.

On an episode of herBoth Sides Now With Huffington and Matalin” radio program, multimillionaire Arianna Huffington decided to take the First Lady to task for not being Black enough. Of course, she didn’t say, “Black enough,” she just said that Michelle Obama should be more like former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and visit “South Central.”

Huffington, whom I agree with on most matters, stated that the First Lady should avoid lavish fundr-aisers in swanky L.A. neighborhoods and focus more on demonstrating her compassion for people’s suffering:

“I’d love [Michelle] to be more [like] Eleanor Roosevelt right now, because the country needs an Eleanor Roosevelt who’s going to go around and at the same time that she’s doing fund-raisers in Beverly Hills and Bel Air … she should go to South Central [Los Angeles], I mean, if I were Michelle Obama right now, I would not go anywhere for a fund-raiser without going and seeing the places where there is pain, where there is struggle, where there is homelessness, where there is unemployment, because we need to bring that conversation to the center of the debate and there’s nothing like a first lady or … a candidate to take us there.”

Dear Arianna:

You can take your elitist criticism of Michelle Obama and shove it into a tall pile of money.

First of all, that area hasn’t been called “South Central” since 2003; it is now South Los Angeles. If that wasn’t the first clue that you have no idea what you’re talking about, what exactly would you have her do in “South Central” — get shot nine times like 50 Cent so she can have some street cred?

I agree that when the Obamas come to Los Angeles (besides wreaking havoc on the 405 freeway), the president is either speaking at a university, meeting with the Latino community or hob-nobbing in Hollywood. There definitely needs to be more of a focus on providing comprehensive outreach to the poor among us, but suggesting that the First Lady of the United States stroll through an urban war zone just so she can prove how “down” she is with the plight of suffering, unemployed, Black and Brown people, is about as insulting as Rick Santorum saying that it’s “remarkable” that Obama is pro-choice, considering that he’s Black.

Now that I’ve entertained your stereo-typical insinuations about “South Central,” let’s talk about reality. When was the last time you visited South Los Angeles, Ms. Huffington? Are you relying on clips of “Boyz in the Hood” and “Menace II Society” for your information, or have you driven through Compton and Inglewood and seen the neighborhoods for yourself?

Do you even know the ethnic make-up of South Central or are you still operating under the presumption that it’s over-run with poor,”suffering” African Americans? You do realize that it’s nearly half Belizean, Hispanic, and Latino, right? You do realize that there are thriving African businesses in Leimert Park, right? You wouldn’t just be throwing out the the most destitute, “ghetto,” Black place you could think of for our first Black First Lady to visit, would you? You didn’t open your mouth before familiarizing yourself with the affluent African-American neighborhoods of Baldwin Hills and Ladera Heights, did you?

I know you meant well, Ms. Huffington … or did you?

Because on second thought, it seems that you’re perpetuating the myth that the First Lady is an “uppity” Black woman who wouldn’t understand poverty if it smacked her in the face with a food stamp. With your statement, you join the exclusive club of people who brush over her hard-knock life, where her only riches were found in her family. You negate her work to eradicate obesity among children, specifically African-American children — obesity often being a symptom of poverty. You dismiss her efforts to attract grocery stores that sell fresh food to impoverished neighborhoods; you discount her push to provide tax-breaks to breastfeeding mothers — which, surprisingly [please, note sarcasm] is an issue facing many women in poverty who can’t afford to stay home to nurse their children.

But I guess those initiatives aren’t “Black enough” for you?  You’d rather passively endorse the Marie Antoinette drawing, Hawaii vacation-envying crowd who would prefer that a Harvard-educated attorney and Mother of two “visit” the hoods of “South Central” to prove how much she cares about Black unemployed people. That would be the equivalent of critics telling you that if you really care about your native Greece, then when you dined there with the Greek prime minister George Papandreou, you should have stopped in the hood — if you really care.

See how insulting and narrow-minded that is?

As the mastermind behind the merger of Huffington Post and AOL Black Voices and a keynote speaker at the National Association of Black Journalists, Ms. Huffington, it might be a good idea to familiarize yourselves with the many voices in the African-American community — and they aren’t just poor and suffering in South Central; nor, do many of us prefer a symbolic, executive drive through the hood to the necessary work that the First Lady is actually doing in those communities.

Michelle Obama is more than doing her part. If you must criticize anyone, then reserve that for the Commander-in-Chief, who is so afraid that conservatives will catch him uttering the word “poverty,” that he wouldn’t order Colors on Netflix.

First of all, while her honesty is respected……..Kirsten West Savali seems unfair to the president, especially considering his successes for the black community AND SHE misinterpreted what Huffington said.

Whatever Huffington’s statements, she DID play a strong media role relative to getting the President Obama elected…..or we would be living under John Mccain & Sara Palin which means unemployment benefits gone, vital services gone, no 1.2 billion to black farmers, no consumer protection agency or wall street regulation, no billion dollars for minority training, no affordable health care act, and many other improvements, that Kirsten West Savali takes for granted.

Huffington made a mild slip of the mouth but she isn’t mean spirited and just spoke her opinion. Perhaps huffington should have expressed her views to FLOTUS directly but fail to see a major gaffe in this story.

On the other hand, Kirsten West Savali, seems more mean spirited. MAYBE SAVALI WOULD LIKE TO BECOME PRESIDENT AND BE IN A POSITION WHERE SOME FOLKS DISAGREE WITH EVERY DECISION, A MILLION PEOPLE THINK YOU COULD ALWAYS “DO MORE”, MILLIONS MORE FOLKS HAVE NO CLUE ABOUT WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BE PRESIDENT, AND OTHERS THAT CAN NOT KNOW A PRESIDENT’S LONG RANGE PLAN.

I SAY, “HONEY IT IS EITHER THE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA…….. OR ROMNEY, PAUL, SANTORUM, OR N****RHEADRANCH PERRY.

We are most likely better off with the PPresident.

Huffington never said anything about “MORE BLACK.” That is some bulls**t Kirsten West Savali cooked up, in her mind.

Talk about making a mountain out of a mole hill and completely misinterpreting what one says just to stir something up, especially with that sensationalized headline.

Now Newsone is badgering the Liberals to protect their deities known as the Obamas. SMH.

of course thegrio and newsone are going to bash Arianna — huffingtonpost recently launched a “black voices” section and most people who visit it aren’t coming back to thegrio or newsone.. they will attack her as much as they can because she’s stealing all their readers!

not that i care, mind you, i think arianna huffington has a Lizard brain & has done more to drive journalism to the rock bottom than any other entity in the past 50 years. attack away.

There were some good points that the author made about Arianna Huffington. Her critique of Michelle Obama was totally insignificant and pointless. However, the author lost me on her comments about Michelle Obama and coming to her defense. What in the world is she harboring against the First Lady that deeply that would keep her from coming to her defense?? Particularly, with all the negativity that she has encountered. Some of the vicious things said about Michelle Obama is not just against her personally, it is a direct insult to black women in general. So for Ms. Savali to express those emotions towards the First Lady is pretty baffling and somewhat ignorant. She clearly has some serious chips on her shoulder. As a black women, I wouldn’t admit something so foolish, and certainly not in public, as not coming to the defense of Michelle Obama. That’s an embarrassment.

I do not think it matters what Arianna thinks this is a non story being blown out of all proportion. If Arianna knew anything then she would know that when Michelle is in New York she is in Harlem and when she goes to Chicago she visits the hood.It is patronising to expect her to do things that the other First ladies did not.Arianna was married to a man who ran for the Senate but lost and turned out to be gay, I am sure she did not campaign in South central.

@sunshine8oca: “Cooking up” would imply deceit. If you would like to hear what Ms. Huffington said, all you have to do is press play on the video that is provided for you.

For the record: I clearly state: Of course, she didn’t say, “Black enough,” she just said that Michelle Obama should … visit “South Central.”

It’s right there, in the article.

The reputation of South Central is that it is predominately Black. She could have said East L.A., or Koreatown, but she apparently felt that South Central was where the First Lady needed to visit, while totally disregarding the work that Mrs. Obama does in those communities. And she was passively co-signing the negative perception of the First Lady instead of touting these accomplishments. I usually agree with Ms. Huffington, but in this, her GOP roots are showing.

    Thank you for reading. :-)

  • Kirsten Savali

@ Kendrick: You don’t know me, so I’m assuming you’re unfamiliar with any of my previous articles; still, I state it clearly in the first sentence of this one: I am not a fan of President Obama — he is not a deity to me.

This has nothing to do with him nor his politics, this has to do with the recent attacks on the First Lady. If you would rather some symbolic drive through the hood so she can look at poverty, instead her pushing initiatives that benefit those living in poverty, then more power to you.

    Thank you for reading. :-)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_Y2NZAI2ZUO443SCMGTI6TISSUI kendrick

Of course, I don’t know you. However, you went off on Huffington based on your own assumption about what you thought she said or implied about Mrs. Obama. Oh, the irony.

And I found what Huffington said to be spot-on. The White House, the Obamas and their supporters do need to go to the hood where the poor, uneducated and unemployed are.

You telling me in a time where black unemployment numbers recently surged (even though the national average decreased, according to the Labor Dept.) and more people are on food stamps and other public assistance than ever before, it’s crass to suggest that the first black president and his wife reach out to the those struggling people who they helped rally into a voting frenzy in 2008 promising “change we can believe in”?

I’m not upset that Mrs. Obama is being attacked. To me, that goes with the territory of being in the position she’s in as the president’s husband. What person in a leadership position doesn’t get unfairly or fairly attacked?

I’m upset with some portions of the media and the population who care more about protecting and defending the Obamas than the poor, disenfranchised and those who suffer every day.

  • http://twitter.com/conect2u mOE

As a public figure and vocal supporter of democracy, Ms. Huffington could also shine a light on poverty throughout the country by visiting these areas and dedicate more segments on the HF Post to report the increasing challenges & plight of the poor in this country. How about exposing the programs, policies & infrastructure that continue to exploit the American worker and stifle social-economic advancement by pictorially showing their effect on peoples’ lives or suggest REAL remedies? Instead of criticising the First Lady on the initiatives she has chosen to champion, take up the gauntlet and fill the void, there is much to do for all who have the resources and time.

    props on the article :D

Oh do you

If you are so concern about the people in South Central L.A, take you crew of reporter down there and help find jobs for all those poor pity people that you say need the First Lady’s attention, she cannot do everything .
I just lost all of the RESPECT, that I ever had for you, the more things change the more they stay the same , Racist PIGS .

LOL. Where exactly did Ariana Huffington say that Michelle Obama wasn’t ‘black enough’? Here’s a woman who campaigned vigorously for President Obama, and as soon as she criticizes that the first lady can do much more or hasn’t done enough, she gets SLAMMED.

I’m not even a democrat, this article caught my eye because I couldn’t believe a staunch campaigner of Obama would even say something like that, and what do you know I was right.

Wake up you guys, the minute you have an honest conversation and its not something positive to say, they will jump on you.

This is junior high journalism, at best. I’m wondering where the reporter attended school. This article is embarassing, at best. I’m with Kendrick. How does Huffington saying that Mrs. Obama should visit “South Central” suggest that she’s implying the first lady isn’t black enough? What does race have to do with visiting places where people don’t have equal access to education, jobs and other things that many in this country take for granted? This piece doesn’t make any logical sense.

Why hasn’t President Obama “EVER” mentioned the word poor or poverty? I guess the middle class is poor to him so he feels justified. In 2008 I scratched my head after i heard his speech because he “NEVER EVER” said anything about the poor. Weird but I still support his efforts because the 1st term is spent trying to get re-elected and the 2nd term is spent making HISTORY.
