With the recent Shirley Sherrod controversy, many people have been calling the Obama administration “too white” with their hands off approach to the subject of racism.

While his cabinet does include Attorney General Eric Holder, U.N Envoy Susan Rice and Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, many say that all of them have a “too scared” approach to the disease that is racism in this country.

So in saying this, do you believe Obama needs more Blacks like Holder/Jarrett in his cabinet, an Al Sharpton type, or someone with a very, direct unafraid approach like Shirley Sherrod?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts on this subject.

Yes he do and why is that a problem…didn’t ALL the other President before him have ALOT MORE WHITE PEOPLE WORKING WITH THEM? That wasn’t a question then so why is it one now?(JMO)

Not really because if their were more BLACKS,they would be ineffective just as the PRESIDENT!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Johnny_Walker/ Johnny_Walker

Obama ‘needs’ to do whatever is necessary to break this country out of this financial quagmire. I wouldn’t care if his entire Administration was White; as long as they are working for the betterment of this country’s People, nothing else matters.

    @venitabrooks
Thank you for the laugh, but I think you’re trying to force too much stupid into one sentence.

@Johnny_Walker, Well Said. I totally agree. News one seems to be OBSESSED with racial biasness.

It’s obvious he needs people who can get results. To say that he is getting the best results from current members is questionable. I do know there are qualified black people who can help him in these trying conditions. I don’t feel as if every position has to be filled with an Ivy Leauge grad. In my opinion I think a black person will bring more to the position with the idea of helping out the first black president. Whether he likes it or not there is going to be scrutiny. For so long we have been considered inferior to whites, especially when it comes to intelligence. But if you check the history books of our HBCU’s, you will see some of the greatest Americans who have lived in this country. Also our HBCU’s have produced doctors, lawyers, business people etc.. who are more than qualified to serve in these positions.

It does not matter either way…it seems as though after ever republican leaves office a democrat has to repair all of their f-ups …but is always scrutinized by the public for not working fast enough… another example Bush Sr. and Clinton…he can have more people of color in his cabinet but the House and the Senate control mostly everything pretty much the checks and balances of our government…prime example unemployment extensions they damn near refused to pass it…people complain but do not vote how they should…claiming its controlled by the bilderbergs or the luminati…

Obama needs ppl, no matter what color, who are commited to making change happen in America. He needs ppl who have some backbone and will stand by his side and fight with him as works to move America in the direction he is trying to take the country as President.

Don’t need anymore of those who gone go with the program, so they dont rock the boat.

Don’t need anymore of those with the jaded or warped mentality that the way America has been is the way it needs to continue into the future.

I know they say with age comes maturity and wisdom, but also there comes deep seated feelings with issues from the past, that can inhibit your ability and judgment to do what’s right and fair. As the saying goes, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”. As the world is evolving, so must leadership and the styles in which it is implemented. The Obama adminstration needs “fresh blood” or a pair of “fresh eyes”..ppl with new ideas and real life perspectives on the situations of the folks govt is in place to help.

How can you expect someone who has never wanted much for anything to be able to empathize or sympathize, but so much, with the plight of the common man or single mother? Struggling to make ends meet, but who can’t get assistance or help because they have to work, even though the job is only paying slightly more than min. wage. Same as with a healthy person or a person with good health insurance benefits, they cannot truly know what it’s like to be sick and then stressed out on top of it because you can’t afford to go to the docs, get your meds or the treatment you need, without acc**ulating enormous debt, or being refused service at all.

It doesnt matter the color of the ppl. What matters is the heart and character of the person. Being fearless enough to stick their necks out to help the next person, who isn’t in the position to help themselves.

Most importantly, he need to do something for us like the jew, the gays, the white women, and everybody else, except the blacks. We need programs in the black community to teach blacks about running a business, Michelle could come up with something to help teach our kids to read, blacks hate reading. We need Economy Development in the black community so badly, we only keep 5c out of every dollar we make, the rest goes to the whites, and foreigners, Barack must make a move to show blacks he wants to see change in the black community, otherwise, he will not get my vote, ever again.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MFalcon/ MFalcon

You can’t really say “I want more Blacks in the Whitehouse” and say “we need to get rid of racism” in the same sentence. We need blacks supporting the whites who do well, and whites supporting blacks who do well. The bar is performance, and not skin color. Obama needs folks, all folks, that can help him get the job done.

We need people that will see the problem and aren’t be afraid to do what ever it takes to fix the problem, no matter what color they are. We need people with heart and determination, people who will stand by the presidents side and go to war with him on the issues that really matters, the ones that will get us out of the mess we are in now because of the last administration.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/B_Bordenave/ B_Bordenave

We need to quit blaming everyone else for what’s wrong in black America. We are Americans of African ancestry. The president can not fix all the problems even in two terms racism is in every fiber of our lives and I do not see that changing in my life time. We should focus on making changes in our neighborhoods encouraging our kids to get an education, demanding our schools do their jobs and our local politicians to represent our needs. President Obama should have the best qualified person for the job regardless of how they look. He has a tough job this country is a mess and will not get better in a very long time. We should look at what he has done in a short period of time

As a strong supporter and campaign volunteer,I feel very disappointed that there is just a handful of Black people appointed to significant cabinet and other positions and none in his inner circle(Valerie Jarrett, not withstanding). That is not to say that they should have picked any Black man or woman, but I am sure there are many educated Black people of intellect comparable to these of white appointees-perhaps even more capable, given that Black people have to try harder at everything. I also felt disappointed that he appointed an inordinate number of former Clinton Administration staffers. While I also supported President Clinton and think he did a lot to elevate the presence of Black people in the Federal Government, I expected more new faces, more diversity.

However, I do appreciate that President Obama cannot, could not-unless he wrestled power and became a dictator-appoint a slew of Black and Brown folks to a large number of critical positions. The “hidden forces” would have swung into action and removed him. He did the best he could and is doing the best he can under very, very trying circ**stances.

There are tremendous constraints on how much he can do. His election of itself is a remarkable occurrence, but it has not rid us of prejudice and discrimination. Let’s not harbor any illusions that injustice will not continue to be meted out to Black people. Right now, young Black man are still being targeted, arrested, abused and convicted. Employers still continue to favor brown and light-skinned people of any ethnicity over coffee, tar Black people for employment.

We still and must continue to support our civil rights organizations to carry on the fight for justice and freedom. “A luta continua.”

The truth is that he can do nothing, because he is just a figurehead. He doesn’t run the country. All the guys in his crew are all jews. Look at their last names. Jews run the country. His top advisor, a jew. His head money guy, a jew. The fam with the most money in the world, the Rothchilds, jews. They run the world, and their world view, and the religion they really pratice in private is totally about how to keep running the would. Others are just cattle to them. Obama is just a tool. And he wants to be used, because he believes that most Blacks are nothing but cattle. If he didn’t, he would not be where he is today. His loyality was tested long ago, and he sided with the powers that be.

Most American citizens–of all races— can’t name more than two members of the White House staff, don’t know the actual positions that are appointed by the President, can’t distinguish between the house and the senate, can’t name more than one Supreme Court Justice, etc…. That said, particularly given the sheer political illiteracy that exists in this country, I find it ironic that so many feel justified in criticizing President Obama (solely because he’s Black) for the makeup of a cabinet. If he is expected by some to go hard on the “race” issue, just because he’s Black, who specifically should be added to his cabinet? Please provide names and a rationale for those suggestions.

In the meantime, the truth of the matter is that the real pressure for social change has to come at the state level. More specifically, put pressure on your congressperson, state representative, etc….who actually represents you and your views at the federal level. Trust me, we DON’T want a president of any race swinging a broad political brush and dictating morality unilaterally on any issue…doing so is dangerous. In fact, consider what might happen when we get the next conservative in office. All of a sudden we’ll have a President who may think that it’s perfectly ok to have, for example, Pat Roberts or Rush Limboy on the cabinet.

Remember “Reganomics”? The Clinton years when we fell for that “I’m cool with the coloreds” gig while he privately sold America right from under our noses (i.e. NAFTA, deregulated banks, more severe consequences for powder vs. crack cocaine, etc..)? The years of Dad and son Bush…(i.e. wars, lies, loss of civil liberties, son Bush weighing in on the Uof Mich’s affirmative action in admission nightmare, illegal immigration, the secretly signed union between the US, Mexico, and Canada; the response to Katrina, etc…)?

The thing that will resolve America’s race issues have more to do with economics than anything. More specifically, bring industry back to the USA and give people a means via which to take care of themselves and families and we’ll see a huge shift in attitudes in general.

Trust me, President Obama is a highly educated and qualified man. He inherited “the” worst economic conditions in the history of the USA. He should be appointing anyone of any race who can help him resolve our serious economic problems. However, it’s not his job alone. Pressure needs to be placed on our local officials as well (mayors, governors, etc…). As well, many of us can run for office and make a difference (i.e. councils, school boards, etc..).

Information and political literacy……that should be our first goal. :)

@Johnny_Walker. I agree with you. The economy is of paramount concern and it really doesn’t matter what color the people he has around him. The problem here is a) many of the people who were the architects of this economic mess, are right there on the scene right now and b) BHO really has no effect on the economy anyway. If you notice, it’s the FED Reserve who dictates policy over the money supply and keeping the interest rates at 0% which ONLY benefits the banks among other things. This is an excerpt from the WORLD WEALTH REPORT put out by Merrill Lynch:

“The world’s population of high net worth individuals (HNWIs) grew 17.1% to 10.0 million in 2009.The world’s population of high net worth individuals (HNWIs) returned to 10 million in 2009, increasing by 17.1% over 2008. HNWI financial wealth increased 18.9% from 2008 levels to $39 trillion. After losing 24.0% in 2008, Ultra-HNWIs saw wealth rebound 21.5% in 2009. Ultra-HNWIs increased their wealth by 21.5% in 2009. In terms of the total Global HNWI population remains highly concentrated with the U.S, Japan and Germany accounting for 53.5% of the world’s HNWI population, down slightly from 2008.”

In short, during the worst economic crisis in the past 4 decades, the rich got incredibly richer. HOw is that? It’s the nature of the system, and as long as the structural components of this system remains in tact, you will always have this gross income gap between rich and poor, which has grown wider UNDER BHO. Wall Street reform bill only gave the FED more powers and less transparency.

    CONTINUITY WE CAN BELIEVE IN

President Obama is not a Black president. He is president of the United States of America. I think he has done an outstanding job in his assembly of a cabinet that better represents the United States of America. One of the reasons that racism continues to thrive in these united states is that we will not let it go. Unfortunately, we will never get 40 acres, a mule, or reparations of any kind. What we do have is the opportunity to improve upon the advacements of those that came before us. Dr. King, Brother Malcolm, WEB Dubois, Booker T Washington, Justice Marshall..the list goes on. The point is that it is up to us, the Black citizens, to make a mark in this country. We have ample examples to follow if we would just follow them.

I dont care if they are “black” or not.

African nations have “black” leaders that are corrupt as a motherf**ker

Long as they are competent, have integrity and do their job for the benefit of the PEOPLE’s well-being Im good.

You make sum interesting points _A_ amazing that Federal Reserve is a private company that practically runs this country. As for the president getting having more blacks in office it will never happen. The president doesn’t want to ruffle anymore white people feather’s so he will not change much. A majority of the black people back anything he does anyways.

Can’t have more blacks working with Obama…HE would have to lead by example….He seems to have a problem with that part….

But black doesn’t mean better or more qualified…Obama needs EFFECTIVE people no matter the race….
