People with not a lot of money, tend to not tip, it’s basic financial behavior. If some of those people, happen to be black, that shouldn’t make it a black stereotype, since not all blacks are poor- and surely there are a LOT more poor people of other races/ethnicities. I noticed that Hispanics/Latinos, don’t tip when there are the other poor people, serving them, either, however will tip if there is a white servant/server. I also see blacks, asians (indian), and latinos servers, having a hard time giving proper customer services, when they have to be polite to their own people, however, the minute they have to serve white people, they are on their best behavior and are all smiles. When I see these people, I don’t tip, and neither do other people who note this behavior towards us, by our own. They don’t tell you the menu of the day, they don’t go all out to check up with you that you don’t need something, when seated at a table, so if you don’t DO any of that (which technically IS YOUR JOB), who will feel the need to tip you? People are checking for customer service, and if you don’t provide it, to hell with you.

However, if a black/latino person is working in some white establishment, and they took care of me and my people, like they should, I ALWAYS tip, especially if I frequent the joint. I let them know I’m in support, and they normally hook you up with things from there out.

Until someone does a scientific survey of this topic, I wouldn’t put much credence in associating race/skin color with tipping. I think a scientific study might show that, in fact, tipping is a socio-economic class issue. Middle class people will likely be found to tip more consistently than wealthier and poorer people.

If you don’t tip at all, it should mean that the food/service were horrible, and in that case, just don’t go back to that particular restaurant.

If the service was good, then do the server a favor and help them right back. I don’t think there are too many servers who do it ‘for the love of the game.’

May I add that even Jamaicans seem to tip more consistently then black ppl from the U.S.

Everyone tips at least 20%. I was taught by friends and business associates to Always tip at least 20% always. It’s common courtesy. If you can’t afford to tip 20% don’t eat there

I AGREE WITH ODOGGZ ON THAT HOOK UP PART,,,cuz boy did i used to get some hook ups at Dennys,,LOL,,,it was yrs ago,,but we had just came from Hollywood where some guy gave me stickers,,LOL,,,1 said Su*k a D*ck(which i asked for) lol,,,the other said I LIKE UR SMILE,,we went to dennys after and our meal was about $25,,,i left the guy a $5 tip & the i like ur smile sticker,,LOL,,,and ever since then he would make sure we’d sit in his section and he would give us free dessert & sometimes hook us up with a coupon or our drinks free,,,so we always took care of him as well,,,he would always show me that he kept the sticker,,,sometimes u stick to where the service is good & if u form a friendship,,well HOOK UPs,,,lol,,,

one thing tho is,,,ive seen an experiment where they checked with ppl who leave tips and i seen that often ppl with very lil money were the bigger tippers,,and those with more,,left less tips. They asked some why they tipped so much, and they would say, cuz i know how it is. So who knows, guess its who u r, where ur from, where ur eating, and who is serving u.

If I order a pizza they always tell me 45mins before they can bring it out so I will order and then go pick it up. I do leave a tip when I go out and eat…however I will not tip anyone who acted as if my skin color is not good enough for them to smile at or ask do I need anything? I let them know upfront how I feel with them as my server and 9 out of 10 I would not eat there again. As for blacks being the only ones who don’t tip that is just another “stereotype” of the “black race”. Hell we are the only race that get the LIMELIGHT of EVERYTHING WRONG.(JMO)

I’m a server for over 10 years and blacks do tip but they as a rule tip less. So do mexicans . I’ll tell you why they just don’t get it or know any better. Why? They aren’t usually in the industry. If they are maybe a cook, dishwasher etc. but rarely servers. In 10 years many have come and gone but black servers do not last long. We don’t like to be told what to do, treated like trash, ordered about, etc. Being a server is extremely stressful. (People will yell at you for their bad day, a kitchen screw up, other people’s bad ass kids, -anything.) You are on a timed obligation to give good service, your job, your tip, your car payment depends on it. We want you to enjoy your meal, relax and get out! We need the table to “turn” so we can make more tips. Why the rush because in many states we make less than minimum wage. That’s right so the prices are low enough you’ll come into the resturant…. I’m making less than brother man at Mc Donalds. Unless you tip and tip decent (double and round up), -we end up paying for YOUR lack of tip. We still gotta tip everyone else based on the price of your meal … yep the bartender, the food runners, the hosts, even the bussers. So when you don’t tip or tip subpar its an F u. Its bad karma and best believe servers will remember and tell other servers… I had him and he tipped… ” . If you get bad service, tell the manager, don’t take it out on our kids, mortgage etc. Its most likely not our fault-believe me we’re trying to get the most tip we can from you. Another fyi.. The goverment assumes I got to take home 10 percent whether I get it or not. I get taxed on money I didn’t make when it’s less than 15% -cause remember the resturant mafia waiting for their share? So if its $20 leave $4, $35- 7…. etc. If you can’t afford it, stay home. Let me just say, watch the intro to reservoir dogs. There is very nice piece about tipping. I think if u watch that you will always be generous to your server. There is another movie called waiting, which is such a great example of why we should tip aswell. If it’s a Brazilian buffet where there is no service, just a cashier, I don’t tip. Not even with the large ‘karma’ jar on display – LOL!

As far as restaurants, salons etc I leave a 15% tip and if the service is EXCEPTIONAL than a LARGE tip (when we had a family dinner where we were catered to by 5 waiters we left a $200 tip).

As far as ‘Black’ folks not tipping, my experience is the opposite. In fact, some will tip when they SHOULDN’T. I once went out with a sista friend. The food was HORRENOUS (Italian spot in Santa Monica – WACK!). The service was despicable. And she wanted me to lend her $10 that she would pay me back for a $40 meal for this BS experience. I said hell no! It was the holidays, the food/service was horrendous, us paying the bill plus leaving a 25% tip, are you crazy???? She raided her pennies in her dashboard and APOLOGIZED to the waitress. I was like “Hell no – $2 is all you’re getting from me for this BS”.

That sista friend didn’t talk to me for a week because she didn’t like a white waitress thinking she was stingy…quite profound, really, when you think about it…

Bottom line..if you have never had a job or career where tipping is a major part of your income…sorry but you’ll never quite get it. I’ve worked in the customer service industry for over 10 years now and it is true..for whatever reason we as black people just do not show the same level of gratitude as our white counterparts. I consider myself a professional at what I do, and always make a conscious effort to provide excellent service to EVERYONE regardless of race. I treat my customers the same, and many cases cater to our brothers and sisters a lilttle more….still the results are the same. Tipping IS deeper than “Niggas just don’t tip”, I feel. For example, my parents never taught me that tipping is something you should do when you’re served. Mainly because it was something that wasn’t taught to them…I really feel that it simply is a jewel that has NOT been passed down in our families and communities over the years. Just think, before 1960 (the begining of the SIT-IN movement), we wouldn’t dream about sitting at a lunch counter and be “served” by a white man. We are now expected to economically and socially, make up a 400 year start in the country in a little more than 50 years..sorry not going to happen… I’m glad that articles like this one, bring much needed attention to an issue that alot of us are afraid to touch, and really be HONEST with ourselves about.

I work at a 4 star hotel in Chicago, and there is some truth to this, however the #1 ethnic group that doesn’t tip would be ASIANS, then Indians. Black people, especially those with money don’t tip, like Kanye, Cam’ron, John Legend, just to name a few. But they will come to the hotel with tons of bags to carry, and requests to be filled, but won’t give the doorman or bellman a lousy dollar.Oh, I can’t leave out Tyrese, he is the worst. To those folks who don’t have a lot of money and don’t tip, DON’T STAY AT A 4 OR 5 STAR PROPERTY!, go to the red roof inn or something if you are going to be cheap. Tipping is not a racial issue. I tip. If you do not tip when appropriate then you are cheap. That is all.

For those who are un aware, servers generally make between $2.30 – $4.50 an hour. Therefore, the majority fo their salary coms from TIPS. If you go to a restaurant that includes a server, the customary tip is 20%. My wife and I start off with this amount in mind from the door, and the percentage goes down from there based on the overall service. Like one of the comments mentioned earlier, one should be nicer to the people handling your food. If you go out to eat *especially at an expensive restaurant) have enough for a proper tip, or don’t go. To drop your server a buck or two on a $50 dollar check is just wrong. As they say, ignorance is no excuse. Which, by the way, is the actual definition of being a n****r.

In general, if there is truth overall that blacks do not tip; people need to keep in mind that we are not as economically powerful as others. In other words, we have less money overall. I’m not saying it’s an excuse but it is something to keep in mind. I tip most of the time even if I only have a dollar to give, something is better than nothing.

I do not tip. What am I tipping for, because someone bought my food to me? Call me up to the counter when my food is ready and I can get my own plate! The food service industry needs to change. Give those people more money then it won’t be a big controversy about tipping. If I tip a waiter/waitress, what about the other people that do a service also? (mail carrier, newspaper delivery, UPS, etc). I do not go to restaurants that add a tip in automatcially, it’s not right.

I work as a Server in a more high-end Italain restaurant. In addition to this, I’m a chef that runs my own baking/catering businesses, which both provide services to others. It’s an awful shame how we continue to think that we as Black folk feel that others owe us something, including our own equals. Am I to blame for us not receiving the must deserved reperations of our Ancestors? I go above and beyond my call of duty to satisfy my customers. The prices that are set are done by the business that I work for and what it cost me to run my own personal business. People, as a Server I only make an hourly rate of a little over $4! The tips that I receive compensates my low-end salary. I hear people say that maybe a person is financialy incapable of offering a generous and/or fare tip. Well, to them I ask why not be more economical and plan a more cost effective meal, like fast food or dining at home? The services that are provided should be automatically considered and bugeted for BEFORE demanding it. Also, this unjust ignorant treatment doesn’t just come from Blacks, but all races. However, I’ve experienced moreso with my own Black people. I’ll do all that’s required of me and more, but it still happens. Even when I may err as a human and rectify my mistake(s), IT STILL HAPPENS! Have we not considered what a person goes through to provide us with these services? It’s high time that we educate ourselves to proper etiquette and act accordingly. As my Grandmother has always told me: “Give and it will be given back unto you. God loves a cheerful giver”.

I always tip 15% standard . 20% if the food and service was outstanding. i even tip the delivery guys 15%…………DO NOT piss off anyone that is handling your food,you will regret it.

I worked as a waiter for many years and we were paid an hourly wage of $2.13 and tips. The sad part that people don’t realize is that at most restaurants, the waiters have to tip out at least 3% to the restaurant for the host and bartender, meaning if the bill is $10.00, the waiter has to give the restaurant $0.30, so if there is not a tip left then the waiter is in the hole. I am African American and it is true that African American’s should not be stereotyped that they do not tip because its happens in every race. It is true that a good amount of African Americans that do come into restaurants don’t tip or tip poorly. The reason that the topic is even an issue is because it has to be true to a certain extent. But its a matter of up-bringing and values that is passed down from families. Even before I was a waiter I was always taught the simple principle of giving,even going Biblically, “Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that you mete with it shall be measured to you again” Luke 6:38. I also want to point something out that a majority of my African American customers were the ones I had to almost become a “slave ” to because they wanted everything at every minute and can’t tend to other guest meaning, if you know that you are a needy customer then the waiter deserves something. Also on a larger scale people also have to be aware that the waiter does not cook the food so if the food comes out a little late then bad to penalize the waiter because its a busy night and the kitchen staff is a little backed up. I personally believe in giving for great customer service. I tip my barber as well :)

before i worked in a bar i never tipped, but once i saw what servers and anyone in that industry makes i started to tip. most servers don’t make minimum wage they are roughly at $3-5 an hour
here in cleveland. i am not going to say i am a huge tipper but i make sure that i leave them atleast a $5 tip depending on service.

First off tired of people of colored calling themselves Black (look up the word Black) secondly I only tip for above average service . Every food service wrker does not deserve a tip . Since the tipping is that serious to who ever seeks out and finds that kind of gig know what your getting as a job . Some will most won’t .

Some of you are simply crazy. Don’t complain about a server’s rate of pay being 2.50-4.50 an hour; get another job. Your issue is not with the patrons but with your owner/manager/supervisor. Somehow, these restauranteers have managed to skirt the minimum wage requirement and shifted this responsibility to the customers.

A $50 plate of “mini-salmon” at the Atlanta Fish Market is much less satisfying than the same entree at Applebees for $15; and I’m expected to leave a lavish tip based on the size of the check?! GTFOH!

So what exactly is the purpose of patronizing these outrageously priced establishments, except for gaining the opportunity to brag to your friends about your latest laughable outlay of cash? But then again, you also get the satisfaction of knowing that you helped pay for some guys Porsche and send his kids to Yale. Kudos…

I don’t think anyone ‘should’ have to tip for anything! IF you wish to leave a tip, that’s at your discretion, but it should not be mandatory. If that were the case, I don’t think many businesses would stay open for long.

Just when did we get to the point in western society where a tip is ‘expected’. Here’s the thing, if you work a job where you depend on tips, then you may as well become a pan handler or something. We pay for a product or a service; anything beyond that is not seen as marketable. I don’t care if the job as a waiter, bartender, hostess, etc. doesn’t pay minimum wage; FIND A BETTER-PAYING JOB!

I tended bar (not ‘bartended’) for almost 9 years in 3 different countries. Many people tipped and some didn’t. I decided to become a bartender for the creativity, autonomy, and of course, to get laid. Many women love bartenders for whatever reason :) I could mix drinks for a table of 20 or a table of 2 and it never made a difference to me if I received a $10 tip or a 25-cent tip.

As I tell ‘BS’ (beer & soda) bartenders who get pissed because I didn’t tip after two beers, “Did you brew the beer? No! Did you bottle the beer? No! So, all you did was bend over to retrieve a beer for me and after only two beers (one of which I had to wait until you were done flirting with some guy (or gal) at the end of the bar or when you were done text messaging) at a total cost (like it matters) of $6, you want (read: expect) a tip?”

Come on, get over that crap! Hey, perform this experiment. When the check comes, ask the server or bartender what do they want for a tip. Nine times out of 10, they will respond, “I don’t know; whatever you think is best.” So, some of the tip-hungry fools out there expect a tip, but don’t know how much they’re worth. Oh, then there is the tip that is predicated on the amount of the bill. So, I order a bottle of wine that costs $2o0 and I should give you 20% of that bill… for a single bottle of wine??? I should give you $40 for bringing me a bottle of wine… from the bar? Really???

I tend to over-tip when I tip. I tend to leave upwards of 40+ percent of the bill. And if you’re wondering, yes, I’ve endured such poor service that I didn’t leave a tip and made sure the server knew it while I was there. I even argued (well, a harsh debate is more like it) over not leaving a tip. If the service is ‘average’ (meaning, you are doing your job), then why should I leave a tip. If you believe I should pay you (and the restaurant should pay you) for taking my order and bringing my food, then you’re crazy. If anything, we should be tipping the cook! Now, if you are cordial, attend to my needs, ensure my glass (or whatever) is topped off, and check up on me frequently, then I can assure you that I’ll tip well, because you went beyond your call of duty. Yes, there is a difference and race, ethnicity, height, weight, or gender doesn’t matter. Your salary is payment for you to DO YOUR JOB. I’ll chip in IF you do more than your job.

Again, it doesn’t matter what the state of the economy is. It doesn’t matter what the race of the customer is (like race should really factor in a tip at all). it doesn’t matter if I’m having a good day or an excellent day. Your health and welfare should hinge upon whether or not I tip you. For once, perform a service just because you like doing it! If you feel that your labor isn’t returning enough compensation, then become a teacher, police officer (the good ones), or even a librarian (who perform an extremely valuable service that is worthy of tips, gratitude, and praise) and see what your tip is at the end of the day.

People of ANY race, creed, or origin. If you ever get a receipt like that with profanity, racism, or anything else that is legally-sanctioned offensive, DON’T go a beat-down spree. Instead take a huge chunk of the merchant’s capital. I would stir up so much racial controversy over this that Dominoes Pizza would settle out of court just to get me to ease up on the negative press! Welcome to Capitalism baby!

To me personally, the whole industry is screwed up. If your desperate enough to take $2.00/hr work wages from an employer AND still have to pay them percentages of that on top then it’s good bet you need a career change. Don’t get mad at the customer! Lord knows you DEFINITELY won’t receive a tip then! Go to your boss and say “Hey, $2.00 just isn’t cutting it for me.” If they value your services, your pay rate will go up. If not, which is most likely the case, they’ll tell you that’s average/going/standard rate for your position. At this point the choice is simple, get a better job. And this goes for all races, even more so for “Golden Roaders” who are doing it because there favorite actor did it, in a movie. Gotta eat my cereal, must tip kellogg’s more cash because I enjoyed it. Stupid.

mmhhh I think black people don’t tip because we feel like, that’s what they are getting paid for. Why should I tip you for doing your job? We have to pay for the meal, pay taxes, and now we have to pay for somebody to bring it to us. Well give me the option to go back and get it myself.

Don’t get me wrong I am not the type of person who does not tip. But I have had some horrible waiters and some great waiters. I tip depending on the service I recieved and yes sometimes depending on what i have in my pocket that day. But how dare you tell me how much I am supposed to give someone and then look at me sideways when I don’t give it to them because they did a crappy job.

Bottom line is we need to work on getting their pay raised. It’s not right for them to make what they make. It should be illegal to pay someone those kind of wages and then expect for us to make up the difference. With all the stuff we have to pay for already it’s really crazy. Taxes from our checks, taxes on everything we buy, now I have to pay somebodies wages. What part of that sounds right to you?
AND they also have to pay taxes on their tips. That’s not right either.

Let’s do something to change that, instead of throwing shots at people who know better. And guess what if I just have enough money for pizza and I wanna order pizza for the kids…the driver is just out of luck. What gives you the right to critisize me for it. Times are hard for alot of people. But that doesn’t mean we have to stay in the house and not go out and try to enjoy ourselves. Let’s be a part of the solution and not the problem….

1. To make a statement like, “Black people don’t tip” is a stupid generalization of a group.

2. A tip is just that, a tip. So if you recieve a quarter, be happy. They didn’t have to give
a dime. (this coming from an ex server/bust boy who was greatful for the quarters)

3. A server works for a company and has a boss like most of us. When we are not making
enough we can’t get mad and demand money from the people we help on our jobs.
We work hard and hope for a raise. If we get no raise, we find better.

Neither do white people tip, I mean they do not tip Black people. I know plenty of Black service people who tell me and whom I’ve observed not getting tip and if so, a paltry sum, from white people. As such, I then will “overtip” the black service person to make up the tip that the previous white custiomer did not give then in addition to mine.

Personally, I think it’s foolish for anyone not to tip IF they plan on going back to that establishment to dine or whatever. People remember that and may decide to add a “little extra” to your meal.

I feel the same way as a few people here…if you don’t want to tip, then go to the grocery store and cook or hit up a carry out instead of receiving a service that is provided to you at a restaurant. It is a normal practice in quite a few restaurants that servers and bartenders make only $2.oo-something/hour + tips and their livelihoods are the tips because once the taxes are taken out, you have a voided paycheck. I like how some say “find another job” if servers are going to complain about black folks not tipping. Well, how about you go somewhere where it’s not customary to tip because it’s not like y’all didn’t know when you walked up into the restaurant that you’re supposed to tip. Gimme a break, lol. Some folks genuinely do not know how much a server makes and I make sure that my friends, my friend’s friends, my family and freinds of my family and EVERYBODY knows how much servers truly make. I worked in a restaurant for nine years as a server, a bartender and as an assistant manager and I was the ONLY black person that worked at that restaurant for years and then I recruited my boy(and then there was two, lol) and we would ALWAYS hear about how “our people” don’t tip well from the other servers (which were white) and the sad thing is that, IT IS TRUE! I hate to say it…then again, no I don’t…WE, black people, are the most picky, demanding, changing our minds, complaining @ss people in restaurants (again, I have 9 years of experience with this) and then leave the absolute worse tips after you’ve had a server going back and forth for extra this and extra that the entire time that you’re there. It was extremely rare if you didn’t go running back and forth for a black table or hear a complaint about…something. I DO hate to say this, but that is the reason why when my fairer-skinned co-workers (caucasians) even LOOKED like they didn’t want to wait on a black table, I always picked it up because I hate for us to look bad even though I already knew that I wasn’t going to be all that happy by the time that they left either. This is also why the servers probably have an attitude or look like they don’t want to wait on you…because they really don’t, because they think that it’s going to be a waste of their time and energy. I leave 15% regardless of wherever I go (unless it’s truly poor service) and if it’s a black server, I’m leaving 20%+ because I don’t want for them to feel like how I used to feel whenever I had a black table…that I will be working hard to please someone for darn near nothing. It’s really not that hard to shell out a few extra dollars for the meal AND service and if it is, then you shouldn’t be there in the first place.

Anyway, I stand by my comment that I posted on the original topic, that a good portion of blacks don’t tip. I remember when I worked for tips, one of the most sucessful black politicians in New Orleans came into where I worked, he didn’t tip ANYTHING to the girl that helped him.

I’m not going to be the one to say if you can’t afford it to don’t go there, because it’s not my place. I just feel that it’s in good custom to tip. Not saying people who don’t tip are bad people or the sc** of the earth. My best friend since 7 years old is the perfect example. She orders pizza, yet has never tipped a driver. Goes to the nail shop every 2 weeks, but never tips the one who does her nails. If she goes to a restaurant, the most she’ll tip the waiter is $1. I love my friend to death and would do anything for her, but a spade is a spade; a bad tipper.

The other group who doesn’t tip is senior citizens. My grandmother grw up in a time where $0.50 was a great tip. When I saw someone over the age of 70, I said to myself there is going to be no good tip with this one. It didn’t mean I treated them worse, I just knew what to expect from experience.

If you don’t want to tip, don’t. Stay at home and serve yourself. There’s the food and then the question is how is that food being served? That’s what you’re tipping. Any restraurant worth their salt will have servers that will serve your meal worthy of a tip. Poor service is a reflection of the management if lousy service is the norm. In that case go to another establishment that will respect you and your business, but quit with the “I don’t tip” attitude. It really speaks of defensiveness not just about being served or how you’re being served but how you see yourself. If you go to a restraurant and you don’t serve yourself, a “contract ” is formed between patron and server. If you don’t want to accept the conditions of the “contract”, go to Mickey D’s, where the folks have the same attitude you have.

Thank you Sirena5,!!!! The bottom line is some people are ignorant and have no class! If you don’t think that you should have to tip then don’t be upset when you get bad service. As some of you have put it . “you get what you paid for”. ” For those whose says et a career change then how would you eat if there were not waiters? You would go and get your own food and drink and that what you should do if you feel that tipping is breaking your pockets and putting you into BANKRUPT!!!! The person who entered the comment on the Domino’s receipt rightfully deserved to be fired for exhibiting ignorance and bigotry (these seem to go hand-in-hand), a lack of moral character, poor decision-making, and sheer stupidity. The customer didn’t deserve such crass and offensive treatment, and the company certainly doesn’t need an employee who alienates customers in such a base fashion. However, this incident is but one example among millions which demonstrate that racial stereotyping, prejudice, and maltreatment are, sad to say, alive and quite well… and present in every facet of our culture.

While internalized racism could certainly play a role in a person’s decision to forgo tipping, human behavior is far too complex to ever assume a singular causality. To be certain, there will be other contributing and exacerbating factors, including a tight economic situation as mentioned by another commenter, but this factor can affect any individual, regardless of race. (Furthermore, if you are so broke that you can’t afford a tip, why are you even going out to a restaurant where tipping is expected?!? Answering this question would require a separate analysis.)

A more likely correlated culprit might be the generally poor service rendered to customers of color: longer waits to be seated or to have orders taken, fewer server visits to the table to inquire if the meal is acceptable or if additional items are needed or desired, and an overall negative interaction style on the part of the server. In such situations, poor service = poor (or no) tip.

I tip 15%-20% for good to excellent service, and on occasion will tip 25% or more for exceptional service (and I usually inform a manager when this is the case), but I rarely tip under %10 even if the service is exceptionally poor. Part of the reason for this is my familiarity with the food service industry and the sub-minimum wages often paid to waitstaff. It’s not an easy job, and it often pays very poorly… unless you are getting decent tips. And some places combine all the tips together and give each waitstaff member an equal portion, which only serves to punish good waitstaff and reward bad waitstaff.

Therefore, additional factors involved in a decision to tip, or not tip, or tip well or tip poorly, might involve the extent to which a customer: 1) understands the server’s job responsibilities and overall pay structure, and 2) recognizes value in and/or appreciates good service.

Some people feel entitled to service, others lack empathy. In worst-case scenarios, both elements are present. In all instances, past experiences play a very large role in our future reactions and behaviors, leading to habitual responses, including a habit of not tipping.

To those who believe everyone is tip everyone, other than the hardship stories, please tell me why we should tip?

I completely understand how some people (not whole groups like whites, blacks, seniors, etc.) don’t tip regardless of how well the service was. This is not a good thing. However, it is still their choice to refuse to tip and subsequent service should not falter because of it. I’ve purposely refused to tip just to see how the server would take it. Then the next time I come in (making sure they remember me), if the service is of the same high quality, then I over-tip.

But what do we do about those who get ‘conditioned’ to a certain level of tips. Some hot women are used to guys tipping them insane amounts. So, when a group comes in and tips them nominally (or otherwise appropriately like 15 – 20%), they get upset. Where does this behavior stop?

Again, if you have to run from table to table to take orders, deliver (serve) food, drive food to someone’s home, etc. well that is your job!! Why must you ‘expect’ a tip for doing what you were hired to do? Should polices officers get a tip for keeping you safe? Should teachers and professors (yes, I am one) receive tips for imparting important knowledge to you? Really?

Again, I’ll tip if you go beyond the call of duty, but it shouldn’t be expected that I tip ‘just because’.

As for suggesting that someone visit a grocery store or fast food so they don’t have to tip if ludicrous because you’d be causing more of an economic headache for the server. If no one frequents that restaurant or bar, then a lack of tips won’t be the problem; the lack of employment will.

If YOU feel that your server did a great job (a ‘good’ job is deserving of a salary, while a poor job deserved termination), then I advocate tipping. But your salary and personal hardships should not be the customer’s problem. Tipping accordingly IF you must, but don’t tip just because. There is something to be said about the notion of operant conditioning. A tip is sort of like a reward for doing well, while a small tip or no tip is punishment for doing the minimum or poorly.

As a former server you should know more than anyone that if a person can’t afford a decent tip with regular service, then they should stay home. I am doubting you are a former service person or you would know that the government taxes servers based on dollar volume of food sold. Even the government expects servers to be tipped. That is the reason people are servers, for the tips. It’s like a sales person who works on commission, they are in it to hopefully make more money than the average Joe in less time.

If a person eats a $100 in food, the Gov’t then assumes you got tipped and they tax at (last I knew) 8% of the check. So after a week, you have to claim tips on all the food you sold. Guess what, if it is less than what you sold, you actually end up owing more than ou made.

Your example that it might be your last dollar. Hey if it is your last dollar, then you certainly shouldn’t be wasting it eating out in a restaurant and you have larger problems.

PEOPLE, tip or stay home.

I promise you would understand if you waited tables and see just how much crap you go through for one single customer!!!! It isn’t as easy as it looks when you have greedy and needy customers who wants to complain and nit pick the whole time!

Why are some of you dumbasses comparing tipping waiters/bartenders vs mailmen, delivery personnel, or other jobs etc? Restaurant workers make $2.13 an hour! Thats why tipping is required; they are peforming a service and do not earn a livable salary for doing so.

Bottom line: you either tip or dont use the service. Keep your cheap assses at home and stop ruining the reputation for the rest of us that DO tip.

I once took a job as a c**ktail waitress in a local area nightclub. The hourly wage was approximately $4.55 (above area standards at that time) plus tips. And of course, the hourly wage was taxed and all tips required allocation at shift’s end. The establishment was a ‘baller’ magnet, so the tips were always good. What frustrated me most, however, was the expectation of tip sharing. A bartender would provide each waitress with a ‘bank’ before doors opened and expected a portion of our earnings for providing the customers’ drinks. If they felt a waitress were not being honest with her share, they would subsequently deny her a bank. Needless to say, I built a repoir with the owner and would obtain my bank from him.

As for the tipping debate, well, restaurants are always more of an issue. From my personal perspective, people are much more sensitive over food, eating and dining experiences when compared to mixed drinks and evening music entertainment. Plus, the base wage and earning amount increases with lounges/nightclubs while the instance of customer dissastisfaction decreases. Ethnicity, gender and socioeconomics aside, a drinking customer is much more likely to tip and to tip well. ;D

I guess some people simply don’t have anything else better to do than to write that mess on receipts and read these types of articles. I make it a point to tip nicely so to saddle me with this ignorance is horrible. I wouldn’t have been so offended if this article had read, “Some Black People Don’t Tip”. Its funny because just last night a white family of five sitting next to my table stiffed the waiter after he obviously catered to them. Too funny, my black kids feeling sorry for him even gave him a portion of their allowance on top of my generous tip even when it was not deserved. My daughter being the sweet soul she is even struck up a conversation with Omar, and they shook hands before we left. Go figure but some black people do tip so speak for yourself.

Servers who feel entitled to tips based solely on the fact that they served a patron good or bad are out of their freaking minds!!! A tip is a GRATUITY a show of gratitude for a job well done. If the job is not done well, why on earth should that server be rewarded? Servers are not on commission. Servers receive a paycheck for their hours worked (wages). Give good service because you are a competent server not for tips.

If you’ve ever grown up and seen police officers, firemen, teaches or professors get tipped, then yes, YOU should tip them, but I’m fairly certain that you know what is customary at a restaurant, so give me a break on the outlandish scenario. Yes, it is in a server’s job description to” run” around to please the guests/customers, but we are talking about black people and tipping and yes, I am saying that my black people are more demanding in having servers running here, there and everywhere to take care of them and still never seem satisfied and u still receive much less…if anything at all, but you’ve done more work for them. If you choose not to tip then so be it, and of course you will be remembered and I’m sure that servers and bartenders have fought to take care of you where you couldn’t see them once you sat down after not tipping them that first time. ;) You’ve just helped perpetuate/validate the article to some degree if that server never sees you again since the restaurant industry has such a high turnover rate . It sucks that we’re perceived that way, but unfortunately, there is too much truth to it. And if they go to the grocery store because they don’t want to tip, it wouldn’t create an economic headache…it would mean a higher turnover of more customers that tip.

From a lot of the posts it seems like some BP DON’T see the significance in tipping and I should prob add myself to that list. I always tip at restaurants b/c I know how little the waiter is being paid and I feel trifling letting someone bring me my food, refill my drink, and take my food back if necessary. I don’t trip if they get the order wrong or forget to bring something b/c waiters ARE human, however I have ZERO tolerance for nasty attitudes or being blatantly ignored. That type of behavior guarantees you NO tip and I’m telling the manager.

BUT… I do NOT always tip at the hairdresser, nail salon or for food deliveries(which isn’t often). I don’t know why I view these folks separate from waiters but I do. Don’t get me wrong most times I WILL tip for these services but there have been occasions where I didn’t. And the few times that I didn’t tip I didn’t feel bad. I would feel terrible if I didn’t tip a waiter but I wouldn’t see major harm in not tipping the nail lady. I don’t think it’s b/c I don’t have class I know it’s because I’M CHEAP/FRUGAL/THRIFTY! Everywhere I look there’s a darn tip jar.

Prime example, I PAID for a ticket on a chartered bus for a day trip. When we got back on the bus one of the guys got on the speaker and asked for tips for the bus driver and then proceeded to pass his hat to the back of the bus. I was pissed in my head b/c I’m like “Didn’t we pay for our tickets?” But after I saw EVERYONE else add to the hat I went ahead and put some money in. And every person on the bus was black AND they gave really good tips.

So basically tip if you feel the need to, or do like I do… tip whenever you don’t want to feel trifling.

Another thing, this is why most restaurants are starting to AUTOMATICALLY include gratituty into the check. Because people aren’t tipping. AND THIS GOES FOR EVERYONE, not just blacks. But this can be good and bad. Good because the waitress is guaranteed a tip, but bad because their level of service could be lowered. I went to a restaurant where the tip was added into the check off top and the waitress was a complete b*tch. We demanded the manager take the tip from our check, because we refused to tip her. BUT, the runner, who assisted us more than our waitress, got the tip instead.

It’s crazy to me how people expect to have their drinks refilled, be seated quickly if their is a long wait, have their food brought out faster than Reggie Bush’s run, have their waitress at their wim for whatver is needed, get their check before other tables, get their pizza delivered in under 30 minutes hotter than hell fire. YET, these people feel they shouldn’t tip. People don’t seem to understand that servers, drivers, etc REMEMBER YOU. If they know you don’t tip, you will be last for everything. Your food will be warm not hot, you will be the last house that pizza is delivered to, you will be limited on trips to your table, your coffee won’t be made as well.

People can turn a blind eye, but when blacks are at a restaurant, the wait staff are assuming they won’t get tipped well, it’s fact. I thought the same thing when I worked for tips, and I’m black.

This is BS! Why in hell should we tip people for doing THEIR JOBS? Does anyone hand me a tip for waking up every morning and going to work? Does anyone hand me a tip for taking care of my kids? Those people CHOSE to walk around all day serving customers/clients, we didn’t make them. Therefore they are doing what they are supposed to do and shouldn’t be forcibly making people OVER pay them to do so. If tips mean that much to workers in the food industry then they need to hit those supervisors/owners up for more pay.

First and foremost, I tip. I tip for service period. I tend to tip better if the service is up and beyond. For bad service, I will tip but not the customary 15%. I will leave a dollar or two and ask for the manager and explain why the tip is less than accordingly. I do not think it is blacks do not tip. I believe it is an issue of class. This includes ones socioeconomic profile. You have people with no class that demands service and will not tip a dime and then you have low class individuals that do not get out that much and just do not understand. I like great service. When I go out for a bite, night on the town, valet, getting a massage or for a few c**ktails, I like for the people who serve me to not only know me but get excited and want to do everything for me. I am labeled a “George” in the tipping industry. Everywhere I go, I tip and it pays off. I love the perks and you will get more on the back end. I can assure you this, take me and a person that an establishment does not know on a Friday night in a popular restaurant. Guess who will get in quicker with a better seat. For the ignorant blacks that just do not tip, you guys deserve crappy service. If you can not afford to tip for serviced rendered, you can not afford the experience so therefore you do not need to be there. Go to the nearest dollar menu and keep buying the knockoffs. With that being said, I have come across that waiter or staff that assumes that because I am black, I do not tip. Believe me, the numbers are very low but it does happen. If a you feel you are not receiving great service, simply ask for another staff member. Do you really want someone to do something to your food or drinks?

Our attitude toward tipping is pretty much the same as our attitude toward donating time and money to local schools, HBCU’s, and to anything that would help out our neighborhoods. God forbid we pick up a piece of trash that is not in our yard. And it’s that same mentality as to why we don’t tip. Of course this doesn’t apply to ever single person, but the majority rules.

I can’t believe how many people are justifying why they don’t tip. If you do not feel the need to tip then get take out. Your tip is based on the service you receive. If it is good you tip well…if not, then you don’t tip well. That’s how its always been. You are no better than the person waiting tables. I have never been a waitress and even I know that. Some of the comments on here justifying weak tipping are just plain ignorant and unenlightened. If you are too cheap or selfish to tip, stay home or eat at fast food restaurants where tipping is not expected. Non-tippers don’t belong at sit down restaurants. Adequate (15-20%) tipping is a de facto reasonable expectation at sit down restaurants. That is the social contract we in the United States operate under. If you don’t like that, don’t go to sit down restaurants.
I am embarrassed by ignorant or uncultured Black people who perpetuate negative stereotypes about my race without regard to how they are affecting the entire race. I try to do my best not to perpetuate these stereotypes, but there are other Blacks working overtime to perpetuate them. What ignorance!

Okay I see people on here saying if you “DON”T TIP, STAY HOME” – I tip 10% all the time, but I wish I would get a Waitress or Waiter tell me that. I would go off on your Broke ass. Let me tell you something – First off, it’s not my job to guarantee you get paid 7.75 Hr. The price is listed for dinner, lunch, whatever and that’s the only price I’m required to pay, so if I tip it’s because I wanna give because I know you are probably having a hard time in this rough economy. I’m SBM37 and I’ve always tipped what I FEEL, I typically tip 15-20% but if I don’t have it, I DON’T have it, so suck it up. I know service people work on tips and thus I tip but I’m not going to kill myself or my pocket to tip. If you do a good job and add to my dining experience then you will definitely get 20% but if it was not enjoyable I will do what I can and if I make the 15% mark then I do.

People servers make 2.13 cents per hour and if restaurants had to pay them 8 dollars a hour then most people would stay home because the price of everything would go up $ 6.00 on the menu. I understand alot of people believe it or not don’t understand how to tip and alot of us are just $ 5.00 dollar tippers in the state i live in and what i find funny is people who want the most when they dine out (none tippers) tip the least and people who want the least tip the most. now if all servers could go to the lobby and pick there tables to wait on most of us would never get any services it may not be right but it’s the truth. i believe you have to earn your tip but for me i don’t require alot, check on me 1 time and i’m going to tip 20% because i understand but those who want your to work like a sservent and not a server is normally looking for a reason not to tip and alot of them people are us black people and thats why people don’t want to deal with us, because we are very demanding and we want the best but alot of us don’t want to pay for it!! servers see alot of black people as alot of work and complaining for a couple of dollars and thats why we get that label!!! I’m more offended by the racial epithet than I am about the concept if I choose to give a gratuity ( a ‘voluntary’ ‘extra’ payment) or not. To tip is not statutory so it’s to the discretion of the person who’s paying. If anything the employer should pay the employee more money (cause the restaurateur is definitely not hurting) if it’s a matter of the waiter being able to pay their bills or not, why should I be held liable for their compensation range? I just wanted a burger.

Also, what is a tip these days? 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%?? It’s been climbing over time and who sets what is satisfactory today (or tomorrow)? Conceptually you can be offending someone with your 10-15% tip thinking you’re doing something nice for them.

So, in short I say pay your bill for goods consumed and give a tip in whatever denomination you feel is adequate. More importantly, PAY YOUR TITHES! We can pay taxes and tips but still putting a dollar in the plate.

Get it together.

Sorry, but I simply cannot afford to tip at this time. The people working in the service industry obviously don’t make enough money either. The question should not be why do black people not tip, buy the bigger question is why is it legal for these restaurants to pay such low wages. As a customer I am already paying for expenses such as wages, utilities, etc.

In case you didn’t know, its hard out there in this economy. Not only are you dealing with a 15% unemployment rate, our community is dealing with UNDEREMPLOYMENT as well. It is a well doc**ented fact that Blacks simply do not make as much money as their white counterparts. Now for the Blacks that are doing well, yes please tip. Tipping is the courteous, not mandatory, thing to do. ALSO I work in the service industry as well, and have seen plenty of white people not tip also.

It should be illegal for any company to pay their employees $2.15 per hour. Instead of getting angry with these corporate criminals who rob us every day, we get angry at each other. If a company can’t pay at least minimum wage, maybe we all should consider not patronizing their businesses.

Again, if waiting tables and going through crap and dealing with nit-picking customers is so much of a bother, then why do it??? I’ve quit a job before because, though the pay was good, having to deal with a certain type of customer (elitist who literally treat you like a 2nd class citizen) was not worth it. Sure, I was out of work for a couple of months (and regretted resigning when the income was absent for that time), but it boils down to one’s cost-to-benefit analysis.

When we say, “If you don’t like it, find another job,” it’s not that we’re saying, “Hey, it sucks to be you!” We’re saying that you should not put up with something if you dislike it so much or expect more from the job than is guaranteed, such as the paycheck. If you come to depend upon the generosity of customers for your income, then homeless beggars should millionaires somehow. If you think that waiting tables is tough, then try standing at off-ramps begging for change and being ignored, sneered at, cussed at, and even assaulted! So, why not ‘tip’ them as well. Of course, they’re not providing a service, but who do we define ‘service’. What if they were to tell give you relevant traffic information. Yeah, it’s far-fetched, but still drives home the point of ‘expected compensation’ for having done nothing but your job.

No one should ‘have’ to tip anyone for just doing their job. If you go out of your way to offer a senior citizen your seat on the bus, should that senior citizen be made to compensate you? I hope not, because it is your job as a good person who complies with the established social contract. The same goes for the server; he or she sought out and accepted the position as a server and should not ‘expect’ tips.

I’m not advocating that no one tip anyone! I’m merely saying that a tip should not be mandatory; they should not ‘expect’ it. Seems the argument that you and others pose is only the hardship argument. That’s not a bad argument, but it’s just not a strong argument. I tip when I believe the service is better than what should be the norm. I’ve tipped (and tipped well) 8 of 10 places I’ve eaten or socialized at. However, I tipped because of the high quality service, not because the server or bartender has to go through crap as part of their job. I’ve tended bar for almost 9 years, so I surely know how some customers can be (drunk, cheap, belligerent, racist, elitist, etc.). Still, it was part of my job to serve them.

Gratuity should not be mandatory. I believe some servers work very hard and absorb far more than their share of a*****es at work. IF they perform very well, then tipping is great. But I just don’t believe in tipping just because the server is a server. Again, if that is the case, look at what other occupations have to put up with in their daily functions: police, teachers, hotel clerks, maids, housekeeping personnel (those poor folks almost ‘deserve’ tips), etc. Should we be made to tip them? Should they work and deal with a*****es (citizens, students, bad-assed kids, and guests) and then ask you to tip them or be upset when you don’t tip them. Or worse yet, not tip them ‘enough’?

Hey, here’s one for ya: Should we be made to tip taxi drivers or should they expect a tip from the passenger? I don’t like the compulsory charge or $1 (more) just because I caught a taxi from the airport. I don’t think I should be forced to pay a ‘surcharge’ for fuel. I don’t think anyone should have to pay a surcharge because there is more than one passenger. In that case, shouldn’t the driver credit me for not having friends ride with me? Shouldn’t the CTA tip (read: credit) me for riding the bus to work instead of driving (thereby not contributing to their wealth as a public transportation entity)?

When will we overcome this ‘you owe me’ attitude??

First of all, I tip God by tithing and listening to the word. I tip everywhere I go so, to sterotype or make a generalized blanket statement N$$@rs don’t tip is funny to me because a N^$$*r can be anybody or anything. I have never considered myself a N^$$*r. I consider myself a human. It just goes to show you on the receipt N^$$*r ain’t always people of Color. However, when I get bad service I will leave $3.00

Ok, I’m gonna hang for this but, as a general rule, black people don’t tip. Did I say ALWAYS? No, did I say NEVER? No. But as a general rule, tipping is not associated with my black clientele. I drive cab in Madison, WI. I serve all levels of our community here. I love getting the SISTAS in my cab, cuz we laugh, we joke, they flirt with me, and generally we have a great time. They just don’t tip.

Is that true all the time? Nope. One of the biggest tips I ever got was from a black gentleman. $50 tip on a $20 ride. Did he have a lot of material to lug? Yep. Was my service outstanding? Yep. Was that still an incredibly generous gratuity? YES, YES, and YES!

But it’s the exception.

Now this is even more telling. I talked with a young black guy who had run a nightclub catering to the African American community here. He got out of it because (in his own words) “Black people don’t tip. They don’t even tip black people.”

Now to be fair, there is an enclave of very wealthy people here. Word amongst the cab drivers is “they don’t tip either.” Most of us believe they are wealthy because they still have the first penny they ever earned. They pinch the quarter so hard, you can hear the eagle scream. Oh, and they’re white.

So generally speaking, I would have to say that Black people don’t tip. Or tip much.

I don’t know where this began but it’s got to end, when I was in college I delivered food and I worked for a delivery service that we provided for high end restaurants that don’t deliver, so needless to say I’ve gone to the best neighborhoods and to be honest the richer the people were the less they tipped. I could name countless doctors and lawyers, businessmen and athletes that could easily tip even the standard 15-20% and never would, so it wasn’t only blacks to be fair they[blacks] along with the average guy would usually tip us way better than standard. Also speaking for myself who’s an Afro-Jamaican, I always tip well if the person has a great attitude and is attentive to my table. I’ve also faced people who have the look of oh hell this guy’s not gonna tip like it’s punishment for them to come to wait on me, I’ll usually ask to be seated in another section.

some people took this statement about tipping personal. some people made references to what the waiter makes an hour, “so.” it is the persons job to supply customer service. BAD SERVICE, NO CUSTOMERS NO JOB.

Narrowing it down to just pizza delivery, if one orders a pizza for pick up, there is a price. If the order is for delivery, the price is higher. I have always tipped the pizza delivery person, even though I live 1.5 miles from my local (and favorite) pizza place.

In restaurants, I pull out the tip calculator app on my phone and decide either 15% or 30% depending on the SERVICE and personality/character of my waitperson. I do not base the tip on quality of food or condition of establishment.

I too, try and break the chains of stereotypes.

1. Have stayed away from dating outside of my ethnic culture. (USA standards)
2. Have always done my best to speak concisely and enunciate properly.
3. Have never passed up the opportunity to learn.
4. Feel that teaching (outside of school) is best done by example.

This article had no business being written in the first place and the simple fact that there are people still commenting on it (Yes, including me) just further validates this ignorant article posting they continue to do.

On the whole, PEOPLE have trouble tipping especially if their low on funds. Now, in consideration of race-based discrimination on this particular issue, there is none. Both wealthy whites and Blacks have trouble tipping solely because they feel that it’s their money and don’t have to share it with anyone. Moving along… the word on the receipt can be interpreted as whatever you perceive it to be. I have never been nor will ever be a ni*gger, however there are people that will act like that at certain points.

Now… the real issue was the fact that the woman who received this receipt was harassed after the fact over this drama. Personally… if you’re promoting this kind of discrimination then you deserve to get fired and the delivery driver should have himself locked up for this nonsense. Now, on to more pressing news.

First of all tipping is something that is learned. If you have never been anywhere and no one told you that you should tip then, like most of us, black and white, you do not know any better. I found out about tipping during my first job out of college. On business trips my expense report had a place for lodging, transportation, food and tips. I figured out quickly that was a part of doing business.

So for some people that do not know. Here is who gets tips
Waiters at full service restaurants
Maitre D’s at restaurants
Bartender
People who get cabs at hotels
peoplel who bring your car to you at valet parking
room cleaners at hotels
Cab drivers
Food Delivery (which spurred this debate whether balck people tip)
Postman
Delivery Man
Dry cleaners
yard man
Cleaning Lady at your home
Barbers and Beauticians
Shoe shine person

Many of the people above is a once a year tip. The amounts vary. But you know what you can afford. Think of it as a tax. Also think if you cannot afford the tip, then you cannot afford the service.

Second of all tipping is a part of salary in the service industry. Particularly restaurants, hotels, cabs ect.. In fact when full service restaurants hire you they do not talk about your base salary as much as the amount of tips you can expect to earn. However the amount is what is in question. If it is regular service you give a regular tip. Used to be 10% in the old days. Now it is closer to 15-18%. Many restaurants automatically put on a tip according to the number of guest at the same table or same check.

Most people for good service will give bigger tips. 25-30% nand I have a friend who regularly gives double whatever the check if the service and food is good. I mean $1500 for a $750 check.

I do take hommage at people who demand a big tip for bad service. I will give them the minimum and according to whether there is someone to complain I will not go back to the location.

Also do not be intimidated by these people. Once I ran into an older black lady at the airport who asked me if the $20.00 she had in her hand was a enough tip for the sky captain for 1 bag he helped her with. Recognizing that she probably had limited resources, I felt obliged to say “no maam the norm is $2.00 per bag for a tip”. That was sevreral years ago. now there is a mandatory tip at the airport that I believe the sky caps split with the airlines.

The point is that some folks try to intimidate you into over tipping for bad service. And some people just do not know because they have not been exposed. Also there is a raging battle going on about whether you should tip when people put up their own tip baskets at grocery stores or fast food locations ect. I personally believe this is up to your own discretion.

As a server/bartender with 15 years in the business I will say this. I have seen black people tip huge and white people tip nothing. It depends on the patron and how generous they want to be and how good the waiter is. That is the practical side of it. If you want the numbers, then yes, black people IN GENERAL do not tip as often nor as much.

The question that should be analyzed should be, despite the ethinicty, “why do all people who ever get confronted on this topic, always say they received BAD SERVICE, therefore that individual will justify and default to that bad tip” ….REALLY?

Just how much does someone expect to be tipped at a Dominoes anyway??!

My apologies, if you work at Dominoes as there is certainly nothing wrong with working there. The point I am attempting to make is that most people don’t spend more than $20.00 or so at Dominoes. So even if you tip 20% that is only $4.00! I don’t think I need to be called a N… anywhere, but I definitely don’t need to be called one over $4.00. I have also never seen a Dominoes Restaurant where you can sit down and have a meal. This may be due to the area of the country in which I live. Where I live I have only seen Dominoes take-out places and I don’t tend to tip at any take-out establishment. The folks in the kitchen of the take-out are doing all the work! All the people out front have to do is stand there and take an order.

I think tipping in general has more to do with how one is socialized than anything else. For example, I was taught as a child to tip 10% and I did not find out that the food industry standard was 20% until I was an adult and married to someone who worked in the fine dining industry for many years. In a restaurant where there is actual service (bringing out meals and getting drinks, etc.), I always tip 20%. The “servers” (not “waiters”) are paid next to nothing by their employer and usually far below minimum wage. I have seen as little at 2-3 dollars an hour! Our government (IRS) expects that they will make real money in tips and allows this gross underpayment. Thus, tips are the way the servers make any money. Just think next time if you don’t tip a server that server may not be able to feed his/her kids because of you.

I don’t think most Black folk teach their children to tip 20% primarly because no one taught them to do so.

I also tip 20% just prove that Black people do tip. And I do this no matter how fine the establishment. I figure the folk working at the family dining places need more than the folk at the finer establishments who can make $70,000 plus a year in tips anyway. (Yeah — do the math on a 20% tip for a bottle of Crirstal or a vintage wine for $3000.00.)

Speaking of math, doing a 20% tip is easier to calculate. You don’t need to carry a tip card or a calculator. Make it easy on yourself!
Here is a tip on how to do the math quickly in your head for a 20% tip: First, do 10% and then double it. To do the ten percent, just move the decimal point to left one digit. Example: for a $20.00 bill the 10% percent tip would be $2.00. (See how that decimal point just jumped over to left one digit.) Now just double the $2.00 ($2.00 x 2 = 4 or 2.00 +2.00 = 4) to get the 20% tip, which is $4.00.
It works everytime no matter the amount of the bill! (Bill is 43.56 then tip is 4.35+4.35=$8.70)

I’d have to be treated really terribly not to tip someone. I don’t think not getting my order correct counts. I would have to somehow be insulted and the insult would have to be done on purpose to cause me not to tip. I can excuse visible tiredness or crankiness too. Heck, I’d be cranky too if I had to spend 10 plus hours on my feet smiling when I had nothing to smile about. Understand that there are plenty of rude diners too. Is that you? Check yourself! I have seen folk showing out at places like the Olive Garden. It’s laughable. You, diner, felt disrespected because you got rigatoni instead of angel hair pasta. My advice… get over it. Seriously, if you are lucky to live long enough, you will get disrespcted again by somebody at some point. Besides, it is not like a tip is a lot of money. Few of us are eating 500 dollar meals anyway, so the tip is usually never more than a few bucks. If you can not afford a few extra bucks, then maybe you should be getting take-out or eating at home.

Finally, I will leave a few words about the principles, Christian-based principles, for money. Give. It returns tenfold. I can attest that when I gave freely, I was never poor. It is only when I became selfish that God allowed me to lose most of what I ever loved and I became poor. Give. It is a universal principle.

My previous post was directed entirely to the food industry — obviously. Other industries do vary on the amount for tips. I also neglected to mention that servers often also tip out (pay a portion of their tips) to bussers, bartenders and sometimes hosts/greeters. In short.. TIP!

I too work in the service industry but, on the spa end. I am a Black woman and I don’t really care to work on other black people. The reason is we try too go above and beyond for everyone but, some black people want more than above and beyond. They want to come late, (after closing hours), arrive for their appointments late, throwing your entire schedule off, and then after working hard to make them happy, they just walk out no tip. Sometimes leaving $3.00 dollars for two technicians on a $190.00 service. I’m not saying all black people because some tip me very well and I appreciate that. There are some other nationalities that are horrible tippers as well. I think other comments are correct, some people weren’t taught how to tip as children. The other thing I often get is our prices are already high. My feelings are; if you can’t afford the service, plus tip which our visible policy clearly states, you shouldn’t be coming to that spa. Tips are often how I make it through the week. I guess that’s why I try to tip extremely well because I know how it feels. Last point my boyfriend went out to dinner last week and watched a table full of black males run a black male waiter to death and then walked out without tipping. One came back to get the to go box he left on the table. Not one of them left even a $1.00. How sad.

LMFAO @ alot of these comments. A tip is just that a tip. Something extra for somebody who’s service was something extra. Why are people acting like servers are not on payroll? These people DO get a pay check you know, and when they give good service doing THEIR JOB then some people choose to give a tip. It is not mandatory to tip. That’s why it is called a tip. If it was something that HAD to be done it would be included on the bill automatically, and when then is a table being served with usually six or more people the tip is included. Wow. Keep justifying your cheapness. The fact is until you tip equally some servers won’t serve us as a whole equally. So call it what you want. There’s a Mc donalds on every corner and a grocery store every mile. Be prepared to tip 25% or don’t go out plain and simple. Its not a black thing, its a everything. Want good service be polite, say hello, let the server guide you. He/she will wants your money but they deserve your respect.

Prices are low BECAUSE patrons supplement employees income. Meaning if I’m a good server, I make more money. Depending on service not the fact that you overindulged. So while your still being cheap people are losing their jobs because their tips reflect subpar service but ya’ll are to cheap to, get with the program, and tip.

Men- how you treat your waitress is an indicator (to women) on how you’d treat them later, was rude? Short? Wonder why she iced you.

People who work where they work choose to work there. Don’t get a job where you are going to be depending on your tips to get you through the week. There are no guarantees. Oh and another thing. Don’t expect a tip from anybody! You’re only setting yourself up for disappointment. Haven’t you ever heard you shouldn’t count your chickens before they hatch. This is beacuase I am aware of the stereotype that we do not tip. In my analysis the primary reasons many Black people do not tip are:

A.) Many Blacks are poor and or come from economically improvrished back grounds. White,Black,Brown,etc,Poor people dont tip.

B.) Many Blacks still have that “Whitey owes me something” attitude and this transfers over into the whole not- tipping phenom.

C.) This last reason ties into the 1st. Due to Blacks economical improvishment culturaly we have not been taught to tip and we look upon people in the service industry as simply doing their job. Why would you tip someone for doing their job? This is the logic.

I don’t give a s**t about stereotypes. I wait tables everyone is different. Some ppl take it to heart when they don’t get a good tip. I mean it makes you wonder if you did something wrong. You get a good tip it could make your day and make up for all the s**tty tips you’ve gotten through out the day. You can’t expect a decent tip and Domino’s tho. If the pizza is 13 dollars 18% of that… Now if a person came in and ran me around the restaurant to make sure their meal was great and I know they don’t have a lot of money. I’m happy seeing the folks enjoy themselves. However if you go out run me around act a ass, ghetto, or whatever you want to call it and don’t leave s**t or some change. I might get pissed off. If you don’t want to tip pour your own drinks at home get the hell out of the establishment you’re at, get you own refills while you’re at home, make sure you own food is cooked properly. If the server is a slack ass or bartender isn’t serving you promptly…(T.i.p.s. to ensure prompt service) do what you gotta do tell someone tho for sure. When you go out to eat communicate with your service person try to stay away from the race card. We’re not trying to make anyone feel uncomfortable at all. If you’re in a bad mood or don’t want to tip stay home or go some place where you don’t have to tip. Don’t feel like this person who’s serving you should have to jump thru burning hoops to get your tip. We have a job description like everyone else. There’s certain steps I take from the time I greet the table to the time they are out the door. Listening to smart comments isn’t one but I’ll gladly take group picture, give directions, or make something personally if the guest are action properly in return I expect a decent tip maybe. I’m going to finish this off with don’t be a dick to your food service person you don’t know what kind of day or what kind of person they are, just like they don’t know the same about you. What I find most offensive is that ppl are saying they agree? Are we all freaking crazy? “N****RS” Don’t tip. Where is the national survey that collected thousands of receipts from black people and made a statistical analysis of who tipped what and in what parts of the country etc. Also, black people spend the most money in this country more than other race. So if we don’t tip who cares we more than likely spent thousands eating out, on electronics, cars, clothes etc. We have been the stimulus package long before Obama signed off on it. That’s why foreigners who barely speak English will open up business in black neighborhoods and become stinking rich! Sad but true.

And I said to her we both worked in food service and even if I thought the food cost too much I never said anything about it because the money they spend help pay us. the waiter came back and once again said something about the cost. And when she heard it,,hen she became pissed. At that point we could have walked out and in my mind thats what I think he wanted, so we stayed and she asked what type of tip I would give or would I even give one. Now I thought it was a few ways to do this not leave a tip and play into that image of us not tipping,and making it harder for the next black couple that enters that resturant. The reason you tip certain jobs is becuse of the low pay, min wage or less, and it’s hard work waiting on your ass. Also these employees have to use their own car’s and buy gas and up keep.

I will not tip for bad service. I did one time and was bad all day. This one female try to hit on my date one time. she got nothing.

I do not tip “well” for people doing what they are supposed to do. I don’t get tips for studying in class, or keeping my room clean, or paying my bills on time. It is their job to wait tables/clean/do whatever. Why pay you extra for doing what’s in your job description? I tip my hairdresser because she gives me advice on how to do my hair, and lets me know when something is not right with my hair. If all she did was do what I asked her to do, she gets paid for the service. End of story.

I am 50 years old and have been a server for 25 years ( my entire career). The majority of my jobs have always been in high hotels or restaurants where there is no disagreement/ dysfunctionconcerning tipping. Once in a ble moon we have a demanding person looking for a reason to complain, i.e. not tip. Let me just say oh how you can ruin our day!

I wake at 4:30 every morning, shower, pray and prepare myself to greet and seat strangers that require service of me. In return, I kind of expect some respect also as I am not uneducated or underpriviliged. I attended culinary school, took hospitality courses and am generally happy to please someone. That doesn’t mean that I want to kiss your a– the whole time your there, laugh at your corny jokes or otherwise entertain you. I wake up and have taught myself the art of serving to support myself and my family. Probably the very same reasons you go to work too.

I dont have a problem leaving a tip as long as the person is kind to me. I the person comes with an attitude they can’t serve me at all.

I work in the service industry. I’m a bartender at a beautiful theatre. My personal experience is as follows: Black people will come to the theatre for a play or concert and do nothing but complain about how small the shot of liquor is or how expensive the drink is that night. Well, here’s a tip………Stay Home! If you can’t afford to go to the concert, drink and tip. Stay home, watch and movie and pass out drunk from all the cheap liquor you can hold.

When you get good service with a smile and you order a triple Hen and coke but you don’t leave one dime for the bartender………then yes, we’ve got a problem with it. We dread certain black shows because we know We Won’t Get Tipped!!!!!!!!!!! It’s a FACT.

Show some class. The same ones that don’t tip want food stamps, free medical care and section 8 housing. But they can’t put a dollar or two in the tip jar.

Food service people, in bars and restaurants, make on average $2.50 an hour. Paychecks usually factor in tips, which are calculated at 15% of your sales…whether you get tipped that much or not. So if you assume a service person(waitor, waitress, or bartender) works 80 hours in 2 weeks that would be $200, but then they tax that and your estimated tips, so you actually bring home a check for about $100-$120…this is a generous estimation. Hotels, convention centers, banquet halls, and catering companies usually pay $10+ per hour(these people are grateful for tips, but are usually restricted from soliciting them). Also note that when you have an event at a “venue”, if you tip out the event planner they DO NOT tip out the staff.

TIPS=To Insure Prompt Service…you are tipping the server for promptly attending to you, listening to you, providing you with detailed information about specials/menu items, correctly taking your food order, relaying the order to the kitchen/bar, checking your food before serving it to you to insure that it is prepared/plated correctly, remembering to put condiments with your food(all that extra mayo, etc.), getting it to you in a timely manner, promptly refilling your beverage, and being polite during the entire process(which is not part of their job)…

I know you’re all thinking thats what they get paid to do, but actually, they get paid to simply show up, take orders, deliver food and receive payment. The efficiency and attitude, with which they do it, is what the tip is for.

Patrons AND servers should take this into consideration.

I always tip 20%. For example, if your bill comes to $50 bucks, you leave a Ten dollar tip.
Going out to dinner is not a right. It’s a privilige. Those people who are waiting on you and serving you are human beings who deserve the same respect and consideration as anyone else. Most don’t tip because half of the service is not quality enough for one to want to tip. I am not saying that not tipping is a good thing but perhaps the service need to be improved so that a person would feel comfortable in tipping. It is bad when the service is not good that make you want to pour your own drinks. Most restaurants are so bad that they tend to want to fill you up on the tea so that you won’t eat as much as they expect for you to. Improving the service means better tips. I am glad that I don’t eat out because half of these restaurants score isn’t high enough to make you want to do so

i’m the kind of woman who bases the use of her money on the type of service and product received. not all forms of service deserve a tip. when you are working hard, being polite and ensuring that your customer is ok during their time in your place of business, that is when-as i feel-you deserve a tip. just because your boss or manager assigned you a table and you were able to write down(not word for word sometimes) what the customer wanted and bring it to them, doesn’t warrant a tip. because i’ve known people who work in the service industry who feel that they deserve a tip for waiting on a customer even if their quality of work was horrible. now why would i want to tip someone whose attitude is like that? that’s just a horrible way of thinking. this is why other cultures have a stronger work ethic than natural born american citizens. i’ve never heard of any person of latin descent saying that they deserve to get X amount of dollars for their landscaping work or for cleaning some white lady’s home. no, they have a strong ethic to work hard, provide excellent service and earn their wages. black people are not obligated to tip anyone. the problem i have with this whole issue is that why are black people being singled out for not tipping? are we seriously the only group of people who don’t tip in the ENTIRE WORLD?? there’s no possible freaking way.. seriously. if people were really able to grow up and focus less on shallow issues like tipping service industry employees and focus more on issues of high crime in neighborhoods or graduating with college degrees and not GEDs or how about cutting down on the AIDS/HIV related deaths among black women, then maybe just maybe the black community can actually grow and flourish like we should be doing. this is just another way for those controlling the media to shift our focus from important issues to issues that are not really that important.

First of all, that article was…ugh. “I’ve always stayed away from white girls”. Let me give you a tip of the advice variety…if you are actively and ‘boldly’ and conciously ‘staying away from white girls’ then you aren’t really staying away from them at all. They are living rent free in your psyche. When you gain full confidence and shake off the white man’s bulls**t, you will love your own black self, and then see the undeniable beauty and allure of the black woman. No need to ‘stay away from white girls’ because you will be naturally drawn to the black woman. Or maybe even naturally drawn to a white girl. I’m digressing like a mothasucka, lets get to the tipping.

I always tip very well, because I think it is something I enjoy doing. I think it is the right thing to do to tip at least what is considered standard these days (20 percent) but I tend to tip between 30 and 40 percent because it makes me feel good for a few reasons, which I will list below. Before I get all listy, let me just state up front, I am not rich, I am a working class woman…but I don’t make it a habit to dine out because I automatically add 35 percent tip in my head to what I think the evening will cost me, and if I can’t afford that, I will make something delicious at home. The good reasons to tip well are:

1. It feels good. It’s one of my little thrills in life, so I do it.
2. The servers are underpaid. They make very little because management is allowed to figure in tips.
3. It is good for my character. By that I mean, I notice that a lot of people, white and black, tend to look down on some servers. I think often people do that because it is the one area where they may feel they have some clout or control. I find that attitude weak and repulsive. You don’t kick the server who can’t do anything to defend themselves without threatening their livelilood. That is cowardly. Anyone who is rude to service people make me question their character. If one can manage to be unfailingly polite to waitstaff, it builds one’s own character and makes one a bigger person.

Now, if anyone is still reading this long ass ramble, I am about to blow your mind…there is absolutely NO WAY I won’t tip. And I have had some seriously bad service (rarely, but it has happened.)

One time, I was treated to what I am sure was racism by a white waitress. I won’t go into the gory detail, but suffice it to say, she was extremely rude to me and my guest. I still left her minimum standard tip (20 percent these days, but I do believe this was a few years ago and standard was 15 percent at the time).

I told the manager what I had experienced, and he was very apologetic, gushed over me and my guest with free meal tickets and apologies and promises and such. He promised she would be disciplined and I don’t know or care if she was. I do know that my own policy is not affected by any outsider, regardless of the extent to which they show their asses. I don’t react emotionally to emotional wrecks. So I do what I always do in a tipping situation, and tip standard. Because even that horrible woman deserves to be paid an honest wage for the hours she puts on the clock, and for waitstaff, that includes tips. If she continues in her incompetence, then she should be fired, and get no wage at all. Sooo…yeah. That’s what I think of that.

Who are these black people who don’t “tip” and where do they live? I have seen many random offenders at varied establishments breaking the laws of gratuity…they weren’t all black. A “tip” being customary rather than mandatory means that lousy service will be answered with lousy compensation. This means that the more my server smiles at me, checks on me, defends my right to send a bad meal back to the hellish kitchen it came from, the more I’ll enrich them. 15, 20% , even 25% for my usual waitress at my usual haunt cuz I like her hips. Just yesterday we went to a chinese buffet. Not only one, but two ladies kept coming to our table to remove plates and ask if we needed anything, was everything alright, and if there was anything we wanted that we didn’t see on the buffet.
Needless to say, for a $40 ticket, they got a $10 tip($5 a piece)

I work in Customer Service industry and Black people , ESPECIALLY BLACK MEN, tip….no joke seriously. I always get tips. I get good tips from White people, latin people, Black men, asian people, middle eastern people. SERIOUSLY, I dont come across a lot of black women who tip, but I have occasionally got a tip from a black woman. So I can’t say black women don’t tip. It’s just that black women on a whole don’t tip consistently. A few years ago they did a poll of the bars and restaurants in Philly and They said Black men tip the best, then white men, and honestly they said black women tip the worst, if they did tip at all.

I worked a credit union and got good tips (not supposed to take them) and gifts from the black people. I always took care of them, making sure they stayed informed, tried to help them make good financial decision and went to bat for them when it looked like they might not get the loan (only long term responsible members). The white people were nice to me but nowhere near as nice as the black people. I also met this guy who is server. He told me race doesn’t determine the tip, it’s the service you deliver that determines the tip. I agree with him because I am a black woman that always tips 20%. now those who give bad service get quarters or just the auto gratuity nothing extra. The server also said people who blame race on bad tips give bad service, and he”s Indian. And hell I tip everybody my nail tech (she’s black), my hairstylist, valet, curb side at the airport, the lady who wrapped my cookies at the cookie shop. I love exceptional customer service so I give tips and sometimes I will call the manager to acknowledge that exceptional employee.

I do tip. Most of the black people I know give tips on most occasions. The only reason I haven’t tiped in the past is because I have received bad service. Maybe its quite possible that nonblacks get better service than blacks; thereby, blacks may have less of a tendency to tip. Note to servers: treat me right and I treat u rite. Good service is n most cases awarded with good tips bad service with little or no tips.

I would have to disagree with this article. I am a server at a sports bar/restaurant. I have served people of all races. This stereotype is far from true. If anything, I receive the best tips from black people, more specifically, black men. At the same time, if servers would have a better attitude and do a little bit more than just the “norm,” I’m pretty sure their tips would be bigger. I enjoy being a server. My tips at the end of the night lets me know that I am doing a pretty damn good job at what I do!

@dredre09…I understand that you may be struggling financially, but trust me, most servers only make (give or take) $2.13 an hour. They have to depend on tips. People like you assume that we make all this money and in some cases, we don’t. There are nights when we’re lucky enough to make enough money to put gas in our tanks. You say you don’t tip because you only have enough money for the food. Well, if you budget correctly and get a meal that’s cheaper than what you would usually buy, you would have more than enough change left over to tip your server.

I have been a server for many years and it is my experience that the majority of black people tip very little if anything at all……….its a sad and ugly cycle we perpetuate within our own community. Black people who have on many occasions recieved bad service by waitresses or others in the service industry tip very little. People in the service industry stereotype black people because of this trend and therefor give bad service……the cycle never ends. lol.

Some of the best tips i ever got were from my fellow brothers and sisters, so i try to take care not to prejudge and give every guest 100% service at all times but……….damn i get tired of getting stiffed too.

I love my job but I do make around $ 2.13 an hour and I have a family and bills just like everyone else. My people we really do HAVE to do better. If you have a good experience pay it forward……….

Im like the author of this article I over tip to avoid stereotypes of our people. Plus as a server I know the next time I come through that establishment I will be remembered by that employee and they will make sure my needs are met………….

I never understood why some blacks don’t tip. I always tip because my first job as a teen depended soley on tips. I bagged groceries at a commissary at age 15 and it allowed me to buy my first boom box. Ever since, I would always tip and if I knew I didn’t have enough money to tip beforehand, I wouldn’t go into the restaurant/diner or if it was for a delivery, I’d try to give the delivery person something/anything. The worst tip I ever gave, like the author, was $1 for bad service. The waitress was so busy trying to hang out with her off duty friends she never came back as we were trying to get her attention for refills. She wasn’t happy and voiced her opinion and we made sure we told her why she only got $1 loud enough for her manager to hear. Apparently though, blacks have a bad reputation for not tipping and even blacks who work in service industry will say this too. An even worse reputation than jews who people say will quibble over the size of the tip right down to the penny. But at least they tip.

I work as a skin care therapist at several full service salons and I will agree that the majority of Black People do not tip. In the salons frequented primarily by Whites, the tips are appropriate and most of the time generous and thank me for the extraordinary service that I give. ON the other hand in the salon patronized primarily by African Americans the tips are very poor even though the service is stellar.

I am old enough to remember segregation at that time I remember African Americans were tipped generously for good brown skin service.

Now, across economic lines we are afraid to tip or refuse to or we nitpick until there is no tip.

i try to tip all the time since i used to be a waitres. but if i just ordered some coffee or something more than likely no tip unless i had the extra cash. but if its a meal i like to tip and i budget the tip into the total cost of the meal so that i am prepared to pay it. When i was a waitress the black would tip but it would be like a dollar or two. The white ppl left me anywhere from 5 to 20 per table. Drunk white men tip the best tho lol

This is the only country where tipping has become “a Demand for Payment”… services have actually gone as far as adding a tip to your bill “weather you like it or not.” I suppose now, if I don’t tip (server had an attitude, or I just didn’t want to) I can expect to receive a letter in the mail from a collection agency, have my credit score reduced to zero, and a lean placed on my home… Oh yeah… did I mention the cross burning in the front yard the next morning… uuuhhh… and the increased medical bills I will incur from having both of my nee caps broken. And, I guess if I really make the server mad I’ll actually wake up the next morning on a slow boat to Chine with cement overshoes on… WOW… all of that, and all I really wanted was a hamburger. Maybe I should have stayed home and popped some popcorn, hell… I’m scared to go out anywhere anymore, these people can be mean…. you got bouncers beating the shyt out of people for no reason, and everything else… how about getting your salad tossed in your face by your date… do I still need to leave a tip then too?

SOME POINTS OF INTEREST:

1) I work in the ground transportation industry, tipping does let someone now that what they did for you was appreciated. That’s why it’s called a Gratuity… the question is, is it ok to Demand a tip by adding it to your bill with-or-without your OK..? They use to ask first you know.

2) Tipping use to be cool (a kind of gift)… now that it’s added it to the bill it’s no longer a “tip”… it’s a Charge… and yes… the IRS sees it that same way, and you “WILL” have to pay taxes on them… so that 15% tip just became a 12% tip. For you the customer, by it being added to your bill now you have a legitimate write off for that grat.

3) Whites DO tip “white” drivers better.

4) Yes, Blacks do tip.

5) Asians are the least likely to tip…i.e. the Japanese custom is $1 dollar US, as Gratitude.

6) Wealthy people are the “cheapest” tippers of all… 20% of the customers we service are coming from 3 to 5 million dollar homes… MOST do not tip anything (black or white).

my cousin works in the food service industry at a “fridays”. she was raised in a home were people of all races are the same. shes in college. since working in the food service she has become very jadded about black people. always complaining about waiting on them. huge groups several kidds constant demands, and usually an unrealistic tip. often the tables require 2 servers and little or nothing as far as tips. the best is the black waitresses weasel out of waiting on the blacks and the comment is because they don’t tip. i for one am a white guy and i am neither surprised or upset. it is just the way it is.

lol it is a taught behavior, I just left from Vegas and I find that most people dont tip. But whats funny is the reaction you get when you do. In situations where you will return you best believe that person remembers you and you do actually get better service. Remember people service people arent doing this for their health this is their job.. they are there to make money, not because the like you and just want to help. Oh and side note. When you tip someone you tip them for a good job they have done, I believe in tipping and at times I feel like maybe I didn’t leave enough. Do you know that a waitress/waiter only makes a few dollars an hour and depend on tips as their wage, the state of PA hourly amount for waitress/waiters is 2.00 something an hour, now if your going to go in and not leave a tip to that person that is making hardly any money an hour, your just god damn rude. I could see not tipping someone because the service was horrible (believe me I’ve had some horrible service) but to just not tip is just super rude and I don’t care what color you are. Everyone jumps on whites about everything, when its not about the COLOR of your SKIN.

But I hardly go out to eat, when I do I tip based on the QUALITY OF SERVICE and how many people I am with. If the waiter/waitress is disrespectful then he/she will get a bulls**t tip. But when everything is smooth I leave about 10 to 15 dollars. If you’re in a large group and the service is onpoint then you should leave at least 20 to 25 dollars. People don’t understand that customer service is the most important part of business. That says a lot about a business.

I am a african american waitress and whenever a table of black people leaves a bad tip to one of my white co-workers I have to try and defend why it happened. I believe that alot of times the reason they may have gotten a bad tip is because they approach the table with the mindset that they are not gonna get a tip. This irritates me and I have gotten to where I would rather take every black table that comes in which are not many just so that I don’t have to hear about how black people don’t tip.

Okay, your strategy to offend people worked. I’ve gotta say something.
First, getting this out of the way: I’m white. Maybe you’ll judge me based on that, maybe not.
I always tip, and I tip well — usually on the upper end of 15-20%. I’m not rich (I have a minimum-wage job) and I don’t feel any sort of godly entitlement.
I tip because it’s polite. Because people are NOT obligated to serve me, especially not for free.
I tip because waiters and waitresses are legally allowed to be paid lower than minimum wage since they also collect money from tips, and I don’t want to screw them over.
I tip because I have a minimum-wage retail job. We have a tip jar on the counter, and every time some one puts money in it makes my day. One time a customer put $5 in the jar and it made me smile for the entire month. I still remember his face and if I see him again he’s going to get the best service ever.
Is it worth an extra $1, maybe even $5, to make a stressed, underpaid person happy? To me it is.
What does race have to do with it? Why should race have anything to do with it? We’re all just people.

P.S. Some people have put this issue in the context of slavery, which is understandable considering what a twisted, horrible thing it was. But please try to understand that not all white people are to blame. Consider that a lot of whites aren’t even related to anyone who was involved in slavery — my ancestors, for instance, were over in Ireland getting invaded by the British and then trying to avoid dying from a potato famine. Yes, some white people are bigoted a*****es, but so are a lot of people in general, regardless of race.

I have noticed a developing trend. Everytime white people say something about us true or false we feel the need to conference about thier statement. Maybe we should suggest black folks stop EATING AT THOSE ESTABLISHMENTS!! Wow, all of this over some fast food? C’mon man all that is killing us anyway. I remember not tipping in my younger days when dining out was a rare thing and my money was tight. I tip now the best I can when I dine out making sure I have enough money for the meal and a great tip. The problem I have with tipping our sistas is when they have this mean attitude and look on their faces saying they would rather be any where but there,give you service without a smile or a genuine smile and expect me to tip them big. A few sistas that have waited on me do give great service with a genuine smile and I would feel guilty if I did not tip them big. The other mean sistas tho, they’re lucky they get a buck out of me.

I’ve been a hair stylist since 1992 and I’ve had clients of all races. I can honestly say most of my clients tipped well regardless of what race the were. Some were better than other. Like the man who tipped me $50 and the lady who tipped me $100. But most tipped Between $5 and $30. I had a few who didn’t at all and some who did on my birthday and christmas. I’ve done hair in Charlotte and Raleigh, NC and Nashville, TN.

I take groups of black athletes to eat from time to time, and kids from our church youth group, and I have to be prepared to TEACH them to tip B/C they (most) were not taught to by parents or any one else. I had to learn to tip, and why, while in college (by the WHITE kids!) probably be cause my parents never went took us to a dinner restaurant (8 kids, in the 60′s and 70′s) and I was not exposed to such issues. It all comes down to lack of training. To many are clueless about table manners and etiquete.(sp)

It’s like this people if the waiter/waitress knows that their livlihood depends on their abilities to serve their customers, then they should be doing backflips and cartwheels to make sure they do that. there are certain things you shouldn’t have to wait for ie silverware, napkins, refills on your drink, though the resturant might be busy and they’re a bit overwhelmed its not the customers fault and they should get proper service regardless. The way the establishment is managed also plays a part in the tipping. Tell you a quick story that happened to me and my then girlfriend now wife went to a restaurant (Ruby Tuesday) for lunch one day, we walked in and there was virtually nobody there but the staff, we got our seats after they figured out which of them would seat us. Now I will admit that I like to eat in a clean place anybody with since should, but the tables had food debris on them along with the chairs, there was food on the floor it was just nasty in there to say the least. Me and my wife are noticing and discussing these things when the waiter finally comes over after about 15 minutes no lie, we pointed some thing out to him I even asked him if they were open for business mind you its about 4 or 5pm he said yes they were open I then asked was the manager off that day he said no the manager was there. I said well whats going on cause I really couldn’t believe what I was seeing, he replied “we just having a off day thats all” his exact words. So im not only shocked and discusted but im now a bit amused, I said ok well were gonna come back when you all are not so off. That was 2005, we have yet to return. In the old saying you get what you pay for, the waiter/waitress need to think in those terms in reverse. People pay for what they get.

If restaurant service is up to par, I will tip between 18 – 20% — depending on the degree of satisfaction in performance delivery. If the service was extraordinary, I will tip 25%.

Just as ambience can add to one’s dining experience, a waiter/waitress can truly morph your dining experience from simply good to exceptionally good. We have had waiters who have actually entertained us as they served our food, who have made sure that our beverages were constantly replenished, and who have catered to our every dining whim. A waiter who goes the extra mile deserves to be compensated — based on the societal gratuity process that is currently in place. However, I wholeheartedly believe that gratuity should reflect the measure of service delivery. The wait person should receive a tip according to his commitment to excellence, and his commitment to serving YOU.

I always tip my stylist 20%. Apparently she is not used to this because she treats me like a SUPER STAR. She NEVER lets me wait, and sometimes she even throws in free services to demonstrate her appreciation. In addition to tipping her, I often bring her little gifts – NOTHING REALLY EXPENSIVE, but maybe a can of almonds, peanut brittle of vegan muffins. My hair is definitely my crown-n-glory (real hair that is to the middle of my back), and the person responsible for taking care of it is someone who I make sure that I also take care of. As the old adage states: “one hand washes the other!”

I do NOT, however, tip service providers who are hired on an on-going continuum, i.e., landscapers, housekeepers, lawn pesticide exterminators, etc… Because they are commissioned on an annual retainer with me, I feel our agreed upon monthly fee is sufficient. During the Christmas holidays, I generally give a small token gift to these service providers.

SIDEBAR: Although I tip, I do not agree with basic premise of gratuity. I believe service providers should receive an income from their employers that compensate them accordingly. Their salary should NOT hinge on how much the people they service elect to give them. The whole process of tipping needs to be re-examined

I still say BE THANKFUL FOR WHATEVER YOU RECIEVE. I find it crazy that people say, if you don’t tip, don’t go to the establisment. Only reason that puzzles me is because if the place gets no business the server has nowhere to work in the first place.. Maybe it’s just me.

I have recently returned from a trip to Las Vegas and the amount of tipping I did was ridiculous!
18-20% tipping for doing your job is not normal behaviour! Sorry if that makes me sound like i’m cheap but its the truth.
While checking out of the hotel a bell hop (a brother at that) gave me the dirtiest look ever because i didn’t tip him for lifting my suitcase and putting it on a trolley! lol A job that took him all of 3 seconds!

OK, there was this one time, a few years ago, the server at this IHOP in MD was so bad I didn’t leave a tip her. I had no untensils to eat my food… Asked for untensils and she still didn’t bring them. One of the managers saw me sitting there looking upset and had one of the women who cleaned the tables bring me some. There was an attitude that came with the service also. I wouldn’t know if it was because it was a busy time, she was having a bad morning, or if it was based profiling. That server can try to apply the stereotype, but she should consider how she would feel and react after receiving that type of service.

This author needs to stop stereotyping and generalizing AND, get a life!!! Why don’t you comment on the white people who don’t tip…

@only1kiku – thank you for such an intelligent response. I didn’t learn about tipping growing up, but thankfully someone did educate me as a young adult. I have to admit I never knew this was such a widely-held belief amongst servers in the restaurant industry. Looking back at some of the experiences I’ve had at restaurants, this explains a lot.

I’d like to add a couple more notes:

Tips should based on the total of food and drinks before taxes
If you are using a coupon or have a buy one entree, get one free deal, the tip should be based on the full amount of the bill before the discount.

The worst tippers are old black ladys at church. It will be 5 of them at a table on a Sunday.

One reason why upscale dining places choose not to locate in high black areas. Waiters always complain about lack of tips.

Generalizing people is what perpetuates the kind of problem you see which is fuel for mental sickness of racism and negativity. How would you feel if you see people running to the back when you walk into a public place? Imagine seeing them run like harlots to a john grinning an cheesing when a so called white customer walks in. We have to understand that has always been the historical white racist response to serving so called blacks,” DO NOT SERVE NIGS” and if you do, do it with as much disrespect and degradation as you can to discourage their patronage of that establishment.

That has been the historical social and mental conditioning which makes many African Americans feel they are unwanted in the first place. Why give your hard earned money to people who despise you in their hearts? Believe me, money comes hard for most African Americans who do legal work. What about those stats that so called blacks earn way less than so called whites? How much of a factor does that statistic about reality play in having extra money to leave a person who serves you with such contempt?

Personally, I tip if the service is good. But, we have to be mindful that many companies are cheating their employees by paying them less than minimum wage. However,mandatory tipping puts the pressure on employees to treat customers right. But, if a service provider has such pre negative feelings about a person they are serving, as you clearly do, it can be felt. The smiles are so fake, the difference in service can be clearly noticed. Thus, you get what you are projecting out. Even if African Americans do tip, the complaint is that its too small. There is nothing a perosn can do right when your mentality about them is so wrong. I tip well so well that a waitress gave me her name and asked I always sit in her section.

With that positive personal legacy, can my individual performance in tipping earn me your respect when your first reaction to my skin color makes you run to the back with your fellow so called white employees in a chorus of pitiful complaining and false accusations about me based on my skin color? Try walking up to them with a genuine smile and treat them with respect. Make them feel welcomed and I will promise you they will scrape together something to give to you for a tip. I know my people well enough to know that if you make them feel welcomed and treat them equally as they see you treating other customers, they will do their best to bring a tip for you.

However, if you keep doing what you are doing, letting them see you behave like you do not want or care about them, expect the same results and that is how every customer, including so called whites, reacts to poor service given with disrespect for the patronage.

Do you know why it’s important to tip? Servers get paid LESS than minimum wage! Let’s say a server has 4 tables with 4 customers at each table. Each table is filled for ohhhh, let’s say 1 hour. So for 1 hour, the server is responsible for making 16 people happy. Guess how much he/she gets paid for taking care of 16 people?? $2.13!! That’s it! No matter how much money the restaurant made for that hour, all they will pay the server is $2.13. Also, a shift doesn’t last longer than 4 hours…imagine for a minute that you worked 4 hours non-stop and no one tipped you…you just made $8.52 for 1/2 day work!!

I was taught at a young age about tipping so I take great offense to this stereotype. I work very hard for my money but if someone is providing a service that makes my life easier, I have NO problems tipping appropriately.

The reason why tipping isn’t generally an issue in other countries is because prices have all the “extras” included already. If you see something that says 9.99, that includes TIP and TAX!! Would never happen in the great US of A!!!

Sidenote: When you order food TO GO from a restaurant, you are still supposed to TIP!

statistics have studied and found out that black women are the biggest tippers so i dont know where they are getting this info from. i tip all of the time but if some snobby ass server come to my table letting me know that they aren’t thrilled to be serving me then either i will leave or will not tip. i used to be a server and you can make some serious money but attitude and a good memory is everything.

When I think of it, most of my career oriented or educated friends tip well. Those who work in other industries don’t seem to get the point. I remember in my mid 20′s, I went out on this date with a guy to a peruvian restaurant for lunch. Although the restaurant was not expensive (our meal came to like $18 total) he had the nerve to leave a dollar tip. F & L for me (first and last date). I couldn’t believe it and I was so embarrased that I put a few more dollars with the tip as we were leaving the restaurant.

Here are some rules of thumb.

1. If you can’t afford to tip then don’t go out for dinner or drinks. Grab a bottle from the wine shop or hit the liquor store. Go pick up your food rather than eating out where service is required.
2. 15% is industry standard. If the server does a great job – don’t be afraid to reward them for it.

Anyway, on-topic, I work retail and haven’t noticed any difference in tips from black people and white people. There’s also an equal distribution of politeness and the amount of money they spend. Russian people spend the most money but they NEVER TIP :|

On the flip side I have been forced to tip because of a gratuity by a racist restaurant and waiter in Oakland, County Michigan where this white guy was rude, hateful and spiteful to us. To keep the peace one of our guest suggested that we just pay the gratuity despite the racist treatment and just leave never to return again. This guy may have very well spit in our food but this is why we don’t eat out much these days because we also got racist treatment at a Denny’s restaurant in Michigan. So forgive me if I don’t see the lack of black tippers and a problem or something we should be concerned about.

i think the problems is people dont know anything about waitressing. They make 2.30 a hour and the national percentage your suppose to tip is 18% . They dont work a full 8 hours and simply people dont know alot about the resturant business. people spend more money then they have when they go out and dont account for tipping

I always tip! People have to understand that these people serve your food, they make LOW wages, if they are fired they have nothing to lose because they spit in your food. So always tip and be extra nice to your waiter or waitress! Do you want to come down with food poisoning? Always tip bad service or not, If you have bad service say something like ” I know your probably having a bad day but it will get better besides I try my best to be easy on the eyes.” That will relax them and your service should pick up.

I have had many (black) servers say to me ‘black people don’t tip’. Albeit a stereotypical comment, there is truth to it. The (black) girls i know from the biz used to force the trainees to take the tables when they suspected “non-tippers”, and most often, those “suspects” were black. this is bull. i am white and from 1977 to 1988 i drove checker cab in the detroit inner city (and i was treated very well, thank you!). i had no contact with upper middle class whites so my impressions are based on how working class blacks and whites tip or don’t tip. in my opinion white working people tip as a habit and only refuse to tip if you really screw up. black working people, i think, tip based on your performance and are much quicker to refuse to tip. but if treated with what i think of as ordinary respect (which has obviously been lacking very often towards black consumers), they will tip same as whites. some white drivers, who lingered on the whiter fringes of the city then, used to say to me “blacks don’t tip,” and i would tell them “blacks don’t tip you!” i didn’t kiss any butt but i spoke respectfully to people and usually enjoyed good conversation, and i had no problem getting tips that pretty much averaged what whites would tip. in my opinion, all it takes is an attitude toward all the public that is simply respectful and friendly, that’s all that’s needed. i think, though, that blacks are very good at sensing what your real attitude is even when you may think you are hiding it. i believe that they could tell that i was not negative towards them and was frequently enjoying myself in their company. but, again, for whites who may be reading this, this does not mean that you have to kiss butt, which is also quickly recognized and disliked. just be a decent person and you will be pleasantly surprised. i probably had more fun conversations with black riders than whites! i kind of miss those days!

Because the vast majority of them are poor, and the money they used to pay for the meal was stolen. Mystery solved.

1. I don’t tip, because I can use that money elsewhere. 2. I also don’t feel it is necessary to tip, because waiters are still being paid. Don’t buy into that crap that all they make is off tips/commission, because that is illegal. It is required by federal law that you must earn at least minimum wage.
3. This is a new age. Just like women have become independent, the era of tipping has become taboo and irrelevant to the social class structure. From cold food, to mixed up orders, to flat out rudeness; if the service isn’t at a certain level, I refuse to tip.

I usually tip very well I think. First Off If your going to a fine restaraunt to be served the repay the Man/Woman for servicing you. Now If they Mess up then it reflects on the tip. I think there was only 1 time I didnt’ tip someone because they screwed up so badly. Now then That Domino’s Pizza Guy obviously doesn’t realise that black folks actually know that if you get delivery then its a higher price cause the tip is in the cost. That instance I won’t tip the Driver since I’m not going to tip twice. Pizza Drivers also make like 12 an Hour Starting But I don’t know where the guy try to say waiters and waitresses make minmum wage. They do not. It’s still like 2.45 or 3.00 or something like that. They still have to report there tips for tax purposes.

I tip. I have found that good tips can get you better service. I make sure that I give my pizza guy a good tip. My pizza is always right. I can’t tell you how many times I have gotten extras on my pizza. I know others on my street who have gotten some jacked up food and guess what they have never tipped.

I also make sure I tip my hairdresser well. Never piss off people doing your hair and cooking your food. lol Especially if it is a place that you frequent often. If the service is poor then yes my tip will be less.

I had an in law say that she tried to get her hairdresser to squeeze her in on a Saturday. I asked her if she was a tipper. She was like NO. I never tip. I said umm hmmm that ‘s why she didn’t squeeze you in. If she were a good tipper then she would have made time for her. People remember when you don’t tip and they remember when you tip well.

I remember the T.G.I.Friday’s in Atlanta which was owned by Magic Johnson closed because no one wanted to work there because of a lack of tips but everyone was complaining when it shut down.

I can’t say if it is a black thing because I know both blacks and whites who don’t tip. I think it really just depends on how you view tipping. Some people feel that the employer should pay waiters higher wages and others look at it as it’s their job to give good service.

In Michigan (last I checked) the minimum wage for service people is less than $4 per hour instead of the $7 or $8 that others get. The state lets businesses do this because they expect people are going to make up the difference in tips. Take a look at your local minimum wage poster and you’ll see the difference.

I personally tip and tip well because I know I would hate any and all the types of jobs that customarily receive tips.

I work a side hustle in the service industry and it is not just blacks who don’t tip. Europeans are pretty notorious and then the people from the pacific rim can be brutal. I had an Indian woman (ghandi not tonto) give me a tip, she wrapped one dollar up so tight I thought she broke me off nice. I wanted to track her down just to see how she did that. hahaha. It is all how you treat people, I treat regular folks just like I treat people who are stars. They are all people. The weird part about this game is that you never know. Example, I worked like a mule to help these people get their stuff loaded on a hotel shuttle bus, NOTHING. One day I pick up a guys gym bag, load it on the bus he puts something in my pocket, I don’t check until later and he broke me off a $50.00. It’s all timing when you do this. I know that I do tip well, I am black but if I get treated like SHYTE you aren’t even getting the dollar, I wrote TRY HARDER on a receipt when the person was horrible. Why should I reward that in any capacity?

Rick- actually that is not totally accurate. It isn’t illegal to pay less than minimum wage on jobs that are service oriented, because the expectation is that the tips will compensate for the gap between the wage and minimum wage. If a server makes less than minimum wage with tips, many states expect an employer to cover the difference. Laws vary from state to state, so you can check the Dept. Of Labor for your particular area. Whether your personal feeling is that you have better things to do with your money, and times have changed, the reality is that many service oriented positions still depend on tips. That’s how they survive, so if I don’t have money to tip, I order a more inexpensive option, or cook at home! You are correct that times are changing, however as long as tips are still an aspect of how they are paid, I will honor the system because they deserve to be compensated.

As for pizza drivers tzford …I don’t know where you live but the cost of a pizza, pick-up or delivered is the same, that extra charge is not a tip, does not go to the driver. That is a fuel charge of $1-$1.5 if they are using a comapany car, that doesn’t go to the driver. And if the driver is using their own car they get nothing.

These people (most anyway) work very hard for their living and a tip is definitely part of how they pay their bills. Who really refers to themselves as a N$%%#r anyways? So I am not exactly sure who the Dominos driver was referring and personally do not care. My only concern is me and what I do when confronted with certain issues. First of all please check your facts. It is indeed true that waiters and waitresses do NOT make minimum wage with their salary alone. The average waiter in most cities will make a flat salary of $2.13-$2.50 an hour, guaranteed paid from the company. The company is allowed to do this because it is assumed that the waiter’s tips will make up at LEAST enough to bring the hourly up to minimum wage. My first job in high school was as a waitress and I made $2.15 an hour from the company, the rest was made up in tips.

Secondly while I was a waitress in a pretty mixed part of town I never noticed that black people tipped less often than whites at all. You have your good and bad tippers over all regardless of race.
Now, what I have noticed as a black woman with a diverse group of friends is that a group of non blacks are typically treated better then a group of majority blacks. I have noticed this more than once but one incident stands out most. I am dating myself a bit but I can remember around 2000 a group of my classmates and I went out to dinner. We were a group of about 8 black graduate students. We were treated so badly that for the first time ever I did not tip. This was very hard for me for two reasons. 1. Waitressing was my first job and I know how difficult it can be 2. My mother taught me manners and to treat others with respect and she tipped. Due to these two facts, I always tip. I have received horrible service from a nice person who was clearly trying and I tipped them. I have received ok service in a situation where the food was not good and I tipped (because the quality of what comes out of the kitchen is not the servers fault). However, this waitress was so disrespectful to entire group that we all agreed not to tip her.

My only regret and what I would change if I had to do it all over again was the fact that we did not involve the manager. I wish that we would have called the manager over to advise him or her why we did not tip this particular waitress. In the future I would make sure to involve someone in authority at the establishment so that my refusal to tip is not linked to a stereotype but is linked directly to the server’s attitude.

First of all Blacks are still the most disrespected, underserved, and discriminated against in many elite establishments. Also occasionally, diners choose an eatery specifically to suite their budget. For example: If I only have $5.00 to spend for lunch, it it would be counterproductive to leave a dollar tip and then can’t afford the bus ride home. Plus Blacks are super sensitive to poor service, in fact, sometimes we imagine poor service and/or racist attitudes. When such an incident occurs, real or imagined, a tip is inappropriate. Yes they are, Lawrence. Again, a servers hourly wage may be less than minimum wage because there is an expectation that tips will cover the difference. Minimum wage is based on gross, not net. Also there are states that have higher minimum wages than the federal requirement, which is why I commented on the state variables.

Actually the tip is not in the additional charge. The delivery charge I believe is for gas and varies from place to place. Honestly if you don’t want to tip then you should do carryout NOT delivery.

I always tip, and like most, even when service is bad. I believe that many African Americans simply do not know what the actual hourly rate is for a server. The majority of servers only make $2.15/$2.45 per hour. And, YES THIS IS MINIMUM WAGE FOR SERVERS.

Most servers do not make above this amount; and if they do, it maybe $ .20-.50 cent more per hour. Out of this amount, any tips that they receive, they have to report by law; and they have to pay taxes on this money. The reporting is done through the employer, and before you leave at the end of your tip. Most servers never receive a paycheck. If they do, the check is very small, ($25-$35) if that much. Most companies pay every two weeks. So for 2 weeks of work, the servers check may be this amount; maybe more-maybe less.

Now, what is suppose to occur, if that server does not make enough in tips to bring their hourly rate up to minimum wage, $7.25 per hour, (for all hour worked) then the employer is suppose to make up the difference to bring them up to $7.25 per hour. This includes any industry, where people work for tips or commission. Does this always happen? No. There are so many companies that get over on their workers because they don’t know what the law requires.

So as you can see, what you tip makes a difference in that person’s ability to pay rent, utilities, buy groceries, etc. Most of us do not know how much servers really make per hour. They assume that they are making above minimum wage, $7.25 per hour, and they don’t.

In my travels, I have seen servers run ragged. Providing excellent service, anticipating the customers needs, getting them everything that they ask for and they do it with a smile. Only to be left $3-$5 dollars, if that, at the table?! And there were atleast 3-5 people at the table. I am in disbelief and awwh, many times than I care to mention.

The lack of tipping not only occurs at the casual dining-neighborhood restaurants, but I’ve seen the same thing happen in some upscale dining facilities. This is why most restaurants automatically include gratuity in the check for this very reason.

Look, here is my personal rule of thumb. If it is just you, then tip 15% of the ticket or $5 dollars, whichever one is greatest-at minimum. If it is atleast than two of you, or more, then each person tip $5 each. This way you would have rewarded the server for their time and the excellent service that they have provided. And you have helped them out with gas, food, rent or whatever. But here is the key; they will remember you the next time that you come in, and so will the other servers. Why? Because you tip well, and you will always be given courteous service and treated well; the next time that you come in.

If the service is horrible, the rule use to be, that you leave 1 penny on a saucer, with the coffee cup turned over on top. This is to let the server know that their service was horrible. But I do suggest leaving $1 dollar instead.

I was a Restaurant Manager for 10 years. I am an Auditor today, I travel alot, and have seen evern more. Being a server is nothing easy; no one’s job is easy. And I hope, that this response is passed along, discussed and taken to heart. Because, I honestly believe that some of us, just don’t know.

I have always tipped more in hopes that the stereotype is challenged. In restaurants, I tip 20% and if the order is small say like $10.00 I will usually make sure the waiter gets $4-$5 since 20% is would have only meant a couple bucks. As for as cabs I always tip at least a dollar more than fair and sometimes more if the cab driver doesn’t look like they are milking the meter or trying not to make lights on purpose. Most of the time cab drivers have offered business cars when I want a pick up to or from the airport because I the way I respect and tip them. Waiters and bartenders are happy to see me return and usually give me even better service than before which is usually already good and freebies and discounts.

I work as a server for a very popular American restaurant in the Southern U.S. Generally Blacks do not tip. I generally think its because they are not being mean but just plain don’t know any better. It is an indication of lack of culture and not being aware that tipping is generally a social norm. I would hypothsize that Black culture in regards to dining is usually done at home or in a family setting; not at public restuarants, therefore the idea of tipping, although heard of, is not really honored. And if a tip is left by a Black person $2 seems to be the standard tip amount regardless of ticket amount or level of service. And for some reason, this 2$ amount, Blacks seems to think they’ve tipped you good! *giggles* It sort of reminds me of when my grandmother handed me a quarter when I was 5 and sent me on my way to the penny candy store. But I figure that there is no need to feel disgruntled since the next White or Chinese or non-Black table will tip me 10$ on a 25$ ticket. It’s not required by federal law to pay employees minimum wage. Some employers can pay tipped employees less than minimum wage with the expectation that they will make up the rest of their wages in tips. The only states that are required to pay the federal minimum wage are on the pacific coast Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska, as well as Nevada, Montana, and Minnesota. Also some workers loose their minimun wage to the service they provide such as pizza delivery. With gas being nearly $4 a gallon, they can loose a lot of money during their shift. The pizza restaurant is not expected to pay for the loss in gas. The owner will simply say that “tips should cover it”. They also deceive people into being drivers by promising $12 to $18 an hour. Then you get paid minimum wage and hopefully tips boost you up to that range. Then they charge customers a $2 delivery charge and most of them think it’s a tip to the driver, but it’s not. Most places will let you know on receipts or on packaging boxes when tips are expected. Pay attention to these places. If they have in writing that tips are expected and you don’t tip, they can come after you for that tip. if you don’t want to tip, simply don’t eat from places that require one. many workers are forced to rely tips as their wages.

I believe we should do so, its a matter of choice for some and good hosts, what some people fail to realize , that some of those waitress and waiters make any where from 2.50 and up that’s starting, perhaps they chose their jobs, like the old saying someone has to do it. I don’t know about Domino’s, but as a delivery driver for Pizza Hut, I was making $6.50 an hour and the delivery charge was not my tip.

There’s cheap people black and white. There are some black people who are cheap but there’s also white people too. I’ve seen people from all race not wanting to leave a good tip. I’m tired of people who always trying to classified every situation with color. I’m sorry every race do just about the same thing.

I cannot tell everyone how frustrating it is to have black people come into a full service restaurant and no one wants to wait on them because they think odds are they will spend time serving them and not get tipped properly or at all. People in the service business depend on that money to live and pay their bills. If you are coming through the door with the attitude that you will not or should not time or don’t know what should be tipped, turn around and walk straight back out. I is like being a mechanic and a person with a damaged car is willing to pay for the supplies, but not the service because you heard or thought they were making $25 per hour, when a lot of those guys start a minimum wage. The face is people like Rick confirm what I already assumed, which is there are a gang of black people out there who need a good going over on etiquette, and personal expectation. Black folks come into a restaurant with the expectation that their order is going to be messed up and it is a self fulfilling prophecy. The reason this works out wrong is they do not know how to place an order to begin with. First off, placing an order means it need to have just that, ORDER! You cannot place an order by saying for example, “I want a Coke, and bring my daughter a small hamburger, and I want cheese stick for my appetizer, oh and me, my daughter and this person over here, are all on the same bill.” When a person is all over the map like that things have a good chance of getting messed up as expected. Order the full order for one person at a time or one category of items for all people on your bill at one time. And yes the server is tasked with keeping things in order, but as a patron who wants good-great service, it is important to do what you can to make sure things go right for you.

Also, TZFord, I tip very well _I think_ means you do not know. a good tip is 20%, an average tip is 15%, a poor tip is below 15% and a great tip is 21+%. Let the tip match the service you got, not the expectations you have. Above all know what kind of tip you are giving. Many people cannot add up a 20% tip in their head, but most phones these days not only come will a calculator, but one that does tips. And it is easy to calculate 20% just multiple your total by 10% right? then multiply that 10% by 2, now you have a 20% amount.

Justmedeb, I cannot blame you for being upset, since you truly did have a terrible waitress. On the flip side I would ask the readers to consider a few things servers go through that make some those mistakes happen. If a server takes a long time to return to the table, was the place busy, were there a lot of people at your table to be served or both? If a server asks several times “what did you say” often there is loud music blaring, loud talking, and adults want their soft spoken kids to place their own order so they can learn how and that can lead to at least one imperfection in an order. That waitress did a lot of things wrong that were based on her bad attitude, and that alone would have caused me to lower my tip amount. I have had people short me because dressing was not on the tray with the salad, so I at times felt like people were looking for an excuse not to tip.

I agree in part with the writer and that is some Black men and Women do have low self-esteem. As per tipping I only tip when the service is good. Regardless what the so called White elite may think. Whites do not realize they may call us names and may feel they are above us, however, without us there would be no rich Whites. Many Whites would be unemployed, would not have their businesses, or their homes. If we as Black’s continue to believe and allow Whites to have us believe we are subserviant to them than I can only say God wasted “his time on creating us”. I always tip. It depends on your upbringing. If you were raised to tip you do.

You cannot speak for a whole race of people. You can only speak for yourself. The majority of the black people I know have high self esteem. I tip according to how well the waiter or waitress served me. If they did such a lousy job I would not tip or leave a penny to let them know just what I felt about their service, but generally I’m a generous tipper. I’ve worked service jobs myself and those tips help you make it to your next payday.

I’m from California and nobody in that state works for less than minimum wage. I was shock when I moved to the South to find out that the service personnel in the restaurants did not get minimum wage. My cousin who had worked as a waitress explained this to me. Because of her experience she tipped generously.

I think most black people would disagree about the tipping issue. I go to a restaurant for food and in the price of the food is also the cost for the service that delivers it to me. I remember I had two ladies with me on my payday. I took them out for dinner at a restaurant I had only eaten breakfast at before. The food was so horrible that they took the food and had a food fight with it right in the restaurant. No one said nothing. I guess no one else was bold enough to express what they felt about the food.

Is that why Taxi Driver look shocked when I tip them because I’m black. I know they have to put gas in the vehicle to keep it running. I know some Taxi companies least the car to the driver for the day and the driver do not make any money until he covers the cost of the least. I do believe in tipping, and I always leave a tip. However, I do not believe that if you are not going to tip then you should stay home. What you do with your money is what you do with your money. Whether or not waitresses are making minimum wage is none of the customers concern. Servers just need to do the job they are paid to do well. If they get a tip- great, if not- oh well. Being in the service industry does not mean you are entitled to a tip. Furthermore, some waitresses do make minimum wage. It’s not up to the customer to pay the servers bills. It’s up to the customer to pay his or her bill at the restaurant, and it’s up to the restaurant to pay the server, and it’s up to the server to pay his or her own bills. Period. That is all.

In the old old old days, back when barbarians ruled the mother f**king earth, their were still forms of Restaurant, back where you would go and ask for a chicken and soup, and a pine mead(for negros who do not know that is beer). The waitresses would serve and serve and tirelessly serve and only could hope to get a single extra dollar, they got very little tip because it was perceived that it was their job and no entitlements were demanded. As a matter of fact back then businesses would work and try to support the business as so would the workers because most restaurants back then were about the community, there was no chain, there was no big business it was a small one that supported itself and the business that worked their. the moral of the story is over in Europe waiters get average or above wage, what is done here in America is a certain business ploy to keep business cost down, business earnings up and workers feeling they have no other option but to work til they die. Why should a black or anyone of any other race give tips(mind that I am black and i do tip) to support someones else life because they serve them chicken and tried to kiss as much ass as possible during that time, people at every job are mandated to give kiss ass service and take peoples bull s**t and still do it all with a smile. We give tips because we want to, we gives tips because people do above and beyond on their job, not because they did the standard thing, which i rather have the waitress with big tits and ass do versus the Justin Timberlake waiter look alike who’s slept with half the female and maybe on a drunken night a male staff(smh). So until America and its business owners get their act together and pay evenly on all scales we want have to be force to have that awkward f**ked up moment after a great meal were we look at the waitress say thank you for a meal and behind her back scramble for a decent tip, which she will probably still complain b***h and moan it was not enough, were not trying to put you through college just saying thanks with money which i have already with my mouth said thanks for serving us. I tip very well. I was once in the food service industry so I remember what it was like to have customers that were lousy tippers or didn’t tip at all. I refuse to break bread in public with anyone who who doesn’t tip or thinks it is funny to leave $1 on a $100 tap.

First of all, the majority of African American’s that eat out on a regular basis usually aren’t employed (legally) or the restaurant is it’s business around the first of the month. Uneducated and unemployed people don’t tip, because they think the waitress/waiter gets paid by the hour and “Why should I tip him, he doing his job”(Ebonics=ignorance) I actually heard someone say that. Most wait staff only make 2.75 per hour and the rest is tips. That’s why I believe, if someone gives you service, a tip should be automatically part of your bill, unless you have a complaint and refuse the tip. Once my kids and I had two waiters, and my 10 year old son ran to the back counter and gave the second waiter a tip too, because the other one took all of what we left on the table and put it in his pocket. So it’s the way you are raised too. If you can’t afford to tip, buy groceries, and cook at home.

I tip to the satisfaction of the service. In diners and restaurants, if the service was adequate, I tip 20%. It it was great, I give an extra couple of dollars, even five on top. Incompetent service minimizes the tip. Bad or intentionally neglectful service gets $1 and a lecture about customer service. I never understand why some people have a rule about not tipping. Most servers or people who work for tips make nothing at the job they’re on without the tips. They depend on it. I won’t go into an establishment unless I have money to tip. A lot of companies that say the gratuity is added don’t tell you that the gratuity is mainly what the servers get paid as well as being taxed. Saying any of this doesn’t really matter though because alot of black people still refuse to tip.

Interesting point about the self esteem. I tip and base increases of the basic tips according to service. Even if the kitchen messed up royally and the server was good, I tip the server well. Maybe some folks don’t tip because they are still on the “someone owes me something in this here USA because of all the horrid racial atrocities of the past plus that WE are paying more to basically live because of gentrification (sp?); urban edicts of paying more on home loans, car insurance etc. Because of where we live, more of us blacks are unemployed, whites get better salaries and jobs, etc., etc. , etc.

I had a taxi job and got like hundreds of tips per week. Tips became so contagious I would give the ladies or guys tips at the gas station for just remembering my cigs. They say Asians don’t tip either. Basically it comes down to each individual and their personality.

Nothing wrong with not tipping if its something you are not used to. Like I said even rich Asians are notorious with not tipping. Its just something you have to get used to in a different setting.

It’s just common coutersy to tip..and tip according to the kind of service you recieve while being reasonable.

There are only two main reasons why blacks tip less or not at all.
1.) Blacks generally receive bad service (ie; no table, bad table, slow service.. etc)
2.) Blacks generally make less money so they have less money to spend.

It’s not our fault.. it just one of those issues that whites created by originally not wanting to serve us, then after being made to serve us, they gave us crappy service and now its created a vicious cycle that continues today.

This is even being played out in our current day politics. The whites are giving the black president their butt to kiss but expect him to be generous and conciliatory.

But i have always tipped. Now their are some exceptions, i don’t tip at coffee shops, doughnut shops, fast food counters, book stores, dry cleaners, car washes… I don’t mine tipping at a sit down restaurant but I refuse to tip at McDonalds.

I figure when you order a pizza and no discount to buy Dominos or Pizza Hut or others, I pay what my order is only. Even on asian food I expect change back. Do they have to take so long or being warn some, I pay for the pizza and gas. No tip for what…. In a resturant and I see or suspect slow service I might leave none and talk to the manager.

I am a black woman, and I eat at restaurants regularly and make it a point to tip. I don’t know that black people as a group think that if someone is serving them “there must be something wrong with them” is the answer as to why “black people don’t tip.” I also think it’s way to generalizable to print an article about why a whole group of people do not tip because that is actually untrue. However, after saying that, I did go on a date with a guy who refused my attempt to pay for my own meal and said he would foot the bill. After leaving the cash the waiter came back and said that for next time tips are 15%. How incredibly embarrassing. Needless to say that was our last date.

Ok…first of all black people are over consuming (spending a lot of money) and we make non-black people become rich and powerful with our spending habit and we don’t produce anything (the majority of us don’t own and control any company to improve the financial situation of our race). And at the top of that we are suppose to leave a tips when we go on a non-black own restaurent to increase the income of non-black people in addition to to money that we are already paying to eat there? This is ridiculous! And i am sure that if white people put there feet in a black own restaurant and they refuse to give tip i am not sure that you will see an article in the news papers titled “Honkies, crackers and white European Homosapians never Tip” .

i tip those who work in the service industry arena where tips are part of the pay. these people are usually earning below minimum wages, plus tips…

pizza delivery drivers are making well above minimum wage…

the restaurant waiters and waitresses usually bust butt for a tip…but some phuck up, and for that, they don’t get tipped…not even a dollar…

one of my favorite places in Atlanta is Chops Lobster Bar. i have easily spent $200 in there on lobster meals for two…

on one occasion, i had a new waiter. i started with my usual , two, lobster tails. when they arrived, they were fried. who the phuck eats fried lobster tails…

needless to say, the waiter was not tipped that night…

Well when the economy was good being in the serving industry was a choice. They chose to be paid less the minimum wage plus tips. So guess what? I wasn’t going to tip you just because a waiter/waitress made that choice. I tipped you because you provided better service than what I get at McDonalds. I’m not going to tip you just because you took my order and brought my food I can get that any fast food place. I tip because you make sure my experience at your restaurant is great. Perfect example is how people have a favorite bar where they know the drinks are great which causes you toi tip well because you know the bartender is making sure you are having a great experience. I apply the same methodology in tipping. One of the biggest tips I gave was to a waiter who was AWESOME but the food was horrible. I tipped him more than the cost of the food because he went out of his way to keep us happy. Now I don’t expect that level of service everytime, especially not in a chain restaurant but I shouldn’t have to keep getting out of my seat to get things you are supposed to be bringing (ex. more drinks, utensils, napkins, condiments, waiter/waitress attention).

And on more personal note I have seen the difference in the level of service when serving Black vs. White people and even called people out on it. The sad thing is my words didn’t have any value until a White person confirmed the difference. Some waiters/waitresses actually believe that because they are giving the standard of service to Blacks that it is equal to higher level service they give to Whites. ITS NOT!

Some who have only recently started going out to eat in restaurants (many think that eating at Red Lobster is dining at a high class place) feel that their server is someone to vent their anger towards. They come in with attitudes, and cause the server many hard times while serving them.
Some black people feel that an evening out includes insulting the wait staff.

I have seen a couple of nice restaurants close because black people started to go to them in masses, cause all kind of issues, unwarranted trouble, and made others (including blacks) not want to come to that establishment any longer.

Many just get up and will say loudly that they are not leaving a tip, and that their food cost enough!

If you can’t afford to go out for the evening (which includes a gratuity), then stay home!

Who ever make this comment is a idiot!! its not every black people out there behave like that so when they come out and make a comment like this that saying no black people’s dont tips, they said 15% is good but i always leave 20% all the time.

I used to work as a Pizza Delivery driver up until about 2 years ago. That charge is for gas and insurance, the driver will not see that.

To all the servers out there, I appreciate what you do when I eat at your establishment I pay 15% for good service and it increases depending on how buzzed I am, BUT on the other hand, for those of you whining and complaining about our tips pay your MORTGAGE…..and we don’t understand. Well, of course I wont understand because I wouldn’t get into a field where my livelihood depends a great deal on how much in tips I get. And a lot of you all knew that before you got the job, so save me the sob story because you know the way people are this day and age, you will get some deadbeats here and there. It comes with the territory.

Now as far as “blacks” not tipping? I can’t speak on that, because I don’t represent a RACE of people. I’m one person I represent myself. “Well the other races, think less of us wahhhhh!!!” <—takes the cake, if you treat those other races the same way you treat a neighbor of yours that you don't know….I guarantee that you will sleep better as a person.

I have no problem leaving a tip when I’m in a sit down, wait staff type restaurant or when I’m having food delivered, tip more during bad weather and tip in cash even when I’ve paid for my order with my credit card. However, I had a bad experience with a Chinese restaurant in my area, the driver automatically added in a dollar tip when he arrived and threw away the receipt before getting to my door. I caught on after two deliveries and the driver loudly saying “What, no tip?) so I called the restaurant to complain; that driver never delivered to my door again, I never had a problem again and I was told to call before paying while the driver was standing there if I ever questioned the amount.

I work hard for my money and while I appreciate that other people do too, particularly those in the food industry, I will not allow anyone to demand that I give them a tip, which is why I don’t like the tip calculator that was developed to tell people how much they should tip and I also hate that some restaurants add a tip to the bill after certain hours, sure they tell you they are doing it with all the posted signs, but it’s still quite nervy of them to do it.

In this economy I’m doing more cooking at home so I have less concern about tipping anyone. Now if only I could get my family to tip me for cooking, cleaning, laundry, chauffeur services, etc. Wonder if I can give them an itemized bill? Wonder if they’ll pay up (my kids will no doubt opt for spiritual money) and my honey will no doubt run some “woman’s work” speech or do his own cooking, cleaning and laundry, but let’s face it there’s some things he can’t do as well by himself…. I’m just sayin’

As for pizza drivers tzford …I don’t know where you live but the cost of a pizza, pick-up or delivered is the same, that extra charge is not a tip, does not go to the driver. That is a fuel charge of $1-$1.5 if they are using a comapany car, that doesn’t go to the driver. And if the driver is using their own car they get nothing.

Wait a minute… Why in who in the hell said black people don’t tip? Now this is sad.. Because whenever I
m receiveing am receiving a service I certainly have enough sense and money to know you should tip your server… The bottomline, who ever said black folks don’t tip is a liar.. Point blank period…

what a racist article. Philadelphia has the best tippers a very large majority Black city. I work with lots of white female waitresses who say that Black people are the best tippers. Anything to get people to read your article. Oh! that’s right, we don’t read either. This is comical at best.

In some restaurants the tip is included in the bill and is usually 15% of the bill. In some restaurants where you have to pay at the register, you’re given the option of paying a tip or not.
I prefer to pay a tip ’cause waiting on some people can be a pain.
However, you’d be surprised at the number of whites that don’t pay any tip at all. I’ve seen that many, many times. It’s funny how whites do ugly things and get away with it, but if we’re not perfect, the imperfection becomes a part of our culture. I often wonder why we accept this just as we accept the “N” word, but are criticized when we say kkkrakkka, leper, pale face, etc.

If you can’t afford to tip the waiter at least 15%, then you can’t afford to be eating out.

Oh & I didn’t know that blacks don’t tip, I had just heard it was teenagers who didn’t tip. Good to know.

Really Seriously why does this even have to be an issue or a comment to catargorize all black people. First and foremost not only do I tip and tip above what is required especially if my grandkids leave a messy table. My kids tip also because it shows the appreciation of how hard a person works to service you. I am so sick of a black and white thing and mainly it’s black people stereotypeing themselves. How funny:)

The correlation between black people “not tipping” and having low self esteem is lacking. Meaning it’s full of bs. I’ve never met a black person that didn’t tip. The reason they/ I tip because there is an understanding about the service/ job and what the person is getting paid. Waiters get paid close to nothing considering how hard they work. I’ve met people from many other races that don’t tip because “it’s their job; they’re doing what they are suppose to do so why should I have to pay extra.”

Once again, BP is posting an article that isn’t well researched and puts us down. So sad.

We tip when the customer service is right. That’s just natural. No matter if it’s a dollar per person or ten dollars per person. Blacks don’t make that much money to be throwing it around talking about big tips. White people do think that they are Gods or some powerful being. In my opinion God is the only one with power. I disagree with the Blk people believing etc. Me personally, I will give a tip to anyone of any race who does a good job, regardless if it’s just dining in or the drive-thru, but I will not give a big tip at a fancy restaurant because anything less than $10 or $20 ain’t nothing to them.
