Listen everyone… this video is being horrifically taken out of it’s original context. This Turkish anchor isn’t AT ALL dangling racism over the heads of anyone. In America (between the early 1800′s and early 1900′s), the blackface was theatrical makeup worn in minstrel shows to portray African Americans in a buffoonish and degrading manner; HOWEVER, in Turkey, painting a face black is in relation to a Turkish proverb (in which this anchor explains in the video [although he slightly misstated the proverb]). The Turkish proverb states ‘Isteyenin bir yuzu kara, vermeyenin iki yuzu’ which means: the one who asks has one side of his face dark; the one who refuses to give has both sides. So, painting the face black is used to put shame to the side that can give but refuses to do so. But, even though this Turkish anchor didn’t represent the proverb to the full extent… he only painted his face black because he was the one making a request to President Obama. If anyone is still at a misunderstanding, please educate yourselves before you decide to make foolish comments because it just shows your stupidity. And, I don’t at all mean that in a condescending manner. And, the writer of this blog should have done his research before posting this as well. I’m Turkish, and let me explain a few things to you. This is not racist AT ALL in Turkey. Think about that; is painting your face totally white racist in Japan? They do it all the time, but it is not racist. So try to think of it in those terms.
If anything though, Turks are the least racist against black people. In fact, there is no such thing as racism; there were black pashas (prime ministers) in the Turkish Ottoman Empire even like 500 years ago. There were black governors everywhere in the empire. Black people lived in Turkish dominant places, too. And come to think of it; Turks don’t even know what “race” is, so nothing like this could be racist or insulting. We ourselves are from a number of different races: Asian, European, ancient Anatolian, black, etc. Turkey is a mix of everything; it is the first melting spot of the world, and these things are just not considered bad.
I mean it might look insulting when looked from the USA, but think about it, why would painting one’s face black be considered insulting to black people as long as blackness is not considered bad, and it is NOT, and it NEVER was in the case of Turkey. If anything, black people are considered to be cool, and we Turks really LOVE you guys.
But I agree that the reporter is too dumb, because he is a reporter and he should have taken into account sentiments in other countries. It is true that this (or if he painted his face white) is not considered insulting in Turkey, but it could be in other countries and thus, he should have taken it into account.

Not because I think this is insulting or racist (coz it really is NOT at all), but because that stupid reporter and his stupid TV company (which is not a very well known one in Turkey, one of hundreds of something TV stations) should have done their research. Coz we Turks immediately get angry when someone says something that could be insulting to us in our culture even if it is not in your culture. Now, we do the same in a sense, so it is a shame that they didnt do their research, and offended a population that would probably be the last that Turks would like to offend. I mean, blacks would probably rank among the top among people we love there (but not as a race; like I said below, the concept of race there in Turkey is different, ‘black’ to us is someone who is black, and is not someone who comes from a different race.) To Turks, race is more like nationality; what matters is whether someone is Turk or not, and one can be a Turk as long as he/she likes this country and identifies with Turks. Other things are differences in appearance, and does not mean anything.

As some of you have noted, I’d like to know what was actually said during the news report before commenting on ‘racism.’ It is easy to take things out of context when we have no clue as to what is being said (and even when we think we do know what is being said!!). Add to that a cultural nuance from another country and you’ve got a recipe for some nasty misunderstandings.

Folks, a lot of people both at home and around the world are going to be ignorant, mean, racist, (etc) when it comes to us, our skin and our culture…so maybe we ought to really think about which battles we choose to wage. Anyway, sometimes jumping on posts WE consider to be racist without considering the possibility that they may not be says more about us and the racial insecurities we hold than about those who are actually doing the posting. I was raised by great parents to be a strong, proud Black woman…so I can honestly say that I feel racially inferior to no one. Of course, there are people out there who try to get underneath my skin; but it has grown as thick as my curves!! (Ladies…thought you would get a kick out of that one!!).

Blacks are viewed in a negative light. This is due in part to the media and movie industry’s portrayal of us. Don’t get it confused racism is everywhere. I am romantically involved with a woman that is from Europe and despite the fact the blacks aren’t as anywhere near as populous as whites there there is still racism. Furthermore, with the plethora of infromation that is at our disposal I’m almost certain that someone in that news station (which does eerily resemble San Fran) could have researched “blackface” in Wikipedia and examined the ramifications of such an action. Granted in some parts of the world it’s not as serious (Japan-Ganguro and Netherland-Schwarze Pite or Black Pete, or their verision of St. Nicholas , a Turkish saint a.k.a. Santa Claus) but he did this to commemorate the arrival of President of the United States. On a news broadcast, no less. My question is this: Has he or would he don the same apparel and adornment if some of the African, Latin American, Oceanic or southeast Asian leers would pay a visit? Maybe I’m wrong.ornot. This was insensitive, thoughtless, and not in the least bit amusing. Oh yeah, and only about 15-20% of Turkey is in Europe. Again….We have a case of negeative behaviour from a country that we have literally fed over the years. We need to educate people of all countries about how “black” people in the U.S. prefer to be treated. Of course he is being disrespectful. Why else would he do it? I learned something last year from a military associate I never knew, Black men in the military that spend time in Turkey are warned to take EXTREME CAUTION while there. I am Turkish, and this is the second time I am making a comment here.

First of all, like I said before, noone should take this as an offense! The last people who would be racist and insulting to blacks would really be Turks. And unlike what ignorant poster shango24 said, it was the Turkish Ottoman Empire which gave the most rights to the black first in history. There was no difference at the Ottoman times between a black and a non-black; we had MANY black pashas (prime ministers) at the time of the Ottomans!!! Blacks had equal rights as with everyone else. That dumbass shango24 should understand that Ottoman Turkey is a Turkish country, and is different from Arabs; Arabs could have been bad to blacks, I have no idea if they did or not, but for the Turks (including the Ottoman Empire), a black person was always equal to any other citizens of the empire, and Arabs were also our citizens (again I have no idea how they treated blacks in their own countries, but in Ottoman Turkey (or in today’s Turkey), blacks have always been equal to non-blacks, whether they are whites, Asians, etc.

We, in Turkey, love black people, and we really love the new president Obama. Obama will sure (and has already) increased USA’s popularity perhaps 100 times in just a couple of weeks here in Turkey.

We also love black people. Like I explained in my previous comment, we Turks have no idea of race like it is in USA or Western Europe. To us, race = nationality. So anyone could be a Turk, as long as they love this country and identify with Turks and live in Turkey. So a black who lives in Turkey, to us, has the same race as a white or Asian looking Turk; the difference lies only in appearance, in terms of how darker you are than each other, that’s it. I hope you can see this? We really don’t feel like we have different races, we just feel that race equals nationality, and that differences lie in appearance.

Come to think of it! Turkey is such a diverse country. It was the melting pot of hundereds of years ago, the first and the most important melting pot in history. Our race (in the American sense) is a mix of everything: We have white, black, Asian, etc. every type of blood; we don’t belong to a specific race in the sense of current classification of races, and we don’t hate any specific race, though we dislike certain “countries” such as France.

In any case, Turks love blacks, and we do think that blacks are nice and “cool” people, and we don’t view them different from ourselves, in fact, we feel probably more solidarity with blacks than whites (and again, whether we look more white or Asian, black, etc., we just feel our race is Turkish).

Oh I also forgot to mention! I, as a Turk, also got offended by the behavior of this reporter, nut not because it is insulting to blacks (in Turkey, this wouldnt be considered insulting at all; think about it, why would it be thought of as insulting, intrinsicly speaking? Turkey has no history like USA, in Turkish history, there were many black pashas (prime ministers) even, and one can paint his face black, white, etc. neither is insulting). The reason I feel offended is because the reporter and his stupid TV company (which is not a very well known one, just one of hundreds or so companies) should have done their research!!! And they should have learnt what is considered offending and what is not for Americans!!!

So my black bros, plz ignore this stupid reporter; we love you, and we love your new black president Obama! I would say the support for USA increased from like 6% to 80% with Obama. All newspapers, TVs, and even normal people had very positive views of Obama, and actually this stupid reporter had too; he also had positive comments; he just didn’t take into account that something that is not offensive in Turkey could be offensive in other countries.

IMO, the Turkish broadcast was in very poor taste. However, the Japanese broadcast was no different than the SNL skits that since its inception, has humorously (or not) made fun of both black and white politicians. Plus the guy was a pretty good magician.

Who really cares? I can’t understand what the F–k he is saying anyway and furthermore, he looks down right ignorant and stupid just like a crazy TURK. It is nothing like SNL.

In reading & watching this video, it just goes to show that the world still has deep issues that they let effect themselves. I have to pray for people that are ignorant enough to believe that they can take a “power” from black people and “weaken” them to their standards.
To know that this is an adult doing such an ugly deed just goes to show how instilled racisim was for him.
I am just very thankful that we have President Obama who does not lower himself to levels of this type of thing, He gave no reaction when he was running and does not give any now. Not only does he stand as president, but he shows that he will not be lowered to ignorance. People who are placed here to hate have deep seeded issues that they deal with from inside. They tend to overlook the fact that they hurt no one but themsleves.No matter what is done to try and lower President Obama he will continue to be president to us all.

Thank you to Turk11. Some of us Americans get things mixed up when we believe that all non people of color world wide feel the same way about black people as some do in America. The unfortunate thing is that something so harmless was reported as something negative. I don’t even know what the reporter is saying. It’s like understanding that normal American hand gestures may be offensive in other countries unbeknownst to us.
For us to be the leaders of the world, we are very sheltered when it comes to other countries and what their thoughts and social norms are. Let’s get educated shall we. It’s like when people ask Africans do they own lions or wear clothes…are you serious?

All we know about it from movies and we always have sympathy towards people of color. Those of you who went to Turkey would know better.
Most of you would like to know what they r saying in the show, well..Even though they have silly way of showing it, they r actually giving some crucial political messages and he does that by using well-known turkish idiom. Based on the idiom when you ask something from someone you blush, if that person doesn’t give it to you, that person blushes even more. It is hard to explain in english but when we say blush we are talking about your face getting darker, but it doesn’t refer to black people, there is no black people in Turkey and reporter says over and over again that he doesn’t want to offend anyone. So i believe it was totally culturel misunderstanding.
Obama visited Turkey because USA needs Turkey’s help when it comes to Afghanistan and problems with other muslim countries. And Turkey says “we will help you with that but we need your support with some of the issues such as IMF, Armenian Genocide and terrorist group PKK.” Thats what he is saying, but again they shouldn’t have done it that way. It doesn’t give them right to offend anyone and it doesn’t give them right to rep my country like we are insensitive people to the rest of the world.
This TV channel is local, they probably didnt think people in USA will watch this and get offended. But as a Tv channel, they should be more aware and i have couple of things to say to that channel too.
I believe Obama is one of the best thing happen to this country. I have faith in him so do my other Turkish friends. Ever since i came to this country i have so many quality friendships with people of color and they r very noble and loving people. Thats why i always feel comfortable and connected.
