Boricua, I am totally with you. I hate it when they say Barack Obama is the first BLACK president – he’s not. I have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING against him, (I love him and think he will be great as president) but I think whenever they say that, they’re dismissing half of who he is. He is HALF WHITE AND HALF BLACK. I wonder what his white mother and grandparents would think when people say he’s fully black. I just think it’s kind of disrespectful. And to ajyant1, I think your using the phrase, ”our struggle” to mean the whole African American’s struggle with slavery and everything, but just like several other people said, not every African American picked cotton.

The most I have to say is everyone has their own mind. People before us blacks was blacks. To break it down for you the USA is a great big melting pot. Yes when you look at your skin you are black,but im pretty sure you have indian, white,ect, in you.In Africa we are not consider afrians. I met an jamacian and he called me an cracker, mixed breed and ect. What im saying is check your history before you really try to get to deep. what we know of ourselves was given to us by our slave masters……the hardest thing to conceptualize, is this captivity…..are we truly free or have we just been given better jobs …..

when the slaves were “freed” they ran to Kansas, ending up in a worse captivity than the first…. They didn’t know where to go or what it was like to be free….they are our ancestors, we are their children…..and still have no clue what it is to be free…

where would one who is free live….would one who considers himself free, live anywhere, in the lands of captivity…or would they go back home>?

Has anyone posting on this subject of who’s African, African American, Black, a combination, etc; traced their own lineage back to slavery? Can anyone truly state that you have proof of slave origin in your family? Do some research, learn “yourstory” it makes all the difference in the world. And it wasn’t just a rule, the one drop thing, it is law.

I am black like midnight, learned at grandma’s knee all about our families plight. Don’t have no hate or shame, proud to know how we got the massahs name. Took his misconceptions and turned them into perceptions of a productive future. The days of American slavery are long past, but the evidence of its presence will always last. Let us not forget that we are still considered endangered learn your history or to self always be a stranger.

I don’t understand why african americans or blacks focus on this
whites vs blacks thing! we as blacks should educate ourselves and stop beig frustrated because of slavery. in fact our proudness should come out of the fact that black americans were once upon a time slaves in this country and we have now emerged to have the same opportunities with other races.another thing why do we call ourselves african americans? is that not another type of segregation towards our african brothers? what do we call them? are we different from them? surely no for we are all blacks.Obama is not african -american if the meaning of such a thing is to be descendent of slaves, he is simply american and all citizens of this country should be called americans and be proud of it. I am proud that an African is the president of the USA. The image that is now set for Africans are enormous. Loved the slideshow. I am very proud that my president is who he is, I am happy that I lived long enough to see it. I would hear stories as a child about(what if we had a black president?) and look has happened….joy filled my heart the night I found out, and for some reason I still carry that joy around me everyday, it’s the joy that no one can take from you!……The First Black Family. So this cut about from the slave house to the white house is not working for African-Americans who are the True Descendants of the Slave. No disrespect to Mr. Obama, he is not trying to claim this very significant heritage that you can only be born into. Yes it is wonderful that he sits in the highest seat in all the land, he has a job to do. How it will change or assist the lives of African-Americans we don’t know, we’ll need to wait and see.
