What do Chris Brown, Alex Rodriguez and the New York Post have in common? All three gave half-apologies this week for huge ethical and moral transgressions.

In the case of the New York Post, it is not enough to say, in effect, “We didn’t mean it the way you thought we meant it, and if you got us wrong, we’re sorry. And, by the way, we do not apologize to Al Sharpton, or anyone with the temerity to speak on your behalf.”

This is what a real apology might look like: “Americans of all colors, we sincerely apologize for the cartoon we ran. We were wrong to not consider the historically racist implications of the imagery we used, and racism — whether deliberate, implied or by mistake — is unacceptable. We completely understand the anger and outrage that many Americans feel, and we honor their right to speak out.”

We at NewsOne feel that as long as the New York Post holds the concerns, safety and well-being of African-Americans in contempt, it is important not to buy the New York Post, nor visit their website.

We, the members of BlackPlanet.com, the world’s largest online community for African-Americans and people of African descent everywhere, are outraged at the recent publication of a racist cartoon in the pages of the New York Post, a daily newspaper owned and operated by one of the largest media corporations in the world, News Corporation.

The cartoon, created by Sean Delonas, depicts a dead chimpanzee, just shot dead by two white police officers who exclaim: “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

According to the editors at the Post, this cartoon plays off the recent, sensationalized shooting of an actual chimpanzee in Connecticut.

But given that this cartoon is displayed one page after a picture of President Barack Obama; given the random connection made to Obama’s recently-signed economic stimulus plan; given the editorial animosity of the New York Post to Obama; and given the racist, bigoted history of the cartoonist, Mr. Delonas; it’s very easy to infer that the Post and the cartoonist are likening American’s first Black president to an ape.

The African-ape comparison is unconscionable, a centuries’ old cliche, a favorite of white supremacists everywhere.  So, too, is the threat of police violence and brutality against African-Americans. So, for that matter, is the specter of assassination of an American president. And whether the editors and cartoonists meant to make these comparisons, or were merely comfortable riding the edge, we declare that this is inexcusable, intolerable conduct in a multicultural society.

The New York Post and Mr. Delonas are entitled to their “free speech.”  We are also entitled to protest, with our voices, our bodies and our pocketbooks, if necessary.

The era for this kind of “humor” has passed. We stand alongside well-meaning Americans of all races and ethnicities to condemn this cynical, backward, racist cartoon, and its publisher.

We demand an apology from the News Corporation and the New York Post.

    I believe the purpose of the cartoon was to stir controversy. However, I believe in the new era that we are in the landscape where racism has changed. I don’t think it was intent to be offensive to a particular race and ironically this is coming from someone who is quick to jump on someone’s case when I see something going on!!!!

    I’m sorry, but the African-American community is way too sensitive. They show pictures of Bush as a monkey, a donkey, Hilary Clinton’s feces with his face on it…..but no one is protesting those cartoonist. Plus, if I am correct, they were talking about how the congress are a bunch of monkeys. Would this be any different if they shot a donkey that represent the the Democratic party???     It is not sad anymore that we have to put up with the witty thoughts of those who dislike us because of our skin color. Many times I have asked myself why do we dislike our ownselves and never have I came up with an answer that would satisfy my enslaved mind. The only thing I can think of is the fact that we have been taught to hate each other.

    It saddens me to think that we are still trying to pick out all the things that make us inferior to other races. This is the BLACK PLANET and there has never been such in the galaxies of mankind so I would think that instead of us finding more ways to hurt our futures we should only post things that will uplift and motivate us to always be better than those who only want us to fail. We should support those who uplift the minds of children and young adults. We should only publish things that will show that we can destroy this evil devil that has wanted to see us lying down with him in hell.

    I find it awfully ironic that a website by the name of Blackplanet is arguing in the name of multiculturalism.     This Petition is ridiculous and is an affront to freedom of speech. I find more offensive material here on Black Planet than on the The New York Post. I think it time that we stop getting diverted by Stupid things and focus on improving our condition. Many people would haven’t even know about the post cartoon. Now you are helping increase the circulation. Understand clearly that when you open the door for censorship you open it to come back at you. It is okay for people to have contrary opinions. It’s okay for people not to like you. That’s their problem. You don’t have to make it yours.
    I have a lot of respect for Al Sharpton but it my belief that this is just a publicity stunt. And those “Black Leaders” who supporting this waste of time and effort are truly agents of the enemy of Black People.

    Let’s keep our eyes on the prize. I doubt President Obama is bothered one bit by this ridiculous cartoon. I doubt he believes that he in any way resembles a monkey. The reality is that the NY Post probably allowed the ad to run because they wanted to get the specific reaction we gave. The more we talk about it, protest about it, the more papers and online advertisements they sell. It’s sad, but it equates to a marketing stunt. In all actuality, President Obama did not draft the stimulus bill. It was drafted by house democrates. Many republicans and democrats alike believe strongly that the bill has some serious infirmities. I don’t happen to believe that since some very reputable Democrats like Former president Clinton support the bill in general. I have not read it and neither have many of the dems that signed off on it. We have to hope that the stimulus bill does some good, but there is no single solution to the economic problem we have. Many people strongly disagree with the bill and would believe that it may have as well been drafted by monkeys. i think that was the tone of the cartoon, but I do believe the Post welcomed the outrage.

The white boy who did it said he was mad because the night before a black ref made a bad call in an NFL game. The white boy didnt even get charged with 1st or second degree murder. they gave him like 40 years. They said in the ruling that (mostly white jury) he had the intent of shooting someone but not to kill them. well i dont know about you but if you put your hunting rifle in your car, drink some liquor, drive all the way across town, post up about 100 yards from the drive thru. look through your scope on your Deer rifle and shoot a young black woman in the base of the skull…Yeah i can see where it wasnt murder how about you?!?! My distain for whites is quite great about this time i must say. So i say the the cracker that did the cartoon should be drawn and quartered.

We have police gunning down individuals in our community, we have one of the highest rates of unemployment and people on government assistance, we have the highest rates of incarcerated men… the list could go on and on. If a black man or black publication had made the cartoon biasing a white man, would we be in an uproar then? Anything that hinders us as a community is worth looking at. Everytime I turn around I hear someone saying “We need to come up as a black people” And these are the same people saying that we need to get over this racist s**t. We have to stop referring to ourselves as blacks, whites, latino, or asians and just be PEOPLE! We have TOO MUCH pride in ourselves to get anywhere. Everyone wants to be the superior race which is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN! God said it himself…we have to be HUMBLE!     Wow…this is still a hot topic? Over a cartoon? Wrong as it may be, he is guaranteed the right to say or draw as much filth as he wants by the first amendment. So get over it already! Even if you take him down, there will always be someone else because that is just the world we live in. Hmmm…let’s start a petition about the education of some of our black children who probably will have to resort to looking at cartoons and recognizing shapes and colors because they can’t read to understand anything else.     1st of all.. i will say that the cartoon was in bad taste but if anyone knows how our government is run you would know that the country’s laws are not written by the president but by congress. This isn’t about race its about intelligence.     The material of this produced content is indeed congruent towards reality also the manipulation of the symbolism in the content field is not designed with respects to keep the black community in mind. It is quite clear that rascism may not have been intended, but it is also lucidly clear there was not any sensitivity in regards to the history of “White America” & “black America”.
