Soul Train, the longest running show in television history known for its dance lines and urban performances is no longer on the air.

On Monday, Sharpton said that he has indeed spoken out about Cain — but from a different place than O’Reilly.

“I’ve spoken on any number of platforms about his inconsistencies,” he said. “…Bill O’Reilly’s problem is that I’m not saying what he wants me to say about Mr. Cain. Not that I’m not speaking, it’s that I’m not singing Mr. O’Reilly’s song. Maybe he should check with me before he asks me to say something, because I am speaking, Bill. I’m just not letting you write the words.”

5. Bill O’Reilly

Bill O’Reilly was charged with sexual harassment and sued for $60 million in 2004 by former producer for The O’Reilly Factor Andrea Mackris. Mackris would claim that O’Reilly would sexually harass her and make crude comments about masturbation, threesomes, and Caribbean shower fantasies.

She would later settle out of court for an undisclosed amount of money.

4. Bill Clinton

While Bill Clinton was running for president in 1991, Paula Jones, a former Arkansas state employee claimed that Clinton pulled down his pants and asked her for oral sex in a hotel room.

Clinton would wind up paying Jones just under one million dollars, despite never admitting guilt just to keep her quiet.

3. Mark Foley

Mark Foley was a Republican congressman from Florida who was also the chairman of the House Caucus on Missing and Exploited Children.

Foley became infamous as the first politician caught up in the Internet era of sexual harassment scandals. He was caught sending emails to male congressional pages asking for fellatio and pictures of their penises. He would also send sexually explicit instant messages to young males.

Foley would later enter rehab and claim that he was molested himself.

2. Britney Spears

Britney Spears was sued by former bodyguard Fernando Flores for sexual harassment. Flores would claim that Spears made unwanted sexual advances to him, exposed her private parts to him on numerous occasions, and said that she would abuse her children numerous times.

Spears’ attorney accused the bodyguard of “trying to cash in on Ms. Spears’ celebrity by making salacious claims of misconduct.”

1. Clarence Thomas

When Clarence Thomas was nominated to the Supreme Court by former president George H.W. Bush, old allegations of sexual harassment were levied upon him from an attorney who worked for him at the Department Of Education. The woman’s name was Anita Hill.

Hill was called to Senate to testify and said that Thomas made comments about group sex, rape, bestiality, and bragged about his anatomy and sexual prowess to her. She also said he once asked, “Who put a pubic hair on my Coke?”

Thomas was later confirmed despite Hill’s testimony.

O’Reilly believes that people bare a personal responsibility for their own poverty, while West and Smiley argued about the government factors that contribute to it.

NPR fired Williams last year for comments he made about Muslims on Fox News.

“They would label you as a bad guy for saying, you know what, there are extremists in the Muslim community who pose a worldwide threat,” he said.

O’Reilly criticized the New York Times for calling Breivik a “Christian terrorist” in an article. Breivik described himself as a Christian, as did the Norwegian police.

Nonetheless, O’Reilly wasn’t buying it.

“No one believing in Jesus commits mass murder,” he said. “The man might have called himself a Christian on the net, but he is certainly not of that faith…we can find no evidence, none, that this killer practiced Christianity in any way.”

The first time Media Matters unveiled a leaked e-mail from Bill Sammon, Fox News’ Washington managing editor, it was hardly worthy of mention. On Dec. 9 the group’s website revealed that Sammon had instructed reporters to avoid the phrase “public option” when referring to a proposed government-sponsored healthcare plan. The memo, sent out on Oct. 27, 2009, when debate over the Democratic healthcare bill was raging in Congress, came two months after Republican pollster Frank Luntz had appeared on Hannity’s show and encouraged him to use the phrase “government option” instead, because such terminology decreased public support for the proposal. “Please use the term ‘government-run health insurance’ or, when brevity is a concern, ‘government option’ whenever possible,” Sammon told reporters.

Liberal bloggers were furious, but few mainstream journalists could muster much outrage. Arguments over semantics and perceived bias are commonplace and seldom fruitful. “Government option” is no less valid a descriptor for the proposal than the more commonly used “public option,” and if Fox News was demonstrating bias by using the former, one could accuse mainstream outlets of the same for using the latter.

Alec Baldwin is very funny on “30 Rock,” but he has a serious side as well. After having some issues with his daughter, Baldwin decided to leave a very angry voicemail on her answering machine. Family, anger and voicemails are never a good combination. He threatens to straighten her out and calls he a rude thoughtless little pig, despite the fact that she is only 12 years old(he thinks).

Michael Richards like many of the fellow celebrity ranters like’s to use the n-word when he is angry yet says he’s not a racist. After bombing at a a comedy show and being heckled by some African Americans, the actor known for playing the fun loving eccentric character, Kramer, on “Seinfeld” went on an n-word laced rant.

Bill O’Reilly had Dr. Marc Lamont Hill as a guest on his show and they were discussing President Barack Obama’s plan to bring 1,200 troops to the Mexican border. O’Reilly then brought up the issue of drugs and told Dr. Hill that he looked like he sold cocaine.

Hundreds of officials and influential leaders are participating in an annual national convention hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network, which began Wednesday morning.

The four-day conference will feature prominent names in politics, civil rights, religion, business, education and entertainment addressing issues that impact people of color with a priority on racial inequality. Topics include health care, the racial achievement gap, labor and employment, the state of the Black Church, and others.

“We often teach our children, that the only way to garner change and advance society is to eliminate discrepancies in the social order of life,” Sharpton wrote in an online statement. “When there is equality across racial and class lines, we all benefit.”

The major highlight of the convention is a leadership forum on the concluding day, “Measuring the Movement: Black Leadership’s 12-Month Action Plan,” where leaders representing constituencies across the county will pledge a plan of action to affect change regarding these issues over a 12-month period. This event will air live on TV One, and a special hosted by Joe Scarborough will air on MSNBC.

Al Sharpton Calls Meeting Of Black Leaders To Discuss Gov. Paterson

Fox News host Bill O’Reilly was booed at Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network Convention in New York on Wednesday, when the TV personality insisted race is no longer a “real” issue, and told the crowd, “It’s time to drop the race stuff.”

O’Reilly didn’t stop there. He continued by saying “Black people need to stop playing the race card.” At one point, Rev. Sharpton turned to the audience and jokingly said “You can boo that one…” encouraging the crowd to express their discontent with O’Reilly’s comments.

In an effort to calm a noticeably tense crowd, O’Reilly praised President Obama for not using race to further his own agenda. The O’Reilly factor host also thought it was necessary to defend Tea Partiers by saying “a few bad apples shouldn’t ruin the bunch.”

In a comparison likely to offend both parties, Fox News host Bill O’Reilly compared the South Side of Chicago to Haiti during a January 23rd stop on his “Bold Fresh Tour,” accompanied by Glenn Beck.

President Obama is constantly pushing government as the solution to every problem, O’Reilly argued, despite there being no evidence to support this idea:

And I’m going, I don’t know how that’s possible. If you’ve ever been to the South Side of Chicago, I mean, it’s a disaster. Alright? It’s like Haiti. it’s like — I’ve been to Haiti a couple times, and I support some charities there, but Haiti just never gets better no matter how much money you put in there because they don’t have a system.

In 2004 (back when leaked sex tapes were still a surprise) Paris Hilton’s ex-boyfriend Rick Salomon released footage of the pair having intimate relations. Hilton sued Salomon for making the tape public, but eventually settled out of court. The video, entitled “1 Night in Paris,” went on to claim the title of most rented release of 2005 and catapulted Paris Hilton’s already undeserved fame to even greater heights.

9 – Bill O’Reilly Sued For Sexual Harassment

A former producer of his show sued Bill O’Reilly for sexual harassment in 2004, alleging that he spoke to her about sexual fantasies, masturbation, and vibrators while sometimes seeming to pleasure himself. O’Reilly countersued for extortion, and the case was eventually settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy!

8 – Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Caught Exchanging Explicit Text Messages With Staffer

Sexting: Not just for tweens anymore. In early 2008 the Detroit Free Press revealed the existence of more than 14,000 text messages between Kilpatrick and his chief of staff Christine Beatty. Kilpatrick and Beatty, both married to other people at the time, used their city-issued phones to communicate in graphic detail about about their affair. This, combined with Kilpatrick’s many legal troubles, led him to step down as mayor. For his other crimes – including obstruction of justice and assaulting a police officer – he faces 120 days in prison and 5 years of probation. Not sexy.

7 – Nipplegate

During the halftime show for Super Bowl XXXVIII in February of 2004, Justin Timberlake sang “I’m gonna have ya naked by the end of this song” during his duet with Janet Jackson. Apparently he meant it, because when he ripped off part of her bodice, Janet’s breast was revealed to the world (except for a strategically covered nipple). Nipplegate gave us the term “wardrobe malfunction,” and MTV, which co-produced the show alongside CBS, was banned from ever producing a halftime show again. To top it all off, CBS was fined a record $550,000 for indecency by the FCC.

6 – Mark Sanford “Hikes The Appalachian Trail”

The South Carolina governor had not been seen in public for some time in mid-2009 when his staff told media outlets Sanford was “hiking on the Appalachian Trail.” Apparently by “hiking” they meant “visiting his ‘soul mate’ Argentinian mistress.” An honest mistake, we’re sure.  Sanford’s infidelity was ultimately exposed, leading him to apologize during a rambling, teary-eyed press conference. Flying in the face the political wives’ “stand by your man” code of honor, Jenny Sanford has since filed for divorce.

5 – Tiger Woods Cheats On His Wife … A Lot

A late-night car accident over Thanksgiving weekend 2009 drew intense media scrutiny, leading to the revelation that Tiger had cheated on wife Elin with 14 different women (and counting). With all that’s been written about the golfer lately, there isn’t a whole lot left to say to Tiger except … C’mon son!

4 – Larry Craig “Has A Wide Stance” In Airport Bathroom

Craig was arrested in 2007 for lewd conduct when he sought sex from a male undercover officer in a Minneapolis airport bathroom using well-known solicitation signals. Craig insisted upon his innocence, stating that he merely had a “wide stance” and that he had been picking up a piece of paper from the floor. This was of course the same Larry Craig who in 1989 pushed for more severe punishment of Representative Barney Frank for his involvement in a gay prostitution scandal.

3 – R. Kelly Charged With Child Pornography

R. Kelly has been roiled by several sex scandals. In 1995, he reportedly married the then 15-year-old Aaliyah, for whom he was a songwriter. The marriage was ultimately annulled, but that wasn’t the last we heard of Kelly’s alleged affinity for the Miley Cyrus set. In 2002, he was indicted on several counts of child pornography after a video was released of a man – purported to be him – having sex with an underage girl. His case finally went to trial in 2008, with the jury ruling Kelly not guilty on all 14 counts. The ill-advisedly self-described “Pied Piper of R&B” has since gone on to make more hit music, apparently forgiven by all his fans.

2 – Kobe Bryant Accused Of Rape

In the summer of 2003 NBA superstar Kobe Bryant was arrested for the rape of a 19-year old hotel employee in Colorado. Bryant admitted to an adulterous sexual encounter with his accuser, but denied the assault allegation. The case was dropped after the accuser declined to testify in the trial, and a civil suit was settled out of court. Kobe lost several endorsement deals, but was able purchase his wife’s forgiveness with a $4 million diamond ring. Basketball fans are also back on his side thanks to his role in leading the Lakers to an NBA Championship in 2009.

1 – Priests In Catholic Church Sexually Abuse Young Boys

In 2001, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops commissioned a study that found that four percent of all priests who served in the U.S. from 1950 to 2002 faced some sort of sexual misconduct accusation. The Church was criticized when it emerged that some bishops had known about abuse allegations and failed to report them to police, instead merely reassigning accused priests. There are obviously about a million things wrong with this entire situation, but the sheer number of people affected and the church’s supposed position as a moral beacon combine to make this the biggest and most shocking sex scandal of the decade.

Bill O’Reilly believes that the US effort to win the popular support of Muslims around the world is based on the notion that the US cannot kill every single Muslim. There are roughly 1.3-1.5 billion followers of Islam worldwide.

O’Reilly brought this up during a discussion Tuesday evening about alleged Fort Hood gunman Nidal Hasan. The Fox News host was discussing the alleged attack with novelist and retired Lt. Col. Ralph Peters who was “outraged” that Obama did not refer to the attack as terrorism during his speech at Tuesday’s memorial service.

I deliberately use the word black rather than the words African American. The latter lacks the proper emotional value. It is cultural and geographical. The former is visceral. Bigotry is not subtle. It is primal. It is not about ideas. It is irrational.

He is smarter and more educated and more articulate than they. A self-made man, he represents everything they would claim to value. But he looks different, to them. They hate him because he looks different. They hate him because he is dark. In “Western” “Culture,” the very words black and dark have powerfully negative value. They often are used as synonyms for the sinister.

They hated President Clinton, and tried to destroy him. But one of their elected governors didn’t talk secession. They didn’t talk revolution. They didn’t attempt (and miserably fail) to launch nationwide protests against him. Bill Clinton was a lot of things. He was not black.

President Obama is no crazy liberal. He is increasing defense spending. Even Alan Greenspan is suggesting economic solutions more akin to “socialism.” Gun lovers have nothing to fear. On policy grounds, we crazy liberals have been criticizing him from day one. The radical right have been lambasting him. With the nation fighting two wars and an economic meltdown, they openly hope he fails. But they are not about policy. They are about hatred. And they hate Obama as they have never hated any president. It’s not complicated.

The Department of Homeland Security just warned:

Right-wing extremists have capitalized on the election of the first African American president, and are focusing their efforts to recruit new members, mobilize existing supporters, and broaden their scope and appeal through propaganda, but they have not yet turned to attack planning.

“Extremist” is now a corporate media phenomenon. Glenn Beck? Rush Limbaugh? Ann Coulter? Bill O’Reilly? Faux News?

They hate him not because of policy or politics. They hate him because of who he is. Not like them. By the color of his skin. It’s time to stop pretending or excusing or evading the obvious. They hate him because he is black!

Bill O’Reilly is a funny guy. He continued his attack on Hip Hop and support of the Republican party by criticizing Eminem for saying he would have sex with Sarah Palin in his latest song, You Made Me. Interestingly enough, O’Reilly had Tammy Bruce on his show to attack Eminem. Tammy Bruce recently came under fire for calling the Obamas “Trash in the White House.”

While I’m not defending Eminem, O’Reilly is obviously just using Eminem to stir up controversy which will help O’Reilly’s ratings and Eminem’s album sales. Still for O’Reilly to criticize someone for explicit material after his erotic novel and sexual harassment suit is funny to me. Eminem is a comedian. He made fun of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky and always makes fun of people in pop culture in his videos.

The Republicans thrust Sarah Palin in to the national spotlight and people like Rush Limbaugh promoted her as “the babe.” Now O’Reilly’s mad that the “liberal” media isn’t crucifying Eminem for saying he’d have sex with Sarah Palin after the GOP attempted to capitalize off Sarah Palin’s sex appeal. Eminem has said a lot more offensive things than his Palin comment and O’Reilly is using the opportunity just to bash the media that doesn’t agree with him.

Its different for a comedic rapper to diss a politician than a commenter like O’Reilly or Limbaugh to do it. O’Reilly and Limbaugh are supposed to be journalists and both have strong political ties to the Republican party and should be held account for their statement. Eminem has no connection to Obama, the “liberal” media or the Democratic party By even binging up Eminem, Bill O’Reilly has shown what a trivial, unnecessary blowhard he is. He should battle Eminem and remove himself from any political discourse.

Last night David Letterman interviewed Fox personality, Bill O’Reilly. He questioned O’Reilly on Rush Limbaugh and his position in the Republican Party. O’Reilly heavily criticized Limbaugh and reffered to his prescription pill addiction.

In a pointed jab, Letterman told O’Reilly “I think of you as a goon, (Holding up a picture of a young O’Reilly) I look at that and I see this sweet, adorable kid… I have a sweet adorable kid and I wonder, ‘What if he too becomes a goon?’”

Jimmy Kimmel revealed some audio clips of Bill O’Relly’s exotic novel, Those Who Trespass on his show. In the book, O’Reilly reads out loud several racy statements including “Say baby put down that pipe and put my pipe up”

O’Reilly has been very critical of explicit rap lyrics yet finds time to write Erotic novels along with his children’s books and right wing talking point books. O’Reilly also showed his erotic side in his sexual harassment case.

Bill O’Reilly criticized rappers Jay Z and Young Jeezy for a concert they had in DC in honor of the Presidential Inauguration (no official connection). He chastised them for their use of the n-word and their disrespect of former President Bush.

In a recent Op-Ed in the New York Post, Bill O’Reilly Compares the website, Daily Kos to the extreme right wingers who call Obama a Muslim and several other false, negative hateful things. He attacked Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for attending the Kos convention, calling it a website that revels in hate.

He sited examples of Daily Kos posting a picture of Joe Lieberman and George Bush about to engage in a sex act and the rumors that started there about Sarah Palin’s daughter actually being her daughter Bristol’s that started there. O’Reilly called Daily Kos character assassins and said that Obama’s visit to their convention was as troubling as anything he’s seen in the Republican precincts.

As someone who frequents the Daily Kos very regularly, I have yet to see the hatred that O’Reilly has talked about. Daily Kos is in many ways a social networking site for politically active people. Most of the information on it is polls and data on the various elections. Any opinion on the website is backed up by legitimate sources and video.  There are user submitted diaries as well as content generated by the site itself. Most of these diaries are both opinionated and informative. All diaries and material I have read are of times progressive and opionated but far from hateful.

If someone posts a picture of Joe Lieberman about to engage in a sex act with George Bush. its like someone putting a picture on their myspace page. While some may find a picture of Joe Lieberman about to engage in a sex act with George Bush in a sex act offensive, I can see the symbolism and humor in it. If O’reilly wants so see some offensive pictures he only needs to frequent the many right wing websites and their racist, I’m still not convinced that Dail Kos was wrong about Sarah Palin’s child. It was those rumors that led to Palin revealing that her daughter was pregnant.

O’Reilly can call Daily Kos character assassins but I have yet to see any proof of those allegations.  The GOP has presented two dubious characters with questionable pasts and views as their candidates. What Daily Kos does is not assassinate these questionable characters, but reveal the truth about their views, past and associations.

If Daily Kos was assassinating characters they would put their whole focus on calling John McCain a traitor who gave secrets to the russians in Vietnam and had a baby with a black prostitute like the king character assassin, Karl Rove did to him in 2000. O’Reilly is showing how out of touch he is with reality by comparing Daily Kos to the angry mobs on the right who continually regurgitate false hateful information about Obama. Has he seen any of the videos of the McCain/Palin hate mobs? Has he heard about GOP officials calling Obama a muslim socialist and comparing him to Osama bin Laden?

If O’Reilly wants to see a webite that revels in hate he need only got the comments in the Drudge Report or his own site or many of the right wing websites that put up racist pictures of Obama or suggest that he’s a muslim or a socialist. If he wants There is a difference between legitimate reporting and character assassination. I have seen more hate on O’Reilluy’s Fox news than I have seen on Daily Kos.

When asked about the media reaction to her 16 year old daughter, Jamie Lynn, being pregnant as opposed to 17 year old, Bristol Palin’s pregnany, Lynne Spears had this to say:

“It’s a totally different reaction. It’s as if [Sarah Palin] became celebrated. I mean, the mother, Palin, was celebrated for this. Every woman in the world has applauded her strength and her convictions and poor little old Jamie Lynn–you saw how she was crucified. Everybody did, firsthand … I just feel like it’s been a very hypocritical situation.”

The two most famous faces of the right wing media, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly, have been the biggest hypocrites. After the news of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy, Rush Limbaugh came on the air with the following talking points.
1. The Left’s ridicule of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and her family will backfire.

2: Gov. Palin’s daughter, Bristol, made a classic “average American” mistake, endearing her to born-again Christians.

3: Gov. Palin is energizing heartland Middle Americans and “values voters.”

4. Leftists are sexists.

If Bristol Palin made a ‘classic average American’ mistake, so did Jamie Lynn Spears right? Both were underage girls who got pregnant and thrust into the spotlight. So what did Limbaugh have to say when Jamie Lynn Spears got pregnant?

Caller: Would you tend to think that a family in this position,
though, wouldn’t you think that there would be a more watchful eye as
a parent to be watching over these kids so this doesn’t happen to
them?

RUSH: I would certainly hope so, but it’s long past time for this to
happen. The parents here are the culprits!

Shouldn’t the same thing apply to Sarah and Bristol Palin? Her family was in a similar high profile position. Shouldn’t she have been paying a more watchful eye on her daughter? Isn’t she the ‘culprit’ in this crime of teen pregnancy?

Bill Oreilly also ran with his FOX/GOP talking points saying,
‘Millions of families are dealing with teen pregnancy, and as long as society doesn’t have to support the mother, father or baby, it is a personal matter. It’s true that some Americans will judge Governor Palin and her family, and she will have a hard time running for vice president if there is much more chaos. For the sake of her and her family, we hope things calm down. This country needs a vibrant policy debate, not a soap opera.’

However when Jamie Lynn was pregnant this is what he had to say:

‘Now most teens are pinheads in some ways. But here the blame falls primarily on the parents of the girl, who obviously have little control over her or even over Britney Spears. Look at the way she behaves. And by the way, the mother, Lynne Spears, has reportedly already sold pictures of the upcoming baby of her 16-year-old for a million bucks. Incredible pinhead’
By this logic, isn’t Sarah Palin an ‘incredible pinhead’ as well? Isn’t she to blame for Bristol’s pregnancy? How hypocritical is it for O’Reilly to talk about ‘policy debates’ over issues, when from Reverend Wright to Nas to Ludacris, to Jamie Lynn and Britney Spears, O’Reilly has made a living off soap operas? How much time has he given on his show to legitimate policy debate? In this statement, O’Reilly is basically saying that if you’re rich, it’s perfectly alright to get pregnant young, but don’t you poor people come asking for money if you get knocked up! We need that money to kill civilians in the Middle East.
Despite the fact that Obama has taken the high road and told his staff to lay off the Bristol pregnancy, saying that candidates’ children are off limits, Limbaugh and Oreilly have both attacked children of candidates. Rush Limbaugh referred to Chelsea Clinton as ‘the White House dog’ when she was only 13 years old. McCain has not been the bigger man, like Obama, when it comes to opponents’ children, telling a joke about Chelsea Clinton being so ugly because Janet Reno was her father when she was 18. So you can call underage family members ugly but you can’t talk about their pregnancies even when their only credentials are their family values?

Senator Obama’s challenge is obvious. In the political mainstream hip-hop equals sex, violence, misogyny and criminal behavior. And no matter how fiercely it’s defended, this message doesn’t get explained away. Obama’s opponents (Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly and Laura Ingraham leading the pack) are eager to link Obama with Ludacris. To do so, they imagine, is to associate Obama with hip-hop and thus tarnish his image.

If hip-hop is the problem with American moral values, the logic goes, then a vote for Obama is to vote against family values.

To be sure, those advancing an Obama-Ludacris connection as a political scandal hope to siphon votes from Obama –either from those on the fence or from hip-hop generationers who feel he doesn’t have their back.

Like many seemingly harmless issues that evolved into huge media obsessions this year, the Ludacris backlash is driven by traditional political elites, banking on old racial fears. Most can’t get past Ludacris’ “paint the White House black” lyrics, which pundits translate to this: if the president is Black quality of life will increase for Black Americans, but only at the expense of whites.

This push echoes the vetting of Black presidential candidates, and of Barack Obama specifically–denounce this, denounce that. He’s denounced Farrakhan, his former minister Jeremiah Wright, his former Church, a Catholic priest who spoke at his former church and now Ludacris. The object of his disaffection is increasingly becoming more tangential, but the impetus is always the same – since Obama is Black, he must prove that he won’t use the presidency as a bully pulpit for Black political interest.

Obama will likely weather this storm even easier than the previous ones. But what the Ludacris controversy reveals for the hip-hop activist community is much more profound: the baggage presented by hip-hop’s public image compromises the hip-hop activist community’s attempts to place its issues on the national agenda.

Hip-hop’s critics, like Manhattan Institute senior fellow John McWhorter, use mainstream hip-hop music’s association with criminality and sex to dismiss three things:

• the political analysis offered by some hip-hop lyrics,

• the important political work of activists on the ground from The Ella Baker Center and The League of Young Voters to Industryears.com and Hip-Hop Against Police Brutality,

• and hip-hop activists’ legitimate concerns about the state of American youth.

Thus, issues like the need for affordable and effective education, housing and childcare, the inherent racial injustices of policing and prisons, and the lack of living wage jobs don’t receive serious consideration.  Neither do the solutions that hip-hop organizers are proposing for them.

Such issues were raised last week at the annual conference of the Hip-Hop Congress, an 80 chapter strong national organization of independent hip-hop artists and grassroots activists that has been functioning for the last decade. They will be raised again this weekend at the third National Hip-Hop Political Convention, gathering in Las Vegas August 1-3. Reverend Lennox Yearwood, who heads the The Hip-Hop Caucus that recently partnered with rapper T.I. to kick-off a voter registration effort targeting youth, is also raising similar questions.

All three organizations, should do themselves and their movement a favor by articulating loudly and clearly hip-hop’s moral center: that hip-hop political organizers are concerned about the negative representations of women, that criminal lifestyles aren’t something youth should emulate, and that young Black, Brown and poor people are concerned about the future of their families and are committed to placing the interest of children first.

To do so will align this emerging voting bloc with Black political movements before them and win allies in the process. But perhaps more important, it will go a long way in helping distance their noble cause from the profit motive of the music industry. It will also distinguish them from the few individuals willing to peddle hyper sexual and violent imagery at the expense of those fighting for an America where young people have a bright future.
