I’d imagine the last thing a parent thinks when dropping their barely legal child off at their freshman dormitory is if they will receive that dreadful call about a horrible tragedy. Making it to college is a time of celebration. But celebrations have been followed by mourning.

On September 16, 18-year-old Dominique Frazier was stabbed to death by her roommate. According to witnesses, the two Bowie State University students had a disagreement after Alexis Simpson, 19, turned off the music Frazier and her friends were listening to before heading out for a comedy show. In the hallway of their on-campus apartment Simpson emerged with a knife and began swinging, fatally stabbing Frazier in the neck. Simpson will most likely spend the majority of her life behind bars while Frazier was robbed of her chance to fully live her life — a tragedy for all involved.

Bowie State University isn’t the only college where students are at risk of being the victim of a horrendous crime.

Everette Howard was fresh out of high school and attending a summer program at the University of Cincinnati. There are various accounts of what happened, but what is known is that Howard died after being tasered by campus police. The officer was placed on paid administrative leave. Whether it’s student violence, violence in the surrounding neighborhood or police wrongfully killing college students, a conversation about trends of violence has to be had.

College campuses aren’t isolated from the neighborhoods or cities they are a part of. College students are also humans that are not magically above crime or violence because they attend college. Because of that certain events are inevitable. But it shouldn’t be the norm. We shouldn’t expect the possibility that bright eyed, promising youth aren’t even safe on their college campuses.

When I was in college, fights were common. Some took place on the yard while others were reserved for parties or the apartment complex on campus. Any extra ruckus happened when the non-college students would parlay on our campus and cause trouble. I never felt unsafe. According to the Fall 2009 National College Health Assessment by the American College Health Association, only 31.6 percent of students said they felt “very safe” on their campuses at night. That number should be much higher.

In no way am I implying the crime rate on college campus is anything to be alarmed about. But we’d be remiss not to pay attention to what has been occurring lately where college students are being killed on campus.

It is up to students to refrain from questionable behavior that can lead to violence and death. And it is the administration’s responsibility to make sure they are creating a safe haven for students on their campuses. If police are wrongfully killing college students they must be held accountable. We can’t afford to lose any more of our youth to senseless violence.

Bascus, like alleged shooter Nicholas Welch (pictured above), 25, faces murder, conspiracy, attempted murder and weapons charges.

Welch, who was arrested earlier this week, has proclaimed his innocence. He pleaded not guilty. He also agreed to submit to a DNA test. His lawyer asked that he remain in protective custody at the Essex County jail.

Killed in the shooting was 19-year-old Seton Hall honor student Jessica Moore. Police say Moore sustained a bullet to the head as she was tending to a friend who had been shot in the jaw.

Even if he just meant to encourage straight men to give oral, his statement offended many considering the recent gay teen suicide at Rutgers, one of four similar tragedies within a month.

The reason that racial profiling exists is because there are indeed crimes that certain races are more likely to commit than other races. Like, if you hear that there’s a criminal out there snatching gold chains or selling crack, you might be right to assume the culprit is Black.

Similarly, if you hear that there’s a criminal out there committing serial murders, starting maniacal religious cults, shooting professorial colleagues or flying single-engine airplanes into IRS buildings, a white suspect might be more likely.

Why the former listed crimes are seemingly treated more seriously than the latter mentioned crimes is anybody’s guess. But the tendencies exist more likely as a product of economic circumstances than because of any inherent biological differences between Black people and white people.

Everything else being equal however and you might expect that suicide rates between Blacks and whites would parallel if not, considering finances again and the general belief that Blacks in America have it so much tougher than whites and everyone else, believing that Blacks would be most likely to kill ourselves. Two very recent headline grabbing suicides argue otherwise however.

Last week, 17 year-old Alexis Pilkington, a white Long Island high school student who had suffered depression, decided to end it all due to relentless abuse from cyber-bullies.

A couple of days ago, 15 year-old Phoebe Prince, a recent immigrant to Massachusetts from Ireland, hung herself in her stairwell after being tormented as the “new girl” by bullies.

Now, these are both horribly tragic deaths.

Still, the fact that as recently as 2005, whites outpaced Blacks in rate of suicide 12.3% to 5.1%, makes it at least reasonable to wonder if Blacks are simply equipped with more emotional fortitude than whites.

Or maybe it’s just the times and the fact that people all along the color spectrum have grown softer.

For some reason, the brave boys and girls that integrated Little Rock Central High School back in 1957 came to mind.

Those 9 kids were spit on and continually pelted with rocks and other objects despite the “protection” of the National Guard!

Today’s e-thug wouldn’t have stood a chance against them.

From HuffingtonPost.com:

Poet Maya Angelou has often visited St. Sabina Catholic Church on the South Side to read her poetry. This week, after a rash of shootings in Chicago, she once again joined Rev. Michael Pfleger and said “we have to stop this madness.”

As the weather gets warmer, Pfleger and other anti-violence advocates are preparing for increased gang violence–and hope the community will continue to be engaged and involved enough to stop it. Though she was billed for an hour of sharing life lessons and poems, she ended up discussing Chicago violence with the packed church on her sixth visit. The Chicago Sun-Times reports:

“I know that the children are being murdered,” Angelou said. “It’s happening in Chicago. It’s also happening in St. Louis, in New York and Savannah.”At some point, we have to stop this madness. We have to stop it! We have to say, ‘Wait a minute. Hello! Hello! Hello! No! No! Stop it!’ “

GALLERY: Black Literary Greats

Angelou’s visit came the day after 15 people were shot–one fatally–in 15 hours across the city. It came just two days after a 7-year-old girl was struck and critically wounded by a stray bullet in a shooting that is believed to be gang-related.

Only hours after FIU running back Kendall Berry was stabbed to death on the school’s Miami campus, the university president said in a video message that officials “will not rest” until his attacker is found.

“Our hearts are heavy,” a somber FIU president Mark B. Rosenberg said Friday morning.

Berry was stabbed late Thursday night, after Miami-Dade police said the 22-year-old junior from Haines City, Fla., was involved in an argument with another man outside the front doors of the school’s student recreation center – one of the spots where the football team trains. Several witnesses to the incident were being interviewed, Miami-Dade Police Detective Javier Baez said.

FIU opened as scheduled Friday morning, with increased security for students and grief counseling available. Students living in residence halls were advised to keep doors locked, and any person at the university could be escorted around campus if desired.

RELATED: Man Charged In Stabbing Death Of UConn Football Player, Jasper Howard

Members of the FIU football team were already receiving counseling, and a football coaching clinic scheduled for Friday and Saturday has been indefinitely postponed.

Text continues after gallery…

“Last night, we lost a well-liked student who was a tireless worker in the classroom and on the ball field,” Rosenberg said. “Like so many of our students, Kendall Berry had positive energy and a bright future.”

Berry died on the way to a hospital, Baez said, adding that he did not know if Berry and his attacker knew each other.

A person was “detained and questioned” but was released and “is not a currently a suspect,” Detective Aida Fina-Milian said Friday morning.

Spring football practices have been postponed. No final decision has been made about when to hold the program’s annual spring game, which for now remains scheduled for Wednesday.

“In our sorrow, we must come together,” Rosenberg said in his message to the university community. “Our campus is safe. Now more than ever, you must tell this story. … Even while we mourn Kendall and express our sympathy to his family and friends, we must not let this heinous crime overshadow the incredible track record for safety that we have.”

Outside the rec center Friday morning, police tape was stuffed into a trash can and an orange “X” was spray-painted on the ground near the front doors. A sign said the building was scheduled to reopen at noon Friday.

Other than the university statement, FIU’s athletic department did not have an immediate comment.

Television images showed several students, including some identified as FIU athletes, hugging and crying Thursday night near the spot where the stabbing took place, shortly before the university released official confirmation that Berry died from his injuries. One student dropped to her knees in grief just inside the doorway, screaming.

RELATED: Three Univ.
FIU senior Martha Carvajal, 25, said she heard helicopters and saw police lights while she studied on campus.

“I was startled by it,” Carvajal said Friday. “When I finally found out, I was like, ‘Oh no, somebody actually got killed here.’”

Berry had 164 all-purpose yards in limited use as a freshman in 2007, appearing in all 12 FIU games that season. He sat out the 2008 season with a knee injury and then had some breakout moments in 2009, rushing for three touchdowns in a span of 13 minutes against Middle Tennessee on Nov. 7 and following that up with two more scores the following week in a win over North Texas.

Berry had seven brothers and sisters, the university said. A memorial service is being scheduled, Rosenberg said.

“Last night, his grief-stricken mother described Kendall as a negotiator, not a fighter,” Rosenberg said. “We will not rest until the perpetrator of this crime is brought to justice.”

Berry finished last season with a team-best seven touchdowns, despite not playing in the season’s first seven games because of continued rehab from the knee injury.

“When you put the football in his hands, that kid can do some unbelievable things,” FIU football coach Mario Cristobal said late last season of Berry.

FIU officials said they did not recall another killing on the school’s campus.

“It’s a very safe campus and we strive every day to keep it that way,” said Lt. Rick Torres of the FIU police department.

The woman, who remains anonymous, claims that the act was an unfortunate and inadvertent mistake. She wrote:

I found a small piece of rope on the ground earlier in the day [Tuesday, Feb. 23]. While I was hanging out with my friends a bit later, we tried jump-roping with it and making it into a lasso. My friend then took the rope and tied it into a noose. I innocently marveled at his ability to tie a noose, without thinking of any of its connotations or the current racial climate at UCSD … Three days later, on Friday morning, I found out that the noose had been found and construed as another racist act on campus. I felt so ashamed and embarrassed, and the first thing I did was call the campus police and confess. I was hoping to clarify that this was not an act of racism before the incident got a full reaction from the campus.

Last weekend’s gang rape at Richmond High School was almost bound to happen. All it needed was a spark – the elements were already there.

The courtyard where the attack erupted was the most infamous spot on campus, an out-of-the-way, poorly lit venue for gang initiations and dopers lighting up joints.

The 15-year-old victim was a vulnerable girl who attended church and wanted to be a police scout, but also worried counselors by trying too hard to please the school’s bad boys.

As for the suspects: They were a mix of the bad boys, the wannabe bad boys, and the hardened, grown-up bad boys who had aged out of school.

All it took for things to lurch out of control, investigators, students and community leaders say, was opportunity – and that came when the girl left the school dance Saturday night, walked by a group of bad boys boozing hard in the unlit courtyard, and accepted their invitation to hang out.

Fueled by street-macho bravado and inspired by sexual initiations required to get into some local gangs, they began the attack, investigators say.

On the other side of the campus, more than 400 students partied at the homecoming dance.

RELATED:

Easy to trace

And now it is those 400 students and the rest of the 1,600-strong student body, along with their teachers and community leaders, who are wrestling to make sense of what happened. It doesn’t take much to trace the cause, they say.

Take the poverty-driven frustration of inner-city Richmond, a youth street culture that glorifies thugs and applauds degradation of women, and the desensitization of young men through violent video games, music and language, and you have a template for trouble.

“This is like a lot of schools, where most of the kids are good kids – and then, we know which ones are going wrong,” said Charles Johnson, one of Richmond High’s security specialists.

“You wouldn’t believe the stuff we have to put up with those few who go wrong – guns, dope busts, fighting,” Johnson said. “We know that courtyard, and we’ve been waiting for something to happen there.

“I’m sorry it had to be this terrible.”

Johnson, teachers and students at least partially blame the attack on the lack of lighting, sturdy fencing or security cameras on the courtyard, which abuts a rough neighborhood on the northern end of the campus on 23rd Street. Signs for the Norteño and Crips gangs are scrawled in huge letters on a wall near the driveway leading into the courtyard.

On Saturday, district officials confirmed plans to install higher fences around the entire school before next summer, and to firm up security in general – but the challenges will still be steep. Johnson also blames the attack and much of the school’s troubles on nonstudent “outsiders” – as several of the attack suspects are – who regularly trespass on campus, and they are much less respectful of authority than the students themselves.

But as much as anything, the attack stems from the way the roughest young men treat women, Johnson and the others say. And this is a problem that extends far beyond the East Bay campus’ borders.

They were wearing bulletproof vests and flanked by deputies.

Quite a change for suspects Cody Ray Smith, 15, Ari Abdallah Morales, 16, and Marcelles James Peter, 17, who all now face charges in the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl outside her northern California high school’s homecoming dance.

They were arraigned in Contra Costa County Superior Court Thursday, and charged as adults because of the severity of the crime, said prosecutor Dana Cashman.

They could face life in prison.

Smith pleaded not guilty, while Morales and Peter did not enter a plea. 19-year-old Manuel Ortega was arraigned separately and also entered no plea.

Another suspect, Salvador Rodriguez, 21, also remained jailed but has not been charged.

Police say as many as ten people ranging in age from 15 to their mid-20s attacked the girl for more than two hours at a dimly lit area Saturday night.

UPDATE: 6 Arrested In Alleged Gang-Rape Of California Girl, [Updated 10.30.09, 9:00 a.m.]

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) — Police made a sixth arrest Thursday in the gang rape of a 15-year-old girl outside a high school dance.

Jose Carlos Montano, 18, was arrested at about 5 p.m. outside his San Pablo home. He played a “significant role in the rape of the victim,” Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan said.

Montano was being held on $1.3 million bail on suspicion of rape, rape in concert with force and other charges, Gagan said.

His arrest came after three other teen suspects appeared for the first time in court Thursday.

Cody Ray Smith, 15, pleaded not guilty, while Ari Abdallah Morales, 16, and Marcelles James Peter, 17, did not enter pleas during their arraignment in Contra Costa County Superior Court.

Peter’s aunt, Monica Peter, said before the hearing that her nephew had told her he was only a bystander and did not participate in the attack. Asked why he didn’t do anything to stop it, she said he feared “he would get his ass kicked.”

Morales’ lawyer, Ernie Castillo, said he was still learning details about the case.

RICHMOND, Calif. – Four teenagers face adult charges in the alleged gang rape of a 15-year-old girl outside her Northern California high school’s homecoming dance.

Defendants Manuel Ortega, 19, Cody Ray Smith, 15, Ari Abdallah Morales, 16 of and Marcelles James Peter, 17 were arraigned Thursday in Contra Costa County Superior Court. Smith pleaded not guilty in the case, while the others didn’t enter a plea.

All four will be back in court next week.

Flanked by deputies and wearing bulletproof vests, Smith, Morales and Peter were each charged with rape in concert and sexual penetration with a foreign object, along with special circumstances that could make them eligible for life in prison.

They were charged as adults because of the severity of the crime, prosecutor Dana Cashman said.

Morales is also charged with robbery. Ortega also is charged with robbery and assault causing great bodily injury.

A fifth suspect arrested, Salvador Rodriguez, 21, also remained jailed but has not been charged.

Richmond police said they’re still looking for more suspects in the Saturday night attack, which may have involved more than two dozen people watching as the girl was raped for two hours.

A fifth suspect remains in custody but has not yet been charged.

Police: At Least 12 People Watched Girl Gang-Raped & Did Nothing, [Updated 10.27.09, at 10:16 a.m.]

RICHMOND, Calif. — Police believe as many as a dozen people watched a 15-year-old girl get beaten and gang-raped outside her high school homecoming dance without reporting it.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that onlookers laughed, took pictures and even joined in the crime.

Two suspects were in custody Monday, but police said as many as five other men attacked the girl over a two-hour period Friday night outside Richmond High School.

“She was raped, beaten, robbed and dehumanized by several suspects who were obviously OK enough with it to behave that way in each other’s presence,” Lt. Mark Gagan said. “What makes it even more disturbing is the presence of others. People came by, saw what was happening and failed to report it.”

The victim remained hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Manuel Ortega, 19, was arrested at the scene and was being held on $800,000 bail for investigation of rape and robbery. He is not a student at the school.

Richmond police Sgt. David Harris said he did not know if Ortega had retained an attorney.

A 15-year-old student also was booked late Monday on one count of sexual assault, Gagan said.

Police said the girl left the dance and was walking to meet her father for a ride home when a classmate invited her to join a group drinking in the courtyard. The victim had drank a large amount of alcohol by the time the assault began, police said. The girl’s father was looking for her during the attack, according to the LA Times:

Police were finally called after a female student overhead people talking about the rape. She called 911 and told dispatchers what she had heard, Gagan said. When officers arrived on the scene, the assault was still going on. Several suspects fled as officers found the girl naked from the waist up, Gagan said.

The victim was semi-conscious near a picnic table, police said.

Marin Trujillo, a spokesman for the West Contra Costa Unified School District, said there were four police officers and three school administrators monitoring the dance, but the assault happened away from the gym.

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — A man was arrested and charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a University of Connecticut football player but was just trying to break up a fight at a school-sanctioned dance, his attorney said Tuesday.

John William Lomax, of Bloomfield, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with stabbing 20-year-old Jasper Howard, attorney Deron Freeman said. His bond was set at $2 million, Freeman said.

State police have scheduled an early afternoon news conference to announce what they call “significant developments” in the investigation.

Lomax, who is not a UConn student and lives 30 miles from campus, wasn’t present when the argument started and doesn’t know what it was about, but did try to break up the fight, Freeman said.

“He was just partying,” Freeman said. “Often people from out of town go to the UConn campus to party.”

Freeman said he was first told that Lomax would be charged in connection with the fight, but not with murder.

“I’m surprised,” Freeman said. “I’m curious to find out what evidence they had to secure an arrest warrant for murder. … From all the evidence I’ve heard, he was not involved in the stabbing.”

Howard, a starting cornerback whose nickname was Jazz, was stabbed early Oct. 18 outside a university-sanctioned dance, hours after helping his team to a homecoming game win over Louisville.

The entire UConn team attended his funeral Monday in Miami, where Howard was eulogized by coach Randy Edsall as “the ultimate son, he was the ultimate brother. He was the ultimate teammate. He was the ultimate friend. They didn’t come any better than Jazz.”

Police this weekend searched storm drains and a lake on campus near the area of the stabbing but wouldn’t say what they were looking for.

Another man faces charges of breach of peace and interfering with police but also is not charged in the killing.

Lomax has had a full-time job in the information technology field for the past two years and is a graduate of Bloomfield High School, Freeman said.
