The Weight Watchers promotion,”Lose Like a Man,” depicts Barkley in a sleeveless halter dress and showing off a pair of gams that only a mother can love.  The campaign will try to get the message across to viewers that dropping weight is just not a female thing to do.

Barkley claims to have packed on at least 100 pounds to his 6’6″ frame since he ended his b-ball career back in 2000. He attributed his weight gain to just eating junk food and being a “lazy ass.”  When doctors warned ”The Round Mound of Rebound” that he was either going to wind up getting diabetes, having a stroke or dropping dead, he made up his mind to get the pounds off.

Since he was determined to get most of the weight off, Barkley knew his eating habits had to change. He was well aware that he had to incorporate veggies, which he had an aversion to, into his diet.  Barkley told People Magazine, “Before Weight Watchers,” he said, “I thought vegetables were all nasty! Weight Watchers has me eating cauliflower, brussels sprouts and asparagus, and I really, really like it.”

The first 14 pounds Barkley managed to shed on his own, he then began the Weight Watchers last December.  The next 27-pound weight loss, he achieved with the help of the program which whittled him down to 309 pounds.  Instead of schlepping around a body that zapped his energy, now Barkley says he feel rejuvenated.  “I feel good. My body is starting to look like a person again! I’ve been fat for a long time,”  he told People Magazine.

Known for his over the top remarks which can either be considered offensive or right on the money, Charles Barkley has decided to inject himself into the gays in sports issue.

In the past few days, an NBA executive and former collegiate basketball player have come out of the closet.

On the heels of this, Barkley said in an interview last week that he’s sure he’s played with gay players and frankly doesn’t care about their sexual orientation.

“First of all, every player has played with gay guys. It bothers me when I hear these reporters and jocks get on TV and say, ‘Oh, no guy can come out in a team sport. These guys would go crazy.’ First of all, quit telling me what I think. I’d rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can’t play.”

He also spoke on the belief many hold that it would be crazy for someone to come out during their playing career.

Atlanta — On Thursday’s edition of “Inside The NBA” on TNT, NBA analyst Charles Barkley ripped Tucker Carlson for saying Michael Vick should have been executed. Carlson made the statement while filling in for Sean Hannity on Fox News on Dec. 28.

“There’s some idiot on another station named Tucker Carlson, who called out Michael Vick,” Barkley said at the beginning of his rant. He started to praise Vick and wished him luck in the playoffs, then continued to fire at Carlson.

“Tucker Carlson, who’s a nobody. He used to work for us over here. We fired him because he sucked,” the NBA Hall of Famer said. “He said Michael Vick should be executed, which is total BS.”

Charles Barkley has once again voiced his displeasure with LeBron James — and this time the Hall of Famer is using even harsher language than before.

In July, Barkley said he was “disturbed” by LeBron’s actions.

Yesterday, Barkley upped the ante while reacting to James’s recent tweet, in which he claims to be keeping track of “everyone taking shots at me this summer.” While being interviewed on ESPN Radio 103.3 FM in Dallas/Fort Worth on Wednesday night, Barkley snapped.

“I want him to make sure that he puts my name on that (list),” Barkley said, in reference to James’ tweet. “I thought that his little one-hour special was a punk move,” the analyst added, according to FanHouse.

Charles Barkley says Tiger Woods changed his cell phone number the day after his car accident and is not talking to some of his famous friends.
On a show that airs Sunday on news network HLN, Barkley and filmmaker Spike Lee worry that Woods isn’t taking advantage of the invaluable advice that can only be offered by friends who are used to the spotlight.
“You should reach out to your celebrity friends when things go bad,” Barkley told The Associated Press in a phone interview Tuesday. “They’re the only people who understand what it’s like.”
Barkley appears on “With All Due Respect” with two other Turner Sports analysts, baseball Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley and longtime NASCAR driver Kyle Petty. Lee is one of the guests in the one-hour special during which the sports stars discuss a variety of topics.
Turner Sports and HLN are owned by Turner Broadcasting System.
“He’s insulated,” Lee said during the taping for the show. “If Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan can’t get to him, and those are his boys, then other people are making bad moves.”
Barkley said Tuesday he has not spoken to Woods since the Nov. 27 accident, which unleashed a series of events that resulted in him admitting to marital infidelity.
“I’ve been trying to get to him and can’t get to him,” he said. “It’s very frustrating.”
Barkley said he just wants to tell Woods, “Hey, man, we love you. If you need anything, pick up the phone.”
Chatting about subjects ranging from sports to world news, entertainment and current events is a natural for the outspoken Barkley, who has long expressed an interest in entering politics. He said he wants potential voters to be familiar with his views, with include support for abortion rights and gay marriage.
“I hope people get a chance to see where I am on different issues,” he said.
While taping the show, the three athletes found they had similar feelings about another of the year’s big stories: the death of Michael Jackson. Each felt at peace about the saga after seeing “Michael Jackson’s This Is It,” the film about the King of Pop’s final rehearsals.
During the conversation, Barkley said, “I thought Kyle was going to cry.”

OPINION: Charles Barkley Bares All During Tele-Conference

Today, Charles Barkley took part in a conference call to promote his appearance in this year’s American Century Celebrity Golf Championship. However, as Barkley tends to do, he allowed himself (with the pushing of reporters) to go a little off topic.

During the phone call, Barkley reiterated that he has indeed stopped gambling. He claimed that he has not missed gambling, but that he will gamble again someday. Apparently, Barkley said the reason he needed to stop gambling was “because [he] was losing.” I will come back to that in a second.

Barkley also addressed his latest run-in with the law, when he was stopped for a DUI in Arizona earlier this year. For that incident, Barkley paid a $2,000 fine and spent 3 days in jail. He also had to attend an alcohol treatment program. However, Barkley admits that none of that has prevented him from continuing to drink; he just does not drive under the influence…anymore.

Before, I begin to opine, let me reiterate a point I acknowledge all of the time at TheSportsWatchers.com: I love Charles Barkley. He is one of the most entertaining, witty, intelligent people I have ever seen, and he always means well—or so it seems. I often tune into TNT regular season NBA broadcasts after the games are over, just because I want to hear what Barkley has to say every night. In fact, I am more likely to record the TNT post game show than the game itself.

Now that I have that out of the way, I have to say this: What the hell is wrong with this man? I don’t doubt his intelligence or any of the other butt-kissing compliments I just sent his way. Yet for him to act as if he is so remorseful, yet essentially go on to say that he is going to continue to live his life as he always has, is borderline ignorant. The man honestly said that he needed to take a break from gambling, not because he was possibly addicted to it and/or it was effecting his demeanor and everyday personality, but because he was losing. During the conference call, he made an analogy that basically conveyed that if he were winning too much money, no one would have a problem with his gambling. As if to say there aren’t addicted gamblers who win. Come on, Chuck!

The fact that the man said he will return to gambling, while not ridiculous, is more or less…how do you say…umm…stupid! I understand that Barkley has a lot of money and that TNT will continue to give him a lot of money for the rest of his life. However, that was never the issue with his gambling. We never saw Chuck selling his house to pay off a gambling debt. The issue was that he was becoming too consumed with gambling, to the point where it altered his lifestyle. And I don’t care what you say, but over participation in gambling can’t alter your lifestyle in a positive way—especially if you’re already rich.

Okay, so he has not learned his lesson with gambling, but you would think the whole drinking and driving thing would be easy enough to overcome. And that’s true, Chuck hasn’t had any issues with DUIs since the incident earlier this year, and hopefully we won’t have any such issues ever again. However, during the conference call, Barkley admitted to going out to dinner and having a drink before driving for the duration of the last 25 years. Now I know there is some merit to the baring of your soul, being completely honest, and starting a new, but maybe this isn’t really the place to do it. Maybe it isn’t such a good idea to tell the entire world that you’ve possibly been endangering the lives of people on the road for the majority of your life. Maybe you shouldn’t announce that you’re “lucky” to have never hurt anyone else while driving under the influence during a conference call. Maybe there are things that you should just keep to yourself.

You would think that after 25 years of being a public persona that Chuck would know a little something about being discrete. He of all people should understand that baring all of his faults is not a great idea, especially if he is essentially assuring people that his life is headed down the same treacherous path. I understand that he has no intention to drink and drive or gamble his money away, but in order for him to even be capable of doing those things, he has to actually continue to drink and gamble. Two things he apparently isn’t going to give up, and in case you didn’t know that, he thought he’d announce it to the world.

PHOENIX (AP) — Former NBA star Charles Barkley began serving a three-day jail sentence Saturday for a drunken-driving charge.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said Barkley already had been acting like a “model inmate,” even chatting with others at Tent City, where inmates are housed in tents rather than traditional jail cells.

Barkley has a private tent, but is close enough to other inmates to talk, Arpaio said.

Barkley, a TNT studio analyst, will spend all of Saturday in custody, but will be given work release from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. He will get work release at 8 a.m. Monday and will not have to return to the tents at 8 p.m.

That’s a total of 36 hours in jail.

Arpaio said Barkley is not being given special treatment and has a separate tent for his own safety. Meals will be brought to him.

“I didn’t have to put him in the tents. I could have put him in a cell all by himself — that would be special,” he said. “He’s just lucky it’s not the summer. It’s 130 degrees in the summer.”

Arpaio said he planned to meet with Barkley on Saturday and ask him to talk to the county’s 200 inmates ages 15 to 17 about not making the same mistakes he did.

The 45-year-old Barkley pleaded guilty last month to two misdemeanor DUI charges stemming from his Dec. 31 arrest, shortly after leaving a Scottsdale nightclub and failing a field sobriety test. He had a blood-alcohol level of .149 percent, nearly twice the legal limit.

A Scottsdale judge reduced Barkley’s original 10-day sentence to three days after reviewing the case and deciding that seven days should be suspended if Barkley completes an alcohol-treatment program.

The Hall of Fame player also must pay more than $2,000 (€1,580) in fines and install an ignition-interlock device on his vehicles.

A message left with Barkley’s attorney was not immediately returned Saturday.

Barkley said last month that he made a mistake and just has “to take the beatdown.”

Barkley played 16 seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets, and played on the USA Olympic “Dream Team” in 1992 and 1996. He was an 11-time All-Star and league MVP in 1993.

In court documents revealed by The Smoking Gun, new information has come forward about Barkley’s DUI arrest on Wednesday morning in Gilbert, AZ.

According to the report, Barkley told the arresting officer that he was taking his female friend around the corner for oral sex. He said “I was going to drive around the corner and get [oral sex],” and that he had recieved the act from his friend before and that “it was the best one he had ever had.”

According to the report Barkley told employees that he would tattoo their name on his ass if it would get him out of trouble. According to the NY Daily News, Barkley was partying with fromer NY Giant, Michael Strahan and actort, Jaleel White who is most famous for his portrayal of Urkel on the sitcom, Family Matters.

Five rules of the road for (not) playing the race card

Charles Barkley’s comments last week about the Auburn coaching situation sparked a lot of discussion in the world of sports talk. One particular conversation among those caught my attention: a diatribe against Barkley by Eric Kuselias on ESPN radio. Kuselias fumed that Barkley was making what was, in essence, a slanderous claim against Auburn in invoking race as a factor in the decision to hire Gene Chizik over Turner Gill. Kuselias’ attack on Barkley was a good illustration of five basic rules for how race can (and can’t be) discussed on (the largely white medium of) sports talk radio. (Tim Wise has the definitive discussion of the “race card” and its uses, here).

Rule #1: All discussion of race is, so to speak, Black and White

Kuselias essentially asserted that Barkley was slandering Auburn by calling race the number one factor in the decision to hire Gene Chizik over Turner Gill because Barkley was accusing Auburn of being “a bunch of racists.” In sports talk radio world, there are no subtleties when it comes to race. Either you are a proven member of the KKK, or to invoke race as a factor is unfair slander. Kuselias himself said that one reason for hiring Chizik was that he was “familiar” because of his ties to Auburn. But he isn’t necessarily familiar to his potential recruits, at least half of whom will be African American. Instead, he is familiar to wealthy boosters, alumni, trustees, high school coaches and other relevant actors. Such familiarity might have made him a safe choice and tipped the scales in his favor. Does that reality make Auburn’s decision-makers “a bunch of racists?” Not necessarily. And, I don’t think that’s what Barkley said. But race is a factor in social networking, including job networking. And it is plausible to say that invoking familiarity itself has potential racial implications. But to Kuselias, the all-or-nothing rule applies. It’s a nice way to foreclose any discussion of race.

Rule#2: A Few Good Men: Only the courageous few white radio hosts will dare speak out against the tyranny of political correctness.

One caller asked Kuselias whether Barkley was going to be “punished” for his comments. By whom? For what? Naturally, these questions were not addressed. But it was an opportune time for Kuselias to remind his audience that only he was willing to tell it like it was. Though it’s not true of all sports talk, white self-pity is a recurring theme in sports talk radio, the apogee of which may have been the controversial firing of Don Imus in the Spring of 2007 (for in-depth coverage of media reaction at the time, see here and here). In this world of self-pity, facts like the roughly four percent of upper division head football coaching jobs belonging to African Americans constitute far less of a grievance than the intolerable assertion that race might have something to do with that fact.

Rule#3: If the Shoe Were on the Other Foot…

This is the one where hosts and callers hypothesize about what would have happened if the circumstances had been reversed. In this case, one caller said, with Kuselias’ approval, that had Chizik been Black, Barkley would have defended the decision to hire him. The implication, unacknowledged by the caller, or Kuselias, is that Chizik does have a questionable resume (In the 15-minute segment I heard, Kuselias never once mentioned Chizik’s 5-19 won loss record in defending him as a good selection). But the point, of course, is that Black guys with Chizik’s resume don’t get prestigious job offers in college coaching. And White guys with Gill’s resume are hot commodities that have major programs banging down their doors to hire them. But it’s far more satisfying to traffic in hypothetical scenarios when you’re trying to prove that up is down and Black is white.

Rule#4: Beyond a Reasonable Doubt.

The life blood of Sports talk radio is banter, endless speculation and typically unsupported assertions about people’s (especially athletes’) motives and behavior. But when it comes to race, Kuselias warns us, you better be “100% sure” before you suggest that race is a factor. Why? That’s never really made clear. One presumes it’s because, in the upside down world of sports talk, once someone is accused of having racially questionable motives, one is somehow ruined for life. Barkley’s claims about Auburn will provide a good test. Let’s see whether there’s a boycott of Auburn football, or the program is tainted and fails to make money in the future or gets dropped from television contracts or suffers any other meaningful consequences as a result of its decision. I am willing to bet that none of these things will come to pass, despite the unacceptably dangerous suggestion by Barkley that the Chizik hire was tainted by race.

Rule#5: No Context Allowed.

Barkley played at Auburn. He’s from Alabama. He’s Black. He was involved in the hiring process that led to Jeff Lebo being named as Auburn’s men’s basketball coach. (Lebo, who is White, had a losing record, and of the four finalists, was the only one who had not made the NCAA tournament at a previous coaching stop. The other three finalists were, by the way, Black). Maybe Barkley knows something about race and sports at Auburn. Maybe there’s some context for his comments. To hear Kuselias tell it, all of that is irrelevant. Chizik was a great defensive coordinator at Auburn (I misidentified him as an offensive coordinator in the original post). He’s “familiar.” That’s it. That’s the case. No context, no history, no other considerations besides, presumably, a smoking gun in which the Auburn athletic director were caught on tape using the N-word could justify raising race as an issue. (And apparently ESPN’s own reporting that Gill’s white wife may have been a strike against him is not worthy of comment on Kuselias’ show. Hat Tip: Dwil).

To be clear, Chizik may turn out to be a great coach at Auburn. And Barkley can’t know that race was the number one factor. But the indignant victimology that white sports talk radio indulges in follows a familiar and tired script. And it could use a re-write.

Is it race?

Last week, Auburn University, a premier college football program that as recently as 2004 went 13-0 and finished ranked second in the country, hired Gene Chizik, former head coach of Iowa State as its new football coach. This followed the resignation under pressure of Auburn’s previous coach , ten year veteran Tommy Tuberville. Though Auburn had a tough year in 2008, the Tigers’ head job is a coveted one. Alabama is a football-crazy state and Auburn plays in the nation’s toughest league, the Southeastern conference. The pressure is intense, but so are the rewards, including multi-million dollar annual pay. Chizik had a connection to Auburn – he was the team’s offensive coordinator until he was hired by Iowa State before the start of the 2006 season, including during the great 2004 season.

Iowa State has long been a bottom-feeder in college football, a cellar-dweller in the highly competitive Big 12 conference. Even by Iowa State Cyclones’ standards, however, Chizik’s two seasons there were a disaster – the team went a combined 5-19 (the Cyclones went 18-18 in the final three years under Chizik’s predecessor). Five wins in two years in a major college football program normally gets you fired. In Chizik’s case, however, it was a spring board to an offer from a far more prestigious program. And Charles Barkley, perhaps Auburn’s most famous alum, has been livid:

“I think race was the No. 1 factor…You can say it’s not about race, but you can’t compare the two résumés and say [Chizik] deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst résumé.”

The other resume in question here was that of Turner Gill, an African American who also interviewed for the position. There has been a lot of attention of late to the fact that of 119 football programs in college football’s top division (the FBS), only four have Black head coaches. And Auburn’s decision to pass on Gill in favor of Chizik only adds fuel to the fire. Gill arguably performed the coaching miracle of 2008, leading the heretofore uncompetitive SUNY Buffalo program to a conference championship and a bowl game appearance. Buffalo has only been in the FBS since 1999. And in its first seven seasons, through 2005, its best record was 3-8. Most years, records like 1-11 were the norm. Gill was hired in 2006 and in this, his third season, the team went 8-5 and won its conference title (he has now received an extension and raise from Buffalo).

Whether race was an explicit and self-conscious reason for rejecting Gill is hard to know. Barkley knows the program and the state better than I do, of course. Regardless, in sports, as elsewhere, even if race isn’t an explicit factor, hiring is often a product of networking, insiderism and familiarity and, as a consequence, Blacks still face significant obstacles to getting positions that, on the merits, they’ve earned, because they are often excluded from the kinds of social networks that lead to sought-after positions. This is one reason why cries about affirmative action as “reverse discrimination” are perverse in fundamental respects. Blacks face many informal as well as formal disadvantages in job markets that only explicit interventions can correct. The NFL has improved its hiring situation significantly in the past few years by implementing its own version of affirmative action – the Rooney rule. But the Chizik hire is an example of something about which I have written previously – the persistence of arguably higher standards facing Black athletes and coaches in big-time athletics. Chizik’s employment by Auburn is a reminder that we will be able to say that real progress has been made in hiring when a Black coach with a 5-19 record on his resume can score a major promotion.

They get involved in drugs. So we have got to fix the public school system.”
