In surprising fashion, KFC in a open letter offered Wade a job he can’t refuse.

“It goes without saying we’d love to have you back on our team dishing out the World’s Best Chicken, like you dish out assists on the court,” it said.

““Come serve as an honorary captain at a local KFC drive-thru window. And while we can’t match your most recent salary, we’ll honor your KFC service by making a donation in your name to Colonel’s Scholars, a charity providing young people with much needed scholarships.”

The company said while he can’t match his most recent salary, it could share some of Colonel Sanders’ secrets to making buckets.

The chain is running a scholarship contest using microblogging site Twitter to reach out to a younger generation. Applicants use 140 characters or less to explain why they deserve the $20,000 scholarship.

High school seniors have until November 26 to enter the contest, the chain said in a statement. The tweet should include the hashtag #KFCScholar.

“KFC is asking college hopefuls to tweet why they exemplify Colonel Sanders’ commitment to education and enriching their communities, and why they are deserving of a college scholarship,” the chain said in a statement.

The winner will be announced December 1 and will receive up to $5,000 a year for four years to go toward a bachelor’s degree at an accredited university.

KFC said it awards more than 75 scholarships annually.

“This year, through one of the hottest emerging forms of media, we want to offer students a creative way to realize their dreams of obtaining a college education,” the chain said.

The nation’s largest women’s group doesn’t like it one bit. “It’s so obnoxious to once again be using women’s bodies to sell fundamentally unhealthy products,” says Terry O’Neill, president of the National Organization for Women. What’s more, she says, KFC has forgotten something important: Women make more than half the decisions about what to eat for dinner.

From Gothamist.com:

Last week we got sent a press release about a KFC publicity stunt at the UN, and shrugged it off because we’re not corporate tools who reblog each and every publicity stunt (unless it involves American Apparel). But what makes this one interesting is that the stunt has deeply embarrassed UN security, who allowed a guy dressed like Colonel Sanders into restricted areas of the UN without security clearance. The guy even got a photo op with current president of the United Nations General Assembly, Libya’s Dr. Ali A. Treki!

A publicist for KFC tells us “the Colonel and a photographer were able to talk their way into the UN building to talk to officials about the request that Grilled Nation ‘earn a seat’ as the 193rd UN member state.” Acceptance by the international community is long overdue! How long can the UN keep sitting on its hands?

Security is “still trying to find out exactly what happened,” says Michele Montas, spokeswoman for UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. “It should not have happened—that I will stress, and very strongly. There was some lapse in security and the individual in question… was, on the initiative of one security guard, taken… into the UN.” Perhaps a little free chicken greased the right palm?

KFC has cooked up another free offer to promote its grilled chicken, only this time, it promises, without the unwanted side of rainchecks.

The freebie is set for Monday, when more than 5,000 KFCs will give every U.S. customer a free piece of grilled chicken.

This will be the third time in six months that the chain famous for fried chicken is offering a giveaway to promote its Kentucky Grilled Chicken that debuted nationally last spring.

KFC’s latest freebie will be minus Oprah Winfrey’s star power from a May giveaway and, KFC President Roger Eaton promises, without the snafus when a free grilled chicken coupon on Oprah’s Web site overwhelmed the chain, with some stores running out of the meals.

“Obviously, we had to deal with some tough stuff,” Eaton said.

Still, KFC sees that May promotion, problems and all, as a net success. “We were the talk of the town,” Eaton said.

This time, things will be orderly and efficient, he promised. “We gear the shifts up so we make sure we’ve got the staffing, we make sure we’ve got the chicken,” Eaton said.

Conrad Lyon, a restaurant equity analyst with Global Hunter Securities, said the giveaways reflect a hyper-competitive fast-food sector where price is the biggest draw.

“It comes down to getting those bodies in the door,” he said.

The newest offer is identical to KFC’s first grilled chicken giveaway – a one-day-only offer in April when KFC handed out more than 4 million pieces to launch the product. That chicken handout went smoothly, company officials said.

KFC executives are pinning hopes on grilled chicken to build stronger U.S. sales by winning over health-conscious consumers turned off by the chain’s fried offerings.

KFC is a part of Louisville-based Yum Brands Inc.

This month, Yum Chairman and CEO David C. Novak told industry analysts that grilled chicken gave KFC a badly needed “shot in the arm.” He said grilled chicken accounts for over 30 percent of KFC’s domestic sales.

Still, KFC had a 2 percent drop in sales at stores open at least a year in the third quarter ending Sept. 5.

Larry Miller, a restaurant analyst with RBC Capital Markets, said the sales mix for grilled chicken was high for a new product but KFC’s last-quarter performance was disappointing. He said grilled chicken “needs to drive the overall business, otherwise they’re not going to be any better off.”

“I think people still think it’s fried chicken first and not grilled chicken,” he said.
