U.S. immigration officials said they’re investigating the circumstances of the case involving Jakadrien Lorece Turner. But they insist they followed procedure and found nothing to indicate that the girl wasn’t — as she claimed — a woman from Colombia illegally living in the U.S.

The girl, who ran away from home more than a year ago, was recently found in Bogota, Colombia, by the Dallas Police Department with help from Colombian and U.S. officials.

The Colombian government said late Thursday that the U.S. Embassy had submitted the necessary documents for Jakadrien to return to the U.S, though it was unclear exactly when she might be back.

Her grandmother, Dallas hairstylist Lorene Turner, said she’s hoping Jakadrien will soon be home.

U.S. immigration officials deferred questions to the State Department about when the teen might return. The State Department said it was aware of the case but declined to comment further, citing privacy reasons.

According to the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the girl was enrolled in the country’s “Welcome Home” program after she arrived there. She was given shelter, psychological assistance and a job at a call center, a statement from the agency said. When the Colombian government discovered she was a U.S. citizen, it put her under the care of a welfare program, the statement said.

Her grandmother called the deportation a “big mistake somebody made” and said U.S. officials need to do better.

“She looks like a kid, she acts like a kid. How could they think she wasn’t a kid?” Lorene Turner asked on Thursday.

Jakadrien’s family said she left home in November 2010. Houston police said the girl was arrested on April 2, 2011, for misdemeanor theft in that city and claimed to be Tika Lanay Cortez, a Colombian woman born in 1990.

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement official told The Associated Press on Thursday that the teen claimed to be Cortez throughout the criminal proceedings in Houston and the ensuing deportation process in which an immigration judge ultimately ordered her back to Colombia.

The ICE official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to not being authorized to discuss additional details of the case, said the teenager was interviewed by a representative from the Colombian consulate and that country’s government issued her a travel document to enter Colombia. The ICE official said standard procedure before any deportation is to coordinate with the other country in order to establish that person is from there.

The girl was given Colombian citizenship upon arriving there, the ICE official said.

The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Jakadrien was issued travel documents at the request of the U.S. National Security Agency and with information submitted by U.S. officials. Colombian officials are investigating what kind of verification was conducted by its Houston consulate to issue the temporary passport.

It was not clear if the teen might be charged upon her return for falsifying her identity in a criminal process.

Dallas Police detective C’mon (pronounced Simone) Wingo, the detective in charge of the case, explained that in August she was contacted by the girl’s grandmother, who said Jakadrien had posted “kind of disturbing” messages on a Facebook account where she goes by yet another name.

Wingo said the girl was located in early November through her use of a computer to log into Facebook. Relatives were then put into contact with the U.S. Embassy in Bogota to provide pictures and documents to prove Jakadrien’s identity.

Lorene Turner said she has spent a lot of time tracking down Jakadrien, whose family nickname is Kay-Kay.

“In between customers I’d get on the computer looking for Kay-Kay, I was obsessed,” she said.

She and the teen’s mother, Johnisa Turner, said they did not contact Jakadrien through Facebook and plead for her to come home because they were afraid.

“I didn’t want to scare her or get her in trouble with those who had her,” Lorene Turner said, adding that she feared the girl might have been caught up in human trafficking. “I don’t know. I’m just going crazy. She didn’t have any reason to leave. She lived in a nice home (with her mother and stepfather). We were very close. I don’t know why she left.”

Johnisa Turner was reluctant to go into any details about the deportation, saying she didn’t know anything. She referred calls to her attorney, Ray Jackson, but he could not be immediately reached.

“I was devastated,” she said. “When your child doesn’t come home from school, of course you go to the worst end of the spectrum. I was just hoping that she was alive and well.”

Johnisa Turner said her daughter, a freshman at a new Dallas high school, was experimenting with different hairstyles and clothes but “wasn’t a problem kid.” She said the teen was a good student but when her grades began to slip, her parents took away some of her privileges, including closing down her Facebook account and limiting the time she could listen to music.

Johnisa Turner said she was relieved that Jakadrien has been found and wants her back in Dallas.

“Whatever it is, the past is in the past. I want her home so we can move from this day forward.”

The name belonged to a 22-year-old illegal immigrant from Colombia so immigration officials so she was deported there and lived there for a year despite not speaking Spanish.

Dallas News reports:

Jakadrien, who is now pregnant, was discovered living in Bogotá after one of her Facebook pages was traced to the location.

The girl, who didn’t speak Spanish when she left home, has been in the custody of Colombian authorities since last month at the behest of American officials.

All of the victims appeared to be related, and Grapevine police said they believe the shooter was among the dead. Investigators were meticulously searching the apartment, along with three vehicles parked outside, and didn’t expect to finish until dawn on Monday.

“It appears they had just celebrated Christmas. They had opened their gifts,” Grapevine Police Sgt. Robert Eberling said, adding that the apartment was decorated for the holiday, including a tree.

The four women and three men, aged 18 to 60, were found dead in an adjoining kitchen and living room area when police arrived midday Sunday, shortly after receiving a 911 call in which no one was on the other line, Eberling said. Two handguns were found near the bodies, he said.

None of the victims has been identified, but Eberling said it appears they all died of gunshot wounds. He said authorities still don’t know what sparked the incident.

Grapevine Police Lt. Todd Dearing said investigators believe that the victims were related, though some were visiting and didn’t live in the apartment. He said police are looking for other relatives to inform of the deaths.

“Seven people in one setting in Grapevine, that’s never happened before. Ever,” Dearing said.

Police and firefighters first rushed to the Lincoln Vineyards complex after receiving the open-ended 911 call at about 11:30 a.m., Eberling said.

“There was an open line. No one was saying anything,” he explained.

So police went into the apartment, located in the middle-class neighborhood of Grapevine, not far from the upscale Fort Worth suburb of Colleyville. The apartment was at the back of the complex, overlooking the athletic fields of Colleyville Heritage High School.

But many of the nearby apartments are vacant, and police said no neighbors reported hearing anything on a quiet Christmas morning when many people were not around.

Jose Fernandez, a 35-year-old heavy equipment mechanic who moved to the complex with his family about six months ago, said he always felt safe in the area, but is now afraid to let his 10-year-old son play freely outside.

“This is really outrageous especially on Christmas,” said Fernandez, who was visiting family for the holiday and returned to find several police cars parked outside his home.

“This has shocked everybody. It has scared everybody. I guess something like this can happen anywhere, but seven people dead. It’s just very scary,” he added.

Eberling agreed the area is fairly quiet, noting this would be the first homicide in Grapevine since 2010.

Christy Posch, a flight attendant who moved to the complex about six months ago so her son could attend the high school, said she lives a few buildings away and did not hear any gunshots.

“It’s all families. That’s why I moved here. No burglaries, no nothing,” Posch said.

The man with the expiring contract caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Dan Orlovsky with 19 seconds left, giving the Colts their only lead of the game in a 19-16 victory over AFC South champion Houston 19-16.

It’s the second straight win for the Colts (2-13), who will now have to fight off St. Louis and Minnesota for the No. 1 overall draft pick. Orlovsky, who played the last two seasons with Houston, also won his second straight game after losing his first nine NFL starts.

Houston was in a position to come to Indianapolis and simply tune up for the postseason.

Not a chance.

The Texans looked anything but playoff-ready. They settled for two field goals in the red zone, didn’t convert a third down until getting a lucky bounce late in the fourth quarter, its running game was stymied late and the defense helped the Colts with three penalties on the decisive drive.

Nobody got into the end zone again until Orlovsky took the Colts 78 yards in the final two minutes and finally hooked up with Wayne, who outmaneuvered a defender for the winning score.

In between, Neil Rackers and Adam Vinatieri traded field goals.

It may go down as the final home game for not only Wayne and Orlvosky, but also cornerstones such as Jeff Saturday and Robert Mathis – and maybe even Peyton Manning, though Colts owner Jim Irsay told NFL Network that if Peyton Manning plays in 2012, it will be in Indianapolis.

“If the situation is where he’s back and he’s healthy, then I see him coming back and playing here,” Irsay said before the game. “I think there is a lot of speculation about the draft pick and those sorts of things, but I think what you have to realize is this — is the likes of Peyton Manning going to be seen again? It is not coming, if ever, for a very, very long time. You’re not going to go in this draft or the next draft and get another Peyton Manning.”

Craig Sico says the punitive damage award is symbolic and the family expects none of it will be paid.

The defendant, Don Wilburn Collins, is currently imprisoned on an unrelated sexual assault charge. He was never charged and denies involvement in the 2010 death of 20-year-old Robbie Middleton.

Sico says he asked jurors to make a statement by topping the $145 billion Florida verdict against tobacco companies in 2000.

Neither Collins nor any attorney appeared for him at the civil trial. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice didn’t respond to requests for comment Tuesday.

The children, a 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, were in critical condition Tuesday, Laredo police investigator Joe Baeza said.

The standoff began around 5 p.m. Monday afternoon. Baeza said the woman was speaking with two employees when she pulled out a gun and said she wanted to speak to a supervisor. When the supervisor arrived, he convinced her to let the employees go in exchange for keeping him.

Meanwhile, about 25 other people were moved to safety, police said.

Police negotiators stayed on the phone with the woman throughout the evening, but she kept hanging up. She let the supervisor go unharmed around 7:45, but stayed inside the office with her children. After hanging up the phone around 11:45, police heard three shots, and a SWAT team entered the building. Inside, they found her body and her two wounded children.

The 38-year-old woman had recently moved to the area from Zanesville, Ohio, about 30 miles east of Columbus, Baeza said. She told negotiators about a litany of complaints against state and federal government agencies. It sounded like she had been denied services several months ago, Baeza said, but it wasn’t clear what specifically triggered Monday’s standoff.

“This wasn’t like a knee-jerk reaction,” Baeza said, adding that the woman felt she was owed restitution of some sort.

The children were “very critical” and unconscious when taken from the scene, he said. Their names, along with the name of the woman, were not released by police.

Joe Pressil is suing the Advanced Fertility Center of Texas because he claims that in 2006, his girlfriend who was a stripper named “Sugar,” underwent IVF there using sperm she culled from condoms and brought into the clinic.

Pressil tells Click2Houston that he wasn’t planning to ever have children, but three months after he broke up with his girlfriend she got pregnant. After the twin boys were born, she successfully sued him for child support. The role of race in death penalty sentencing became a major issue in the county when the U.S. Supreme Court halted the execution of Duane Buck, after reviewing the testimony of a psychologist who said during the trial that black people were more likely to commit violence. Buck’s appeal of his pending execution was rejected last week. Although the inmate’s supporters pleaded with Harris County District Attorney Patricia Lykos, she told The Chronicle she has not yet made a decision.

“Before we take any action, we will carefully evaluate the arguments of Mr. Buck’s lawyers and his supporters,” she told the news source. “He will receive fair and thorough consideration of his claims.”

Following that comeback in Game 6 that resulted in a 10-9 win in 11 innings, the Cardinals captured their 11th World Series crown. Only the New York Yankees own more with 27.

Thousands of other inmates in the Texas prison system have been eating fewer meals since April after officials stopped serving lunch on the weekends in some prisons as a way to cut food-service costs. About 23,000 inmates in 36 prisons are eating two meals a day on Saturdays and Sundays instead of three. A meal the system calls brunch is usually served between 5 and 7 a.m., followed by dinner between 4 and 6:30 p.m.

Lettie Fisher and her son, 31-year-old John Fisher Jr., were last seen leaving Lufkin Memorial Medical Center, where Lettie was treated for breast cancer. After leaving the medical center, detectives believe the Fishers went home to pick up their fishing gear and then to Wolf Creek.

On Sept. 22, Lettie Fisher’s 1999 silver Toyota 4Runner was found parked in Magnolia Ridge State Park. According to KPRC, police suspect the vehicle was dumped there by someone else and are investigating the possibility of foul play.

Jay Kimbrough didn’t deny the confrontation detailed in a Texas A&M University police report, which includes the 64-year-old telling a school attorney to “bring it on.” He was escorted off campus and quoted an Army war hero – “I shall return!” – before riding off on his motorcycle.

But the ex-Marine, who has built something of a swashbuckling persona while filling various roles for Perry, said the incident was a matter of A&M officials not being familiar with his personality.

“There was no threat,” Kimbrough said. “This is Texas. Some people have guns when they jog. Some people have pocketknives. It was a joke.”

Packing guns while jogging was a nod to his longtime friend and boss – Perry, the Republican presidential contender who famously said he shot a coyote dead while jogging last year.

Texas A&M police said no charges were being filed against Kimbrough, who was fired Wednesday as deputy chancellor of the A&M system.

Although Kimbrough did not deny the police narrative, he told a far more mild story to the media before A&M released the report late Thursday. Kimbrough’s earlier version conspicuously left out him telling A&M general counsel Ray Bonilla that he would give up his keys and security card, “If anyone is man enough to take them.”

He then added, “Bring it on.”

Later, Kimbrough had another run-in with two plain-clothes officers who were sent to escort him off campus.

“I met Kimbrough at the entrance to the Chancellors suite and identified myself as a University Police Officer,” the report states. “Kimbrough replied, `So am I.’ Kimbrough placed his hand on both my arms and applied slight pressure towards the entrance of the Chancellor’s Suite. I placed my hands on Kimbrough and held my ground.”

Kimbrough didn’t deny that, either, but said he shook the officers’ hands and thanked them. For good measure, Kimbrough left by quoting former Army General Douglas MacArthur: “I shall return.”

Kimbrough said he was frustrated how the university handled the firing, which he caught him completely by surprise. He was let go by A&M chancellor John Sharp, who was appointed to the system’s top position earlier this month.

Sharp is a former classmate of Perry’s at A&M in the 1970s. In an email to system employees Wednesday, Sharp said Kimbrough’s position – which paid $300,000 annually – was no longer needed and thanked him for his service.

Kimbrough said Sharp never spoke to him before he was fired. A&M system spokesman Jason Cook said there would be no further comment on the firing.

“I understand (Sharp’s) authority and responsibility to decide what model he wants. I respect that,” Kimbrough said. “I was frustrated by the process.”

Kimbrough is Perry’s former chief of staff and has been used by the governor in a variety of roles. Kimbrough is widely known as Perry’s clean-up man to fix troubled state agencies.

He was named interim chancellor at A&M in June after the resignation of Mike McKinney, another former Perry chief of staff. The shake-up came during a turbulent time in Texas higher education – particularly at A&M, where faculty railed against regents for their perceived support of controversial classroom reforms.

Perry spokeswoman Lucy Nashed said neither Perry nor his office was aware of the firing until after the fact, and called the situation a personnel matter within the A&M System.

“Jay Kimbrough is a decorated war veteran who has given his life to public service. The governor has the utmost respect for and confidence in both Jay and John Sharp,” Nashed said.

Kimbrough said he’s used the pocketknife “10,000 times” in jest as a prop – his way of saying he’s seen tougher times and things could be worse. The motorcycle-riding, former Marine was wounded in Vietnam and carries something of a tough-guy reputation. He proudly tells the story of how he graduated early so he could enlist and has stayed in public service ever since.

He was fired on his 64th birthday.

Corey Webb, 17, was seen in court footage continuously mumbling as attorneys and judges spoke throughout the trial. At one point, Webb requested to fire his attorney, but changed his mind when the judge informed him that he would have to represent himself.

As District Judge Kerry released the trial for recess, Webb scurried towards a trash can and peed as the judge and others looked in dismay.

The teen plead guilty for the shooting, and faces life in prison. Family members are concerned that Webb may be suffering from some sort of mental disorder.

The business, which boasts that it sells “Krispy Krunchy Chicken, cheap cigs, and lotto tickets, [sic],” is currently seeking a liquor license.

The East Forth Worth Business Association is calling for the community to reject their application, saying it’s not only insensitive, it’s bad for business.

“We need employers to come in here. And employers are not going look to come into East Forth Worth if its ‘Da Hood’,” said the President of the East Forth Worth Business Association.

Humberto Leal, 38, is awaiting a ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court on whether to block his lethal injection in Huntsville. He was sentenced to die for the 1994 rape and murder of 16-year-old Adria Sauceda of San Antonio.

The appeal contends that authorities never told Leal after his arrest that he could seek legal assistance from the Mexican government under an international treaty, and that such assistance would have aided his defense. Leal moved to the U.S. as a toddler.

Leal’s attorneys have support from the White House, the Mexican government and other diplomats who believe the execution should be delayed so his case can be thoroughly reviewed.

“There can be little doubt that if the government of Mexico had been allowed access to Mr. Leal in a timely manner, he would not now be facing execution for a capital murder he did not commit,” Leal’s attorneys told the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles in a clemency request rejected Tuesday. “Unfortunately, Mexico’s assistance came too late to affect the result of Mr. Leal’s capital murder prosecution.”

President Barack Obama’s administration took the unusual step of intervening in a state murder case when it asked the Supreme Court last week to delay Leal’s execution for up to six months. The U.S. solicitor general told the court that Congress needed time to consider legislation that would allow federal courts to review cases of condemned foreign nationals to determine if the lack of consular help made a significant difference in the outcome of their cases.

The legislation, backed by the U.S. State Department and the United Nations, would bring the U.S. into compliance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations provision regarding the arrest of foreign nationals.

Lower courts already rejected the pleas, agreeing with the Texas Attorney General’s office that since the legislation hasn’t been passed and signed into law, it doesn’t apply. At least two measures like it failed earlier in Congress.

“Leal’s argument is nothing but a transparent attempt to evade his impending punishment,” Stephen Hoffman, an assistant attorney general for the state of Texas, told the Supreme Court.

Arturo Sarukhan, Mexico’s ambassador to the U.S., wrote numerous congressional members and Texas officials calling attention to the legislation and the case and urged Gov. Rick Perry to stop the punishment.

Perry had the authority to issue a one-time 30-day reprieve but made no decision while the courts remained involved.

Prosecutors said on the night she was killed, Sauceda was drunk and high on cocaine at an outdoor party in an undeveloped neighborhood of San Antonio and was assaulted by several males. At some point, prosecutors said, Leal showed up and said he knew her parents and would take her home and explain the situation to them.

Witnesses said Leal drove off with Sauceda around 5 a.m. Some partygoers found her brutalized body later that morning and called police, prosecutors said. When officers arrived, they found Sauceda’s head battered by a 30- to 40-pound chunk of asphalt and evidence that she had been bitten, strangled and raped. A large stick that had a screw protruding from it was left in her body.

Leal, a mechanic, was identified as the last person seen with her. He was questioned and arrested.

A witness testified Leal’s brother appeared at the party, agitated that Leal had arrived home bloody and saying he had killed a girl. Testifying during the trial’s punishment phase, Leal acknowledged being intoxicated and doing wrong but said he wasn’t responsible for what prosecutors alleged.

The question of protection for foreign nationals under the international treaty isn’t new.

President George W. Bush in 2005 agreed with an International Court of Justice ruling that Leal and 50 other Mexican-born inmates nationwide should be entitled to new hearings in U.S. courts to determine if their consular rights were violated at the time of their arrests. The Supreme Court later overruled Bush, negating the decision from the Netherlands-based court.

Jose Medellin, condemned for participating in the rape-slayings of two Houston teenage girls, in 2008 raised a Vienna Convention claim similar to the one pending for Leal. It failed and he was executed.

The 14 men, who along with five juvenile boys are facing charges, are scheduled to be in a state district courtroom in Liberty for status updates. The investigation began in December, after one of the girl’s friends told a teacher he had seen a lurid cell phone video that showed the girl being raped in an abandoned trailer.

Authorities say the girl was assaulted on at least five occasions, sometimes by as many as seven or eight young men or boys at a time, from mid-September to early December in Cleveland, a small city about 45 miles northeast of Houston. The suspects range in age from a middle-school student to a 27-year-old, and include two star athletes at the local high school as well as adults with criminal records.

Most of the adult suspects face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child, while four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child. Most have pleaded not guilty and are free on bond, while one, 26-year-old Marcus Porchia, was charged after his arrest with sexually assaulting another girl in an unrelated case.

The case shined a sometimes unflattering spotlight on Cleveland after some in the town of about 9,000 residents suggested the girl was culpable in part for what happened, claiming she wore makeup and looked older. Some also accused her parents, immigrants from Mexico, of not watching her more closely. Those suggestions were sharply criticized by many Cleveland residents and by community and religious groups outside the city.

Also complicating the case was a belief by many in the predominantly black neighborhood where several of the suspects live that the arrests were racially motivated. All of the suspects are black, while the girl is Hispanic.

The girl, now 12, remains in foster care as her parents, who have health problems and moved out of Cleveland after receiving threatening phone calls, work with state child welfare authorities to get her back.

A gag order is preventing those connected to the case from commenting.

Authorities began investigating after the girl’s friend told a teacher he had seen a video that had been passed around among classmates that showed the girl being attacked. Police determined it was recorded inside a mobile home on the city’s northern outskirts.

The girl told investigators she was raped Nov. 28, first at a house near the mobile home and then at the trailer. Indictments allege she also was assaulted in September, October and December.

DALLAS, Tx. — A Dallas mother alleges that her 12-year-old son was bound to a chair with duct tape and beaten by classmates even as a teacher stood by and ignored the attack.

MCKINNEY, Texas — A 14-year-old named Nicholas Cobb has created a non-profit group providing food and other essentials to the city’s homeless.

It started small with toiletries for the homeless, cleaning supplies for their shelters.

Then two years ago, at age 12, he set up Comfort and Joy, a small non-profit with a big goal. Buying winter coats for the people in need. With the help of his Scout troop, he raised 10-thousand dollars and purchased hundreds of coats.

It doesn’t stop there. Nicholas has even bigger plans and hopes set up a system to provide clothing for those with job interviews.

Texas Governor Rick Perry is criticizing President Obama’s trip to Alabama charging that his administration neglected the wildfires that ravaged Texas.

The Republican, long a critic of the president, once again ripped the Obama administration Thursday. This time, he bashed Obama for not responding to an April 16 request for a declaration of emergency in the Lone Star State, where wildfires have destroyed nearly 2 million acres.

Meanwhile, tornadoes that swept across the South  killed more than 300 people on Wednesday and Thursday.

EDOM, Texas — Violent weather ripped through the South for a second straight night, killing one person each in Arkansas and Mississippi, damaging more than 100 homes in a rural Texas community and overturning a trailer at an oil drilling site in Louisiana.

The latest round of severe weather Tuesday night and early Wednesday came a day after a series of powerful storms killed 10 people in Arkansas and one in Mississippi.

The National Weather Service issued a high-risk warning for severe weather in a stretch extending from northeast of Memphis to just northeast of Dallas and covering a large swath of Arkansas. It last issued such a warning on April 16, when dozens of tornadoes hit North Carolina and killed 21 people.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management confirmed early Wednesday that one person died in a storm in Sharp County. Officials said the person was in a home near Arkansas Highway 230 but didn’t know exactly how the person died or whether a tornado had touched down in the area.

In Lafayette County, Mississippi, emergency management director David Shaw said the driver of an 18-wheeler died when his truck hit a tree that had blown down across Mississippi Highway 30 east of Oxford. The driver was not immediately identified.

Dozens of tornado warnings were issued in Arkansas throughout the night. Strong winds peeled part of the roof off of a medical building next to a hospital in West Memphis, near the Tennessee border, but no one was inside.

One person was injured when a storm slammed through the tiny town of Edom some 75 miles east of Dallas late Tuesday, said Fire Chief Eddie Wood. Witnesses described seeing what they thought was a tornado rolling the woman’s mobile home with her inside

“We have major destruction,” said Chuck Allen, Van Zandt County emergency management spokesman. “We have multiple houses damaged or destroyed … easily 100-plus.”

A video shot by the Tyler Morning Telegraph showed emergency responders covering the injured woman to shield her from rain and hail. Her mobile home was reduced to a pile of debris in the road.

As the sun rose Wednesday, residents on the outskirts of the small, rural community started to clear up the damage from the storm. The area was littered with uprooted trees, some had split in half and others landed on homes.

Rhonda Modesitt, 45, said she and her 15-year-old son watched the tornado approach their duplex.

“You could see lumber and stuff swirling in it,” Modesitt said as she swept up broken glass from patio furniture that was smashed in the storm. “You could hear it coming through and then it got real still.”

In West Tennessee, heavy rain prompted the evacuation of a military base near Memphis. Military officials moved 122 personnel from the naval support base at Millington to hotels after a stream began flooding a low-lying section of the base, WMC-TV reported.

Thunderstorms with high winds and possible tornadoes caused tree and power line damage from Bastrop, La., to Tishomingo County in northeastern Mississippi late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning, according to the National Weather Service’s office in Jackson, Miss.

In Mississippi, there were also reports of roof damage to homes and authorities in several counties said trees fell on cars, but no injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service Office in Jackson said thunderstorms with high winds and possible tornadoes caused tree and power line damage from Bastrop, La., to the small community of Cross Roads in Tishomingo County, Miss.

Officials reported minor injuries in northwestern Louisiana when a trailer at an oil drilling site turned over in high winds in Bossier Parish. In nearby Webster Parish, Sheriff’s Deputy Chuck Warford said there were reports of downed trees and power lines and some damage to roofs.

The latest round of storms moved through as communities in much of the region struggled with flooding and damage from earlier twisters. In Arkansas, a tornado smashed Vilonia, just north of Little Rock, on Monday night, ripping the roof off the grocery store, flattening homes and tossing vehicles into the air. Four people were killed in Vilonia, and six died in flooding elsewhere in the state. In Mississippi, a 3-year-old girl was killed when a storm toppled a tree onto her home.

An early warning may have saved Lisa Watson’s life. She packed up her three children and was speeding away from the Black Oak Ranch subdivision in Vilonia when she looked to her left and saw the twister approach. Two of her neighbors died in their mobile homes, and a visiting couple who took shelter in a metal shipping container where the husband stored tools died when the container was blown at least 150 feet into a creek.

Jimmy Talley said his brother, David, told his mother that he and his wife, Katherine, were leaving the mobile home they’d been staying in because they thought the container would be safe.

“He said `I love you, Mom,’ and that’s the last that anybody heard from him,” Jimmy Talley said.

The tornado also reduced the mobile home the couple had been staying in to a pile of boards and belongings. The other victims were Charles Mitchell, 55, and a 63-year-old man whose name has not yet been released.

Faulkner County Judge Preston Scroggin said the tornado tore through an area 3 miles wide and 15 miles long, and he thought more people might have died if the residents hadn’t been receiving warnings about a possible outbreak of tornadoes since the weekend and the local weather office hadn’t issued a warning almost 45 minutes before the twister hit Vilonia.

Other defendants also appeared in court — meaning nearly all of the 14 adults charged in the case went before a judge.

The hearings Monday were brief and businesslike, with the defendants saying little, if anything. Most had family members in the large courtroom, and most defendants left after their individual cases were settled. A few of the defendants and their families stayed throughout the hearings.

‘Please leave me alone’
Family members of the defendants who were in court Monday declined to comment. A gag order in the case is preventing the defendants, as well as defense attorneys, prosecutors and other officials from commenting.

“I don’t want to talk to you people. Please leave me alone,” Anita Ellis Hancock, whose 19-year-old son Timothy Ellis appeared in court Monday, told reporters as they left the courthouse.

The six indicted individuals — Tyrone Ellis, Jr., 19; Devo Green, 20; Carlos Ligons, 22; Jamarcus Napper, 18; Walter Harrison, 26; and Cedrick Scott, 27 — entered their not guilty pleas during arraignment hearings.

One defendant who is in custody — Jared Cruse, 18 — had been scheduled to be in court but did not appear.

In addition to Cruse, McGowen, Harrison, Kelvin King and Scott, also remain in custody. The other defendants are free on bond.

Most of the adults face charges of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Four face a charge of continuous sexual abuse of a child. Five juveniles have also been charged.

Since February, police have arrested men and boys ranging from a middle-school student to a 27-year-old, accusing them of sexually assaulting the girl on at least four occasions starting in September. Those arrested include two of the small town of Cleveland’s star high school athletes as well as adults with criminal records.
The case has divided the 8,000-resident town of Cleveland, located about 40 miles northeast of Houston. A few in the town had expressed doubts about the case, even suggesting authorities should consider culpability on the part of the girl. Many supported the investigation and condemned those accused in the sexual assaults.

Authorities began investigating in December after a friend of the girl told a teacher he had seen a lurid cell phone video that showed her being raped inside a dingy abandoned trailer. The video had been passed around among the 11-year-old girl’s classmates, authorities said.

Police investigators determined the video was recorded inside a mobile home on the city’s northern outskirts. The girl told investigators she was raped on Nov. 28, first at a house near the mobile home and then at the trailer. Indictments in the case allege that in addition to the Nov. 28 attack, the girl also was assaulted on Sept. 15, Oct. 25 and Dec. 1. Each of those times, at least two individuals were involved, authorities said.

Monday’s court hearings took place in Liberty, located about 30 miles southwest of Cleveland.

The 23-year-old worked her way through college to open her burger joint and said the name is mostly a bit of humor in an otherwise serious world.

“Look what’s going on in Japan. It’s like clear this world is not gonna get any better. Why cry and be depressed? The economy is bad. Somebody gotta keep a sense of humor around here,” Evans said.

Authorities believe Tata fled to Nigeria two days after a Feb. 24 fire at her home day care center in Houston killed four children and hurt three others. Tata has been charged with manslaughter, injury to a child and child abandonment amid accusations that she left the youngsters alone at her home day care center while she shopped at a nearby store. Authorities believe the fire was ignited by a stove top burner that had been left on.

“I am glad she decided to make the right decision, which is to return to this country of which she is a citizen in order to face the charges against her,” Lee, D-Texas, said.

The U.S. Marshals Service declined to provide details of Tata’s itinerary, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office declined to comment.

Fire investigators have said they received a tip after the fire that Tata had relatives in Nigeria and might flee.

Her brother, Ron Tata of Houston, told The Associated Press on Saturday that relatives in Nigeria had informed him early that day that his sister had turned herself in to the U.S. Consulate.

“She just felt really, really, really bad about the whole situation, especially for the families. It would be the right thing to do,” he said.

A person answering a telephone call to Ron Tata on Sunday hung up.

News of Tata’s return was bittersweet to Emmanuel Kajoh of the Houston suburb of Cypress, whose daughter Elizabeth died in the fire.

“I buried my daughter and I want to move on,” he said. Tata’s return “will not bring back my daughter. I’m moving on, trying to heal the wound, and that’s why I don’t really want to talk much about it.”

The U.S. Marshals Service, which was leading the search for Tata, had put her on its list of the 15 most wanted fugitives and offered a reward of up to $25,000. The Marshals Service offered no indication Sunday of whether the reward had been claimed or would be paid. Interpol, the international police agency, also had alerted its member countries, including Nigeria, that she was being sought by the United States.

In the same town that a black man was killed by the police over the theft of a pen in 1988,  and has recently had complaints of corruption against 3 black officials; some locals feel that the gang rape will become a “black and white issue”.

Brenda Myers, a family acquaintance and leader of the  Community and Children’s Impact Center said, “It’s segregating our community again. The reaction is anger, devastation”.

One man felt that African-American men are victims of “selective prosecution” in  recent arrests:

“Every adult male that had sex with this child should go to prison, I don’t care what the color is. But I do not believe black males are the only ones that had contact with this young child,” said Quanell X, the leader of Houston’s New Black Panther Party. “It appears to me there’s only been the selective prosecution of one community, which is African American.”

The victim has reportedly been removed from custody from her parents. Police are investigating if there were more people involved in the crime.

The girl told authorities that at least 20 people assaulted her, and the attack was also captured on video. A 19-year-old, Timothy Ellis, lured her into a abandoned trailer where she was ambushed and sexually assaulted by numerous teenagers and men.

“These guys knew she was in middle school,” the girl’s mother, identified only as Maria, told reporters. “You could tell whenever you talked to her. She still loves stuffed teddy bears.”
