OAKLAND, Calif. — Hundreds of concerned parents, students and educators protested a proposed shutdown of 13 Oakland elementary schools at a board meeting Tuesday night.

District authorities say the plan will help maximize resources in a district that is spread thin. Proponents also claim the plan, which would close five schools and consolidate eight others, would help save millions of dollars.
