Well let me be one to say that I am a black female who has always been in the company of white students in my classrooms throughout my entire life and i have always made the honor roll and graduated with honors. this segregating black students like you split up animals at the zoo is absolutely ridiculous. i seriously doubt every black student in that school is doing worse than the white kids and if they are then it’s got to be a problem with the teachers. something is wrong here academically and it’s not all the black kids’ fault.

Funny…WHY do you have to see a seperation of our children from the rest as a comparison to splitting up ‘animals in a zoo’??? BUT just to use your own reference…..When animals in the zoo or in the forests/jungles etc are seperated and in their own groups….THEY PROGRESS, they SURVIVE like that…..Look at the trouble all the kids of today are in and they are all intermingled….now think about the havoc there would be amongst animals if the lions, cheetahs, elephants and yaks were all chillin together….Hmmmmmm

Many will come here and knock this young lady, but I applaud her for at least trying something “new” to attack this problem. While some may argue her methods, none can argue the statistics found in these reports (unless you flat out don’t believe them) as well as her sincerity. It starts at HOME when they are young. There is no excuse why black children should be behind in even something as elementary as reading. By putting them all together, you are not helping them—you’re giving them a reason to socialize in school.

When I get a white or Asian husband and we have kids, we will send them to an all black school. I see mixed kids with black kids all the time.

1st off I want to know how this is acceptable to some of you? The idea of segregating the black students from the other population because they are falling behind is just blatantly racist and its ignorant that the teachers believe that by being around eachother somehow that will boost their self confidence. Case in point: I went to a predominately black school half of my childhood and a predominately white school the other half of my childhood and neither experience necessarily boosted my self confidence. I did notice however when my family moved to CA when I was in highschool that socially my experience was more positive. My peers were Asian, Latino, Black and White and that being in a more cuturally diverse environment really reflected the real world, made me feel more comfortable to just be my true self instead of “fitting in”. It also helped me learn to be around and appreciate other cultures It was a much better experience than my elementary and middle school experience where the school was either mostly white students or mostly black students. At the end of the day however, It really didn’t make a difference who my peers were in relation to my learning. I have always been academically gifted, and I give credit to my parents.

The fact that the majority of the black students at this backwards school are falling behind has GOT to do something with the overall culture of the school they attend. They most likely are not interested or feel accepted by the teachers their peers and/or principle. It may also have to do with the absence of positive black role models in today’s curriculum.

I really think this douche has the wrong idea of how to correct a number of his African American students from falling behind. Separation is not the answer. Why not integrate other cultures, make the curriculum MORE creative and interesting, like stop cutting music out of the learning! Sheesh, just find ways to include the beautiful culture that is Black America so these students have something to relate to and feel more interested and empowered in learning.

Once again, I see society has talked most of the blacks these days into thinking that we just can’t live without them. If any of you have noticed, MOST kids in school clique with and choose to be around their own kind. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Even the animals deal with RELATIVITY. And we can relate, we tend to do BETTER than average. I can’t count how many times I was bored to death in classes waiting on the non english speaking kids to catch up, the other races of kids to ‘GET’ what ‘black history’ is supposed to be about….Fcuk all that…That haulted my own personal progress.

Granted, being among other races didn’t stop my education at all, BUT it didn’t help it either. I didn’t and DON’T need to know other cultures to be a successful adult. GTFOH….As I stated before, I HOPE this method works to some degree and progress is made…Again, ITS ALREADY BEEN PROVEN TO BE A GREAT METHOD…

One more thing, I can’t believe so many BLACK people have a problem with a school pulling their own kids aside in order to help them in a different way. When did it get to be racist for pure attention to be directed at helping blacks? Like my man _A_ asked…WHAT DO YOU SUGGEST INSTEAD? I see a lot of nay saying, but as usual, not one suggestion…..

What might be an even better idea is for black American students to be separated from African and Caribbean students. Black americans and black foreigners don’t get along and black foreigners stick together and flourish with each other too.

The reason black Americans do so poorly is because they kill each other and use whites as an excuse for holding them down.

I don’t see black foreigners complaining and they are treated the worst, yet they STILL succeed in this country.

This will be very interesting. I know exactly where this school is, and the area is predominantly Hispanic actually. So I wonder if they will be segregated too. This is one of those schools that over the years turned majority to minority. If parents feel as though segregating schools are what’s best, they should definitely make sure ALL the resources remain EQUAL.

Ok, put the kid in a school with all of those advantages as the white kid and their still failing? Doesn’t this go against everything the liberal are telling you is the problem in the ghetto schools.And then hear the noncritical thinkers mimicking that nonsense “see houra kids is fail’n cause we aint got computas” Well we know number one problem isn’t the interracial mixing. How then can you reconcile the 50 year failure rate of the 99.9% black ghetto schools? The biggest common denomminator for failure is the home and then the school environment. Take the best white highschool student and go back to when they were and infant and put them in a dysfuctional ghetto home and 9 times out of 10 tell me what you’ll get. I think what they’re doing in a round about way without saying it directly is they’re trying to make up for some of the home failings of those black kids. “Mentoring” ie they’re not getting any educational mentoring at home.

They start at 6 minutes. Then if the student’s grades improve, they are going to make it a permanent separation and say its for the better. Please…….. If I was a student there, I would be outraged. No where within the 2-3 paragraphs was there anything racially charged, moreless suggestive of permanent segregation. Was I the only one that read “Mentoring Program”. I know I wasn’t the only one who took Speech Therapy sessions that took place during regulary scheduled classes.

Anybody who took offense to this article, moreover the approach taken by the principal needs to calm down. Jim Crow is not behind the scenes of this. Be glad that the Department of Education has finally noticed that an African American child could very well learn as much as their non African American counterparts from a strong role model of the same race.

It’s a tricky situation. On 1 hand you have the need to teach boys and girls differently from each other, which is being practiced all around the country. This segregation is actually, it is racist, by definition, but it’s not clear if it was meant maliciously/ intentionally. It is identifying that blacks are inferior, in education, however there are kids of all races who are not performing well, in school, and some of them also don’t have role models. Do THEY get a program? So if only blacks get this, that preferential treatment is racist. Saying that they just want the blacks away from the whites, so the whites can learn better, is not proven here. Such programs should be after school programs, and not forced during normal school hours. ONly those who wish to attend should attend, or you’ll be slowing down even the blacks who do have a chance and really want change. Don’t just lump all of the poor-performing blacks together, that’s not going to get progress.

I’m not sure if this has been said already since I did not read every comment in this forum. I’m my opinion, I do not see this as racist. What I would like to see is an all-girl school for African-American girls. I know Spellman exists, but what I mean is a school for grades K-12 strictly for black girls. They (well…we) are the ones who are treated the worst, and and it’s been like that for generations. The young ones of today need to be taught how to verbally defend themselves against being degraded. Again, just my opinion.

I’m for whatever that works but how can you all say unconditionally that separating black kids is the best way when every ghetto high school in this country that has 90% plus African American student enrollment is failing miserably? The pressure on these kids to fit in and NOT be smart is tremendous, almost all encompassing. How are you all reconciling separating these kids with the facts? Now, as I said before, I think what their actually doing on the sly without saying it is trying to make up for the lack of educational mentoring these kids are not getting at home. On the downlow educational achievement is way down the priority totem pole for many black families. That means if it “ain’t” the top priority it really “ain’t” a priority at all.

Now none of us know for sure that this is the BEST way, BUT it’s a way that hasn’t been tried yet. This could be a great opportunity for black kids to finally receive their TRUE history, and more focus can be put on math and sciences, being is that black kids EXCEL IN THOSE SUBJECTS as well as new teaching methods that appeal to how WE think and learn. There will always be a problem teaching in ONE stale way when everyone doesn’t learn or think the same way either….

I don’t know where you’re from but most inner city black ghetto schools have ALL BLACK student enrollment. I don’t know how you can get blacker than that. It’s a hard pill for most of us to swallow (Black people specially)…but let’s face it: “integration” is dead and perhaps one of the greatest “mistakes” that Black people have made in the past 50-60 years (my personal opinion). It is expected to have most of us view this as an act of segregation, separating Black and white students. actually it wasnt blacks who faught to be around whites. it was the other way around. the government forced intergration. blacks had no problem with segragation. we had our own schools, towns, institutions and were doing fine. problem was the racist whites who were pro segragation, would invade our towns, burn down our buildings, kill men, women and children. the whites wanted segregation, but they didnt want blacks to prosper at the same time.

Absolutely! I had those same EXACT types of teachers knockin me over the head and I appreciate every bit of it right today. Schools don’t teach that anymore and it’s heavily due to integration. Oh word? You know of 100% black enrolled and, AND black staffed schools??? Now I’m 32 years old and have NEVER seen that before in the inner city. I have lived in NY, Philly, CA, Alabama and Detroit and I have yet to come across 100% black staff/students.

In my opinion, if black american music culture made having a college degree sexy instead of thuggery, black men would flood the colleges in droves. a lot of young black men and women are smart. unfortunately, the worst enemy of the young black male is his peers. when I was in high school, black students made fun of and degraded other blacks for excelling in school. there also needs to be restructuring and that its ok to be black and have good grades.

lol..I promised to stay out of this and I’m going to stay true to that. But Kir10, do you really think people believe that a physical separation is all it takes? Come on brother man. If you’re gonna take black children, separate them and administer the same poison, then yes, that’s an exercise in futility, but it’s much deeper than that. This teacher is obviously taking the path of least resistance for now which is taking the black students aside and giving them a dose of something to stimulate their minds. Getting what black students need, included in the overall curriculum DEFINITELY won’t get by school administrators!

I have to say I agree with you about the home being the start…Definately….BUT if home doesn’t offere what the child needs, then what’s wrong with the school system kind of picking that up? My sister is a teacher and she often times provides much more ‘extra’ than what the job says so to speak…..The children respect her for doing so….A child wants to know he/she is cared for sincerely no matter if it comes from school or home…..And by the way, isn’t the school a part of said community that has a hand in the progression of the children?????

you know where I think this stemmed from? I remember back in late ’91 and 92 when young blacks were wearing malcom X shirts and wearing red,black, and green colors. it was sort of a mini trend to be black and call other people “racist”. “its cuz im black” I would hear alot. “buck whitey and the white education”. also the soul patrol was formed. if you didnt adopt the “nigga” mentality, you were a sellout.

This in my opinion poisoned the young black youth at that time because we gave birth to the victimhood mentality. it was a modern day willie lynch. failing in school meant you were showing that you were “black”. black men accoladed each other for prision time served and derided a black amn who obtain a college degree. then you have our music culture. thuggery is considered sexy and an educated brotha with a clean record is looked upon as a square.

we need alot of mental restructuring. we could say it starts at home, but the streets have the greastest influence. I think if the music industry promoted education as being sexy instead of being a revolving door for the penal system, we may break ground.

HHHHAA! Definately something to look at! Home is the backbone, but yes, those streets are something else. When I first decided to go to college, my own family members dubbed me a sell out….I know it is difficult for young people to even want to be ‘smart’ because they want to remain connected to what they believe is being black….Something has to give and show imagery that smart, educated, articulate, successful is an even better example of black….

I couldn’t find any info on only all black teaching staffs k-12 schools. I’m sure a very exist but there is a shortage. You might be right if you are I stand corrected. :lol: If you have any evidence that an all black teaching faculty works, I’d like to see it. It appears to me that environment and peer presure “to achieve or not to achieve” are the main factors.

I second the opinion of the NYU Professor.

I think that if you want to focus on the under-performance of your students, you should focus on them regardless of race. If you section out the black kids because you feel they need a crutch or they need to be taught life skills DURING the hours of school that’s a bit upsetting.

I’d rather see a class trip to a HBCU or school group/ organization devoted to mentoring that has it’s doors open all day during and after school as a resource for students who would need advising. You could have a course open to the historic statistics or the history of african american issues in the United States. BUT THE WHITE KIDS NEED TO HEAR IT TOO. How else do you think people relate or understand each other?
i.e. – Chris Rock’s movie on the Hair Industry.

If you can sit there and say let’s help our own people, how are you different from them?
Your going to devote the resources (teachers) to attend to the needs of black students over the needs of the white students.

And if you’re so concerned about what the black kids are learning on their 20 min/ 6min breaks, What are those white kids doing at that time? Learning about the same things? Or thinking that the black kids need special attention.

I think the report (which is used by all black academics studying black education) is relevant in that it has factual doc**entation of virtually every black male in this country and I specifically pointed out the the academic acheivements of (40%) 1,600,000 black males in “segregated” all black schools vs their acheivement in “nonblack majority” schools. I don’t see how that’s less relevant than info on one school in Chicago graduating 50 kids in any single year. “shrugs”

I hear you, but you’re thinking in a 1960s BLACK AND WHITE world, and today is just not black and white. There are many other ethnicities struggling, for many of the same reasons that blacks do (stereotypically and theoretically). It’s not new wave racist definitions if to give someone preferential treatment just because they’re of a race, and that treatment is meant to empower them. That’s what it is, in definition. So if other groups can’t get the same preferential treatment, that’s racist, by definition. Then lumping all the poor performing blacks together, is racist, because you’re saying all poor, dumb black kids are all the same, when reality each situation should be treated differently, and inspected differently. WHY THEY ARE FAILING is not observed and dealt with, and this mentoring or whatever, is just a bandaid over a gaping hole. You can’t have progress with a ‘blanket’ solution. There are also other ethnicities who pay taxes to make this program happen, who are in the same conditions as these blacks, can they get in the program? Tell me “no”, I dare you. lol

This should be an issue about trying to make all kids who are failing, do better, and I don’t like that the stereotype is the blacks are stupid. You’re looking at it from a low on the totem pole position, and I’m seeing it from a wide angle picture. It’s the economic conditions that poor people live in, that helps mess up their educational opportunities, and being poor is not limited to blacks. So really, you’re doing ALL BLACK PEOPLE complete disservice by saying that only blacks are stupid kids, and certainly not all blacks are in the same positions in life, even if from poor areas. Looking at it, from a grander picture, things like this make it sound like ‘AMERICA IS FALLING BEHIND ON EDUCATION BECAUSE BLACK PEOPLE BRING US DOWN, AND THAT’S WHY WE CAN’T COMPETE WITH CHINA’. I’m already starting to hear the echoes of this kind of talk, and seeing it in articles, it’s black people’s fault that American education sucks- and I’m not liking it. Based on that report it appears to me to be peer pressure “to achieve” and peer pressure “NOT achieve”. No kid wants to be the dummy in a school where everyone is doing fairly well and no kid wants to be the smart kid “act white” in a school where everyone is failing. Of course that goes back to the homes of the schools where the majority of students are failing. IMO

Cali not trying to “be right” but I didn’t know this was about all “black faculty” or is this about schools with “all black students” because I don’t think those schools you mentioned which I’m familiar with have all black faculty. I don’t have a strong opinion on this subject one way or another but I will not dismiss historial factual doc**entation showing “very few children do well in a lot of these racially segregated schools”…….. as irrelevant.

CaliFemme spoke the truth about birth control having a lot to do with how high or low test scores are. Due to the lack of birth control (or the use of it) so many young black girls don’t score well or finish school. The unecessary drama hinders them from adequately performing. This happens to other races here and there, but we have to admit that it occurs more among blacks. We all have seen it one too many times, unfortunately. Can it be stopped? I believe so.

This goes back to my point of young black girls having a school strictly for them. I don’t think they should be so closed off to other races, since they will have to learn to work with them, but they need a school to call their own.

It was whites who needed us. there was a law in alabama where blacks had to sit on the back of the bus. blacks boycotted and started walking and catching rides from other blacks. the bus system lost alot of revenue. as a result, the law was repealed.

They are getting black children together at school, but why can’t it be done AFTER school. What PA is proposing is not segregation but clique-ation. Once they get in a clique, you have group think, you have peer pressure not to do well, and you have distractions based upon not an individuality but as a group.

It starts at home, but the environment after school and at home may instill in these kids that reading a book is too white, getting good grades is too white, etc. We all know some parents who are like this, all of us.

I say, put our children in classes with children of diversity. Our children don’t need a rap, or a drum, or a beat box to do classwork , do homework or study. It didn’t happen in the 1800s, it wasn’t needed in the 1900s and look how fast they came up. There was nothing special in the way those ancestor blacks studied and prospered. But in those days education was the key.

Today’s kids need to see books at home…books that mom/dad read and a quiet place to read books themselves and do their homework. No urban radio, no cable tv.

That was clearly an attempt to throw black men under the bus. If you are gonna separate students then just start another school, I could respect that. As long as we adequately have their His-story textbooks, I’m confident that we can pass all of their Caucasionized Tests!

Sometimes i just dont know about Black people.If this is a first step towards going back to segregation i agree with it .I think some of us are so far removed from reality (or totally brain-washed) that there is no coming back.
I went to all Black schools early in life, then my parents wanted a “better”..(Black people always think better is where the white folks are)… life in the suburbs,which led to predominately white schools.Overall i would consider being around my own a better experience because the teachers could relate to me and had genuine concern.In the white schools it was white kids and white teachers,and trust me white people in general are some of the neediest creatures on earth, so they demanded most of the attention ,it was mostly negative attention given to the Black children.
Bottom-line…id rather my children receive what-ever will help them in their fight against the many “white” obstacles they will face in life…

I agree you may need to take a different approach but why single out a race? I would expect more from our educators to understand making comments/decisions that would target a particular race is wrong even if it is for 6 minutes each day. We are all GOD’s children. Why not pair the students that score well on those test with those that are having problems? Also why wouldn’t you get the parents involved? Educations starts at home and it continues at school. I am not promoting that you need to fix everyone’s home life but you can’t ignore it either. I find it hard to believe that all black students in that school are performing poorly on those standardized test. Promoting segregation to boost grades send a variety of negative messages. One message is the teaches have no idea how to educate their students. If the principal (aka Manager) of the school can not manage the teachers to educate the children then I think it is time to get a new principal. If the Teachers can’t educate their students then you need to evaluate them and determine if they are have the correct skills / approach toward teaching. There is no blame game when comes to teaching our children. We have to get the job done because the children are our future regardless of the color of their skin.

The “resolution” adopted was in response to a “problem” – poor academic achievement. The 6 minutes/day and 20 minutes/month seems more like a motivational moment than segregation. The anger; however, seems to be misguided. Our anger should be at the academic achievement. There appears to be students who are achieving academically at this school; thus, the “school” isn’t the primary issue. The students who are failing are. As in most social problems, there are a myriad of reasons for an outcome. Yet, the responsibility for the outcome of your life rest with you. Be it racism, sexism, lack of resources, etc. in the end you can blame whomever you like. But all the blaming in the world is not going to make you happy. YOU ARE!

People have the right to do what is best for the preservation of their race and heritage. It’s very difficult to do that when you’re forced to do what outside influences “believe” is in your best interest. The fact that Black students need to develop self-respect, self-determination, and a strong sense of self is evident. I don’t think that it is too much to give them Black mentorship for six minutes each day and 20 minutes twice a month.

Its not like they’re being taught to hate anyone, their being encouraged to construct a stronger sense of self. Why is that so wrong? If you want a man to be a man, a woman can’t necessarily do that without there being gaps, at least experience wise. The same for race and ethnicity, a teacher of another race may have the best intentions, but cannot identify with the “life” experience of the student. Only an instructor of that student race can empathize with the reality of that student and provide mentorship in efforts of preparing for life as an Black man or woman living in an America, which is NOT a society that is void of racism.

My question to all of those who appear to be shocked is WHY? Why are you shocked by this? Did you all happen to forget that we are still in AmeriKKKa? I urge you to not be fooled by appearances that serve as a politically correct image at best because when it boils down to it; there is still a line drawn in the sand concerning racial indifferences. Are you ready? The sad part is that we BLACK PEOPLE have given those outside of us our virtual blessing to treat us as third class citizens by the way that we treat one another. We call each other NIGGA as if it’s a badge of honor; but we remain mindful of those terms that speak to the disrespect of those from other cultures and ethnic backgrounds. Until we can gain some perspective as it pertains to a sense of self respect; the only shock we should have is that of our own self hate. I’m not suggesting that we accept racism from all others but if we don’t give all others a reason to respect us then subtle displays of racism and sometimes blatant ones will always be there to smack us in the face. I read these comments week after week, and I see the same people posting complaints on just about everything that is reported on this site. And I continue to see people say how tired they are about our people being treated this way or that, if you are so tired, then you should do something! Start your own movement it really is just that simple get out there in your community and start educating blacks in your area (my people shall perish for lack of knowledge) author GOD. This is the problem, when Dr. King, and Malcolm left us there was know one else to pick up the torch and carry on, and in todays world the message has to be different from the message that Dr. King preached Maybe some of you out there is the next Malcolm, but the world will never no because all we do is complain on a Damn web site rather than going out and showing the world that we have intelligent sisters and brothers who are capable of leading us in the 21st century, hell if they can put someone like Sarah Palin on a soap box then how much worse can you be. Its time for black men and women to get back out there on the battle field and start making some sacrafices for our children we need to stop worrying about self gratification all the time and do something for someone else.

The one major concern that comes to mind is will this separation have an adverse effect on OUR youth, as they are separated during regular school hours because “they need a different approach to teaching”. Will our youth be made to feel as though they are forced to carry yet another stigma with them that they are inferior in the learning environment when in competition with other races? I grew up in very diverse areas, some predominantly white, hispanic, and black and I do KNOW that our youth can and should prosper in any given educational environment, but the need for positive reinforcement is needed. We must validate our children in the home so they are not running around trying to be someone who they are not and hating themselves. We must show our children that being articulate and showing our intelligence is not selling out, is not “acting, talking, or trying to be white” but is what is expected from them. Another concern that crosses my mind is what will happen to the “gifted” or advanced children that are normally separated into classes based on comprehension? Will these specialized time periods reflect that as well? I attended an HBCU and it was a wonderful experience. I also attended a woman’s college and the experience was empowering as well. The fact remains that this program must be clearly planned out and emplemented in such a way that it avoids further stereotyping of our youth and really does promote self awareness and the realization that color does not reflect nor dictate the intelligence of any person. Hard work, determination, and the desire to reach one’s full potential are the true factors that determine a person’s station in life. I do not necessarily believe that our children must be taught in a different manner to achieve greatness, but I do fully support empowering our youth to know that they can/should be as successful as anyone else on standardized tests and in life in general.

The title for this article is inappropriate and has done nothing but re-open a lot of wounds we thought were healed. Yes…(I’m not going to go back and find the person who posted this comment, but it is very true.) we were excelling in our studies when we were taught by our own and surrounded by our peers. We have got to do whatever is necessary to secure our children’s future in the type of economy we are living in now. We have been studied for years, people in education know what works and puts us on top. Making money, by any means necessary has become more important than education. Education needs to be something we encourage our children to pursue with a fervor which has not been seen in recent times. Some of these popular rap artists should give them incentives to do better in school by giving out monetary awards for most-improved and best grade average. If rap is what our children follow, we need to get the rap community involved.

Dr. NAim Akbar states in his book, Know Thyself; “The first function of education is to provide identity”. We as a people have no qlue on who we are and we have passed this on to our children. I’ve had parents remove their children from my after-school program because, “all he be doin is teachin that black stuff” and this parent was ignorant enough to tell this to a white person. This 6minute motivational moment is only for one class level. Before intergration, teachers connected with there children/students. Once we “made it” we abandoned the community and accepted equality in an educational system that had no desire to educate us. Went to Boys and Girls High School in Brooklyn(ALL BLACK) , and loved it! Our graduation rate was in the 90 something percentile.

It gave us “pride!” It was better than the “so-called” HBCU I went to.

I went to a pretty diverse high school (about the same diversity as America overall) and I graduated at the top of my class. Went to an HBCU with 98% blacks and again graduated at the top of my class.

Part of school is about competition. You’re competing against other students around you. The system doesn’t pit one student against another, but if this guy over here turns in a great paper and I turn in an amazing jaw-dropping paper, my paper is going to make his look not so great, because the bar has been raised.

In sports and games, people generally end up playing better or learning to play better when they are playing with people who are better at the sport/game than them. So if the black students there are doing worse overall, they’re going to end up doing even worse in comparison if they’re only in class with other blacks because they won’t be working toward the higher benchmark. They won’t have a real image of how bad or good they’re doing and likely won’t be prepared to compete in the real world against everybody else. Teachers will eventually dumb down the learning and even the brightest students will be less challenged.

They’re not telling the TRUTH… the truth is, White schools lean more towards teaching Networking Skills.

Black schools teach more ACADEMICS.

Those white students learn more the craft of lying, cheating, and stealing ideas.

That’s their METHOD.

i think when it comes to black male students the gender of the class is important,considering the fact that many black boys have grown up with no father figures the basic priciples about how to become a man and what a man role is in life happen to be lost.

young black boys are distracted when young girls are in class with them. they compete for the girls attention rather than compete for better grades.

as much as I hate to admit this BLACK children are behind all the other group’s with the possible exception being Mexican’s and that’s only because of language barrier’s Mexican’s have being alien’s. Who is “THE MAN?” That statement alone is a psychological acceptance of white superiority. If the white man is the “MAN” and the white woman is his woman then blacks must be what? Babies? We do call our homes the “crib.” Indescent1, with all due respect – please stop saying, “The Man.” It sounds ridiculous. Once again, Newsone with these racially loaded article headings designed to invoke un-referenced emotional responses.

It’s not segregation, it’s classification. And classification as an evaluation for educational, socio-economic and even even political purposes is nothing new. However, when this absurd website uses racially sensitive terms like, “segregation,” most of you – almost on impulse and laughable predictability start angrily responding to a story that you don’t even to bother to cross reference or research.

The separation is only for a few of minutes a day (six minutes to be exact)!!! I will repeat, a SIF MINUTES A DAY. That’s HARDLY segregation and far less than the time it takes all the black students to voluntarily separate themselves during lunch by sitting at the “black” table! And that’s not even to their benefit! So PLEASE stop colorizing every single issue you get your hands on that involves black people. Classes are separated by a great many factors; gender (single sex schools), intelligence (AP and Honors classes), Language (ESL) etc. And each classification is for the benefit of the students, at least by perception if nothing else. How is classification by race any different?

There are some inequalities and these inconsistencies need to be addressed. If you sing in the church choir and you have a compromised voice in that choir – you pull that singer OUT and work with that singer to bring THAT singer up to the speed and level of the rest of the choir. Now, if you are going to let your little pride and your ego get in the way because you’re embarrassed by the separation then you will never allow yourself to improve. We’re all so busy screaming racism and looking for racism and blaming racism. It’s absurd!

Pulling the black kids to the side for a few minutes a day for evaluation- if that is going to help improve on test scores of that school’s African American or minority demographic, then I’m all for it. Do I think it’s racism? No, I think it’s an approach to help. You walk into any public school in this country that has a diverse racial make up and you will see the following: black kids fraternizing with themselves, black kids conjured up and seated together at the back of the class, black kids sitting at the “black” lunch table, black kids grouped together in the back of the bus to and from school and now when the school system classifies your kids for evaluation for a couple of minutes a day – black folks defense mechanism kicks in and they start talking about how racist and unfair it is.

Now, do I believe that this technique will work? I don’t know but I do know that black academics were much higher during “segregation” while black students were mentored by esteemed black teachers and the achievement gap was much shorter. I do factor in socio changes and environmental changes over the years which may or may not account for the decrease in black student academic success and attendance. In essence, we perform better academically when separated. I know that’s not what people want to hear but it is something we have to consider. Single sex schools produce better academic results than students of co-ed schools especially in confidence, goals and aspirations, social outlook, personal pride, and self awareness. Now do we want this for our kids or do we just want to moan and groan about how “unfair” something is?

We have to eradicate the “Victim Syndrome” stop thinking the “MAN” is always out to get us!

Ya’LL are So afraid to seperate from your master and his children….there are thousands of all black schools in the world and the majority of them have a greater intellect than white children in the U.S. Ya’ll act like they said they were going to throw the black students out of the school and go teach them in a shack while the other students sit up high in a new highschool. I have said over and over again…that I don’t know whether “desegregation” was the best thing for Black students when it happened….especially when it came to busing students all over town, just to balance out quotas. I was a product of that era…in fact, was attending a school that happened to be all Black, just because the neighborhood was..even though the city had begun desegregation. My family moved to a predominately White neighborhood and I ended up in the second grade, one of two or three Black kids in the whole school. I got there at the start of second semester and those White kids were WAAAYYYY behind where I had been at the other school. I ended up sitting in class, repeating a lot of information I already knew…and bored out my mind.

Before moving, I had a Black teacher who allowed us to progress at our own level…I was reading three grades above level…was advanced in math skills….and was eager to learn as much as I could. This was a regular, neighborhood school…nothing fancy or “progressive”…but this teacher was committed to seeing her students achieve as much and as fast as they could. She worked with those who were slower and less capable as well…..all within the confines of that one class. I never saw that type of commitment again..and my grades began to slip as a result. The White school was very “complimentary” of my knowledge, but did nothing to promote further exploration beyond the planned curriculum.

This is the problem in America–Slavery ended with no real plan for educating a newly freed people. Some managed to succeed nonetheless. However, the majority of the Black race remained impoverished and undereducated. Decade after decade after decade of struggle with the same issue had resulted in an overwhelming number of people dependant on welfare and various subsidies in order to survive. Then the great idea of further separating and dividing the community comes along..where in children are taken from their neighborhoods to uncomfortable and sometimes hostile environments to “learn”…(instead of fixing what was wrong with the under served “Black” schools). Another botched attempt by the government to correct what was wrong with Blacks.

I don’t know if I totally agree with what this school is doing in PA..but like someone has commented here….at least they are doing SOMETHING! There is an absolute crises occurring and without a swift and effective solution…there will be dire ramifications not only to our Black youth..but the country as a whole. THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO WILL BE IN CHARGE WHEN WE ARE NO LONGER ABLE!!!!

I don’t know if it’s bad or good to separate the black children. As far as black children performing below other children, this is one of my fears for our people, our young people going forward. My mother & father always instilled in me to get a good education, go to college get a degree, which I did, but what I see from our oyouger genearation, I am scared to death. Our graduation rates are 50% or less, 70% of black kids are born to udwed mother, most of them no father or not apart of the kids lives, a good % of these mothers have very little education, & this cycle continues to repeat itself. I don’t know how you fix these issues. President Obama said there is a new America forming. Many of our people will not have the skills to get these jobs of the future I am afraid & I think we as a whole need to make a priority of getting an education & doing well in school, instead of many of our kids having dreams of becoming LEbron James, singers, or stars. I am 37 have a 13 year old daughter & to hear how our children talk is scary, many of them have their priorities in the wrong place. i think it starts at home, but our education issues won’t be solved until we find issues to our other problems.

This is not a negative.
But those of you who have been riding the Civil Rights wagon are about to get a rude awakening when you find out that forced integration has been a hinderance to our people economically and educationally and have made us nothing but dependant on others.

First off, I would like to say I agree with what ” Door_Gunner” had to say.
Now a lot of people on here came up in a different generation, if you cannot tell people have changed, especially the children! And not for the better!
A lot of them act like straight animals, especially in the company of the opposite sex! They’ve believe this is cute, and the opposite sex, I’ll call their “cheerleaders” encourage and support their behavior. I won’t say the children have “less intelligence” because we all know they know exactly what they are doing, thanks to MTV, TV, movies, etc…. But I will say their personalities are more abrasive, harsh, a little harder to digest. Why? Because that’s the parents attitudes these days. Apple don’t fall far from the tree. Parents these days shouldn’t be called parents at all, Zookeepers should be more appropiate, because that’s exactly what they keep and are raising, animals!
Now not all are like this, as we know. But the bad thing is Zookeepers send their animals to school with human beings, and that folks, is where the problem lies. Zookeepers come in all shapes and colors, and social classes, their is predjudice there! So do human beings. Human beings are ones who maintain and contribute to a society in a positive way for the benefit of mankind, animals could care less, they act off their basic instincts and only use their brains to benefit themselves.
The kids these days have fallen to the wayside, thanks to great parenting!
And if I was a parent I wouldn’t want my children exposed to these kinds of things. Take for instance, I’ve seen two zookeepers taking their animals to a HARD Rated R movie, and all left with smiles on their faces. I heard the daughter ask the mother the man in the movie kept touching the other man? What! Come on! These kids were like 8 and 7! Child abuse!
Segregation is enevitable unless things change. But I think it should be boys and girls, not by race. Seperate those two and miracles will happen. I say the whole country should go that way. Until kids learn how to behave, especially in High School, their the worst!

I am a black woman and i really DON’T see anything wrong with the separation. The children of slavery/children of Israel NEED to know who they are AND that they ARE to be separated from other nations!. That’s a biblical command that was given to us by the Most High YHWH. Now, this evaluation involves separating these children for only six minutes a day and that’s hardly considered separation, much less segregation. This is being done to “study” the academic fall back of African American students – not to toggle with the idea of segregation. It’s not racist, it’s not controversial as this site is trying to make it out to be. You all do know that segregation is illegal in United States don’t you? It has been since 1954 (Brown vs. Board of Ed.) or are most of you too young to remember that or never bothered to read up on it? But you come in here blabbing away at what you think is racist. This is why we are stagnant people – everyone has a reaction to an issue but no one has any real knowledge of that issue. I think Dr. Frank Meade called that in black people, “The Looking Through The Peephole” syndrome. We don’t get the full picture but swear we know what’s happening behind the closed door.

It is obvious that you are well educated, but just because one isn’t at the top of their academia, doesn’t mean they can’t tell that there is a disparity between the education of races in America. Although I must admit, the situation seems to be changing from a racial divide to more of a financial divide.

The quick answer is supplementary education. Like the SYLVAN Learning Center if one can afford it,……..or sitting with our children and reading up on Brown vs. Board of Ed., and Dr. Frank Meade.

Of course one doesn’t have to be a rocket scientist to recognize the great racial divide, but one must have a working intelligence that extends beyond “perception” to fully differentiate between reality and fantasy, is this racism a copy of an original or an original copy? There has always been a financial divide, it’s that it’s rarely exposed to the public. Our society is full of uneven playing fields but my position is that some of these uneven playing fields are “perceived” and manufactured by our own insecurities and fueld by our reckless and knee jerk reaction to label everything as “racism.”

Supplementary education? That’s perhaps the first intelligent resolve I’ve heard yet. I have one daughter in high school who is well versed in Brown vs. Board of Ed (Civics Class). She’s not quite ready for Dr. Frank Meade, lol. It’s the parents responsibility to further their child’s education. My wife and I do not succ**b to mediocrity by saying “white man’s education, white man school” because of some perceived racial inequality or because some black folks think that pointing out that education is color coded – it makes them Pro-Black.

You know what’s so funny about all this. Countries like India, China, Belarus, Singapore etc. are producing some of the top engineers, mathematicians, computer science, Dr’s in the world, a dime a dozen and NOT one of these school systems are crying out for more blacks or whites to be in their classrooms so that their students can learn how to socialize better or make them better students, yet we somehow feel our children will not develop properly if they aren’t in a mixed environment. Good points! Blacks in America DO live by extremes and absolutes. Problems are conveyed, reactions are predicted but solutions all still seem to stem from the white counterpart. It was not the Collective Black People’s Movement, or the Positive Black Men Coalition or NAACP, or the other dozen positive black organizations in the U.S., who investigated the imbalance in education amongst black kids and other ethnic groups. With the exception of a handful of local city youth movements, there is not enough emphases placed on our children as it relates to education. The investigation of this is once again spearheaded by whites. I’m not yet sure why, but there is an obvious neglect of black youth academics – at least by the black community,

I can’t help but to look at Oprah who is willing to appropriate her millions to 17 different charities that covers everything from HIV awareness, peace programs, music and arts programs for runaways, stuffed animals for toddlers, education of South African girls, animal rescue, etc,. but no support or charter of any organization that helps African American youth education and academics. You’re right, America has a lot of overt racism but also a lot of passive racism, watered down racism, reactionary racism, historical racism (90 year old white women still using the term “Darkie”), and perceived racism. I guess the question is, which one is more damaging to our economic structure and social institution? Part of the confusion is that most of us categorize all these different genres of racism as the same (partially the problem of the website). It’s a lot to take in.

PLEASE NOTE: White schools lean heaviest towards social skills (i.e. networking), black schools lean towards Academics. We in fact, have an unperportionatly high precentage of Black Bankers (i.e. bank managers and executive), as compaired to other races.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not for separate schools, that is not the solution for a world that is constantly moving forward towards an “all involved world”… as we bring ALL COUNTRIES up to speed with everyone else… technologically… and everything else. THIS (what I’m about to say now) IS WHAT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN ALL ALONG PEOPLE… and that is, “ALL” children (black, white, blue, and green) are seeing nothing but images of white people being “happy”, “successful”, “and having just a grand ol’ fuking time”…. which does nothing but strengthen their own (white children’s) self-esteem, and allows them to feel Relaxed in any given environment… that in itself (being relaxed) is a MANDATORY element that MUST be present if you are going to apply All of your Focus, Attention, and Concentration on ANY GIVEN TASK.

SOCIAL RECOGNITION and ACEPTANCE are other key elements that are an integral part to you being able to relax and focus… your peers cannot give you that… unless they know your HISTORY.

I.e. I had little respect for Germans, until I fund out that their real fight was with the Jews, who had horded all of the wealth in Germany… leaving “ALL” natural Germans Citizens living in a life of poverty… the German people formed a secret society (underground), and took back that wealth from the Jews… and then threw those Jews in the got-damn furnace… very sad, but very, very true… and justified.

The majority of people using food stamps today are white (excuse me, but I just had to throw that in there)… and 70% of all crimes are committed by White Males.

What does that have to do with this???

Intergration was not the answer in the first place.

It was the answer for certain aspects but has proven to be incompatible when it comes to academics, educational structures. and secularity.

There is some speculation that “INTERGRATION” is one of the worst things to happen to Black People because when we were segregated, we knew that all we really could depend on was each other, therefore intergration “DIVIDED” our ranks rather than fortify them. They are only using this as a learning tool, and if the experiment has no therapeutic value there should be no difficulty or objection returning back to the standard classroom setting. “THE ONLY EVIDENCE OF LIFE IS GROWTH!” (catch my drift?) I am against segregationIN ANY FORM. People did not die for some Americans (there is no such thing as African Americans) to be of this country and pay for this and fight for this country and pledege to this country and then be a second class citizen or seaprate citizen.
This prinicpal is only doing what he thinks is best to improve all scores for all based on based on best practices from research of some Black educators and White ones too.
Of course, when you have research that proves one thing one way, there is research that proves the opposite.
I find this research that Black kids learn better, are more relaxed and less intimadated as bs.
Many Blacks do adhere to this so expalin how will they cope with others in the job market?
To compete you need to see all.

I have a novel idea, a great idea as to boost the scores of those Black students.
How about they just study. By doing this, it will boost their scores. How about their folks/homes/families,making them study.
This will improve their scores and boost their self-esteem and everything.

It is all about money… and trying to gain dominance in that respect, at all cost… and in anyway that they can.

The best way to manipulate someone is to not try. Isnt a the term African American is used for someone born in Africa then immigrated here?? Do you call white people Euroupean American if not do not call a black person born in the USA African American its insulting and seperating them from the country of our birth. Its true if you study you won’t fall behind. The kids also got to stop folding to peer pressure, because if your group of friends are skipping school or not studying doesn’t mean your kid have to be an idiot like them. You’re partially correct but I think we’re debating semantics now. The term “African American” is not a term that denotes someone born in Africa and migrated to the U.S,. The term is not based on legal status or citizenship, it’s based on genealogy. Anyone who has genetic origin in black Africa (even partial origin) can be considered African American. But since the term was coined originally in the 1600′s when the colonial British first owned African slaves, the term was used when slaves were registered. We got rid of the term and replaced it with “Afro-American” because of it’s ties to slavery. Besides, we thought “Afro American” was more Afrocentric sounding. That was the 60′s. I was born in 68 and in the 70′s, I remember the term “Afro American” being used. Then we adopted the term “African American” again because we realized that “Afro American” made absolutely no sense and it wasn’t politically correct anyway in corporate white America in which we desperately try to assimilate in. As for person(s) born in South “Afrikaa” (notice the spelling in which is how it’s spelled in the Republic of SA) and migrating to the U.S., NO – they re not considered African American. Granted that you are referring to White Afrikaans? If so then the answer is, no. Remember we are not talking about geography or citizenships or even naturalization. We’re talking ancestry and genealogy. A white Afrikaan’s ancestry (blood line) is European (Dutch, German, British, etc), so he or she would be classified correctly and simply as, “Caucasian” which is a safety cushion for whites because the term is ambiguous and covers wide range of possibilities (from any Anglo ethnic group like Germans to any blood religion like Judaism).

Are Segregated Classrooms Better For Black Student Performance?

Before schools were desegregated studies were done over 30 years ago showing black students performing worst in the same classroom with white students. At the same time…black students in a classroom with underperforming black students will also perform poorly due to peer pressure.

Most of the time students(of any race) cheat though, so if you put students in a class with overachievers, they will cheat off of them. Perhaps it is harder for black students to cheat off of white students, so they perform better with high achieving black students.

The sociologist and the other commentors sound like they are suffering from a serious case of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome. True evidence that we suffer from NO sense of ETHNIC/CULTURAL IDENTITY and COOPERATION. We African-Americans are not just a ‘color’ or a ‘race’–we have a history and a culture. We always put ourselves in the position that we need to include and save everybody else including White folks when we need to realize White folks already have the means and mechanisms to do for themselves, we are the ones that lack the insitutional mechanisms to do what is best for our children and ourselves. You can’t help someone else when you fail to help yourself first. We are in a state of emergency and we should have no time talking about saving others when we are literally at our wits end with the issues that plague our communities. White folks would be just fine w/o our help at the moment, we don’t need to tend to MASTA all the time. They have been and continue to be able to take care of themselves, may not be perfectly, but they are doing it. We need to focus at this time on our personal healing, our children’s development and success, and creating the mechanisms we need to be a successful people vs. successful individuals. His commentary on helping White kids is incredible, as if they don’t already get the help they need en masse–better schools, less likely to be tracked to lower curriculum standards, better technology, better teachers, etc… This was for Black children falling behind the rest, including White kids in the same schools.
