From awe-inspiring gold medalist athlete on top of the world to traumatized young woman on suicide watch. That’s the journey we just sent Caster Semenya on—a whirlwind three weeks of cruelty, speculation, and outright invasions of privacy.

From the moment the questions surrounding Semenya’s sex became public, writers and pundits collectively tripped over themselves in the rush to weigh in. “Is it sexist that Semenya is being questioned?” many asked. “Would this be happening if she looked and acted more ‘girly’? What about racism? Would this be happening if she were white? Are the questioners right? Is she, or isn’t he?”

Semenya’s story was a goldmine for the 24-hour news cycle, hitting on all the hot-button issues folks love to bloviate about: racism, sexism, beauty. But in the rush to fit the story into a suitably familiar and inflammatory narrative guaranteed to maximize ratings and readership, the important questions were pushed aside. The big scandal here isn’t whether or not Semenya is intersex, or even whether or not the sex testing should have been conducted at all. It’s the fact that without her knowledge or consent, before any official confirmation of sex test results was made, before it was decided whether she would keep her medals, someone felt they had the right to tell the world her personal business, and the world felt it had the right to read, watch, and discuss. At this point, the only thing anyone actually needs to know is this: How and why were this sex inquiry and its results made public, and who is going to lose his or her job over it?

Because, while whoever leaked the elements of this story certainly did the media a huge favor by handing us what many view as a fascinating freak show to carry us through the August news doldrums, they also helped to tear Semenya down bit by bit, story by story. They ripped the clothes off of her and shoved her naked into the glare of media scrutiny, where we all proceeded to point, poke, and attempt to penetrate her with our speculations and such sensitive headlines as “Semenya Has Internal Testes.” Meanwhile, she was left to learn what should have been private details of her own body from the media, with the entire world watching.

As always with our 24-hour news cycle, though, the beat goes on: We’re off Semenya this week because we’re busy lamenting the loss of “civility” in American society, as demonstrated by the latest pair of buffoons: Kanye West and Joe Wilson. There’s no doubt that there’s something very, very wrong with the way people treat each other these days, but these latest outbursts are just the tip of the iceberg. Everything about the Caster Semenya story has been deeply indecent and uncivil, from the way she has been treated and lied to by the people in her life to the way the media and its consumers have picked over her.

I understand that this is the way the world works now—people make their way onto the national stage and we opine on and dissect the details of their lives. But even if we accept that we now live in a culture of instant celebrity and media feeding frenzies, Semenya is just a young athlete who was doing what she loves, and doing it well. She didn’t offer herself up for this particular flavor of scrutiny and shouldn’t have been subjected to it; certainly not before any official test results were released or made known to her. Unless both media and consumers become more critical about who we subject to our unrelenting gaze and what aspects of people’s lives we feel entitled to know, Semenya won’t be the last innocent person we humiliate and traumatize. Since this began, she has dropped out of a race, required psychological counseling, and is now reportedly so distraught that loved ones fear for her life. All of this because someone lacked the common decency to respect her privacy, and because we all lacked the decency to stop staring.

I agree wholeheartedly with this article. When did it become acceptable to broadcast someone’s medical information/records without their consent? Everytime I go to the doctor (even for my child) they give me a copy of the HIPPA privacy rights – did these not extend to Ms. Semenya? I can’t imagine the pain she’s in right now – the confusion, the embarassment – because she didn’t start out a boy and make a decision to change – she has been raised her whole life as a girl and at this time of transition into womanhood she has a bombshell dropped on her. I wish her the best. Perhaps those that felt fit to broadcast her situation to the world will also feel fit to pay for the massive amounts of therapy she will need.

U dont know anything about my God… he calls that an “Abomination” and if u thoroughly read the “WORD” u will understand anything that is
“Unrighteous” or “Abominal” to God u being a servant gives u the authority to denounce it. I am humbly a servant of the “Word” and anything that is “contrary” to it I am gonna call it out and if this he/she thinks that taking his/her life is greater then repenting of the transgression is self servant and needs to be terminated… The only “DIVINE” thing we have in this world is the “Word” so u need to change your name and get a better understanding before u address a higher intellect…sucka

wow we have become a very sick world, and have the nerve to try and cover evilness with God and religion? This article is well done. Sad how some people judge so harshly but don’t want to be judged themselves. Why is A’hole a character so many of us are ok with playing? If you know nothing else know that Karma is a beast and you do it to yourself.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Da_J_Rok/ Da_J_Rok

I think people really have a bad interpetation between “judgement” and “admonishment” and those who are not in the category to be admonished then righteousness presides over wickedness therefore judgement can be placed as long as it is scriptual. Paul talks about alot of this if take the time to read the bible. If I am saying something wrong then I just like anyone else can be “admonished” according to the doctrine, if u aint got scripture then u need to join a conversation in which u can prove what u talkin about.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mslioness85226/ mslioness85226

I think this is the best article BP has put out yet. There is no abomination here, if a person was born that way then God made them so…. unfortunately US African and White American are so self consciencious we would do anything to hide OUR own shame in ourselves. And it’s funny how Da J Rock can talk about scripture when suicide is considered a sin as well as all the other many sins in the Bible, but he picks that to justify his ignorance. That poor girl and her family will never be the same. I pray she comes back from this a stronger person than ever before. Braver than ever and let’s nothing stand in the way of her accomplishments.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Da_J_Rok/ Da_J_Rok

@ mslioness… common sense away from the bible has to factor in somewhere in the conscience minds of humans…There is no such thing as a “He-She” u are either a man or a woman period. If that is what God would have intended then there would be no need for sex and we would be able reproduce without the opposite gender. So before u make an implication towards “ignorance” combine your human nature knowledge with your divine nature facts.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mslioness85226/ mslioness85226

You are right the DEVIL made her and all the hermaphradites in the world, or better yether mom and dad conjured her up for the reason to race against women and make them look subpar. My goodness have we not learned anything from biology, we can not control the gender/sex of the embryo it just happens to form the way it’s suppose to. There are fish and insects made the same way, we don’t go carrying on about them and wishing them to do. But like most who tweek the bible to have it say what they wish, everyone is entitled to their opinion, I just pray you don’t believe in Karma either enough said.

    Wow.
Sometimes I think religion (or better yet the mis-use of religion) is the most dangerous thing on earth. People want her to kill herself for the way she was born? SMH.
Now as far the article I agree wholeheartedly but I do get a little annoyed when people want to put the blame on the media. To me that is just a cop out, the medial gives us what we ask for. If nobody watched Kanye on Leno, or Taylor on the View, if nobody searched Yahoo, Google or Bing for them, if no one clicked it on YouTube then guess what the media would have to find something else to talk about cause they want you to watch. WE have to take some of the blame for the constant invasions of privacy that are so prevalent today. But WE don’t want to do that cause what does that make us? So instead we blame it on this mysterious demon called the “Media”. Sorry to burst bubbles but the “Media” is just societies mirror. And last I checked the only way to change the reflection in a mirror is the change the actual image.

Being in the spot light comes with a price. This has nothing to do with god nor race. Caster is not the only one to be questioned about gender when it comes to competeting in olympic events. Is their any chance the family had knowledge of caster’s gender? You bet. Did caster believe a fast one could be pulled? Perhaps the rules should have been reviewed. Oh and one more thing……..isnt suicide a private matter? Or is this just another attempt at attention?

I feel so bad for this young lady.

It’s so funny how people can post with the attitude of “Oh Well…that’s just the way it is” Until IT Happens To You/Your Child.
Wake up…it’s the way we make it.

Athletes undergo physical exams before competing…so the true story here is about JEALOUSY. She was not questioned/tested until after she won the race and the reason of questioning was “She looked like a man and pounded her chest after winning the race.” They then went on to state that if she has more/extra testosterone, it wouldn’t be fair to the other competitors.

    Give me a Break!!!
There are a lot of women…girly women…if you tested them @ this very moment, would have elevated Testosterone levels. It’s called Hormonal imbalance.

Look @ Michael Phelps, his body has unusual proportions (torso, armspan, etc.) which was proven to give him an advantage. I never seen anyone question him/his medals…even after he was pictured smoking from the bong!!!

This young lady’s full cooperation mirrors the content of her character.

How can people be so cruel.
If I was her mom…I would have snapped!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ENOCH121/ ENOCH121

LOTS OF BAD SCRIPTURE BEING THROW AROUND ABOUT THIS YOUNG LADY. THE BOOK OF GENESIS SPEAKS OF GOD MAKING MAN, AN IT STATES HE MADE MAN MALE/FEMALE. NOT ONE OR THE OTHER. SHE WAS BORN THIS WAY AND YOU STATE THIS IS AN ABOMINATION TO GOD? SO SHE FEEL ITS OK TO KILL HER FOR THE WAY SHE WAS BORN? OR AS YOU STATE REPENT FOR THE WAY SHE WAS BORN? DA_J_ROK? IF THIS IS WHAT YOU LEARNED FROM THE BIBLE I UNDERSTAND WHY SO MANY PEOPLE DONT ATTEND CHURCH. BROTHER JESUS CAME IN LOVE AN IF WE CAN’T LOVE THIS LADY, HOW CAN WE TRULY SAY WE ARE FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/luscious1956/ luscious1956

I feel so sorry for the young lady. Americans are so judgemental, sexist, bias, and pure racist and pure hate (Wilson’s not ashame of his prejudice) at least he stood up to it:(..) The young lady shouldn’t have been subjected to all the publicity. Shame on the media. What if she would have been white???? What about Susan the American Idol, she’s not that womanily either, can the media check her out???? All BS aside, why does the media hurt, judge, kill people, who do what they love most?? You know what comes arounds goes around, and you too, will be judged by a greater power than people. And money is your root to your evil. Shame, Shame shame…………….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/luscious1956/ luscious1956

Looking at some of the comment posted on this site shows the true ignorance of people, may you burn….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DahCharmer/ DahCharmer

I don’t see why everything have to racist, sexist etc. Yes I’m sorry the young lady. But once you put yourself on the world stage competing against other countries, they have the right to raise certain questions. They did NOT request a sex test after she won the race it was question from she signed up for world championships. If you put yourself on the world stage especially when you are doing well everyone is going to take interest in you worldwide whether negative or positive. I dont blame the media or the council the only one to blame is her country for exposing her this way when they knew before this would or may be an issue. Its the way of the world, you have to look after your own, no one else will.
And for all those that are saying its just hormonal imbalance. Any female athlete thats tested and have even twice much more 3 times the amount of testosterone level as a man will be questioned and that undoubtedly would pose as a disadvantage for the other competitors. Its a first occurrence so theres not a ‘by the book’ method. But it has to be dealt with. Too bad her country have let it being dealt with world wide.

    @ Enoch121
    Thank U @ DahCharmer

The scripture that I posted had to do with the fact that people are saying that he/she is “intersexed” The scripture clearly points out that God doesn’t create “intersexed” Therefore If this so called “intersexed” individual would rather take their life, than to stand up and fight and defend his/her gender then who cares. Its obvious, take away the “sensitive” element and use logic…

And do some research on South Africa, im sure u’ll discover something u never knew before

I don’t believe in “God” per se but whatever force made us created some very beautiful human beings. For some people, the lines got a bit crossed. However, they should not be cast out as “sinners” or defects because they don’t fit your ideal of what a man or woman should be. BTW, when was the last time either of you did squat for your country?

My God Da_j_rok, you really are showing your ignorance all over the place. The Bible is an historical record of a tribe of who knows what origin and whether they even existed. It is not a scientific instrument.

Caster was born with a medical condition known and hermaphrodism and that should have been disclosed before she got into this thing. “She” can present herself as either sex if she chooses, or so I would guess, but that presents various and obvious social problems. Like, which restroom to use?

So, her life is going to be extraordinarily complicated from the get go.

And sure, people can take sympathy with her and allow her participation into whatever realms they choose. But, she must disclose all pertinent information from the start.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/youngflashy90/ youngflashy90

first of all stop quoting scriptures if you don’t know what you talking about…God loves us all and if she was born with a birth defect, that doesn’t mean she’s an abomination, that has absolutely nothing to do with her. An if thats the case.. that means a person with cerebral palsy, leprosy, skin disease and other types of an ailments would be an abomination? right no wrong if she was born like that so what its a birth defect. God doesnt look at the outer appearance he looks at the heart, and if she have a relationship with him… and to make a comment like she should kill herself hmmm…sounds like hatred and that means your not being used of God(how embarrassing) to make a statement like that YALL NEED TO EXAMINE YOURSELF BEFORE YOU PASS JUDGEMENT ON SOMEONE ELSE.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

Da_J_Rok, you say I proved my whole point by saying I guess and then you say
    don’t guess?

I guess I proved yet another point that this clown is a complete moron, capable only of spouting endless nonsense, with his own comments…..Right?

    LOL

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/chynii/ chynii

What really bothers me about this whole situation is that if she had NOT WON, more than likely no one would have questioned her sexuality.

So are we going to gender-test EVERYONE across the board now?, I mean, that would be fair, right?……Under what criteria do we determine if someone needs to be gender-tested? When and how do you determine which athlete is allowed to compete? Do we go by how feminine a man is and how masculine a woman looks? If an athlete wins over and over again, is that when we test? Can you just imagine if ALL athletes were gender-tested, how many would be found to have genetic defects?….believe me, there would be quite a few…….and then what?

Hell, why not just make it all coed contests and that way, everyone can keep their personal business PRIVATE……which it should have been for Ms. Semenya in the first place.

Definitely, her rights have been violated and I hope that she will look into some type of legal recourse to help her through this shame and embarrasment…..but honestly, her life as she knew it, is unfortunately over…..smh.

I have watched this and semi debated her status with a good friend who ran track in high school and college. She is now a track coach. The speculation began due to her late entry into the sport and the major improvements in time from one meet to the next. Track and field is serious competition. When someone improves their time so quick from meet to meet, the speculation about cheating begins. This young lady was obviously born different from most of us. The blame lies squarely on the people around her who let her enter international competition knowing full well that people would question her abilities, if not for gender, then for doping. They have been around longer and have more experience dealing with the politics of track and field. The South African coaches and track federation did her a MAJOR disservice. All she knew is she could run fast.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Dasmine01/ Dasmine01

I fully agree with the writer of this article. The actions displayed towards this young up and coming athlete are totally unconscionable and unacceptable. This is a case of isolation on the part of the Athletics board. It is a violation of privacy on every level. The fact that the tests were being run should have been kept secret. Furthermore, investigation needs to be done to ascertain why they deemed it neccessary to run test on Semanyer. Is it merely a thing of random selection or is there an underlying reason that needs to be digged in? Personally, I believe that her race plays a major factor…the fact that she exhibited such athletic prowess and undeniably would have won every race in this tournament must have been a catalyst to run these tests.Nonetheless, what has been done has been done. The damage has been done and the poor girl has had to endure a traumatic and shattering experience during the past few months. The board should reprimand the individuals responsible for leaking this information to the public. There should also be restitution by those who deemed it appropriate to proceed with these tests. The whole incident is just troubling. It is difficult to understand why this girl had to go through this ordeal. I truly hope that she can rise from this situation a stronger woman. Though she she is scathed for life – I hope that she can get the support and psychological counselling to make it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/SunofAusar/ SunofAusar

I don’t see condemnation…seriously, you believe it is fair that a woman with a man’s physique and chemistry runs track against women that don’t have the same advantages?? Like I said before, the people to blame are the coaches and South African track officials that allowed her to compete knowing how cutthroat international competition is. News today came out that a doctor told the South African coach or track officials she shouldn’t compete because of her “condition”. They bear the ultimate blame for this. It isn’t her fault!!

I don’t believe some of what I’ve been reading. The “Woman” may not have been born with all of the reproductive organs a typical woman should have, but she was born with the most important one–a v****a. She was born, grew up, and has always been recognized as a woman, and should continue to be acknowledged as such. If we start telling women that they shouldn’t be competing in sports because they can’t have babies, then we should also tell homosexual men to stop hoarding all the girls that like to dance in night clubs. What does this have to do with anything. Nothing. That’s the point. A woman’s ovaries and uterus are not what wins her track meets. It’s the actual running.

Armandx99…are you serious??? We can go back and forth about how much a woman she is, that is irrelevant in everyday life. But the bottom line is that she is equipped with male reproductive organs, namely testicles, and her hormone levels, which aid in muscular development and regeneration, are closer to those of a man than woman. Again…is it fair for her to compete with women who don’t have such an elevated testosterone level??

Baby…Name calling aside, obviously you didn’t read a thing I wrote except for what you thought you could make use of in your argument. Trying to personalize the argument is not going to change a damn thing. To make things fair, all the women should be allowed to have the same amount of testosterone. Are you a man runnin with women?? If not, your runnin track is moot.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Da_J_Rok/ Da_J_Rok

I ask all women to take the sensitivity out of your thoughts and use your better judgement. The reason why our bodies were made different is for this very reason alone, so “common sense” lets us know that this is clearly a man who has been altered. Everybody knows this, I want to see a catalog of “DOC**ENTED” cases of this very diagnosis or so they say. If he/she was all that he/she says, then none of the events after would never had taken place, instead it would be an uprise of not only her but all the people that know her fighting for this case, instead u hear a little hear and a little there but nothing persistent. Wake Up

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/single1lookingagain/ single1lookingagain

I think it was wrong the way the situation was handled but, I can understand her sexuality being questioned. The first time I seen her, I thought to myself why are they allowing a young man to run against young ladies. That’s just a part of being human. However I feel that the parents had to have known something was wrong there. How can you not question that? I am a mother and I too would have questioned that had my daughter looked more like a boy than a girl. I wouldn’t want my daughter to go through what this young woman has been through so therefore, I would have taken her myself to get tested much sooner than they did or the team rather. My heart goes out to her because it is not her fault and I really hope she can get past this with the help of GOD. Now she know and hopefully she can get the counseling she need to accept what has happened to her and what she will have to go through with the whole world knowing her personal business. People can be so cruel…
