When I first heard about this I thought the same thing (about the consequences), but to me it was a matter of ends justifying the means. I mean, just like anything that is developed to serve our society and members thereof, there are risks. Birth control, absolutely ANY type of medical treatment, cellphones, even freedom of speech, there is always the risk of negative reation. Just like all those things this invention should at least be available. Let me add this as well:

1. Its a rape, by its definition an attack using force. There’s always the likelihood of being beaten, tortured and/or murdered. I for one would take my chances with the device as either way, HE WILL REMEMBER THE TIME . . .;

2. Lots of victims of so-called non-violent attacks suffer physical, mental, and emotional scars that are just as strong, prominent, and visible as any broken nose, skull fracture, stab wound, cut breast, etc.

Seems to me either way, the victim has to deal with the possibility of coming away from something like that “fractured”. N’est pas?

Btw, I do believe the idea IS that the pain/shock/surprise or whatever will be enough to immobilize the attacker so that the woman can get away. I nigeria, we have some natural ways of discouraging rapist. one is called “Magun” literally meaning thunderbolt. If a man should rape such a woman with magun he would summersault 3 times and die unless there is help from people.I believe such method can be employed to fight such act.

I think many of you are missing the point. It’s says that it has to be removed by a doctor but I don’t believe that the woman has to get it removed by a doctor. Interesting. I’m assuming women can take it out whenever she wants because there is that monthly issue we have.
