Who is to blame for the violence in Jamaica? Is it the police? Is it the infamous drug lord Dudus (also known as Christopher Coke)? Is it Prime Minister Bruce Golding for harboring Dudus for so long? Is it the Jamaican Labour Party for supporting Dudus? Is it the opposition People’s National Party for supporting drug Dons of  their own? Is it the people of Tivoli Gardens who pledged to sacrifice their lives for Dudus? Is it the U.S.A. for producing and selling the guns that are being used in the gun fights and buying the drugs that are made Dudus so rich and powerful?

The answer is all of the above. The culture of Dons and Garrisons and their connections to politicians and political parties have allowed Dudus to become as powerful as he is. The global economic structure has left Jamaica an impoverished country with little ways of earning money besides tourism, music and drugs. This allows drug dealers like Dudus to replace the government as the leading force that provides for poor communities.

The Jamaican police bare a lot of responsibility for the violence. Police in Jamaica have a reputation for killing civilians and brutality. This is one of the reasons for the tense relationship between the police in Jamaica and people in the Garrisons.

The Jamaican Labour Party has protected and empowered Dudus for years, as they did his father Lester Coke, also know as Jim Brown. Still the opposition party, the People’s National Party has its connections to gangsters and garrisons too.

America has its own role in the violence going on in Jamaica. It was the U.S.  who indicted Dudus on criminal charges and demanded that Jamaica arrest him. The USA supported, trained and armed the Shower Posse (which Dudus now heads) to help the JLP fight the PNP in the seventies and eighties, when Jamaica was developing a relationship with Cuba. In many ways the U.S.A. is responsible for Tivoli Gardens becoming the stronghold it is today and Dons like Dudis being as powerful as they are. The guns that are being used by the criminals are being shipped from the US and the US is supplying the Jamaican police with weapons as well. Dudus is rich because of Americans buying drugs not Jamaicans.

Still rather than blaming people for the violence, everybody in Jamaica and the USA should work together to solve the problems. Jamaica must end political corruption and police brutality and, both political parties must abandon the use of Dons and Garrisons to get political support in return for favors.

The USA needs to change its guns laws so drug lords aren’t able to stockpile weaponry to rival policemen in their countries. It also needs to stop its drug intake so these druglords don’t become the biggest support of income to their countries.

The international community must come together to find for countries like Jamaica have economies and ways to generate income other than drugs. All over the third world we see that drugs, guns and poverty always equal violence and killing. Jamaica is a small country and is as much affected by laws in the U.S. as Americans are.

If the U.S. can change its laws on drugs and guns to prohibit men like Dudus from becoming rich drug lords, with small armies that have arsenals of weapons, we can prevent future incidents like the one in Tivol Gardens. If the international community and rich first world nations can change the system of neo-colonialism that leaves third world countries poor and dependent on rich ones, drug dealers could no longer rival governments for power and the cycle of guns, drugs, poverty and violence can finally end.

The US and our Drug Policy are to blame. How many dollars do we have to spend to fight something that many of our people want. Didn’t we learn anything from the prohibition of alcohol. Of course our proliferation of guns doesn’t help either. It would be much cheaper to have treatment centers like we do for alcohol to address people’s failure to use substances in a safe/sustainable manner. The profit is driven up solely because of it’s illegality and there is no oversight over quality and purity as long as it remains illegal. On top of this we have an abundance of people going through the prison industrial complex repeatedly because of their choices to sell drugs as a teenager. Felony records then make it next to impossible to find gainful employment after doing time and the cycle continues.

@Vasco5 – quite a rant, but who says everyone but you is ignorant of Jamaican history, the PNP and JLP aren’t that different, they leadership of both parties grew up going to the same schools and still frequent the same high teas or whatever other social events, they’ve indoctrinated their constituency to support them through violence though its only the poor people getting hurt.

Vasco is right. Jamaican resistance to slavery(largely Asante/Fante slaves) was the main reason that slavery ended.

It is not talked about in U.S schools, but the resistance became so deadly that it was becoming unprofitable and hell on earth for the plantation masters. There were even letters written which u can find that governors of the colony wrote, warning would be slavemasters not to mistreat these slaves because they would kill you.

For those that dont know, Asante Kingdom and the Fante[chiefdoms] were at war with each other constantly. One traded with British and one with Dutch, they traded each other in slaves. Asante was wrecking serious havoc on the Fante and they formed a confederacy in the late 1800′s. As the Fante got cozy with the British, the British started campaigning against the Asante Kingdom. The British realized they made WAY MORE money from trade with Fante when there was peace. So they promised their protection to the Fante(after having mostly defeated the Asante) if they would become a protectorate of Britain. That is how the colonization of Ghana began, and Ghana is actually a country named after Medieval Ghana which was closer to modern day Mali. It is a combination of these two original nations and a few others in the south.

That is ur African history for the day :)

The sad thing is nothing will ever change in Jamaica because Jamaica’s government was bought by the US in the 1970s. Bob Marley tried to stop the violence and he failed. The last prime minister Jamaica had was Manley. That’s until he decided to sell out like the original Maroons. Manley was about to focus on Jamaica’s only resource its people when the US stepped in and prevented him from going forward. No one ever intervened when the US adopted Social Security and Medicare, yet the US has the right to stop other nations from strengthening their economies. Please note that the US stays out of white and most Asian nations domestic affairs. The low-income Jamaicans are oblivious to what is really going on. The middle and upper class Jamaicans could careless. In addition, Americans (Black, White, Chinese, etc) could careless. Jamaica will always be poor and oppressed.

Casey: everybody in Jamaica and the USA should work together to solve the problems.

Frenzy: Uh, no. I’m not lifting a finger or a tax dollar to help. Neither are you.

Casey: Jamaica must end political corruption and police brutality and, both political parties must abandon the use of Dons and Garrisons to get political support in return for favors.

Frenzy: You mean like the U.S. and almost every other country in the world?

Casey: The USA needs to change its guns laws so drug lords aren’t able to stockpile weaponry to rival policemen in their countries.

Frenzy: Change their gun laws to what? You think laws will stop gun trafficking? How naive.

Casey: It also needs to stop its drug intake so these drug lords don’t become the biggest support of income to their countries.

Frenzy: And pray tell how are you going to get humans who’ve been using some form of drugs for thousands of years to just stop? Foolishness.

Casey: The international community must come together to find for countries like Jamaica have economies and ways to generate income other than drugs.

Frenzy: When you say “international community” who are you talking about? China? Australia? Or one of your mythical countries that don’t use drugs?

Casey: All over the third world we see that drugs, guns and poverty always equal violence and killing.

    Frenzy: You don’t say?

Casey: Jamaica is a small country and is as much affected by laws in the U.S. as Americans are.

Frenzy: Yes, Jamaica is small. Thanks for the geography lesson. They’re equally affected by our laws as we are? Man, wish they can pay some of these taxes with that drug money.

Casey: If the U.S. can change its laws on drugs and guns to prohibit men like Dudus from becoming rich drug lords, with small armies that have arsenals of weapons, we can prevent future incidents like the one in Tivol Gardens.

Frenzy: Oh, is that what will prevent “rich” drug lords rather than poor small timers?

Casey: If the international community and rich first world nations can change the system of neo-colonialism that leaves third world countries poor and dependent on rich ones, drug dealers could no longer rival governments for power and the cycle of guns, drugs, poverty and violence can finally end.

Frenzy: Change it to what, Casey? Please tell us of your Utopia, because you seem to want others to figure it out for you…then blame them when you’re not happy with what’s happening. You a fool and in the wrong business, and speaking on subject matter of which you have no idea.

What people also need to understand is that much like other crime organizations throughout history, like the Chinese triads and the Italian mafia, these “Dons” are the ones causing a lot of the problems in Jamaica. Jamaica is not full of bad people…but rather a group who’s hindering progress and a government that hasn’t managed to crack down over the years smh

It breaks my heart that this country can be as strong as any other and can’t figure out how to make their own markets or how to truely unite and organize with other islands to form their own sanctions to prevent the manipulation from other larger countries and threats. They are so damn busy relying on others and won’t do ish for themselves. That’s why drug dealers (and the US) can do as they please.

Jamaican politicians don’t act… They just let things happen when it comes to foreign policy and others controlling their government.

Alot of people including the author of the article are oblivious of the reality of whats actually going on. Reading several articles written by individuals who know nothing of the dynamics of the country and how politics work and they feel as if they are qualified to write articles about a situation that they know noting about. Dudus is a Drug lord were the hell did you get that from? you probale read it somewhere. Dudus is the one who actually gives a f**k about the people in his community. Thats why people are willing to risk their lives to protect him and make sure he is okay. 45 innocent people died and what did they find?? nothing but a couple hand guns do they have dudus in custody no so all that s**t was in vain. The police, Dudus, Prime Minister…they’re just pawns. Its the bigger picture…following their break from Great Britian, like a vast majority of post-colonialist nations, the colonizers took their money with them. The World Bank has not allowed them short-term loans to stabalize their economy and work force. One of their major industries is in bannanas, yet the United States will not trade for Jamaican bannana’s, despite the proximity between the two countries, due to the monopoly Chaquita Bannana has in the US market. They must ship them across the Atlantic to Europe, increasing cost, for a crop that they will not receive a fair price for because Jamaica is an under developed nation…and by who’s hands? US and Britian…so who’s really to blame?….

The media is painting BLACK cities, and countries in a negative light from the Congo to Chicago from Jamaica to Jamaica (NY) we are being manipulated and eradicated. Aids, Drugs and Gun violence are prevalent where we are by DESIGN. None of this is accidental. Covert genocide exists and we are the targets. The sooner we realize this the better. The only solution to the problems that face our communities is to STOP SPENDING on what they want us to. Our DOLLARS mean more to them ( and some of us ) than our LIVES. When we SUPPORT ourselves no MASTER plan will bring US down…

This is what I was trying to find out from a Jamaican acquaintance. I couldn’t figure out why Dudus was being protected by folks in the community. It makes since that they’d protect him if he’s a real peoples’ champion. I hope that’s the case.

    @Trinichamp and red_head88
Yes, yes, and yes. What makes this even worse is that so many of us spend our money in a way that helps oppress ALL of us. Those of us who struggle more feel it the most, and the whole “us/them” and “I’m just enjoyin’ life, I’m not hurtin’ anybody” mentalities –when it comes to other members of the diaspora (and hurtin’ humans, period)– seems to add a sting to it.

Sad to say that is the less fortunate , ignorant and uneducated people that are supporting this criminal. They will continue to harbor this criminal as long as he is supported by these people. Once the money stops rolling in then you will see how fast this all will end. Just like with his father some will get upset enough to turn him in when the money starts to get low or they don’t get any more benefits.I remember when they finally took Jim Brown out, for months he was hiding in a subdivision next to my grandmothers house outside the Kingston.
As for the government so much corruption and scandals that there is unbelievable.Jamaica my find its self ending up like Cuba after all. My x boyfriend is a soldier there and is constantly backing up police when it comes to most crimes. Seems like the violence is becoming more dominant and overall morality is disappearing on a whole. Its seems to be the way of the world. But I pray for my family and friends there and hope this all will end soon!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Y0UNGmama/ Y0UNGmama

is the person who wrote this in high school? Because I’m sure I could have written something like this 4-5 years ago. Jamaica, is corrupt just like the rest of the world, including America. To actually think that any politian, American or not, would stop what is working for them and do what’s in interest for the people, then your crazy! The world is a selfish and dark place, and we are living in the times of it all! I feel for the Jamaicans, but instead of trying to worry about their means of income, they need to worry about the TYPE or LACK of government they currently have. Just throwing money at a situation, doesn’t solve it. That’s silly to think that fixing their economy is the biggest problem Jamaica has. Honestly, you should go back to the chalkboard with that one, cause Jamaica needs a better government first, to establish laws and justice for the people, not a quick patch solution.

[...] Who’s To Blame For The Violence In Jamaica? [...]

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Dusty11/ Dusty11

The author of the above news article did a good job describing the culprits and reasons for the recent drug war in Jamaica. But which governments from the international community will concern themselves about who kills who in a place like Jamaica–considering that ALL governments around the globe are run by self-serving people driven by greed for wealth and power? If there were diamonds, oil fields, uranium, gold, cobalt, etc. in Jamaica, the place would instantly require everybody’s tender attentions and would need to be “rescued”–just as the USA “rescued” Kuwait in 1991 and later Iraq in 2003 (rescued their oil fields, that is). The brutality brought upon the African Continent centuries ago, first by slave mongering Islamic Arabs and then by “Christian” Europeans to enrich themselves–which is how blacks ended up in Jamaica and other parts of the West Indies, Cuba, the Middle East and elsewhere from the get-go –was driven by the same greed for wealth and power that causes humans to brutalize one another today. No human government can dig humanity out of the hole they dug themselves into. The Bible points to only one person who can destroy and remove all corrupt kingdoms or governments, saying: “And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be brought to ruin. And the kingdom itself will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it itself will stand to times indefinite….” (Daniel 2:44)

We as Americans are terribly responsible for the violence in Jamaica. A year ago, I bumped into a high school alum who talked about his trip to Jamaica. He talk about the usual amenities bestowed upon tourists in Jamaica, but his language dripped of the connotation of all things reveived being cheap.

He spoke of seafood feasts that would cost hundreds of dollars in the states costing minimal, if not nothing at all-in Jamaica.

As tourists we consistently go to countries to enjoy splendor exacted through the help of proximal cheap labor, and never question the economic inbalance within our experiences. The shanty towns of Jamaica have been there for years. And the funny thing is that the US Gov’t is ready to take a stand when a drug dealer is feeding people-the same people who feed you and I when we visit Jamaica for barely anthing-in an effort to add volume to the US’ “War On Drugs”.

The US has never questioned the “Economic Apartheid” that has existed in Jamaica-as other countries plagued by a drug fueled economy. I couldn’t care less if you lock up Dodus. My only request is if you are going to lock up the drug dealer feeding the people, please don’t forget to lock up the sham government who lives in luxury-with international subsidies-as their people starve.

I hate to proseltyze. But, the Jamaican government for years has pretended and puppeted to have solutions for the people of Jamaica. As awful as it sounds, the Jamaican drug economy-is justice, “Jim Brown’s” shower posse-is justice-Dodus-is justice.

Illegal elements become justified, when governments refuse to solve the legal, better yet HUMAN needs of its citizens.

Lol @ the blame game, especially blaming America and other countries. The issues go so much deeper than that

I mean seriously, idc if he had an open food market. He’s a major drug dealer, and drugs can hold an entire community, even an entire country back. The impact infesting drugs in an entire community or country can affect an entire generation. Anyone who defends this man should be ashamed, he and all the other crime lords are responsible for a lot of heartache and slow progress

i tell you who’s to blame for the latest bout of violence in jamaica. the government.

at the end of the day, the jamaican government is ultimately responsible for the welfare (i.e. housing, law & order, health, education, roads etc, etc.) of it’s people and island, not some hoodlum by the name of christopher “dudus” coke.

it’s really embarrassing that once again jamaica & violence fit hand in glove and most annoyingly the scenario & situation gives the international media more fuel to add to the fire in terms of jamaica’s stereotypical image and reputation.

this man by the name of christopher “dudus” coke has single handily made a mockery of the jamaican government, the island and his people right in front of the international media. he isn’t really the robin hood character like what some quarters in the media are suggesting.

along with orette bruce golding, christopher “dudus” coke is a traitor to his people and country. please remember 73 people in a very small area of the island and in a very short space of time are now dead. this is direct combination of orette bruce golding’s inability to govern and enforce law and order and christopher “dudus” coke’s desperation for his liberty. so bearing that in mind, you tell me what good is christopher “dudus” coke’s contributions of housing, law & order, health, education, roads etc, etc to these 73 dead souls?

such a sad state of affairs. God bless Jamaica and the it’s people. christopher “dudus” coke YOUR SC** AND I HOPE YOU ROT IN HELL WHEN YOUR MAKER FINALLY COMES FOR YOU!

Russia? you make me sick with the bull crap you believe in an spread because the bottom line is man has the ability to do what ever he wants and if that means being a slave to ignorance then so be it!! the US is not on the hook for what is going done in that hell hole of a country, they claim to be the most relaxed and calm ppl on the earth so why are you trying to put this crap on the United States of America? oh this country is evil that’s it the only one in the world yeah that’s right?!! you full of s**t for real!! grow up an take responsibility for your life and for what it is. the only country doing drugs is the US? hell no!!! how about Finland? Belgium? Holland? Canada? Sweden? you are stupid and I have no respect for you what so ever liar!!!!!!!!!!!!!! who found the island of Jamaica? who is running the island now? sorry ass liar

Well my people I am glad this question came up,listening up lets go back to the foundation on the situation this very deep. Going the history of the number 1 island in West Indies first Jamaica should not have gotten its “Independence” its would have been better of than Cayman’s ecomony which the currency is doing alot better for than USD .Jamaica should let England take back the island and reform it .The education system is not good in Jamaica from Primary to University people have to paid everything its not free like America. Parent in the inner cities can’t afford to send their children to school so they turn to violences ,corrupted and selling drug or who is wearing the latest sneakers and latest car. Every department of the government is Corrupted.Somebody should do something about this and the education system to be free Primary to High school this can fixes the problem..
