It is a thing of joy to see black people doing great things like this. These great black people up here have laid good examples for us to follow. We should emulate them for a better future for black race. The sad thing is that most black parents neglect their duties towards their children.Let’s stop criticizing ourselves in order to move forward. With diligence and hard-work,we will get there.

This is great! I dont have any children right now. But one day i will. and they can see that they can and will succeed in todays world. Men of color, saying that they can. Most of them had the will and strength of God by their side. I’m so proud to be what God has distant me to be.

Not that this award has much merit in the first place, but Barack Obama winning it shreds what little merit it may have had left. Its obvious, this award is more symbol than substance. Nelson Mandela spends 27 years in jail as a political prisoner, and gets the award because he was afflicted with Stockholm’s syndrome? This is not something I will be proud to pass on to my children.

not that this award has much merit in the first place, are you for real???
whats sad is that people like you will never be saticfied, nothing will ever be ok, or good enough and then you will pass that attitude down to your children and where can you get it in the world if you lost the will to fight?? thats sad!

The nobel prize is a huge thing, to the entire world! not only the peace prize but also the other 5 chategories is giving money for research and have so for over a century now, how is that not a huge thing???? the nobel prize dont discriminate, it dont see colors and it dont choose by ethnic backgrounds, how is that NOT a huge thing???

The President seems to have the right perspective as to where he sits among history’s Nobel winners. I was glad that in his speech, he pointed out the ‘ironies’ of accepting his award while he serves as Commander-in-Chief of a nation currently fighting two wars. He’s a very dignified man who seems to have the right ideas about achieving world peace. Time will tell if his policies in Iraq and Afghanistan show how deserving he is for this award. It’s early in his administration, as he also pointed out. Having said that; I am proud that he has taken his place among the previous recipients.

“The belief that peace is desirable is rarely enough. Peace requires responsibility.”

@Ti. Do you mind expanding on your thoughts a bit? you have stated that giving money to research is supposed to be a huge thing in my mind. How much money is actually given to research? What is being researched? What progress has this research made? Your comment suggests one of two things to me. Either, you’re not really sure what the merits are of this prize, and are just impressed by an award you have heard about all your life, but know little or nothing about, or this is just another award like a grammy, an oscar or a Tony, with no real merit. Explain why I shouldn’t view this as nothing more than a popularity contest, when the President was nominated about 3weeks after he took office? What had he done to promote peace? Given some great speeches? Not only has he increased his war effort in Afghanistan, but said he would do so during his campaign (keep in mind, he felt the Afgan war was the right war to fight, it was the Iraq war he was against) but has maintained the same bloodthirsty hawks that were in the previous administration, and we all know how ridiculous even you would have felt it was if GWB was nominated for a “peace prize”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

Secondly, if you notice, most of the Blacks on this list were proponents of “peace” in retaliation to being attacked and brutalized. How is promoting peace defined? Why is it that promoting peace seems to be something different for Black people than others? for instance, MLK is given the same peace prize as Shimon Peres, Yitzhak Rabin, Henry Kissenger and FW DeKlerk have received. I’m having an EXTREMELY difficult time reconciling that. Perhaps you can enlighten me on the obvious contradiction here.

well now your angling it to be about obama which really wasnt my point, I only pointed out that the Nobel prize is a huge thing in general, that u assume that I think its just another award to me is funny since I hardly know anythin about those music awards etc

not sure why u asking me about all the info, since even if I didnt know all I would have to do is google it to appear knowledgable…lol

but since u asked; physics, chemestry, medicine, literature & peace. its been given out since 1901 by a foundation established in Alfred Nobels will and testament, he left almost all his money to go to this annual prize, 31 Swedish kronors at that time which is more than 186 million dollar worth today! updated each winner gets 10 million swedish kronors to dedicate to their continues work in what ever they was nominated and rewarded for, thats about 1,5 million dollars, almost 8 million dollars a year all together!

in 100 years that means 800 million dollars been given to research all over the world to improve the life of EVERYONE, the fact that u say its not a big deal is just sad! it makes me wonder what things in the world u actually think is good???

as far as Obama goes, I can agree the irony in the situation, however I think its a matter of looking at it in a bigger picture, for example would hitler have been defeated without America joining? prob not right, yet cant you say that America did a work for peace BY marching on to Normandie that day? didnt many lifes get saved that would otherwise have been lost? understand what I mean?

either way, something that REAL is ironic tho is this, do you know where all the money in the Nobel foundation comes from?? Nobel invented dynamite and have a patent on it, now that is Irony…=)

and the reason I know this, well, outside of writing my research paper on it last year I am also Swedish and it is something most Scandinavians know about!

either way, I didnt write what I wrote to personally attack you, I just think that what you said was not quite true and I think that with saying its a prize with not much merit it seems your the one comparing it to a music award not me?

either way, people need to stop being so hateful and start seeing the positive in things, and if you do feel something is wrong the only way to change it is to start with yourself and make sure you break the chain so all the negativity is a waist of time…peace out…;-)
