SIERRA LEONE — Women are pouring into hospitals in Sierra Leone since the government waived fees for pregnant women and children. The efforts are having a striking impact, cutting into the mortality rate for pregnant women and reducing malaria death for children. Various countries in sub-saharan Africa have gone to some from of free healthcare and are seeing similar results.
The results in Sierra Leone have been “nothing short of spectacular,” said Robert Yates, a senior health economist in Britain’s Department for International Development, which is paying for almost 40 percent of the $35 million program, with most of the rest coming from donors like the World Bank.
