5 Girls Burnt To Death At Jamaican Correctional Facility

Prime Minister, Bruce Golding, comforts a victim

Five girls were burnt to death and thirteen injured when fire broke out at a Correctional Centre in Alexandra, St Ann, Jamaica, on Friday night.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has given instructions immediately to relocate the inmates of the Armadale Juvenile Correctional Centre.

Ten of the girls who were injured and three with secondary burns have been moved to the Kingston Public Hospital.

According to a GIS release, Golding said a Commission of Enquiry will be ordered to determine exactly what took place. He said retired Court of Appeal president, Paul Harrison, has agreed to be the sole Commissioner and the Commission will begin working once the instruments have been signed by the Governor General.

Meanwhile, Golding said security at the centre has been beefed up and additional correctional officers and police have been put in place. Government will also be taking care of the funeral expenses.

    Sounds like a protest gone wrong. Inmates will set fire in their cells in order to distract guards from a crime taking place, or as a suicidal threat.

    Sad story to hear about.

    and the sad part is that these girls won’t get more then a funeral. not even a nie night because the were labled “criminals”. that’s to bad . i hope jah jah see’s them through.

    This is tragic; of course young people (nor anyon for that matter) should commit crimes and thus be jailed and their freedom restricted to a confined place where such a thing can happen.

    At least they are getting a funeral paid for by the government; fanfare not required.

    I have worked at a facility where young people were on lockdown and WE were responsible all the way for their lives. We signed that paper when we took on the job. Even if a bag of popcorn burnt, we had to get them all out at a drop of a dime, we had a plan to get that done, and some of them could not walk. If they were on lockdown, did the fire start in their living area?? Staff had the key- they were responsible to make sure they got out of their rooms and out the door- then WE could exit… Head count thankyou!
