there is animals everywhere out there and usually the guides are always prepared. im sure they would never hike near any elephants due to their nature of wanting space so im thinking they might not have heard the elephant where ever he was and he was close enough to run in their direction and do damage. many people think they can run a elephant but from possible 30 to 40 meters a elephant can catch up to you and do damage, the only course of action you have is to find a tree or keep criss crossing while you run.
