Eleven years before his final defeat at Waterloo, nine years before his first “official” loss at Leipzig, and even eight years before a rather Pyrrhic victory against Russia, Napoleon got his clock cleaned halfway around the world by a bunch of wild, French-speaking former Africans.

Click here to find out how you can support Haitian earthquake victims.

The year was 1804 and these Africans had been taken by the French as slaves to the isle of Hispaniola.

Now, why they don’t put this “L” on Napoleon’s record is anybody’s guess. Maybe they consider it an “amateur bout.”

In any event, on August 22nd, 1791, a Jamaican-born dude named Dutty Boukman who was a high priest of voodoo (I’m being serious) gave the call one night that it was on and poppin’. Almost from the start, the Africans were led by the brilliant Toussaint L’Ouverture who, while fighting all the time for the Africans, fought strategically alongside almost everybody else at one point or another, including the French. After L’Ouverture was betrayed and imprisoned in France where he eventually died, Jean-Jacques Dessalines took up his mantle and won the whole thing.

On January 1, 1804, Dessalines repped as the new leader under a constitution that was formed in 1801, making Haiti the first independent nation in Latin America, the first Black republic in the western hemisphere, and the only republic in history established as the result of a successful slave rebellion. The republic even took on the name ‘Haiti’ out of respect for the indigenous Arawak people that inhabited the land before everyone else arrived.

The effect that the Haitian revolution had on American slaves was similar to the effect that the Iowa Caucus had on the election of Barack Obama. Suddenly, we believed we could win.

The American slave rebellions of Nat Turner, Denmark Vesey and Gabriel Prosser all came after Haiti’s had started and only Prosser’s came before the Blacks in Haiti had actually won. There can be absolutely no doubt that smart Americans, watching our slave population grow in number, could project the possibility of what happened in Haiti ultimately happening here. It still took a Civil War to convince the idiots though.

So let’s say a prayer for the victims and survivors of yesterday’s 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti.

It is, after all, the least we can do.

if its one country that COULD NOT deal with a earthquake is haiti. before the earquake the corrupt governemnt kept their foot on the people and the vast majority of people have stayed in deperate conditions for a long time.

even thought they gained their independance years before the american black it didnt seem to do any good.why is that?

i hope when these sad days past they will practice more Christian ideals rather than continuing their cultural arts that dwell in black magic, vodoo and evil.

great article by RK Byers on the importance of Haiti to the black world. It can be argued perhaps that without the revolution in Haiti, the movement towards abolition and the end of slavery throughout the entire Atlantic world may not have come as swiftly, if at all. the Haitian Revolution marked the beginning of the end of slavery.

@deshawn121- your uninformed comments only manage to highlight your ignorance. and your insinutation that a natural disaster, caused by shifting tectonic plates, is some kind of divine retribution is beyond disgusting.

with all due respect, to rk byers, but africans have been having revolts since we first landed in the spanish caribbean. as far as north american slave revolts, there were many in new york city(whites joined in) and in virginia(bacon’s rebellion 1676). haiti was successful but wasn’t the first.

Deshawn21….you seriously gotta study history in depth, homie…seriously.

Haiti had the international courts of France declared war against Haiti after they gained independence, the courts claimed Haiti needed to pay them (and French slave holders) back billions of dollars in gold for “French reparations”……..or else France would invade Haiti with by land and sea, EVERY FOLLOWING YEAR.

So basically the white people said “pay us or we will go to war with you”

Do you think the Black people of America could go to war with white people financially or militarily??

We as a community in the US tend to overlook our own people all over globe because they dont reside in the here.As much as I wish, I have more to offer to our people in Haiti and all over globe especially in the time of need.We are still the fortunate ones who rip the benefits of living in a world power country. Therefore, I do believe that the Americas and its people need to take the time to thank our revolutionary ancestors like Toussant L’Ouverture, Jean-Jacques Dessalines and countless unknown heroes who had courage to stand up to their oppressors. In addition, one thing that seems to not mentioned at all in our history books or by the media, are the over 60 million of TAINOS, the original people of the islands, who were GENOCIDE by the europeans. However, our people then worked and lived together with the TAINOS. Even the aforementioned leaders were proud of that heritage both from Afrika and the Tainos. Our present and our future are weave like a quilt with our past. As we continue to take in more characteristics of Europeans we are doomed to extinction. As we continue to act that this tragedy is not connected to our future, then we will continue to contribute to the destruction of our people. My grandfather always told me that everything that you do affects someone else somewhere on this earth. He or she doesnt need to be in your immediate vicinity, and thats the power of God and our spirits. Moreover, Haitians took arms for they believe in true freedom not given by another man,but by God.And it is rightfully our rights to fight and regain that very right God has blessed us with since birth. This is the ideology that we have lost through the conditioning that we are under. As europeans stole our rich spiritual ideologies from KMT and NUBIA.They put a white twist in a black spirituality, and made ownership by calling it Christianity. To where they used it as so called Manifest Destiny and the White Man’s Burden,by conquering, pillaging, act of genocide, mass massacre and raping of the land and its people. This is the same basis that we use today without reasonable doubt to why Haiti has been poor for so long and to the quake calamity of today. One thing that I have observe as Black and Brown people convey such sentiments, is the emotional overturn that borders hatred for their own by using God’s name to cover it up. I am not a religious freak nor I am holier than thou. However, I know hatred sentiments when it is being said even when one consciously doesnt realize it because I used to use words like niggas, b***hes as part of my vocabulary. With that being said, we owe it to the Haitian revolutionaries that all of Americas(North,Central and South) are free.We owe it to every freedom fighters, men and women, to where we are today but the fight is not over it is just beginning. Not only should they have a special place in our hearts, but in our spirits, soul and our lives for we are fortunate to rip the benefits of their struggle. To me this calamity is a sign from mother Nature (mtr ntr) that it is time for us to come home or forever we will be lost.

Rester fort mes gens d’Haïti.Nous retireront de ceci ensemble pour les bénédictions de dieu vous viennent. Merci pour donner l’Haïti mondial.

WHAT DOES RELIGION HAS TO DO WITH THIS EARTHQUAKE ????

You’re fabulating ! Stop being blinded with religion !!! This earthquake happened because Haiti is between two tectonic plates (Caribbean plate and North-American plate) and immense lithospheric pressure that has developed between them over the years suddenly released !

Neither divine nor evil, this is Planet Earth’s physics !

    Wow !!!

I cannot believe we have so many idiots in America. There is no Black History without the involvement of what happened in Haiti and make you black all over the world who you are today. We celebrate African American History not Black History. For those of you Idiots who believe born in America mean you are a different blacks from the originary blacks from the Mainland, and the Panafrican blacks from the caribbbean where it all started. Ofcoiurse, History was written by whites, why they called you African American, and not called themselves European Whites, we both were being brought here either from Europe or Africa. So many people with so little understanding in this world, it’s why we are still fighting the fight after winning the price. The World owed Haiti, specially US African American. Since you don’t know s**t about Black History, the first Black men were being brought from Africa to Haiti who at the time called Hispaniola ( Little Spain) after Christopher Columbus who was Italian not a real Navigator who was on his way to the Far East ended up there in Cuba on October 1492. The Island who at the time lived by Indians became enslaved by Columbus who the Whites portraited as a discovery. How could it even be a discovery while the Indians were already living there. Same thing to day Why we are being called African American and the Whites not European American. After 2 years the whole race vanished after Columbus started slavery on them by making them working nights and days digging for gold. Columbus started Slavery, it did not start in America for those of you Idiots who keep reading American History written by Whites. The first black men arrived in Hispaniola( Haiti) who at the time name by The Colonials in 1503 . It’s where these black slaves started blacks freedom ok. Toussait Louverture, Dessalines who fought and gained freedom over Napoleon’s army. They united as one group while they were fighting among themselves divided the Island in 4 regions governed by 4 powerful general. “United we are strong “was the motto of their fight. Same thing we are fighting today after they fought to unite all blacks. Haiti fought for USA freedom against The British. Therefor, America also owed Haiti a whole bunch of grattitude. The only black nation who helped America gained freedom. You need to understand what happened in Haiti was a slap in every white man’s face. Haiti showed the world blacks could govern themselves and they did it proudly. Ofcourse, France, America, Brattain don’t want Haiti to prosper, they want the first Black Republic to struggle to show US black men, we can only make it with White Country’s help. For those of you Idiots, Black History doesn’t start after our great Martin Luther King Junior’s March but it sarted in Haiti in 1503 ok. You think about what we Blacks went through to gain a few steps in America in 1960′s. What did you think of those Slaves in Haiti who started and in 1803 fought Napoleon’s Army and gained freedom for all blacks. It took lots of Balls to fight the White Colonials at the time they did not want what happened in Haiti to be a ” March a suivre” a model to follow by upcoming Blacks. Just like we are fighting to keep Martin Luther King’s dream alive, we should fight to keep Haiti alive as the Point of freedom for all Blacks whether it’s African American, Panamerican or africans living in the Mainland. It can only happen unless we demand for History to be rewritten, and fairly portraited Columbus as the one who started slavery, and gave those Poor slaves who gave their lives in Haiti “Hispaniola” the credit deserved. I rest my case
