Colin Powell Says Black Men Need Mentoring (thumbnail)

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell is using his platform to pay it forward. The statesman donated $5 million to his alma mater, the City College of New York in Harlem. Powell graduated from CCNY in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in geology. Fifty-five years after the Harlem native graduated from the college, the institution decided to create the Colin L. Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership in his honor.

The school, which was named after Powell in April, will house the institution’s political science, sociology, psychology, and anthropology departments. Powell’s $5 million donation has increased the school’s campaign fund to $44 million.

This isn’t the first time that Powell has given a generous gift to his alma mater. He has donated $2 million to CCNY in the past.
