The Freedman's Savings and Trust Company, better known as the Freedman's Savings Bank, was a corporation established in 1865 by the U.S. Congress to help newly freed Blacks gain financial footing.
The Freedman's Bank was established in 1865 to help foment wealth-building for nearly four million newly freed slaves. It closed in 1874.
