KINGSTON, Jamaica-Jamaican police are denying reports that reggae star Vybz Kartel, real name Adidja Palmer has escaped from prison after being charged with two murders.

According to reports, 12 officers were injured and one died after Vybz and seven other prisoners held up guards at gunpoint before taking officers’ clothing and car keys to escape. Jamaican police told the Jamaica Observer Vybz did not escape from prison and that the story was made up.

The Jamaica Observer reports:

Assistant Commissioner of Police Les Green told the Observer early this morning that he had no knowledge of the reported jail break.

“I know nothing about that. If that had taken place I would would certainly have known,” Green said.

Police at Denham Town Police station, the closest police station to the remand centre were also unaware of the reports as was the Constabulary Communication Network who also claimed ignorance of any jail break.

“It may be an attempt by his cronies to keep him in the news but they don’t need to spread rumours to do that because he will be in the news for quite some time,” one cop told the Observer.

MTV UK had reported:

It is reported that Kartel and several other prisoners managed to take control of the prison shortly after 1am local time this morning (30/11/11), taking clothes and keys from guards before escaping in a prison maintenance pickup truck at approximately 1.45am.

One police officer is thought to have died of a heart attack during the escape with at least twelve others injured, including two who were shot with guns apparently smuggled into the prison ahead of the raid.
