TV One Summer 2012 TCA Panel
Educator Steve Perry joined Roland Martin briefly on “NewsOne Now” Thursday. The two talked about images of black beauty and connected over both being asked by CNN to cut their hair when they were contributors to the network, presumably to make it more presentable to white viewers.

“We went through it at CNN,” Martin said to Perry,” when they were trying to change how a brother looked, how a brother talked. Folks were trying to get you to change your hair.”

Perry quickly backed up Martin’s claims. “Literally asked me to shave my hair,” he said. Martin went on to say that they were told their hairstyles didn’t fit “the look.”

Listen to Perry’s full comments below.

Be sure to listen to “NewsOne Now” with Roland Martin, weekdays at 7 a.m. EST and watch at 9 a.m. EST on TV One.
