It was the summer of 2003, and Samuel Barnes’ music career was reaching new heights.

As ‘Tone’ of the Track Masters production duo, Barnes had already produced 20 platinum records and worked with Michael Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Jay-Z and 50 Cent.

But one night while he was making another hit in the studio, Barnes received some frightening news.

His wife and children, just 7 and 9 at the time, had been robbed at gunpoint in their Grymes Hill home on Staten Island. The assailants made off with more than $100,000 in stolen jewelry and clothes; they were arrested a couple of days later, and cops recovered $90,000 worth of the stolen gems.

Barnes’ wife thought it would be best to move, and shortly thereafter the family relocated to New Jersey, where they still live.

But the move left Barnes in a crossroads of another kind. It was supposed to be the second season for his Staten Island Hurricanes youth football program, which he’d just started the year before.
