Ok… show of hands, which black people here actually read that magazine? Hmm anyone? That’s the point, it’s not for us. That’s the statement it’s about, just like Redbook is not for me, as a man. They’re appealing to their base (demographic), white women. They don’t want to send the message “the blacks and ethnic latinos are coming!”. I know, I know, we all think that when whites address ‘women’, that they mean our women too, but they don’t! They couldn’t give a damn about our women when they talk that pro-female agendas, media-outlets, etc, so our women need to stop acting like N.O.W. gives a damn about us either. It’s why Oprah throws her all black feminist parties each year, she knows the deal. Their female mags are for THEM, not our women, just like Ebony or Sister to Sister is not for them- if you don’t count Fancy from the Jamie Foxx show parading her white babies on the cover of Ebony last year, which was made for all the black women who have the Doll Test complex. They have their demographic that they market to, just like we do, can’t hate.
On a side note, yes I thought that they’d at least throw Zoe Saldana in there (even though she’s Domi she’s still black), just because she’s dark in skin, petite, and with real hair on her head, but damn not even her. So it’s clear, it’s not for you!

As a young,black,american, I’m slightly annoyed with the cover. But even ore annoyed with the reaction. I want to believe that because we put so much emphasis on color, we would put alot of energy into doing it our way.Why should it matter whats on a magazine that you dont read unless its something you feel shouldn’t be there. Black people need to own things. COLLECTIVELY, as black people we should stop complaining and move towards goals for US. WHEN are many of US finally going to realize that this society/nation was NOT predicated or inclusive of the interests of our BLACK people? The “euro-clowns”, etc. have done everything that they can to let our race see this. We need to own magazines, websites and other channels of promotion for talented African American entertainers. He who controls the vehicle of communication ultimately determines the message that is being communicated. And he who has the gold rules. Additionally, we should be the ones in position to raise money to green light new films. When we are making the decisions, the outcomes tend to have an element of ethnic equality that you don’t usually see in traditional Hollywood portrayals.

Is this cover racist? Absolutely. Is it shocking or surprising? Only if your head is up your azz! Should this piss Black people off? Don’t we have FAR MORE PRESSING ISSUES? Not sure where you got that definition, but it is incorrect. What you have described there is White Supremacy, Racism is a verb, and it’s basically the act of subjecting others to your WS doctrine, in all aspects of life. Secondly, slavery was not about racism is was PRIMARILY about economics. It was free labor. You go to any company today and you will see the biggest expenditures is usually associated with labor costs. If you read the beginnings of slave history, you will find, that before us, other groups were used, but proved to be less durable than the mighty black man. These people weren’t even above enslaving their own, but showed some humanity by letting them work their way towards freedom, aka Indentured slaves. Why I say Racism is not our fight, or shouldn’t be our fight, is because, it will be almost as futile as the war on drugs or the war on terror. The reasons why those wars can’t be won, is because there is no clear and identifiable target. Same holds true to a racist mind. Most white people don’t even consider themselves racist, partly due to the fact that they simply don’t know what racism or better yet, white supremacy is. They associate WS with KKK or NeoNazis. Those groups are the extreme, and I would agree that the majority are probably not that extreme but are just as dangerous nonetheless.

Do you think the Photographer or the board at Vanity Fair think they are racist? of course not, because they would be quick to show you how many black employees they have, or how many black charities they have given to in the past etc. The point is, in order to effectively change the mindset of a person, it’s better to change their viewpoint. We are 100 years up from the civil rights movement, and WS and racism is just as prevalent if not more so. Obviously, all the marches, sit in’s, pray in’s, civil disobedience demonstrations has had no effect. Next step, lets clean up our communities to the point where the WS ideology is put to bed naturally. You can’t feel superior to me, if my community is outshining yours. But as long as these people can point to these things that plague our community (which as we know is happening in theirs as well) and exaggerate it, they will always breed a superior mindset in their own, while conversely breeding an inferior one among us.

Another note. I call this cover racist because it actively sought to promote their own, while overlook others. I’m in NO WAY upset about it, nor do I share the same feelings as the writer of this blog. My attitude is, who gives a damn? This is a non issue. We have bigger problems to deal with. @Gigi_Ambition. Again, let me clear up some confusion that I myself caused. I said economics was the PRIMARY reason for slavery and I also said slavery was not about racism which was inaccurate. My point was it wasn’t the primary reason, and that those white slave owners would have used their own people, had they been durable enough to handle the rigors of that type of treatment. I apologize for the confusion there. Now, let me simply ask you this. How exactly does one fight racism? You have offered up many of your perspectives (which I respect, even though I disagree with most of them) on the issue, now I’m willing to hear you outline a plan that can actually “fight” it effectively? For the record, what I’m suggesting does fight racism as a residual effect, but it’s not the main target. In other words, if my plan were to come to pass, racism would no longer exist.

Suggestion is to actually look, listen and do something. I hear you GiGi_Ambition…See I actually subscribe to his philosophy of listening to the message rather than the language. If you ever listened to The Hon. Elijah Muhammad, or even Khalid Muhammad, and get caught up in the language or articulation used or whether or not the fire will offend some, you may miss the jewels contained in the speech. I personally don’t get caught up in delivery, just the value of what’s being said. We have to keep in mind, that we come with a wide array of personalities and experiences, and we shouldn’t let THAT become a barrier. I barely got out of high school, and I realize my grammar and word usage is not the greatest, and I think it would be a shame to hold that against me, or dismiss my opinion due to that. Oh, no..I agree with you, far too many people indeed, get caught up in that type of thinking, and far too often, it’s the reason for artificial divisions among us. The question is, is that there fault our our own? I say it’s my fault if I let something so insignificant, get in the way. If someone is going to dismiss me, because I didn’t attend Harvard, Yale or even a community college, would be making a HUGE mistake. I’m fully equipped with a skill set that isn’t a part of any curriculum and that is, comprehension. You really can’t teach that, that takes a willingness on the individuals part, to look at arguments from your own perspectives, then make an honest effort to try to see the other person’s viewpoint, THEN draw a conclusion. At the risk of sounding c**ky, I’m very good at that. I’m an excellent listener, and I tend to ask lots of questions, to make sure I’m understanding someone’s views. This is why I can hold a conversation with almost anyone. What I don’t know, I’m willing to sit back and listen, and where ever I feel I can add a valuable contribution, if only to inspire thought, I will do that as well. There are a few people I have come across on these blogs that have sparked thought with me, and sent me on some paths of research, whether it was learning something new, or going deeper into something I really only had surface knowledge of. Mr_Nanastroker, JazzPast, CalifFemme23, Maatra, Mrbrhmann25 to name some. Everytime I read one of these blogs, I go straight to the comments and look for their comments FIRST. I don’t always agree (and that’s only natural I guess) but they ALWAYS inspire thought. Now, believe it or not, all 5 of them have their own distinct style of delivering their message. I’m just not wise enough to dismiss any of them, due to their delivery style, because I may miss something way to vital…that’s just me though!

Some people like it straight no chaser, others need it accompanied with fruit drinks, umbrellas and special glasses. Strip both drinks down to their essence though, and its the same thing! All I’m personally concerned with is the essence, with no interest in how it’s presented. I have seen people place way to much focus on the delivery in lieu of the message, and that’s counterproductive in my humble opinion. To each his own!
