“See, a part of me saying, ‘keep shining’/

–Kanye West, “Diamonds From Sierra Leone (Remix),” Late Registration, 2005.

It’s always amusing, sometimes flattering, to watch overnight celebrities make a fool of themselves–without even knowing it. For years now, we’ve witnessed the cringe-inducing stupidity of Hollywood celebrities who, we’re told, deserve more respect because they are much smarter than the parts they play in interviews. They’re just playin’ dumb, their handlers assure us.

It’s a game played so well: 1) The stupid remark is made–preferably on camera 2) The public reacts in shock 3) Heart-felt apologies are rendered ad nauseam 4) Society moves on to the next victim.

It’s fun. It’s comic gold. It also reassures us of how much work we have left, to make our world as good as the promise of fairness and equality it made manifest when our mothers gave the final push.

But deep down, beneath the rage and riot, their stupidity helps us cope psychologically. The point: Even though I’m not as rich as he or she is, thank God I’m not so intellectually-challenged. Thank God I’m not the one inadvertently making a strident case for more engaging curriculum in schools. Thank God I’m not the butt of late night comics’ monologues.

It’s a psychological thing.

There are some other experiences, however, that don’t yield exactly the same results–times when these esteemed pop culture producers take a step beyond the line of self-deprecation, and tread onto grounds less amusing and flattering; make the kind of statement that turns P.R. offices into war-zone environments.

Blood Diamonds.jpg

Such might be the case with Kim Kardashian, the Reality TV show star, who went last night on CBS’ Late Show with David Letterman and made a case, in the most magnanimous form possible, in favor of conflict diamonds–B-L-O-O-D diamonds.

Letterman, already having an imperfect night by himself,[1] asked Ms. Kardashian what she did this past summer. “I went to Africa,” she replied. “Botswana. Russell Simmons and his Diamond Empowerment Fund sent me and my sister and my boyfriend, and we just went to Botswana. And, it was really cool to see how all the diamonds really help the country out there.”[2]

Of course, the Letterman studio audience, far too intelligent to let this great moment in pop culture history slip by unanswered, roared in laughter. The deeply puzzled look of Dave’s face–including teeth-sucking and cheek-puffing–said it all. She shot back, though: “I had a misconception, you know, of what was going on there.”

Letterman, hoping hopelessly to salvage the last left of Ms. Kardashian’s integrity, interrupted: “See, I had–and believe me I’m ignorant in most matters–a different impression, that the diamond industry, maybe on a global stage, was generating huge sums of money, but locally, in these countries were they were mined, that the people were being exploited.”

“That’s what I assumed before I went there,” she comforted him–and the millions watching around the world (including those in South Africa)–”and so that’s kind of why I wanted to go, and it’s completely the opposite. These diamonds fund the schools and the hospitals. They fund pretty much the entire country.”

Kardashian went on to explain why she was “a little bit disappointed in Africa” for not having enough “wildlife animals.”

It’s a shame the whole continent wasn’t made aware of her visit soon enough. Perhaps we could have flown in the “crazy animals” she craved from other continents–as she chose to cast into lakes of fire the whole of Africa for the sins of the one city she toured.

So, for that, Kim Kardashian, on behalf of Africa, I apologize.

Let us dismiss this airhead, it is the folks who look like us, who should know better: Africa has 53 independent countries, EACH with their own political dynamics AND cultural nuances.

So, if anyone were to utter, “I was in Africa” or “I am going to Africa” know it does not mean anything … If you are going to Germany, you do not say, “I am off to Europe” … you would get blank stares … Germany is still Germany when we last looked, (EU notwithstanding). Oh, for the record, Tunis, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Libya ARE AFRICAN COUNTRIES!!!

Let us rather concentrate on what matters to folks who should know … and by the way, the lions and other wild life do not roam the main streets of any city or suburb or town on the continent … ‘nuf said and please spread the word …!!! As Africans we are so tired of hearing, “I was in Africa for two weeks!” We are still wondering if you visited EVERY country in two weeks??? Such sheer nonsense … enough already!! Thank you.

she dumb and shes playng celebrity hopscotch jumping from one guy to the next. If she really thought that they were going to let her off of a plane into the heart of africa where the diamonds are being mined and people are being exploited there would have been no way she would have been on the letterman show. she would have been kidnapped and held for ransome or either killed in the middle of a raid.

I really couldn’t resist commenting on this….fist off I’m guessing this simple minded girl only visited one city when she got to Botswana and ofcorse her urban based experience would tell her that the natives were living comfortable lives. Second I can only imagine how much Russel Simmons spent on the trip so I’m guessing she got the best of the best…I find it you understand places more if you step off your high horse and intermingle with the native people maybe then she would have saw the limb less children… and finally, contrary to popular belief the same wild animals don’t run around all over Africa and different animals are indigenous to different parts of the continent. And baby if you really wanted to see some Giraffes I would suggest you invest in a ticket to East and not South Africa to the Savannas where they are actually found (Stupid B***h).

Kim Kardashian is a socialite. What do you expect? When she gets new clothes she sees herself as helping the global economy. From her perspective, the blood diamonds are still helping the economy. She is unable to calculate the exxact costs that the blood diamonds have caused. She just sees that they are putting some kind of money into the economy.

I know that I’m probably going to start a riot on this one because it’s kinda off the subject a little ..but ..I don’t give a shi**. Here goes. Why is it that our men (and you know what I’m talking about)…desire these airhead, spoiled,..(other race) woman? I really don’t get it. I sat here and watched the video and even Letterman (a other race man)…looked at her and made a few warped faces between her comments…(which is comedy in itself)…because the other race men are flocking quickly to the other strong sis side with the darker skin these days..hmmmm.
And icing on the cake with me and this family is…get this…Kloe is marrying a rich and successful BLACK man! HOW!?!?????????? The girl is the nutty list and shows it every week on national television.
Comments from men who actually did comment here would imply that they wouldn’t touch that with a two by four…but in reality..????????

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/missstrings43/ missstrings43

…and one more observation…Simmons, rich and successful…oh and I think he’s black…and(who won’t touch a black woman)took these other woman… I’ll continue to call them….on a vacation to to Africa to actually be able to smile and sit on national television to tell this story. Go figure. Hmmmm…???

And last time I checked, black people and whites alike were on the street in our precious land of the free. And some are not there because they want to be. Africa is not the only place with people starving. Why do we consistently put African pictures out there to say that they need help and are starving or no clean water, clothes or food in that country. Isn’t Africa a very rich country? Hell, the dresses are $60 a pop. In America , a woman can find a dress for $10 and still look great!

Just my opinion…and everyone has one I’m sure.
    God bless!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/antglewis/ antglewis

Correct me if I’m wrong. But doesn’t the diamond industry in Africa actually support and finance the country in some positive ways. Isn’t it only considered a “conflict diamonds” issue if the mining of the diamonds is solely for financing of war and oppression. Again, correct me if I’m wrong. If I am not wrong, I would like to think that she was referring to the positive financial effects of diamond mining. I don’t think all diamond mining in Africa has a negative connotation. I think it depends on the area of the country where the diamonds are being mined and what the proceeds are being used for and how the miners are treated or abused.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/african_orilia/ african_orilia

Usually I would agree with you, but Botswana’s diamonds aren’t blood diamonds. You should check your facts. Most countries do no benefit from the diamond trade at all because all the mines are owned by European companies, namely DeBeers, but some countries, like Botswana and South Africa have levy’s on the land, and are also resource rich in other commodities. So yes, the girl might be dumb, but in this case she’s not completely wrong.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/PRINCE_DEJOUR/ PRINCE_DEJOUR

Not all diamonds that come from Africa are blood diamonds. Some parts of Africa actually benefit from the sell of these natural resources. I also believe she was referring to the area that she was in, not every single country in Africa.
Its interesting how all the so called pro black individuals say the most disrespectful stuff about people. Why is this woman an h or b? The person that released that tape was her no good ex boyfriend.
Also just because she dates black men does not make her a bad person.
In the 21st century I wonder are black people more racist and less tolerant of people who do not look like them?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Telmeurname/ Telmeurname

Ok Im glad some people are actually educated on the subject to give clarity, otherwise I’d probably be as harsh a critic of this woman’s idiocy as they are. I don’t believe all Africa is as bad as the movie Blood diamond, but I an sure We don’t need Kim’s take on the matter. I will not deny she is a moron for her “wild animals” statement, but it’s nothing to codemn her for since she merely had been as uneducated on the subject as I have. But once again,I will defend against the sad, embittered racist, statements of SOME blk women here! It’s really tired sisters. Leave it alone,I don’t agree with bashing anyone who chooses a life of intolerant acceptance towards a race. She’s pretty,& women hate that! I get it. Bit every time a blk woman speaks on it it becomes an immediate hateful race convo. The bitterness is so obvious it reaches a kind of unattractive immaturity. I’m
a blk man raised by a blk woman & my momma would accept whoever would love me not just cuz she’s black. Kim Kardashian is the only beautiful one & that said her liking blk men is somehow disrepectful? She hardly white! Whether it’s beyonce or Tyra u still hate! blk women need to stop hating & live there lives cuz it’s too short 2 be buls**tting. Open minds are what’s attractive personally I think. I wouldn’t date any1 of those women who think like SOME on here. For what?, to only find ur still mistrusting of blk men in relationships,to have u Cheat,or divorce &take all my money instead of another race? Grow up! She’s attractive & if she was blk u would still hate!

Blood Diamonds doesn’t necessarily means it came from a Civil War torn countries.I did a researched for my Economics class regarding diamonds because I wanted to prove my elitist albino professor what’s a blood diamonds really means and its inhumane effects. Blood diamonds includes any country all over the world particularly in Afrika where diamonds are mined, and they are being mined in a exploiting manner i.e. civil wars created by western companies and western governments, child labor abuse, cheap labor, spread of HIV/AIDS to the cheap laborers, deadly work environments and corruptions. Even though profit from diamonds can erect new schools and hospitals. Our people in Afrika are still being exploited because they are not seeing the full revenue, since the industry is dictated by De Beers and the actual process happens in Israel before it is put in the market. The money that the country are seeing are the mere crumbs after all the middle men and government officials get their cuts. This statement is not a barrage towards our brothers and sisters in afrika because those who are corrupt are placed by western countries like the US, UK etc.
