CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. — Mark Ingram Sr., a star NFL player in the 1990s and the father of Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram Jr., was sentenced Monday to more than two additional years in federal prison for jumping bail in an attempt to see his son play in the 2009 Sugar Bowl.

Ingram Sr., 44, failed to surrender in December 2008 to begin serving a prison term of seven years and eight months after pleading guilty to money laundering and bank fraud. He’ll now have to spend nearly 10 years behind bars.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Platt on Long Island was nearly apologetic in imposing the additional 27 months but noted that Ingram has had a long criminal history since retiring from the NFL.

“I do this with a heavy heart,” Platt told Ingram, a star receiver for the New York Giants in the 1991 Super Bowl. “You’ve had a remarkable career and your son has a remarkable career. It’s too bad it had to end this way.”

The younger Ingram is a star running back at Alabama and won the 2009 Heisman Trophy in December. Ingram Sr. was free on bail when he disappeared after being denied a request to remain free until after his son competed in the Sugar Bowl.

His attorney, James Neville, noted that despite his failure to surrender, Ingram Sr. remained in contact with authorities via letters to the court. He was arrested Jan. 3, 2009, in a Michigan motel room hours before Alabama was beaten by Utah in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

Ingram Sr. acknowledged Monday that his failure to surrender was the wrong move.

“I know with bad decisions there is consequences,” he told the judge before being sentenced. “I have to own up to what I did and be sentenced today.”

Neville said his client, faced with the prospect of a 92-month sentence, had wanted to see his son play one more time before beginning his sentence.

No one from Ingram’s family appeared at the sentencing. Neville said his client “did not want his son involved; his father doesn’t want him to suffer for his actions.”

When he received the Heisman Trophy in New York City in December, the younger Ingram told reporters: “My father has been a great influence on my life and I love him to death.”

Ingram’s sentence on a money laundering and bank fraud conviction followed a 2005 guilty plea. He admitted laundering money he believed to be proceeds from narcotics deals and to bank fraud for cashing counterfeit checks.

His sentencing was delayed repeatedly as he tried to revoke the plea, fired several court-appointed attorneys and made what prosecutors called “outlandish” legal arguments.

Ingram also played for the Miami Dolphins, Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles. Since his retirement, he has had frequent tangles with law enforcement.

In 2001, he was sentenced to six months in federal prison after he was caught with thousands in counterfeit cash. He then served a year in jail in 2004 after pleading guilty to stealing a credit card from a Flint golf course.

A felony charge of breaking and entering to steal a purse from a parked car in Michigan was dismissed in 2007 because of a lack of evidence.

Overall,I would have done my time and got out.
Now,this is just another bad example to a young black male.
Myself,I don’t even watch sports no more. A % of these black sports stars
(males) are just dumb. This is why the white man makes a fool out of them
or some slick hot female and then they wonder why be broke in the end.
It’s all the white man’s dead slave owner’s money in the first place.

That’s bs. They could of delayed his sentence, so he can see his son play one more time before doing that bid. By the time he gets outta prison his son will probably be in the NFL.

Totally in agreement w/you Sub_Negro! He did this to himself and to his family. No more “pity” cards or parties. They’ve had MORE than enough of his outlandish and ridiculous b.s! That’s why his family wasn’t there at his sentencing and could care LESS about what happens to him….

It’s time for the NEXT generation to move on…

Maybe it was worth it to Mark Sr to see his son play in that game. We ALL would do just about anything to see a rare event like this if it were our children..don’t front, I would, Considering how racist the U of Alabama was to our people including denying Afr. Americans entry into the school, at one time and the fact that his son the first African American and athlete at that school period to win the Heisman Trophy , I am not saying it was a wise decision , but I understand, in-spite of the father who by the way has a Super Bowl ring, may have done. I am sure that that it was an emotional decision to do what he did, lets not be so quick to judge unless we are in that position with our kids.I am sure that he knew risk and still feels that it was worth it to this father and son, Mark Jr. expressed as much during his acceptance at the award show and after Alabama beat Texasfor National Title.

When you commit crime sand go to jail – you can’t go to games or the movies. It’s on him and the judge did not have to apologize for anything! Hell, I don’t even think that he should have been allowed to go to his son’s funeral let alone a game! When you do the time, you cannot get out to go to shows!

To be honest, I get where Mark Ingram, Sr. is coming from. That is father and son. As much as black men get dissed about not being part of their child’s life then when a man steps up to show support for his child no matter what, people still want to talk greasy. That’s honor and loyalty. This reminds me of what David Banner was saying on “Greatest Story Ever Told.” Too many people are straight cowards. They’re too scared to stand up for their own damn family even. It’s sick. How you going to call a man ignorant for riding for his son? That’s nonsense. So I don’t blame him for that. He’s serving more time for his offspring. That’s honor.

in any other case i would vehemently disagree with u because the saying “just getta a job” is so out of touch with the reality of society today…but in this case this nigga was a Super Bowl winning wide receiver in the NFL and had a long career, he had to have plenty opportunities to get a great job, or at least a good enough job. Anyway, i didn’t even know that was his son, its unfortunate. Some guys just would rather be criminals, like Maurice Clarett.

BS, I would have done the same thing his dad did, because you are going to do time regardless, he could have never seen his son play anymore, so all of you stupid ass people need to shut your mouth up and all of you uncle Tom black brother talking all the trash that the white man taught you is still stupid as hell, that is the way he want you to think, if it had been a white player, I bet they would let his dad see the game, so it isn’t a big deal, when are we black folk going to stop talking bad about our brothers and sisters and childrens and doing what they want us to do, it is to divide us apart against each other, that is the Willy Lynch theory that have been working for over 300 years and we are still fools.
So, don’t talk bad about the guy making a bad call, hell they do the samething and you don’t say a damn thing. I see the black race is going backward not forward, DR. MLKing gave up his life for us and he knew that he was going to get killed because he had to much power and they couldn’t control him, so they got rid of him and we didn’t learn a damn thing, if only we would think before we act, you people need to grow up and look at our surrounding and see what is going on.
Next they will becomming up with a law to get our black ass out of US if you don’t watch it, look how the poor Mexican are being treated, they are not getting Irish, Korean, Chinaman, cubans and other races out of this country, hell they tryed to keep the young kid from Cuba overhere, but if you are a person of color and not white you are going o be treated unfairly, so quit being a fool, get yourself educated and stop being a yes man or woman, so more power to his dad, hope his dad will do his time and get out, because prison isn’t nothing but another slave plantation, they got more minority locked up and the most time and some of who is not guilty and you helped put them there, so think before you react.
