PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh officials say a city investigation has cleared three white police officers who were found not to have committed crimes in their interactions with a black teenager who claims he was wrongly beaten.

Police Chief Nate Harper said Thursday that he’s begun the process of reinstating the officers who were suspended shortly after 19-year-old Jordan Miles claimed he was roughed up and beaten for no reason in January 2010.

Miles has said he believes he was attacked because he was a black man walking in a high-crime area and that he ran from the undercover officers only because they did not identify themselves.

The officers said they initially thought Miles had a gun, which turned out to be a soda bottle.

The Justice Department announced Wednesday that it wouldn’t pursue criminal civil rights charges against the officers.
