One of my friends, Dr. Tommy Whittler, is a very talented and prominent Psychologist.  Dr. Whittler once told me that when he was training rats in the lab, he would sometimes become frustrated with the fact that the rats would not do what he believed he’d trained them to do.  His mentor would always correct him with a reminder that when the rats do things that deviate from his intended outcome, it was likely due to the fact that he may not have done his job properly.  His mentor would say to him, “There is no such thing as a dumb rat.  There are only dumb trainers.”  Dr. Whittler went on to become an outstanding scholar because he learned how to properly critique his own behavior.

While human beings are certainly not lab rats, a similar analogy can be applied to college professors working with their students.  Sometimes, college students do things that disappoint us:  Some choose to drink till they puke every weekend and become lifelong alcoholics.  They might commit violent acts against each other, sometimes as a result of excessive alcohol consumption.  Some choose to engage in irresponsible sexual choices and end up with venereal diseases and unplanned pregnancies.  Also, they sometimes say or do things that are terribly ignorant, racist and insensitive.

When it comes to instances of racial insensitivity, the response from campuses is usually the same:  the administration condemns the act and begins the grandstanding process.  They tell the world that “this kind of behavior won’t be tolerated on our campus.”  They also hold forums about what happened, possibly expel the students responsible for the behavior and then put the incident behind them as quickly as possible.

That is probably what will happen at The University of Missouri, where some white students are accused of putting a line of cotton balls in front of the black culture center, reminding those inside that they are the descendants of slaves.  I wonder what the response will be at The University of California at San Diego, where some fraternities held an off-campus party called a “Compton Cookout,” instructing the women to come to the party as “ghetto girls,” with gold teeth and “booty shorts.”  They were also kind enough to serve fried chicken and watermelon in their event designed to “honor” Black History Month.

Should the guilty students be the targets of blame by the administration?  Sure, they deserve much (if not most) of the blame.  They are adults, after all.  But perhaps as educators and university administrators, we should realize and respect our obligation to educate the students on issues of diversity.  Perhaps if we are truly honest with ourselves, we will find that the students are nothing more than products of an environment that has served as an incubator for racial hatred and ignorance.  Students are, in many cases, reflections of the environment that has been created by the adults around them.  So, ignorant behavior might be expected.

If I were sitting with the administrators at UC San Diego or The University of Missouri, I might ask them these questions:

Are your students required to take classes on Black History, so they can learn about the struggles of African Americans and the bloodshed necessary for us to achieve our liberation from slavery and Jim Crow?

Are students taught cultural sensitivity, so they can understand why people of color might find these actions to be offensive?

Are students being exposed to diverse university faculty, or are they like many other college students, who only have one or two black professors over an entire four year period?

Does your university consider faculty diversity to be a priority and what is the evidence that you are working to attract and retain African American professors?

The students behind the incident at The University of Missouri have been arrested.  Since their crimes appear to be racially-motivated, their charges have been upgraded to Class D felonies.  While our natural instinct might be to make an example out of these young men, I would be curious to know if they understood the magnitude of their crimes when they were committed.  Were they trained to fully understand the history and baggage inherent in their social transgressions, or were they frustrated, young students engaging in a college prank.  This does not excuse their behavior one bit, but should they go to prison for something that they didn’t realize to be so serious?  Yes, they should be punished, but the adults and institutions who may not have educated these students on diversity and race should be punished just as much.  I am willing to bet that 19-year old Sean Fitzgerald and 21-year old Zachery Tucker, the U. Missouri students arrested for the cotton ball incident, would not have committed their crimes had they been forced to take a black history class.

In order to make permanent change, these universities must reassess the racist foundation on which their campuses were founded.  They should step back and realize that  in 1839, The University of Missouri was founded, designed and structured in a way that did not factor black people into the equation.  Now, like a sick patient getting messy surgery, the social, intellectual and administrative infrastructure of the campus is in constant conflict with an American society that differs greatly from what the founders of the campus envisioned.  This requires a consistent and courageous reassessment of how students are taught, and how things are done.  Without engaging in this effort, your institution may remain an incubator for racial hate, latent anxiety and suppressed hostility.  Racial equity is far deeper than holding hands and singing “Well shall overcome.”  Achieving Dr. King’s dream is going to require hard work.

Well, I just have to ask, was there a reason these students put on such a display? Might they have been mistreated and over reacted with what amounts to a racial slur?

Now, the only reason I bring this up is on the presumption that most people don’t act without provocation of some sort. There do remain however a small number of people in our society who need little or no provocation.

Thus, it’s important to understand their “reaction”, BEFORE coming to a judgement.

Now, I admit there is NO excuse for their reaction. But, if you are going to treat them in a way where they can understand their reaction and come to understand a better way of reaction, then you MUST understand what they were reacting to.

    And no, it’s NOT obvious…

    LOL

XL_611. It has been my experience, that ignorance needs little or no provocation to manifest itself. When it comes to racism from whites, I see very little “provocation” serving as a catalyst for this type of behavior. Throughout history, there have been many acts carried out by racist whites with no provocation. Who provoked the terrorist, Christopher Columbus? How about the Pilgrams who slaughtered thousands of native Americans? The middle passage is lined with the dead souls of a people who were just minding their business at home, and with no provocation, were snatched up by white beasts looking to make a huge profits from 400 years of free labor. Whites have always loved those blacks who are fond of turning the other cheek, and now you ask what provoked these young fools to this act. Why aren’t you telling young whites, to turn the other cheek if by chance they are provoked by blacks? No sir, sounds and looks like these young men were simply acting in accord with their nature!

“most people don’t act without provocation” says XL_611
So tell us XL_611, what provoked whites to put our ppl into slavery?…i thought so. White ppl have never been provoked into doing the things that are down right evil. So don’t try to play us for fools..u fool

_A_/blknall, Thank you so very much! It takes NOTHING for white people to act a fool…They are natural born savages….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

Excellent comments. You’ve all precisely proven my point. With little provocation, people begin to use racial slurs and accusations, and expect people to just sit there and take it. I thought it would be obvious why I made the statements I made.

Now. If I were to react in anger, who could blame me? I simply asked for the presumption of innocence, as anyone else is entitled to, despite the charges and I get rancid hostility.

Well, it’s obvious there’s a similar problem with the cotton balls.

And if there isn’t, there’s certainly no harm in waiting for ALL the facts to emerge and then make some sort of judgement.

And lastly, whites were not the only ones involved in the african slave trade. African kings and his subjects were quite busy keeping the supply flowing, for 400 years…..

    LOL

I am under the conviction that the students mentioned in the allegations represent less than 1% of whites in America who strongly espouses racial hatred to this extreme. This in no way diminishes the gravity or the seriousness of what happened but reminds us that no matter the zeitgiest or the nature of the times ignorance and rascism will continue amoung some white or ethnic groups.I applaude black planet and all other publications for bringing these events to our attention reminding us that we must not leave our posts in the guard against racial hatred.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

So blackqueen…………Your assessment of the african slave trade, excludes the participation of black kings and warlords, on the basis of presumed innocence then?

I mean, they must be presumed innocent by a large number of blacks in America, to say the least.

But since there are clear historical records which account for their participation, I’m wondering at what point their guilt will be held in as much regard as the european traders.

You see, europeans came to africa and discovered people being held in as slaves, within certain settlements or villages, whatever you might call them. These were captives from other villages. In matters of trade with the europeans, they offered the slaves up for merchandise. Europeans discovered a market for slaves, in the new world. The question is, why?

Well, the why was that you could import a slave labor force, much more quickly than you could even a compensated work force. Not many people wanted to venture to the new world, at first. Purchasing slaves, was the obvious answer.

And no one thought anything of it for the slave would have had no better life in Africa, than with a slave owner in the new world.

And that, is the problem. You see, there was no prohibition of slavery in Africa. If there were, anyone who’d been taken as a slave, would have had someone to protect them and look out for their rights and so forth.

But, there wasn’t anyone there to do that. Thus, if they stayed in Africa, they would have suffered whatever abuses their captors were to put upon them, just as their captors did in the new world.

Back then, that’s just the way things panned out.

However, no one ever mentions the fact white european christians had opposed slavery, from the outset and all during the 400 years of the african slave trade.

At any rate, if you’re going to recite historical examples as a means of addressing contemporary issues, well, you obviously can’t be selective.

You have to talk about it ALL…….

    LOL

XL_611, You keep using words synonymous with ‘assistance’ in the slave trade regarding afrikan kings, lords etc…But I ask you and please feel free to correct me if im wrong…Would there have ever been any afrikans as slaves in amerikkka had white people not PROVOKED it? Were there afrikan ships built to make way to amerikkka just itching to become slaves or force whites into slavery? OR were they on their own continent minding their own business until whites came along? So I ask again…WHO was responsible for the initial PROVOCATION…And once more what were afrikans doing that MADE whites want to enslave them? My point….No one needs to tell me to be black, just like no one has to make white people the antagonists that they are simply because its in the DNA…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

Cali. I’ve already explained my views on the african slave trade, and right there for you to see. Why you think forcing me to repeat what I’ve already said gives you some intellectual superiority, could only be due to your illiteracy and stupidity…….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

Well Queen, if I get respect, I’m more than happy to return it. Otherwise I’ll be as careless as I please, and as those who initiate any sort of disrespectful tone.

As far as whether you were talking about this crime or the entire range of crimes in society, or history, it’s irrelvant, due to the principle being the point of concern, and not the incident it’s self. As you are quite aware. However, your perceptions of whites is due entirely to issues of slavery as well as the civil rights discrimination you describe.

But because a principle is involved and that of a presumption of innocence, then that’s what I called for. It’s irrelevant in such cases to consider past wrongs suffered by any particular individual or group. It just doesn’t matter in a court of law and should not in a court of public opinion.

However, if upon the outcome of the situation you are unhappy that the culprits did not recieve the proper treatment, if any, then it becomes appropriate to consider racial disparities, when it comes to justice.

That time, is not now, obviously.

So, spare me your whining about social injustice, until it rears it’s ugly head and I positively guarantee you, I will have no objections and probably not have much to say since no matter how much is said, nothing will get done……

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

Queen….. Hehe. I meant that when social justice rears it’s ugly head, IN THIS CASE……K?

There will always be social injustice going on somewhere, even here in uh-merica.

There are all kinds of social injustice. The obvious one is a government acting upon impulse and not affording this, that or those citizens their rights.

I’m sure you can cite examples that concern you. But what can you do about them?

I don’t buy into writing your representative is the answer nor the media. Seems to me that getting people to pay attention, is pure chance.

    Just like everything else……

    LOL

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

And btw _A_, I made a clear distinction between those who act upon provocation and those who act upon little or none. So, I don’t need any lectures on that. (Been forgetting to point that out….LOL)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/msmac37/ msmac37

Another case showing how the election of the first half-white president is increasing racist taunts. We keep hearing about the increase in membership in pro-white racist organizations since the election of the half-white president. This just falls into that category.

It’s also interesting how African slavery in Africa is compared to the chattel slavery that existed in the Americas. One has to realize that in African the slaves were still treated as humans, only in the so-called New World, did the slavers treat the enslaved as if there were not human. This served to justify the treatment of the enslaved which contradicted the whole notion of “all men are created equal” since you can’t enslave someone if they are your equal. Chattel slavery sought to reduce their humanity, so the two comparisons are weak.

Also interesting how we never have these arguments when people in countries like Cambodia are trying to sell their young relatives as sex slaves. We never excuse the behavior of the purchaser since the child’s own family was complicit in the sale. The purchaser is a pedophile and is treated as such, regardless of the fact that someone else aided in the sale.

White folks really need to take responsibility for what they have done to the Africans that were sold here and the fact that some white folks still want blacks to be picking their cotton for them free of charge.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Dela_Lova02/ Dela_Lova02

THEY knew exactly what they were doing, no provocation involved. Just ignorance at its finest. You white people always come up with the same old tired excuses when it comes to issues like this.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/XL_611/ XL_611

Dela, provocation has nothing to do with cognizance. Period.

msmac, so africans were better slave masters than the europeans? Well, no dobut. Europeans weren’t interested in slavery. Slaves were few and far between and you earned your way into that by getting into someone’s debt, or committing a crime.

And that just bolsters my point that europeans were drawn into the slave trade by africans, and were not the instigators.

Proof of this is the new world it’s self. It was only discovered because they wanted to find a shorter route to the orient, which meant not having to sail around Africa. Which means they knew all about Africa, for hundreds of years. I mean before Columbus, they never sailed beyond the sight of land.

This also means they were trading in Africa, for supplies on their way back and forth.

So, it wasn’t until the new world opened up sufficiently to produce those capable of managing a large enough production of some sort of goods, for export and trade with Europe.

Now ,these traders new africans kept slaves as personal property and thus saw the opportunity to purchase a labor force for new world production.

So, after the merchant gets a producer or two off the ground and running, his ship or ships are kept busy shipping their merchandise, and they had no more need to get involved in the slave trade.

Slave trade ships, were those who simply could not compete in traditional markets. No one wanted to deal in slaves, for no other reason than all the suffering one would be exposed to. And the risk of getting sick yourself. It was thus difficult to find and keep a crew.

Obviously, only those with the worst sorts of character would be found working in those environs.

So, clearly it started out along the lines of social norms at the time and fufilling a need. In fact, some offered freedom after some years of service, just like indentured servants.

But like all institutions, good and bad, it become impossibly corrupt.

However, when America finally abolished the practice, it set the stage for abolition, world wide…..

This leads me to assume that your discussion on racism is something that you think is amusing thus why take you seriously in the first place if your laughing at yourself after every statement? I think it’s obvious the last thing DominicanRoYaLT is capable of, is critical analysis in the first place and without personal feelings in the second.

Lastly, who said anything about personal feelings not playing a role? You’re a human being and capable of both personal feelings on and within a given issue, yet capable of distancing one’s self and looking at things objectively.

And I must admit to being somewhat “tickled” by the issue.

As far as race is concerned with the issue of racism, there is no innocent party. And thus it’s almost funny to watch people seek the protection of that realm……
