“We’re all like a family here,” Esther Joseph said.
Not because this is one of the few places left in New York City that produces things in great number — 20 million pounds a year of little foil-wrapped sweets — but because of the gaping divide on the factory floor, between what is being produced and what is being discussed.

Roughly one-third of the company’s 450 workers are from Haiti, according to company officials, a figure they say represents the most Haitians employed in Queens, and perhaps the city, by a private company. And since Jan. 12, the feeling here has been anything but sweet.
