NEW YORK — Two major hiring moves by The New York Times include an appointment of Dean Baquet as the publication’s new managing editor.
Baquet is filling the position of Jill Abramson, who will become the first female executive editor in the 160-year history of The New York Times.
There was a plausible rival in the person of Dean Baquet, the Washington bureau chief, who moves up to managing editor. Baquet was a dynamic editor of the Los Angeles Times before resigning amid the wreckage of Tribune Co. budget cuts. He may still become the first African-American editor of The New York Times.
Baquet started his career in journalism as a reporter in New Orleans in the 1970s. In 1988 he received a Pulitzer Prize for the Chicago Tribune’s coverage of City Hall corruption. Later he moved to the LA Times as the paper grappled with the threat of major budget cuts, though he refused to cut staff.
