I DISAGREE WITH THIS BULLS**T!!!!

I agree with the endorsement, therefore disagree with the author. Here in NYC, there are more arrests made for marijuana use then in any other major city in the country per capita and you better believe the enforcement is targeted. NYS as a whole tend to site prisons in upstate, White Republican areas and then fill them with downstate, Black and Latinos from Democratic areas.

The fool who wrote this article doesn’t begin to address the concept of outlawing a plant that’s been used around the world for thousands of years both recreationally and medicinally. There is a corrupt history behind the criminalization and the nation as a whole is moving away from it as seen in broadening implementation of medicinal marijuana laws. We need to get over the past 80 years of lies.

I am so disgusted with certain peoples point of view. Rather than educate people and help them by NOT taking drugs we say lets make it legal since so many are going to prison? My anger and disgust is preventing me from further eloquently describing how I feel hopefully someone else can. But if no one does….Only coons and jiggaboos would agree with this.

I’m not disagreeing with what you wrote, but I feel that the NAACP can draw up a better argument than what they are using. I’m not against outlawing legalizing the plant, if it is being used for the purposes you mentioned but to say that it should be legalized so that way we won’t get arrested for it is asinine. I am speaking out against the reason, if it is the sole reason of the NAACP wanting to legalize it. Yes, I agree that the enforcement IS targeted. As a Black man, I am harassed solely because I am Black, so I do get it, trust me. But this organization has been known to defend the rights of Blacks and rightfully so, but I disagree with the reasoning, strictly the reasoning.

the reason marijuana is illegal is because it can be grown easily in the united states. notice all drugs that must be manufactured in some type of factory are legal (alcohol, asprin, cigarettes, pharmacuticals, etc). if we could make asprin from scratch in our basement, do u know how illegal a bottle of asprin would be?

I have been harassed for the color of my skin, I have been passed over for the promotion for the color of my skin and I have been layed off for the color of my skin. The harassment has occurred both domestically and abroad, the job issues have both happened right here in NYC with organizations that work on Civil Rights issues – in both cases the content of my character, passion of my work and my abilities were never questioned, rather, the organizations in question thought it would be better for media relations and funding requests that a person of color be in the position I sought or the position I was in. Is this simply a perception? No. I was told outright and as a supporter of their work and the Civil Rights Movement as a whole I stepped aside without arguement, because the alternative might have been a bitter victory in court that would only set back the principles that I believe in.

Do I think the NAACP could elaborate on their reasoning or broaden it? Sure. But, I think the narrow focus better serves the NAACP’s interests and bolsters a broader campaign. I believe this was a strategic decision, but would love to hear whether that’s true or not from someone involved.

I am sorry but your article is HORRIBLE. To compare marijuana smoking which a large part of the population has tried at least once… to murder is asinine. I went to a harvest party about 10 years ago in which I was the only black person in attendance. And yes just like any other project that you might go to in as housing project… there were people there smoking weed. THESE WERE RICH WHITE PEOPLE! But we’ve internalized the media’s concept of the black man as criminal.
Marijuana needs to be legalized because too many people’s lives are being destroyed to discourage them from smoking a plant that WONT destroy them!!!

People like you said the same things about ALCOHOL decades ago. Remember prohibition? How did that work out for the country?

PROHIBITION is the MAIN reason that the Mafias got big in the first place. That ONE piece of legislation prohibiting alcohol is the main reason that ‘organized crime’ (on small and large levels) is rampant in just about every state today. This country never saw murders rates so high until they PROHIBITED people from accessing the drug called alcohol.

Prohibition of marijuana is doing the EXACT same thing today. People are being killed/jailed over something that could just be REGULATED like alcohol is now (or more stringently).

Now, understand, I don’t think people should be advocating unregulated MJ usage. That’s a slippery slope to Idiotsville. But, you could even use the SAME regulations we have for alcohol (>21, non-public places, not while driving, etc). Really not that confusing.

States would actually make a PROFIT from it (it’s a free-growing cash crop after all), the country would receive more in the way of TAXES, it would create a brand new INDUSTRY and create JOBS, less young people of ALL races would be in jail and NOT have their lives ruined for one tiny puff or possession, and if the U.S. regulates it, the Black market (street dealers) would wither away. So in one fell swoop, the jail populations DROP, the GDP INCREASES, and the cops can STILL arrest people who break the alcohol-like regulations for it.

Win-Win-Win situation as I see it.

I say we keep waging war against hard drugs like heroin/crack/coke/meth/Justin Beiber (y’know, drugs that can actually KILL you), but we’re wasting too much on simple weed infractions. Seriously, even some police officers are against arresting people for these frivolous weed charges.

Allow me to state a few, maybe several counter arguments to your opinion.

It’s literally IMPOSSIBLE to overdose on marijuana. A machine called a vaporizer can filter out a very LARGE percentage of the tar/smoke that comes with igniting marijuana with fire. Hemp plants can be used for clothing and as food/fuel sources. Anyone with half a brain would know that maybe it wouldn’t be the best idea to operate complex/heavy machinery or an automobile while under the influence of it. The ONLY reason why MJ is looked down upon so much by people like Misz Pink Diamond is simply because of the social stigma of it being illegal.

If the government decided that water was illegal for whatever ridiculous reason, you’d probably feel the same way about that lol. It’s a no-brainer here! The only possible reason I could see anyone using against mj legalization is that it’s a “gateway drug”, which is totally ridiculous ’cause ANY drug can be a gateway drug lol . I love marijuana and I have NO INTEREST AT ALL in trying anything stronger. More and more people are realizing that mj prohibition is ridiculous, and more than half the celebrities/politicians in our country have smoked weed, including many of our presidents!

Well Ive WITNESSED first hand the numerous near fatal AND fatal accidents due to beng high. @BKwiteBwoy Respect for the apology… I understand what you are saying as far as being passed over for the color of your skin for the opposite reason of why I’ve been discriminated against, I guess I should have made it clearer that I meant as far as being looked upon as a criminal in the eyes of the law or in the eyes of an employer with preconceived notions as opposed to meeting a quota to NOT be accused of racism in the workplace, definitely different cases of bias, but nonetheless, understandable. And as far as the reasons the NAACP have given, as a Black man, I can’t and won’t accept that reasoning based on the history of the organization. I’d rather see them try to KEEP Blacks out of jail or to see them try to legalize marijuana on other explanations, that’s all I’m saying.

The basis of my discontent is the REASON the NAACP put out as to WHY they want to legalize marijuana. And I can accept your opinion of my article being horrible but can you accept me saying that you are wrong in thinking that I am comparing smoking weed to murder? That’s not even in the equation. I wrote, based on the reasoning of the NAACP, that if they are saying that this should be legalized because Blacks are arrested more than whites for this offense, will they use the same reasoning for murderers. If I had to guess, I would bet that the California NAACP was approached by a broad based coalition working for legalization specifically to take a stance that cited discrimination. I used to work as a community organizer and policy analyst. This is exactly the type of message that I would have suggested they deliver in order to drum up support for yet another reason. So do I think it’s the only reason or the best reason? No, but I think it might be the best strategic positioning for a Civil Rights organization to take. Perhaps the NYC/NYS organization should consider stepping up and speaking out on this issue as well – NYC arrests are overwhelmingly the result of racial profiling and the highest per capita of all large cities in the US.

I knew that the NAACP was losing its grip on reality and has exceeded its usefulness in the United States and this action falls right in line with that belief. What they should be doing is advocating for more and better educational and employment opportunties so that those who make their living from selling marijuana or who use it constantly to escape their sense of hopelessness will find it less appealing and thus keep greater numbers out of the prison system to begin with. But no, the arrogant idiotic fools now running the NAACP come up with the lame rationale of the disproportionate numbers of Blacks in prison for marijuana possession, sale and use to recommend legalization. Making it legal will only encourage more people to use it and that in turn will only create more harm and an increased atmosphere of irresponsibility and hopelessness within the community.

From what I have heard or as the story goes, Obama prodded the NAACP (as well as others) to support this because if it does become legal to smoke, it obviously becomes legal to sell and when that happens the seller is now running a business and is libel to file a tax return and to pay taxes which would help both our State & National debt to go down. Now that is finally some cool thinking from the White House.

The NAACP has there priors mix up! There are over 15,000 civilian workers at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, and less than 3% of those workers are Black. Marijuana should not be illegal in the first place. It’s ridiculous that a natural plant which has many applications from cloth for material to many medicianl purposes should demonized.
I have yet to see someone pass out in gutter with the contents of there stomach, which should be on the inside, on the outside from smoking marijuana! But look at the nearest bar or club and you will find your drunkards doing just that.

They should legalize it. The goverment banned it earlier in the 20th century to oppose the hippies even though other countries legally allow it. The United States has a VERY BAD habit of making decisions because they don’t like or get along with someone or a group of people and they have a VERY BAD habit of not going back and correcting THEIR mistakes. If they legalize it, the arrest rate in this entire country will drop FOR EVERYBODY NOT JUST BLACKS, people will be happier, more pieceful. Not only that, they would make far more money off of marijuana than they would cigarettes. Cigarettes have toxic chemicals in them causing cancer, while marijuana is a natural herb and has no link to cancer, meaning people would live longer and marijuana companies could make that much more money off of the product. cigarette companies kill their customer and just try to go get new ones. The FDA kills people for profit, this is a form of population control. That’s why they legalize things that will harm you instead of things that won’t harm you. This @ss backwards way of thinking is exactly what’ wrong and has always been wrong with this country.

I understand the NAACP’s point but it is to vague. It should also talk about the medicinal benefits and potential for tax revenue to improve our schools and communities, etc. Of all the senior citizens that I know over 65, about 80% smoke an occasional joint to help relieve physical symptoms that come with age. Marijuana should be legalized. It has tremendous medicinal value for people who are afraid of harsh pain meds and is much easier on the body. Alcohol was my drug (yes I said DRUG because that’s what it is) of choice for many years. I used to get rip roaring drunk and woke up in too many strange places having done many strange things…but a funny thing happened once I got older…my body started to hate alcohol. I mean really react badly to me drinking one forty…so I had to stop cold turkey for a few years to retrain myself to be an occasional drinker. I want to be able to smoke a joint or have some “special” brownies without Big Brother coming to haul me off the hoosegow. I want to be able to smoke a fat one and watch South Park without feeling shame! Thank you President Obama for making the bold step to free repressed and oppressed weed smokers!!!

I take exception to the tone of your article. Does an organization or its members have to be high to do what’s right? It would be eye-catching news just to run the headline without the snarky comment. No, the NAACP as well as other organizations that are concerned with justice and freedom, should have made their positions plain a long time ago instead of hiding their collective heads in the sand and pretending everything is okay. Now, weed is not for everyone, but those who choose to smoke it run less of a health risk and, frankly, will probably get into less trouble than drunks.

Why don’t you just learn to THINK? Making marijuana an illegal substance is reminiscent of and is as destructive as Prohibition of alcohol.
I don’t think children should smoke but it seems perfectly acceptable if adults do it. It seems in almost every way a safer recreational drug than ALCOHOL which IS A DRUG! How many driving fatalities, domestic murders and other mayhem can be traced back to alcohol consumption – hundreds of thousands if not millions. MaryJ could be taxed and nearly eliminate the murderous criminality that its illegality produces now.

The most dangerous thing about Cannabis is being arrested. In addition to the jail time, loss of employment opportunities & stigma, you can lose your rights to govt. assistance such as student loans, housing etc. Rapists & murderers still qualify though. ~~~~

Why make such a big fuss over something that by comparison seems harmless? When you look at the numbers and the facts not the rhetoric, it’s hard not to draw the conclusion that prohibition is being used as a tool to disenfranchise people of color. ~~~~

What does common sense tell you?

For once the NAACP gets it right. This is the first time I’ve ever considered joining or donating to them.

If you want to make a comparison between legal and illegal hard drugs, consider inhalants (e.g. huffing). It is illegal to concentrate and inhales stuff like paint, but people do it to get high. It’s horribly addictive and causes great harm to the user. But there is no one making money on it as an illegal drug. Therefore we can treat the abuse as a health problem rather than a criminal problem.

When you remove the profit motive, almost all of the really horrible side effects go away. Gone is the violence and criminal behavior associated with making money. Gone are the prison profiteers. Gone are the overbearing police responses that rain down on people who just happen to live near where the drugs are being sold.

Additionally, the LD50 (that means lethal dose for 50% of people) is IMPOSSIBLE to achieve with cannabis. NO ONE has EVER died from an overdose of weed. That’s not true of alcohol or any of the other illicit/illegal drugs or pain killers (including aspirin). And all that ignores the fact that there is so much more you can do with the cannabis plan than smoke it – the same plant, grown differently, is called “Hemp” and can be made into any and everything that petroleum can. EVERAYTHING from plastics that outlast what we now use to fuel for our cars to paper (like that used to print the originals of the US constitution and declaration of independence and all early bibles on) to fabrics as fine as silk to as hearty as canvas and burlap.

Do some research and grow up – cannabis never hurt anyone, any substance can be abused. It’s short sighted and stupid to keep this very benevolent plant that man has cultivated for thousands of years illegal. At this point cannabis is a political prisoner as are the thousands of black (and brown and yes, even white) people that are incarcerated because of it.

Legalize it. Whatever it is. Educate people about the harm. Then let individuals make decisions about their own lives.

Families and People need to be educated about Marijuana. Families need to teach their children and young people about marijuana. Education on the danger of these drugs need to be taught. Use of these drugs often lead to other drug usage. Drugs are often the cause of poverty in the black neighborhood, and avoiding of poverty needs to be taught. Once people have a purpose and goals a lot of them will not get into drugs. We need to train our children to maturity level in which they are pleased with themselves, and don’t have to rely on drugs for a good time. There is an absence of socializing in the black family with one another. This leads us/we to look for another outing for enjoying life, and sad to say it often leads to drugs. Our lives should be well-rounded that everything in our lives structured with a good sound adult leading the way. I say no to legalizing marijuana. In many cases marijuana is doctored with other drugs.

This article has alot of points to it, but I would like to start with the article itself. What the NAACP is putting out there is an insult. It makes us as the black community appear as if we do not have any self-control. I mean if we know it is some great white conspiracy then why not defeat out enemies by not giving them what they want, why not stop smoking or selling or possessing just because we know that is want they want. It just seems like a sorry reasoning behind the legalization of weed that make us look bad. Now as for all the logic behind legalizing it that I read in all the comments I will write this. I read how everyone thinks there would be some great tax benefit from it, but do you not know the government would only take those taxes and use them for their own means. Look at all the taxes collected now, is the country any better for it. They steal the money that is supposed to improve our schools, roadways, and public facilities; do you think weed taxes would somehow be immune to it. Some of you compare it to alcohol but only contradict yourselves in your comparisons. You openly admit that alcohol is worse, yet you would like weed to be legal just like it. You say look at all the drunks and alcohol related deaths and you say look how bad it got with prohibition, but do you not see how bad it is without prohibition? Look at all the drunks and alcohol related deaths and see that your arguement is a contradiction. You say it is was bad without the alcohol so it needed to be legalized and it is bad without weed so it needs to be legalized, but yet you say how bad the alcohol is and that is why we should smoke?? Do you not see drunks would be replaced by potheads and alcohol related deaths by weed related deaths. Weed impairs thought and judgement and if you think that is wrong then you have never smoked weed or maybe someone sold you babbage. It is bad enough sharing the road with drunks, now you want everyone to be high too. I think with whats going on in the world now-a-days we need everyone to be a focused as possible. That is exacly why alcohol is such a problem because everyone is always trying to run from reality. We alway want to feel good even when we do not deserve it. Now I am not trying to look down on anyone because I have smoked and cannot say I never will again, but it is not something I tell other people to go and do. You have to find your bad habits on your own, I am not here to bring you down with me. And the thought of my little boy growing up to buy weed out of walmart does not make me feel like a proud father. And as for the thought that there are no health repercussions that is one of the reasons I am not smoking now. Weed unaturally increases the heart rate, which is why your eyes get red so you can be left with high blood pressure. Weed also has THC, which is does not break down easily. Just look at the black tar in your weed pipe, that is what is in your lungs and blood stream. It also kill brains cells faster then what your body produces so while it may not be crack, weed is not perfectly harmless, that is a myth. I mean look at all the black people who smoke, yet still have heart and health problems. I realize that weed is a good pain killer for those actually in pain and can be used to make certain goods for the public, but lets not fool ourselves in believing that walking around in a daze all day is what we need as a people. We have the power to stop the white conspiracy, the drug dealers, and to empty the prisons right now, all we have to do is stop.

Yes I do think that it should be legalized. It would make life better and with a good grade there would be no need for anything harder. And less of our creative minds would be put in jail for smoking a natural product. And it does no harm to the smoker or very little harm. I personally am in favor of legalizing marijuana, I am a health care professional and a chronic pain sufferer. Every generation has a situation like this before it was alcohol and it was banned and then it was legalized and alcohol is much worse than marijuana. I have seen actual studies where people with chronic pain, Parkinson and even autistic people have benefited from use of marijuana. OK, I’m looking at it from the point of view of someone who isn’t trying to break the law or who does things knowing it’s against the law. I’m quite sure that 100% of the people arrested for weed-related crimes KNEW that what they were doing is deemed illegal and if caught, would suffer whatever consequences that are written in the law. So, my concern would be towards NOT being arrested for those crimes. Trust me, I DO understand the ruse the government and local officials are creating by setting and/or implementing certain laws. BUT, we, as people, have to be much smarter than that! If you know putting your hand in fire is gonna burn, then why complain when you have burn marks and pain on your hand?

The problem I see is not one of the purposes of the laws being put in place, but the avoidance of actually being arrested for committing the offense that one would be arrested for.

I agree that marijuana should be legalized. Not just for recreational and medical reasons. Since 2007 70% of all marijuana that have been grown and seized in the United States, have been grown in our State and National parks by illegal immigrants. We are paying tens of millions of dollars for clean up.

1st…marijuana is not a illicit drug, now the “new” marijuana where you are adding chemicals and sprays and being kept in fish tanks, etc..I feel that is considered a drug because your adding chemicals. It’s not the marijuana that kills, it’s what they are putting in it that will eventually kill you!!

I totally agree with what you said in your response. I’m not advocating breaking the law and I never took the position that when someone breaks the law they shouldn’t have to face the consequences. If I knowingly broke the law its already in my mind that if I get caught I’m going to face the consequences. All I’m saying is that the law isn’t always in the interest of the people and when it isn’t, the people have a responsibility to challenge that law by putting pressure on lawmakers to change and/or abolish it. If everybody just blindly followed the law then we as a people wouldn’t have the right vote, own property or even live freely. All of those things were against the law at one point in the history of this country, and it took people to stand up against it and challenge it for it to change.

The war on drugs in general, and the illegality of marijuana in particular, are social experiments that have been proven failures. You cannot legislate a problem out of existence by banning people from putting a substance into their body. Any war on drugs can only be won by prevention through education. Punitive strategies after the fact serve no purpose other than to divert law enforcement resources from other more needy areas like murder, rape, child abuse, youth violence etc. Prohibition did not stop alcoholism. It merely created an environment where criminals could thrive through bootlegging, and all the associated violence that comes with trafficking an “illegal” substance. When Prohibition ended, the great majority of Americans didn’t instantly become alcoholics overnight just because they could, as was the main reasoning behind banning alcohol back then. You can see the same failed logic applied in the War on Drugs, and it is no more true now than it was then. We’ve spent over a trillion dollars on the War on Drugs and we are in worse shape than ever. Imagine if we had spent that trillion on education, after school programs and mentoring/outreach efforts?

I think its about time for a War on Ignorance….win that one, and all the other problems will take care of themselves.

It is about time that cooler heads were brought to bear on this antiquated prohibition and criminalization of something that should be a personal health decision of the U.S. citizen just like anything else. I have long agreed that marijuana should have been legalized long ago. Even though I do not smoke anything, never used drugs, and cannot stand the odor of “pot”, I believe in the individual’s right to make that decision for themselves — as long as they use it in their own homes — out of the prescence of children, and never in a public setting.

Many of the injustices that have plagued our society and our race should be abated with this legalization, in my opinion. First and foremost, it will stop the unjust and needless incarceration of our African-American males and also the females. It is crazy how many of our young people are in prison simply for selling and smoking drugs. This is simply another method of racial genocide. It is inhumane to incarcerate someone for smoking something that is actually equilavent to cigarettes — which I do not smoke either. I believe the same rules should apply for both. Moreover, those incarcerated are “low on the totem pole” and those in the “driver’s” seat (the top guys — who are no doubt — Non-African-American — are never or much less apprehended and incarcerated. Then the suburban whites who are users of the higher-level drugs such as cocaine and crack go unapprehended and untouched. This is systematic racism.

Legalization would also decrease significantly the crime rate for thefts and burglaries and other malajusted behaviors would disipate when prices are reasonable and affordable when it is legalized. Moreover, those who actually need this substance for medicinal purposes will be able to obtain it easily.

Just as alcohol has been de-crminalized in our society, so should marijauna for medicinal as well as recreational purposes. The NAACP has come of age and is finally taking a justifiable stance into modern times. I applaud their boldness.

I would be so bold as to predict that many of those here who have something negative to say about the NAACP are not and have never been members of it — but think they have the right to be supercritical of it. As for myself, I have been a long-time member (albeit at times sporadically at times)but mostly for the past decade. The new administration has brought such advancements to the NAACP just in the few months of leadership, that I am vastly encouraged. Yes, I take pride in the new strides that the NAACP is attempting to take that minimizes the previous age-old rhetoric. They shocked me in taking on the cases of Troy Davis, Mumia Abu Jamal, the Scott Sisters and others. This new step to legalize marijauna is just another rung on the ladder of justice the NAACP is climbing.

Like poor food choices causing obesity, driving while drunk, wife-beating and/or any other malajusted behavior, the common man or woman must be educated to make better decisions. Yes, they need to be EDUCATED, but NOT INCARCERATED. That is the injustice of those cannibis-growing/dealing/using laws. This is especially in the purview of organizations such as the NACCP when apprehension is targeted, one-sided, and inhumane. That’s my stance and I’m sticking to it.

I absolutely do not see the big deal in the law legalizing marijuana. Regardless of all the tired ass commmericals how they try to make it seem you will hit a child or other dumb stuff I have not seen it yet. They know damn well that by the stores selling your alcohol or you going to a bar to get it might cause you to get behind the wheel of your car and make things happen but you don’t see them rushing to ttop selling liquor. The same with cigarettes they have that big ass surgeon general sign on the side and tell you that smoking cigarettes can cause cancer and birth defects but I don’t see not one company removing it from the shelf…They know weed selling and growing isn’t going anywhere anytime soon

Weed should have been legal along time ago! Comparing murder to smoking weed? That is a very weak comparison! Cigarattes and alcohol are way more addicting and dangerous than weed. Put a tax on it, age limit, and lets get this economy going again!! This is a sure way of boosting the economy!

After reading some of the posts after this came out it saddens me to see how ignorant so many people are when it comes to the topic of marijuana. The word is not even the true name of the plant. Marijuana basically trnslates to (wild Mexican tobacco). As we all know it is an HERB, not a drug, period. It was used by people in ancient civilizations way before us. You cannot overdose on it and there have been no reported deaths either. In order to understand why it is illegal now all you have to do is do a little research, yes this means reading. For all who don’t know MARIJUANA CAN CURE SOME CANCERS!!! This is one of the main reasons it is illegal. Learn about a man named RICK SIMPSON and his cannabis oil who lives in Canada. The herb is so versatile in so many ways that it would virtually destroy numbers of industries including paper, textile, oil, and pharmaceutical. The illegality is all about money but most people believe the garbage that white men have told them about the beautiful plant.

Do yourself a favor, go watch the history channell, there is a show on there called “illegal drugs and how they got that way” and u will realize that weed was perfectly legal till the 1920′s when the great depression happend, the only reason they made it illegal was because there was so many mexicans in the country! At the time of the great depression the mexicans were bringing it into the country, they were used as a scapegoat in order to thin out the food lines! Thats why it became illegal! Finally, something that makes sense. We are the ones getting arrested for ignorant petty crimes. Which should be a crime because tobacco and liquor are just as much a drug as marijuana and more dangerous than weed. Coffee is a drug, FOOD is a drug just like weed because a drug by definition alters you state. Weed is natural and completely unprocessed unlike cigarettes. Not to mention legalizing weed would end our gross national debt in a matter of a few years, take alot of
non criminals out of jail and save us tax money. Knowledge is power!!!

The solution is natrual herbs and believe me if you knew your medicine you would advocate weed also. I think it should be decriminalized, there is too many people that go to jail for petty minor possession of marijuana charges. It effects peoples future with jobs and education. Something so petty should be looked at as a traffic citation not a criminal offense. If one is trafficking marijuana then that should be looked at as a criminal offense.
