From the Sacramento Bee:

A campaign launches Monday to encourage more African Americans to donate blood and register as potential bone marrow donors.

The 10 a.m. kickoff event at Underground Books, 2814 35th Street, will feature Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson and Debbie Meador, a leukemia survivor who received life-saving transfusions.

African Americans are among those least likely to find a bone marrow match, according to a news release by BloodSource, the group behind the campaign.

The effort is meant address a national shortage of blood and bone marrow for African Americans suffering from leukemia, sickle cell anemia and other life-threatening diseases, the group said.
