Before rushing to judgment here, I think it’s important to understand all the facts in this case. According to family members, this guy was receiving severe racial harrassment from co-workers and supervisors. Took his concerns and PHOTO proof to management and nothing was done. Noose’s drawn on the wall, the word “NIGG>ER” scrawled on the wall, supervisors threatening to get rid of him (he actually overheard and taped that conversation). I’m watching CNN and of course the word “angry” has been used several times, even though there is no actual proof of that. One thing that makes no sense to me. They are saying that they caught him stealing and called him and gave him the option of resigning or quitting. Not sure if that’s a Union thing, but since when does an employer give you that option when they allegedly can prove you have been stealing?

At the end of the day though, violence shouldn’t be the answer, but it’s just a damn shame that his union REP couldn’t have been more instrumental in dealing with this situation so this unfortunate incident could have been avoided.

@doggz. I did follow up by saying the violence is not the answer, but his ex girlfriends mother was outlined all the abuse. She said he has pictures on his camera. As far as the violence is concerned, like any human being, you have to be real careful how much you continue to push buttons. Never know the mental state of people. By all accounts, this dude was very mild mannered and never displayed any anger. Even his union REP said the same thing, based on interviews he conducted with this man’s co-workers. Got to be careful how you handle people.

If you recall Colin Ferguson who took the LIRR back in the mid 90′s and killed 6 whites riding the train. He claimed the same unrelenting harrassment from white co workers and struck out. The thing is, striking out like that is real unfortunate which only results in a lot of suffering with the remaining family members. This is why, respect for the next man is paramount, and actually liking the person shouldn’t have to be a prerequisite.

This is the type of thing that we need to see more of from black males. Whites discriminate, you complain and they just say “we don’t tolerate this” or “we’ll look into this” and then hope that you don’t say anything again. Obviously, dude had some ‘unresolved’ anger issues that were suppressed or never taken care of. That’s why he killed himself after killing the others. Black or white, Latino or Asian, male or female, these are indeed very, very tough times. You cannot predict how ‘anyone’ is going to react with a job loss, which starts a domino effect on one’s whole life’s demise. Some people are not strong and do need help. This is why it’s so important that we pay attention to the ‘clues’ and ‘queues’ people in the workplace give us…most for their protection more than our own. No one wants to see tragic situations like this in these times. But…it is a reminder of the sincerity of the business of getting our workforce back on a productive level. There’s no excuse for what he did. Based on principle, stealing is wrong. There could have been some resolve to his charges for claims of racism, or he could have sought alternatives himself. There are enough organizations, self-help groups and healthcare programs he could have utilized, some of which are financially supported by his own union fees.

There could have been a more peaceful resolution. He should have filed a racial harassment lawsuit for a hostile work environment. Management didn’t deal with the problem by disciplining the offenders. So if they violate then you litigate.

Well I have been in situations in corp american where I at least thought about doing something crazy….yes people racism is still going on to this day! I was the only black on the team or the last 2 companies where I worked. I’ve seen other black people get downgraded and/or laid-off by the droves. I have been laid off two times myself. I worked on a team and these two white women gave me hell or no reason at all. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t condone what this guy did. He should have stuck it out like I did. On the other hand, I do know what it feels like to want to get even with those who have wronged you or no reason whatsoever. I tend to be an extremely nice person too…and therefore a target. Plus, if you look in many corporate environments you will not find many black males at all. At the same time, when jobs become available black males line up on groves. There is something weird about this picture. Please don’t give me that bull about how beneficial it is to file a racial discrimination lawsuit because I started the process for that and the EEOC pretty much denied my claim. You scream racism and no one wants to deal with you at all. It is best to do like I do which is graduate from college, gain as many skills as possible and only pursue companies where people appreicate your skills/culture/contribution. You will all experience some form of racism, yet you should not resort to harming anyone.

If you believe that minority people still do not endure racism and social injustices in the U.S. than you are blind. White privilege, institutionalized racism, and discrimination are still overly apparent in the United States.
