A recent study by the Yale University Child Study Center shows that Black children — especially boys — no matter their family income, receive less attention, harsher punishment and lower marks in school than their White counterparts from kindergarten all the way through college. A subsequent article published in “The Washington Post” reported that Black children in the Washington, D.C. area are suspended or expelled two to five times more often than White children. It’s a national trend that needs to be addressed.

Judith Browne Dianis, co-director of the Advancement Project joined Roland Martin on Washington Watch to discuss this disturbing trend.

I already have seen how these serpents treat our children! That’s why I am getting ready to be a tutor for junior high school boys.

This shyt is outta control. You have cracker fe-male and male teachers, who are molesting, raping, sodomizing and making our children do all kinds of freaky shyt, like having them suck their toes and rub their feet…IN CLASS!!!

“There is a difference between education and training. Training teaches you to operate against the best interest of your own group. It teaches you individual behavior rather than group behavior. Education is a liberating force.” -Dr. Bobby E. Wright

OUR CHILDREN ARE BEING ‘TRAINED’ TO FAIL; NOT EDUCATED!

REACH ONE! TEACH ONE! LUV ONE! It’s the only way to save our children!

I am curious on how many black teachers, principles, and other school administrators are responsible for doing this to our own.

When my wife was still in college, she had to work in an inner-city middle school for a few weeks for observation and student teaching. The demographic breakdown: 65% black, 27% Latino, 6% white and 2% Asian.

Guess which students refused to listen to the teacher? Guess which students were rude, disrespectful, and disruptive? Guess which students failed to hand in their work, or if they did, handed in work that was incomplete or resoundingly stupid?

I’ll give you a hint, it wasn’t the Asians, whites, or vast majority of the Latinos…

My nephew is living with me again after staying with his “mother” for the past 2 years. In the 2 yrs, he fell terribly behind and is taking extra courses after school to catch up. His counselor is black. In the month that he has been here, she has done nothing but beat him down mentally and emotionally. After confronting her on the things that she has said to him (including he was not capable of doing the work to catch up and she actually pulled him out of class to tell him this), I had to go to her supervisor, and then ended up going to the assistant superintendent. It wasn’t until I approached him that this b**** was dealt with. I would really love to know how many of these “educators” are black? Our own people are sometimes quicker to harm our children than the others.

  • Anonymous

It’s not just the white teachers though. Too many blacks are doing it to our own.

I would like to know how many of these school administrators are black females. Years ago Frances Welsing said that one of the problem that black boys have to deal with is an educational system which is filled with black women who for whatever reason are very angry at black men.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cutthashyt/ cutthashyt

i disagree..how can we have too many blacks doin it to our own when we dont have a large number of blacks involved in teaching our own? if we have the same number of blacks teaching our own as do whites are kids would be better off because the influence of the bad teachers wouldn’t be a threat bcoz we’ll have a larger number of good black teachers representin. it’s a numbers game

But if this were females in trouble like this, the Whitehouse staff and every other institute in the world would be doing anything and everything possible to correct this wrong. LOL! The book by Juwanza Kunjufi The Conspiracy to Destroy black boys said this years ago. This is big news only because these miseducated negros need white folks to validate what everyone is black knows. When blacks say it it means nothing because some of us are so brainwashed that our pain can only hurt unless white folks say it can .As far as Yale University lets discuss your wicked history .

Yale was involved with holding and trading slaves in the nineteenth century.
Many of Yale’s colleges and buildings are named after slaveowners. Even John C. Calhoun, the most notorious pro-slavery thinker of them all, has a college named after him there. Yale has not yet conducted a thorough and scholarly study of its past involvement in colonial slavery.

Okay people, can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be honest for a minute?

With regard to black boys and this issue, as well as all the other issues that have a negative affect on black boys and young black men…let’s ask ourselves WHY they continue to have these problems, from the one we’re discussing here, to higher high school drop out rates, higher incarceration rates, less likely to graduate college, less likely to marry, less likely to sire children in a marriage…

What’s the one thing all these boys/young black men have in common?

They are born into single parent households to well meaning but selfish black women who bought into the “I DON’T NEED NO MAN TO HELP ME RAISE MY BOYS hype, only to discover that they really COULDN’T raise boys to be men, and are now seeing the results of their dismal failures reaching back 30 years: a generation of undisciplined, emotional, fragile black boys and young black men who’ve never had an example of what being a strong black man entails, who have have NOT had the LOVE, STRENGTH, EMOTIONAL AND FINANCIAL SECURITY and DISCIPLINE of a BLACK FATHER IN THE HOME, WHERE MOTHER AND FATHER ARE MARRIED AND PARENT TOGETHER. The result is that black boys and young black men lack the discipline, focus and self control needed to learn, succeed and stay out of trouble. The CORE VALUES children learn are learned in the HOME and taught by BOTH MOTHER AND FATHER. You all can blame the schools, teachers, white people, other black people, the system all you like. Look at the stats for black boys with fathers and the home, versus black boys raised by single mothers. Lack of intact, two parent households have caused black boys, young black men and black men in general a great deal of pain, suffering, uncertainty, insecurity. We do our children a TERRIBLE injustice when we bring them into the world, not ensuring that have the MOST IMPORTANT thing a black boy so desperately needs…A LOVING, CARING, STRONG BLACK FATHER…not in another state…not across town, not around the corner…in the home and married to the mother. Thats’s the LEAST we can do for our children….or is that too difficult?

When children speak up about how they are treated they are label as troublemakers or diagnosed with ADHD. With teachers and counselors always killing their dreams rather find their potential, the end result is many angry young men. And as a result black teens are sentenced as adults more often then their white counterparts when the same crime is committed

  • Anonymous

Unfortunately, the research isn’t really clear that black teachers are less biased than white teachers. So separating them might fix their exposure to inequality, but they would still get stricter treatment tan the white kids.

The solution is requiring every teacher to have cultural training and review. Most older teachers never had training in intercultural communication, and the new ones have only basic understanding. And of course, since teachers caant be fired, nobody bothers to discipline them for being biased. It is a sad state of affairs.

  • Anonymous

This is not news, even in the education industry. Maybe it should read “study shows black kids STILL get unequal treatment,” since racism denialists like to claim that all of that was “in the past.” I wrote a paper on the subject 10 years ago and had no shortage of studies to use then.

“Your children” are being trained to fail because of your culture, not because of the teachers. Blaming teachers is a cop out and frankly I am tired of reading about it. Black Youth Culture glorifies drug use, crime and general misery. Listen to any rap cd or talk to any child who envy’s and emulates the likes of Lil Wayne (criminal) or Chris Brown (criminal). The teachers are not failing these children, the parents are.

  • Anonymous

The problem with these “studies” is they never go into what the punishments were for. Or what % of other students are failing as well. Let’s say you have a classroom that is 25% Black, 25% White, 25% Hispanic and 25% Asian. Let’s further say that the passing rates are 12% Black, 22% White, 22% Hispanic and 22% Asian, whose fault would that be? Would it be the teachers fault still? Or would someone finally realize that maybe it’s a parenting issue.

  • Anonymous

I’ve always believed that Black boy students from grades pre K- 6th should have primarily QUALIFIED Black male teachers. They also should interact with other teachers but their primary teachers and guidance counselors should be Black men. They’ll have teachers to identify with and teachers and administrators who can identify with them, they’ll have teachers who don’t fear them, hate them or believe from the jump there is no reason to try with them because they’re failures. IMO that will benefit our Black boy students the most, us as a people and America as a nation. I believe that the charter schools that have primarily Black male teachers and Black boys are thriving. We have the answers the problem is implementing them.

  • Anonymous

What utter crap. Please show me any proof other than your statement on that one.

  • Anonymous

Interesting. You are “tired” of reading about what you perceive to be a cop out by OUR people, yet you found your way to a black blog, read each comment and then posted several of your own. Pray tell, what qualifies you to comment on what our children and community go through in this country? Were you originally born black but some time in your teens turned white? Oh wait, let me guess…you have black friends? A black relative? You subscribe to Ebony? Why not stick to wondering why the White Youth Culture glorifies drug use (meth, huffing), crime (drug dealing, stealing, sexual crimes) and general misery (wtf is up with tying a noose around your neck or slitting your wrist to “ease” the pain). We got this over here.

  • Anonymous

Apparently you don’t “got this over here”, because once again the black community is failing itself. Instead of taking action and responsibility, it’s back to the blame game, pointing the finger anywhere but at one another. That is why no one takes stories like this seriously.

You can try to stereotype the “white culture” as much as you want, but the few problems you mentioned pale (no pun intended) in comparison to problems in the black community.

  • Anonymous

So essentially what you are saying, is that you think schools should be segregated again?

  • Anonymous

Stereotyping the white culture? No. Hardcore facts. I listed very real problems in your community that you should be addressing. There is not a day that passes that my local paper and news sites don’t feature stories about white kids shoving something up their arms, noses and any other opening they can find. If people thought crack babies were something to fear, wait until those white “gasoline” babies start moving around. Seriously, your kids are injecting gasoline in their bodies. The white community is failing itself. I see it everyday and you do, too. That’s why you are over here sniffing in behind us. Again, worry about what is going wrong in your community and we’ll worry about ours.

I have spoken with many teachers who all say the same thing. Black boys in the classroom want to be the center of attention all the time. Constantly disrupting the class with jokes, foolishness, or singing rap songs or beat boxing while the teacher is giving a lesson. Everyone in the class suffers.
When they are sent to the Principal, they return to class and act worse. If the teacher makes too many waves, they are viewed as racist and end up fired.

Where did you read that in my comment. Perhaps you should re-read it because nowhere did I suggest schools be segregated.

  • Anonymous

It’s not negative. It’s the truth. There are a number of our own teachers who treat our children in the same negative manner as white teachers. That is why merely increasing the number of black teachers is not the only resolution. I’ve encountered negative black teachers and counselors who interacted with our children in a manner that left them feeling as if they could not accomplish anything. By the same token, I’ve met black teachers who uplifted our kids. I’m quite sure you understand (OVERstand) the concept that the black teachers that are in place now were taught by the very people we are accusing of discriminating against us, right? There has to be a real change in thinking and educating our own. The issue is way bigger than increasing the number of black teachers in the classroom.

  • Anonymous

Why is it ok to call one a cracker, but when they call you n****r you get upset?

Some stereotypes never die because we take no action against those who perpetrate them. The myth of the little black boy who wouldn’t behave or obey simply because he is ‘bad’, caused mine to have his autism repeatedly misdiagnosed and denied, for a decade. That is, until I found a little black boy who had grown-up to be a doctor. How can we make a difference for all the other black boys out there still being assigned to boot camp when it’s too late, instead of appropriate intervention while it’s still early?

I see alot of back and forth and placing blame on others instead of dealing with the real issue, and that is the breakdown of the African American family. 70 percent out of wedlock birthrate, fathers absent from the home because black women opt to bear children without husbands fast discover that they are incapable of properly raising and disciplining boys. A woman cannot raise a boy to be a man, because a woman is not a man. Nothing will change for the better until the African American community gets it’s priorities straight. The destruction of the intact two parent household is the main reason for all the problems of the community. It is unfortunate that our children must now suffer the consequences for the mistakes of the adults. I guarantee that when black men and women start providing their children with two parent households, things will begin to turn around. The BEST help that the African American community can do for its boys is to provide FATHERS…in the home…married to the mothers. Nothing will get better until this changes.

Blming whites won’t solve the problem. Most do not have a vested interest in our children. Restore the African American family. Bring back marriage. Strong black men who can effectively parent their sons will turn things around. Think Good Times and yes everyone will say “that was a show”, but the character of James Evans Sr. is based on what used to be “reality” for the African American family. We need James Evans back in every household, regardless of socio-economic status.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why I cannot find this study. It certainly isn’t to suggest it doesn’t exist; it’s just easier to have a relevant and INFORMED conversation about the subject, and that becomes incredibly difficult when we cannot parse through the study, their findings, their methodologies, along with their discussion. If their are any moderators or others who know where we can find this study (I have access to JSTOR inter alia), please, please post a link. We need to have this discussion, but it can’t be off the cuff or done based on emotions and rhetoric. I look forward to a response!

I’ve continuously pointed to the various pathologies (negative) associated with Black Male life. This isn’t a new phenomenon, read” The Tangle of Pathology” from the 1964 Department of Labor Report highlighting the problems associated and directly correlated to having a culture of children raised in a MATRIARCHAL fashion; out of alignment with the dominant , privileged culture.
Another problem of the “Black” community is the failure of the people to point to the duplicity of the “birthers” of these children for MOST of the problems these Black Children face.
Whenever I hear,”We need better role models, where are the good men, a real man would, etc.”, I want to eat gravel. The fact that many of these children “act out” isn’t a surprise when you consider the acting going on at home. Most of the failures, a great majority, are rooted in the single-mother pathology, easily the greatest albatross of African-Descended people.

I can attest to that because I have witnessed it with my own eyes and my younger brother is currently going through that. He has had other kids call him the n-word and when he responds, the teachers punish him and give him in-school restriction. He’s in high school now and it’s been going on since middle school.

As far as incidents I have witnessed, I used to see a good friend of mine in high school go through it. I used to sit and wait for him to get yelled at the teacher for speaking, regardless of how loud the classroom was at the time.

Would someone wake me up because I’m dreaming, and praise the Lord! Someone besides me has the guts to stand up and say with the real problem is, THANK YOU DJSQWYD!!

Swampthing I empathize with you regarding your experience during your younger years. However, we are dealing with issues going on NOW. I tend to not believe that black women are systematically abusing and belittling black boys. I do believe that that black women are systematically setting boys up to fail, by buying into the pathology of single female households.

Iwillbfree you say our children are smarter than asians, lebanese, chinese, other cultures. How do you explain why our children are lagging so far behind? And why are so many of us unwilling to deal directly with the main cause of this and so many other problems in the black community? The disintegration of the intact, two parent black household? Why are we as a people so reluctant to stick our proverbial heads in the sand regarding this?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2OMIIXHUX2FSP7WMVMFNKHVHGM Jill

This is becoming silly and this is why no one takes us or our issues, seriously. We’re talking about OUR CHILDREN! Leave the racist comment out of this and let’s focus on the underlying problems and solutions.

Iwillbfree: What is scary is that you actually believe the dribble you posted. If black children are smarter than Asians, Latinos, Whites and Indians, why do blacks always score lower across the board on any test given to them? All Melanin does is prevent you from getting a sunburn, it doesn’t help you in any other form. Get a life man.

LMAO !! The reason they receive lower grades is because they are stupid, the reason they receive harsher punishment is because their misbehaviour is both CONSTANT and AGGRESSIVE. Also, the whole ‘less attention’ thing is bulls**t. I went to public schools in Memphis, often the only white person in my class, or even grade, I have no idea. They acted like animals. I worked with a man whose wife was a teacher at a s**t neighborhood s**t elementary school and she said she had to spend all her time teaching the children basic social skills like washing hands, sitting still, listening, and after 20-25 years went to a school that had white kids and almost wept she was so happy she could actually ‘teach’ courses and not have to raise 6 and 7 year olds whose parents never taught them to wipe their f**king asses.

why do black b***hes always talk about ‘queens’ and ‘goddesses’ when you know you just a field n****r.

Well Blackwomen do not get pregnant on their own..you are only putting blame on the women
when men are having sex with them..and the men can easily use a rubber. if what you are saying is true
beacuse of Blackwomen selfish behavior, than how come the Black girls from the same house holds are not having the same problem?

And I tell people like you “I know who may father is” and that usually burns you up.

I personally dealt with this with my son in the evergreen school dist. in Mountain HS and Legacy HS. here in Vancouver WA. They did not like me addressing this issue in the school board, they acted like I was being extreme and that this issue was not going on in the THEIR schools, they have non racial teachers (and I am Oprah).

It has to do with the fact that they don’t want to learn and would rather be out playing ball, partying, robbing people, chasing girls…..it has nothing to do with racism.

    bulls**t.

Ok, well when you figure out a way to force the men to marry the women they get pregnant, or at the very least, take equal care of their children if the parents just can’t be together, I guess the problem will be solved. Problem is, of course, no one can make that happen.

I agree that a two-parent household is best for children; my kids have that and I feel it’s definitely the most stable situation in many respects. But there’s several things that need to happen to fix this problem. What we need to do is stop placing blame solely on Black women, teach Black males to be responsible when it comes to sex (simply saying, “wear a condom” isn’t enough), validate Black females so that they don’t become statistics, stop accepting men walking out on their children (we do accept it as a community, one can’t deny it), and emphasize that when two folks are faced with an unplanned child, they need to put themselves aside and BOTH, EQUALLY care for that child…mom taking most of the burden while dad pays a little bit of money and visits once a month isn’t sufficient, so we need to stop giving Black men the message that it’s ok to do.

Lastly, I’m tired of the lie that Black women drive away the fathers, because the law doesn’t allow it. Black men who aren’t married to the mothers of their kids don’t typically pay child support according to state law, they don’t seek joint custody or visitation, hell many don’t even want to put their name on the birth certificates. If they wanted to be part of their children’s lives, they certainly could (and should) be. But Black women can’t just sit and wait for men to do the right thing while the child waits, they’ve just been doing the best they can, with or without the fathers.

He didn’t say that, but I’ll go ahead and say it. That movement wasn’t all about Black children going to school with Whites, it was about us getting equal resources…we shouldn’t have to get the decades old, outdated books and equipment while White students get top-of-the-line supplies. Our school buildings shouldn’t crumble, while White students get to sit in comfortable, updated classrooms.

It’s 2012, we still don’t get equal resources, so let’s just cut the bulls**t and go back to teaching our own. We’d do much better having our children with teachers and admnistrators who, as BlackHeywood said, won’t be fearful of them or feel that they are inferior because of their color.

I want to see the movement toward Africentric charters grow, it’s worked in most instances. But since such schools are primarily in major cities, homeschool co-ops with Africentric curricula could work in the meantime for people in smaller areas. Asians, Hispanics, and Native Americans have their own schools, there’s no reason for us to feel guilty about having the same.

When a white man, the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, tried to sound the alarm when his studies–he was a social scientist for many years–he was shouted down by his fellow liberals, accused of ‘blaming the victims’. Whenever anyone tried again to raise a clarion call to address this issue as things went from bad to worse to worst through the years, they were accused of being ‘racists’ for ‘stereotyping’ black children. When a black woman, Marva Collins, had the impudence to successfully teach the very children whom the public schools of Chicago had stopped even trying to pretend to educate–doing it with but a fraction of the money that was being squandered in the CPS, she was all but hung in effigy by her fellow liberals and schoolteachers, black and white alike.

The villains are not always who you think that they are. Nor are the heroes. If you’re both not willing to learn the difference AND screaming, then you’re not merely not part of the solution, you’re also part of the problem. If that’s you, then sit down and STFU.

I can agree with a lot of the comments made by Judith Dianis. I am a mother of two African American boys, one being a toddler, the other in the 1st grade. I have recently had experiences that has proven Dianis’s thoughts to be of truth. My 1st grader, came from a school that was predominately black. While there he was an excellent student. Always obeying the rules, getting good achievement grades, and just being a respectful kid. He was also this way at his predominately black pre-k school. However, when he changed schools, to one of more diversity, things changed, in the beginning of his school year. He was sent home with conduct marks for the least little thing he said or did. Mind you now he is a 1st grader fresh out of kindergarten. Anyhow, this went on for a few months, until me and my husband meet with his teacher to receive his 1st report card. Now I addressed my concerns, as a parent, and tried to analyze how he has made such a dramatic change in less than a year, in his conduct. When his teacher began to explain to me why he received some of the marks, they were for petty things, for example: talking before teacher recognized your hand, giving your opinion on what someone says to you, or just touching another student in play. It was just ridiculous! Instead of just redirecting students, she’d rather make them feel bad and give them conduct marks, for what? for being a child. After explaining to my son, the strict rules and guidelines of the school and letting his teacher know that I am a parent who pays attention to her children; and for any reason that she gives him a conduct mark, I need to know in full detail what it was for, before I disciplined him. I did not want to discipline my child for just expressing himself. When a parent knows and pays attention to their children, it should be limitations on how you will let others treat them. That is what destroys their character, and their self-esteem. I refuse to let anyone, through my knowledge, destroy my children from being their best. Many parents are not as concerned as I am. Some are just too young themselves, and some just don’t care. However, for those who are keeping track of what goes on with their children, make sure you are aware of the details if they get into trouble. We, as parents have a great task to do. We have to protect our children, teach our children, and most importantly LOVE our children. When we enforce things in them when they are at home, they can be better students. As the saying says… training of a child, begins at home. If we don’t give these teachers (black or white) a reason to stereo-type our black children, then we may see some better results in how they react towards them in the future. I don’t want anyone assuming anything negative about my children, and I will try to make sure that I, as a parent, will enforce education, respectfulness, and courtesy in them.
