I have supported Obama strongly during the election and during his first year of Presidency. Still I cannot stand by his decision to send more troops to Afghanistan. I realize that he said he would add troops during the campaign but I believed that was just posturing for those who said he was soft on defense. I don’t see his decision as a betrayal but as a continuance of a stupid belief of his that I overlooked due being caught up with the energy of the election.

We have been in Afghanistan for almost eight years and I have seen no improvements. We are not closer to finding Bin Laden, the Taliban is strong, the government is corrupt and warlords run the country.

To understand Afghanistan you need to understand its history. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979 and occupied the country for 10 years. Many credit their long occupation for the fall of communist Russia. The long occupation left more than one million Afghans dead, three million severely wounded and five million, a third of the Afghan population became refugees.

It was the CIA and the American government who funded and trained the insurgents against the Russian occupation, who were also known as the mujahideen. One prominent member of the mujahideen was a tall Saudi by the name of Osama Bin Laden. Bin Laden and his cronies would use the same tactics they were taught by the CIA and become the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Obama said he is going to send more troops to Afghanistan to “finish the job.” What exactly is the job? To get Bin Laden? Does it take 40,00 soldiers to catch one man? Inelligence reports say that there are only 100 Al Qaeda members in Afghanistan. If Bush wasn’t able to get Bin Laden during 8 years off occupation, how many troops and how much more time is required to get them?

If Obama has learned anything from the Soviet occupation of Afghnisatn or the American occupation of Vietnam is that occupations do not fix a country’ problems but only create civilian casualties, corrupt governments and animosity towards the occupiers.

Just as the USA gave power to Bin Laden and the Taliban, when they funded and supported the mujahideen, now they have created a a narco-state full of corrupt officials, drug dealing warlords, lawlessness, and a resurgent Taliban. The CIA is putting drug lords on their payroll now just like they had radical jihadists on their payroll like Bin Laden 30 years ago.

The problem in Afghanistan is a political problem that needs a political solution, not a military problem that needs a military solution. Most of Al Qaeda has relocated to Pakistan. Bin Laden has been extremely successful with propaganda reaching out to the Muslim world. He has done it without an Army. Maybe if Obama continued to win the hearts and minds by speaking out to the Muslim world he could counter Bin Laden more effectively than by sending troops to occupy an Arab country.

Using a massive army to stop Bin Laden and Al Qaeda is like using a machine gun to kill a rat. To beat them we must be smart and crafty and use intelligence (in both sense of the word). More troops means more civilian casualties, more disgruntled soldiers and more civilians feeling oppressed by an occupation.

If you believe that a surge in Afghanistan will be successful like the like it was supposedly in Iraq, remember that many believe that the slow down in violence in Iraq was caused by ethnic cleansing and not the surge. I’m not sure if you are letting the military bully you around. The same generals who have not made any progress in Afghanistan in eight years should not have a say in the matter.

The $30 billion dollars being used in Afghanistan is about half our entire budget for education. During a recession when unemployment is at an all time high, is it wise to use so much government money for a cause you can’t even explain?

This decision is wrong for the country and wrong from the world. The lessons of history tell us that this is wrong. When the people of America elected Obama, they elected to change the way America does business in the world and this decision seems to be right out of the Bush playbook.

“now they have created a a narco-state full of corrupt officials, drug dealing warlords, lawlessness, and a resurgent Taliban.”

So are you saying there was none of this in afganistan before the U.S. occupied it? Are you suggesting that Afghanistan was in a better position before?

“Inelligence reports say that there are only 100 Al Qaeda members in Afghanistan.”

Okay… you say this to drive home the point that we don’t need “40,00 [sic]” more troops there, but earlier you had mentioned that “the Taliban is strong, the government is corrupt and warlords run the country.”

So which is it? Is the country sustainable by itself now, or if we left would the Taliban (which is much weaker than you think right now) resurge and take back over? Guess what heppens if we let the latter occur? Remember 9/11? If we don’t “finish the job” we will suffer more devastating terrorist attacks. You can’t just watch the Taliban retake the country and cross your fingers hoping that they just leave us alone.

And the Soviets didn’t “occupy” Afghanistan, they attacked it with the intentions of taking it over and making it a province of their own country, which is why the U.S. intervened. It’s also why the U.S.S.R. failed.

Your speculations are unsubstantiated and misleading. Fortunately for you this audience eats up articles like this all the time.

Not like most bloggers answer us anyway..but
If the President Pulls out of afghanistan, the the taliban takes over, and al qaida (spell check)returns, and blow up the building you work in,or the one your family is in (9/11), what will your argument be then? Just asking.

Lol @ all this blowing up buildings talk…I see the media has done a masterful job of blinding many of you. Do people still believe that some guys training in the desert with Ak-47′s and crude rocket launchers, really obtained enough knowledge, resources and sophistication to pull off a 9/11 by themselves? Well its obvious some on this blog believe that. I think some of you people who think they are so informed by reading “intelligence” reports, should really go and check the correlation between wars and stock prices for defense companies. General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin, Haliburton, Xe etc. will soon see huge upticks in their stock prices. Haliburton’s stock went up 500% after the Iraq invasion. If anyone in this day and age, still doesn’t realize that war is primarily about generating huge profits for multi national companies, then all I can say is God help you!

All the corruption was there before the war. It is true that the previous administration kind of took their eyes off Afghanistan. Obama has not won the hearts and minds of the muslim world, they do not like the U.S. Iran won’t comply with the nuclear regulations and you do not want that country to get a weapon as power as a nuk. Political solutions won’t work at the moment because the people there are scared, those extremist are brutal. The same Generals aren’t conducting this war because Generals retire and new ones take control and are able to implement their ideas. Say what you want to about Generals but they are far more intelligent than you with multiple advance degrees. The cause can be explained, we were attacked without cause and now we WILL NOT stop until we put a stop to this. These extremist aka terrorist will not stop. The world doesn’t care about us and they never had. They use for protection and want our money for aid but they do nothing. These terrorist are well trained and some come from military background from various countries. The Afghanistan situation is more complex then what this blogger has wrote.

I agree with the President’s plan for Afghanistan. He wants to end the war in Iraq, which Bush-Cheney should have never started, and redirect the focus to getting Osama bin Laden, and also continue training of Afghan soldiers to defend and protect their own territory. We all should know that it will take money and time in order to start bringing American troops home. People act as if this is not necessary. This would eventually have to happen in order to formulate an exit strategy. As far as the timeline set for July 2011, the Conservatives demanded a date to retreat, and he gave them a date that he would start to consider bringing troops home if the situation on the ground is more stable than it is today.

The media has truly done him a disservice, including Roland Martin’s new TV-One’s Washington Watch, because it does not provide all of the information people should know about what’s going on.

Roland slants all of his topic questions in favor of his party, the Republicans, which are only obstructing the President’s agenda, lying to the public and creating doubt. Sometimes Roland is “black folk,” sometimes Roland denies blackness and refers to himself as Puerto Rican (as I saw on CNN). Blahhhh with the Republican perspective while having a Democrat in the Office of the President. He should have been holding his Republican President accountable for the last eight years.

CORRECTION: The Democrats demanded a date; he gave them one during his speech. The Democrats and Republicans demanded then pressured President Obama to let the nation know all of the details: the timeline, strategy, how many troops, etc. Now the media and other politicians are stepping away from him as if he didn’t coordinate and determine his decision based on his staff, military intelligence, Congress, media, and the American people.

It makes no sense to go back a place where it has been proven that Bin-Laden has not been found. It is rumored that he has been dead for many years and even if he is found there is no way to stop the Al-Qeada. They are too widespread, too connected, and too well funded! The best thing to do is WITHDRAW the troops, remain vigilant (because we are already under a relaxed form of matial law, and it did not start with this president), and HEED the warnings (our “intelligence” had knowledge about Pearl Harbor, The Gulf of Tonkin, AND 9-11 well before these incidents occured) But I guess the best way to raise an economy is to rile everyones patriotism and get them to buying Amerikkan themed apparel and purchase AMERIKKAN MADE PRODUCTS! YEAH! GUNS! WOO HOO! And “A” you raise a few good points!

People can be sooooo ignorant sometimes, I swear! I mean, sure, peace is a great thing, and we would all love to have some peace. However, when you got people acting up, doing all kinds of crazy stuff internationally, you gotta do SOMETHING! I don’t understand it; it’s not like Obama just made up his mind one day that we were gonna enhance our efforts in Afghanistan, ignoring EVERYBODY advising him not to. Obama took time out to listen to EVERYBODY who has any clue about what is happening, and made his decision after WEEKS of deliberation! It’s not like when Bush started the Iraq war, wit’ the UN in his face tellin’ him “You know, you really shouldn’t do that” with all the other countries lookin’ @ us like “you’re on your own”. Not to mention that we’re NOT occupying Afghanistan and we’re NOT the only country over there fighting.

It’s simple logic. You have a terrorist organization over there plotting all kinds of schemes to cause terror internationally. They’ve done it before and they’ll do it again, not to mention the fact that they’re willing to use nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons to achieve their goals (or simply kill us all). To say it doesn’t make sense to stop them is literally illogical. I’m sure if there were a better method that wouldn’t require war, Obama wouldn’t have decided on sending more troops now would he?
