CBS analyst Doug Gottlieb (pictured right) sparked a touch of controversy Thursday during an appearance on a CBS NCAA pre-game show, according to USA Today.

“I don’t know why you guys ask me, I’m just here to bring diversity to this set, give kind of the white man’s perspective,” Gottlieb said to four colleagues covering Marquette University’s game against the University Of Miami. The comment didn’t sit well with his fellow analysts, all of whom are African-American.

Analyst Greg Anthony immediately made a face after hearing Gottlieb; Kenny Smith said he has “jumped right into it” with his words. People on Twitter have also weighed in.

“After Doug Gottlieb’s ignorant comment on CBS he should be canned,” Tweeted ESPN analyst and former NFL star Mark May.

SportsGrid writer CJ Fogler dismissed Gottlieb’s claims that he speaks for White men. “As a mostly white guy, I’d like to point out that Doug Gottlieb does NOT offer my perspective,” he posted on his Twitter account.

Watch Gottlieb make the comment here:

“Wonder what the over/under is for Charles Barkley to smack Doug Gottlieb tonight,” Tweeted Brandon Branham.

Luckily, Gottlieb doesn’t have to worry about what the latter Tweet said. During a break in the game, Barkley came to Gottlieb’s defense.

“I know this has nothing to do with the game; I want to say something about Doug Gottlieb,” Barkley said. “He made a joke earlier tonight and people are going crazy. All those idiots on Twitter, which I would never ever do, all you people at home who’ve got no life and are talking bad about Doug Gottlieb, get a life. It’s over with. It’s no big deal.”

Gottlieb is not expected to face any disciplinary actions for his comments.
