Lauryn Hill, who dropped the classic “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” seventeen years ago, released a new single this weekend.

The singer released “Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)” on her Tumblr page Saturday. Anyone looking for for the “old Lauryn Hill” will be terribly disappointed, as the singer speeds through what she feels are the ills of society during the four-minute track. In a short message on her Tumblr page, she seemly says that she did not want to even release the track:

Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline. I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music… but the message is still there. In light of Wednesday’s tragic loss (of former label mate Chris Kelly), I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today’s unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!

Hill has until later today to pay a $554,000 tax bill; she has reportedly paid just $50,000 towards it. Last summer, she pleaded guilty to evading taxes on $1.8 million in income between 2005 and 2007.
